Web tech savvy gurus unspook me - Infowars and PP blocked?
« on: February 12, 2009, 11:48:56 pm »
Haven't gotten all day.  Still can't.  I'm in the North Midwest area.  I browse using portable apps.  However even when I try to access through the conventional way and a different browser system I can't get on.

So I go to hidemyass.com - and I can get on!  They are the only two sites I've been unable to access all day today.  Is ATT blocking me or is there another possibility?

check loopback 127.x0.x0.x1 or switch up browsers every other time.

Ok, I'm slow but I learn - what do you mean by check loopback 127.x0.x0.x1?  Is this something I would check on my router settings?

You could also try using OpenDNS. http://www.opendns.com/homenetwork/solutions

make sure your firewall dont detect 0.0.0.0 or allow 127=locals only your 192... or remote x.x.x.x adress.

no real numbers cuz i dont wanna expose your or my adresses.

Well well.  Had a reply all done up after trying a bunch of stuff.  Restarted the router and modem one more time and now I'm on - weird.  I guess I'll refrain from being conspiratorial but I don't understand why it would only be those two sites.

But you guys threw out some interesting stuff I want to look into - quick question.

OpenDNS - are there downsides?  will email settings and wife's laptop (which shares the connection via wireless router) settings need changing?  I don't wan't to get in over my neck - my wife uses the connection for our son's virtual school every day (if they don't log in he is truant - no lie :) ) and I need it for work.

At any right thanks for the lightning responses.  All the same I'm glad it was remedied before getting into the thick of it.

I've been using OpenDNS for a little while. I'm on a wireless router and I only have it set on my computer. It doesn't affect the rest of the network if you set it locally, it also doesn't affect e-mail just DNS queries from your comp. I learned about it on The Pirate Bay, Italy and Turkey I believe had ordered their ISP's to ban The Bay so this was an easy work around they found to circumvent the block.
