Looks like the press is either sensationalizing or desensationizing this stuff.

Please post various international reports on this so we can try and find out what is what.

Apparently they have been targeting financial areas with small arms/grenades.

This seems unlikely to be a full false flag (unless they wish to say each instance should be treated as a full terror plot).

It also is unlikely the tamil tigers (the most advanced form of suicide bombers and terrorists on the planet-BTW-they are not muslim, they are Hindu). But the tigers always hit their target (far as I know) and they are high risk/high level targets.  They usually do not get involved with small arms chaos like this seams to be.

Who knows maybe it is paid provocateurs to test out the new microwave weapons.
All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately

Terror attacks in Mumbai; 16 dead, several injured

MUMBAI: Terror struck the country's financial capital late on Wednesday night as coordinate serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked
eight areas across Mumbai including the crowded CST railway station, two five star hotels--Oberoi and Taj-- leaving 16 persons dead and 50 injured. ( Watch )

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of CST and opened fire and threw grenades, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A K Sharma said.

The terror strike which began at 10:33 PM at Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus(CST), formerly known as the Victoria Terminus(VT), claimed 10 lives in the premises of the station alone, police said.

Three persons were killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number were gunned down at Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The lobby of the Oberoi hotel was on fire and the hotel evacuated, eyewitnesses said.

Maharashtra DGP A N Roy said tonight's attack in "at least seven places" is a "terror strike."

Sharma said 30 persons were injured in the CST incident. Commandoes were rushed to the CST which wore a deserted look and train services suspended.

Some people were injured in the firing in Oberoi hotel, and taken to a nearby hospital in police vans and ambulance. Firing was also reported in Taj hotel.

Firing was reported at Colaba, Nariman Point and near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal, formerly Victoria Terminus and it was still continuing.

Firing was also reported at Cama Hospital in south Mumbai, police said, adding that a blast was reported in a taxi under a flyover in suburban Vile Parle. A bomb went off in a taxi in Mazegaon dockyard road.

SRPF personnel then entered the iconic BMC building -- just opposite CST -- to take aim at the assailants, BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak said. "We fear some of the assailants are still inside the station and we want to catch them if they come out," a police official said.

Vikhroli police station senior inspector Habib Ansari was on his way to work from his Colaba home when he saw two armed men, with sophisticated weaponry, trying to run into bylanes near the Gateway of India.

"I rushed back to Colaba and all policemen, including GRP and RPF personnel, were called up," he added.

Bhisham Mansukhani, a journalist, was attending a wedding reception at the Taj's Crystal Room. "I was inside the bar when glass shards almost hit my eye," he said. "More than 200 people were escorted inside Chambers, a business centre inside the hotel," he added.

Mumbai rocked by deadly shootings
TV grab
There are reports of attacks at seven locations

Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 10 people and injuring others, local reports say.

Police said the shootings appeared to be terrorist attacks.

Gunmen opened fire at seven sites including a train station and a restaurant popular with tourists.

Shootings were also reported near two hotels and at a hospital. At least two blasts, suspected to be grenade attacks, were reported.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," said AN Roy, police commissioner of Maharashtra state.

Sajjad Karim, an MEP for the North West of England who is in Mumbai, told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the lobby of Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

He said he had seen people fall before fleeing to a restaurant, where the doors had been barricaded.

"All I saw was one man on foot carrying a machine gun type of weapon - which I then saw him firing from and I saw people hitting the floor, people right next to me," he said.

Series of 'terror attacks' hit Mumbai

Reuters and AP
Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Police say a series of attacks by terrorist gunmen have hit at least seven sites in Mumbai, including two luxury hotels. Indian television is reporting that 25 people have been killed.

A.N. Roy, a senior police officer, saidpolice were battling the gunmen.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed. The encounters are still going on and we are trying to overpower them," Roy said.

The gunmen attacked two luxury hotels, the Taj and the Oberoi, as well as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark.

Television stations showed fires in the lobby of both hotels and people being evacuated from the Oberoi with their hands on their heads.

India has suffered a wave of bomb attacks in recent years. Most have been blamed on Islamist militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists thought to be behind some of the attacks.

A British Euro-MP was among guests under siege in their Mumbai hotel in the wake of the attacks.

Sajjad Karim, speaking by mobile phone from a barricaded basement room at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, said he and others had fled from machine-gun fire and had no idea why the hotel was targeted.

He said: "I was in the lobby of the hotel when gunmen came in and people started running. There were about 25 or 30 of us.

"Some of us split one way and some another. A gunman just stood there spraying bullets around, right next to me. I managed to turn away and I ran into the hotel kitchen and then we were shunted into a restaurant in the basement.

"We are now in the dark in this room and we've barricaded all the doors. It's really bad."

Mr Karim is part of a delegation of Euro-MPs visiting Mumbai ahead of the forthcoming EU-India summit.

He said that as he ran from the lobby, he saw people falling but did not know the extent of any casualties. He said it seemed to be a "random attack".

Mr Karim, a North West MEP, defected from the Liberal Democrats to the Conservatives in the European Parliament a year ago.

The Taj Mahal Palace, one of the most famous hotels in India, was home to the England cricket team when they visited Mumbai around two weeks ago.

They were also planning to use the hotel on their return to the city for the team's second Test Match against India, which is scheduled to start on 19 December.

The team were in the eastern Indian city of Cuttack today after losing their latest one-day game against India.

Five police killed in Maoist attack in India

New Delhi -At least five policemen were on Tuesday killed in a landmine blast triggered by suspected Maoist rebels in India's central state of Chhattisgarh, a news report said. The explosion that took place in the southern Bastar district of the state blew up a bridge killing five policemen and injuring two other security personnel, the PTI news agency reported quoting senior police official AN Upadhya.

The rebels carried out the blast when the policemen were returning after their election duty at polling booths in the region.

Chhattisgarh is one of the six Indian states holding elections.

Senior police officials and additional police forces have been sent to the region, considered a hotbed of Maoist militancy.

Maoist militants, who claim to be fighting for the rural poor, operate in 13 of India's 29 states. They usually target police and government installations.

According to independent estimates, over 500 people - including civilians, police and rebels - have been killed in Maoist violence in India since the beginning of the year.

1,120 deaths from 69 Islamic terrorist attacks since 2000. When does India say enough is enough?
Quote
Aroon Purie
July 31, 2008

When does a nation say enough is enough? If you are India, it seems like never in spite of 1,120 deaths from 69 Islamic terrorist attacks since 2000. Last week saw 54 deaths in blasts on consecutive days in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. A day later, 28 bombs were defused in Surat.

In the last 10 years, there have been bomb attacks in Mumbai, Coimbatore, Srinagar, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, more than once in some cities.

In 2007, the United States’ National Institute of Counter Terrorism calculated that between January 2004 and March 2007, the death toll in India from all terrorist attacks was 3,674, second only to Iraq during the same period.

On the terrorist death charts, we are second to a country which has a civil war on its hands and has an occupying army. This is incredible.

What has been most frustrating in these last few days is the sameness of the events. Bombs go off, lives are lost, a home minister mouths a few platitudes, and a few days later, everyone gets on with their lives exactly as they did before. Terrorists seemed to attack at will and the real culprits are never caught. No place is safe in India.

Look at what America did after 9/11. Despite being one of the world’s most liberal democracies where you can burn the national flag or wear it as underwear, they introduced the Patriot Act which allows detention, tapping of phone conversations and monitoring emails and bank accounts in the interests of the State.

The Department of Homeland Security was set up to co-ordinate the work of all intelligence agencies. Although they are the prime target for terrorists, the US has had no terrorist attack since 9/11.

In India, like in other spheres, we go through the ritual of dealing with terrorists but actually do nothing substantive. We have repealed acts like POTA which were meant to tackle terrorism through pre-emptive arrests.

Our security agencies do not work in a co-ordinated manner to make full use of the intelligence. Law enforcement is not funded enough for adequate policing and developing intelligence networks. There is no sense of purpose conveyed to citizens at large to get their co-operation in preventing such attacks.

Our cover package this week is a comprehensive look at the Indian state’s response to terror, or more aptly the lack of it. We have on-the-spot reports as well as an analysis of the radicalisation of the Indian Muslim and how and why the moderates are losing the battle. Seasoned journalist M.J. Akbar and Islamic terror expert Charles Allen have also written special guest columns in the package.

As we near the 61st anniversary of Independence, India appears still enslaved by timidity when it comes down to tackling terror. It is time to say enough is enough and declare zero tolerance for terrorism. Otherwise, the “Incredible India” story is turning into “Impotent India”.

25 Wounded During Mumbai Terror Attack

Gunmen targeted luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks in India's financial capital Thursday, wounding 25 people, police and witnesses said.

It was not clear how many of those were dead or injured, but Indian television stations are reproting at least 20 dead, while Reuters puts the number at 10.

A.N Roy police commissioner of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said several people had been wounded in the attacks and police were battling the gunmen.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," said Roy.

Gunmen opened fire on two of the city's best known Luxury hotels, the Taj Mahal and the Oberoi. They also attacked the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark.

It was not immediately clear what the motive was for the attacks.

"It was really scary. It was like the sound of loud crackers, not one but several, we just ran out of there," said Janice Sequeira, a tourist who had been at a restaurant in the Taj Mahal Hotel.

At the Oberoi, police officer P.I. Patil said shots had been fired inside and the hotel had been cordoned off. He would not give any other details.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A.K. Sharma as saying that several men armed with rifles and grenades were holed up in the train station.

Leopold's restaurant was riddled with bullet holes and there were blood stains on the floor and shoes left by fleeing customers, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.

At least 25 people had been brought to the G.T. Hospital near the shootings, said hospital official Yogesh Pandey.

UPA govt projecting India as a terrorist country: BJP
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Jaipur/UPA_govt_projecting_India_as_a_terrorist_country_BJP/articleshow/3753430.cms
25 Nov 2008, 0432 hrs IST, TNN

JAIPUR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday accused Congress-led UPA government at the Centre of projecting India as a ‘terrorist country’.

Party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi alleged that Congress was deliberately drawing religion into terrorism.

Addressing a press conference on Monday at the state BJP headquarters, Naqvi said, “It’s an old habit of Congress. It began with Sikh terrorists, then it was Muslim terrorists and now, it’s Hindu terrorists. The Congress is deliberately drawing religion into such a sensitive issue.’’ Taking a dig at Congress president Sonia Gandhi, albeit without naming her, he added, “All Indians are terrorists and their belief in foreign leader is patriotism.’’

He further alleged that this was all part of Congress’ divide and rule policy, which it has been following for years. “It was following its false propaganda on Sikh terrorism that Congress lost its power then and now, it will lose it again because of its recent actions,’’ he said, adding that a narco analysis test on ‘Congress’ mind’ should be conducted to understand its ideology. He also alleged that Congress’s weak stand on Pak supported terrorism has led to LeT and ISI becoming more active in the country.

Naqvi, who attended a meeting of the election management committee on Monday, claimed that according to their assessment, BJP will easily win in four of the six states which are going into elections, including Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh while it would record an increase in number of seats in Jammu and Kashmir and Mizoram.

Meanwhile, the BJP has started finalizing the tour plan for its senior leaders. Party president Rajnath Singh will be addressing public meetings at Nokha, Laxmangarh and Ajmer on Wednesday. Chief minister Raje will address public meetings at Banswara and Dungarpur on Tuesday while Hema Malini would be visiting Jhalore, Pali and Jodhpur the same day.

Mumbai: Terror struck the country's financial capital late on Wednesday night as coordinated serial explosions and indiscriminate firing were reported from at least eight locations across Mumbai.

At least 18 people are reported killed and 24 are seriously injured.

The coordinated terror strike which reportedly began at 2233 PM at Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus(CST), formerly known as the Victoria Terminus(VT), killed 10 people in the premises of the station, police say.

A petrol pump has been blown up in Colaba by armed men and at least 10 people are reported to have been killed in that strike. Three persons are killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number have been gunned down at the five-star Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The five-star Hotel Oberoi is also under siege and gunmen are reported to have held the occupants hostage. Reports say 10 gunmen are holed up inside Hotel Oberoi and the Rapid Action Force is considering storming the hotels.

The shooting at the hotels was reported between 2215 hrs IST and 2230 hrs IST when bullets, apparently from automatic weapons, were fired at police and paramilitary forces outside the Taj Hotel. The lobby of Hotel Oberoi is reportedly on fire. The RAF is considering storming the hotels.

Live updates: FIRING AT CST

The next, near simultaneous shooting took place near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus police station in which six people were injured.

Police have cordoned off the CST Railway Terminus, a crowded place at this time of the evening, and have stopped entry. Press Trust of India reports two persons armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades are holed up inside the CST station.

PTI also reports three people, employees of Taj Hotel in South Mumbai, were killed after being fired upon by terrorists and an equal number of people died in a bomb blast in a taxi at Dockyard Road. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, headquarters of the Central Railway, is a world heritage building and remains crowded almost throughout the day.

Local train services to and from CST have been suspended. A police official said he saw two people, armed with automatic weapons at CST. "They opened indiscriminate fire and fled inside. They are reported to be holed up between platform seven and eight," he said.

Two more blasts have been reported from Majhgaon and BPT Colony.

Looks like the Indian government is blaming the Hindu religion as being 'terrorists' now.

India shocked by discovery of first Hindu terror cell
At least 10 people, including monk and army officer, held over bombings initially blamed on Islamists

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/india-shocked-by-discovery-of-first-hindu-terror-cell-1031237.html
By Andrew Buncombe in Delhi
Sunday, 23 November 2008

India is in something of a state of shock after learning from official sources that its first Hindu terror cell may have carried out a series of deadly bombings that were initially blamed on militant Muslims. The revelation is forcing the country to consider some difficult questions.

At least 10 people have been arrested in connection with several bomb blasts in the Muslim-dominated town of Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra in September, which left six people dead. But reports suggest that police believe the cell may also have carried out a number of previous attacks, including last year's notorious bombing of a cross-border train en route to Pakistan, which killed 68 people. Among the alleged members of the cell are a serving army officer and a Hindu monk.

Bomb attacks are not uncommon in India – there has been a flurry in recent months – but police usually blame them on Muslim extremists, often said to have links to militant groups based in either Pakistan or Bangladesh. As a result, the recent cracking of the alleged Hindu cell has forced India to face some difficult issues. A country that prides itself on purported religious and cultural toleration – an ambition that in reality often falls short – has been made to ask itself how this cell could operate for so long. India's military, which prides itself on its professionalism, has been forced to order an embarrassing inquiry.

The near-daily drip of revelations from police has also caused red faces for India's main political opposition, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ahead of state polls and a general election scheduled for early next year. The BJP and its prime ministerial candidate, Lal Krishna Advani, have long accused the Congress Party-led government of being soft on terrorism that involved Muslims. However, the BJP has refused to call for a clampdown on Hindu groups, and last week Mr Advani even criticised the police over the way they questioned one of the alleged cell members, a woman called Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur.

The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, phoned his rival to ask him not to politicise the issue or the investigation. "There is a strong case so let the police do their job," he told Mr Advani. While some commentators have expressed surprise about the discovery of the alleged cell, others have pointed out that there has been growing concern about the possible threat from Hindu extremists. In the summer, two members of a right-wing Hindu group were killed while putting together a bomb, and two other suspected members of the same group died in similar circumstances in 2006.

Meanwhile, senior right-wing leaders have made no secret of their wish that Hindus should form suicide squads to protect themselves against Muslim extremists. Bal Thackeray, leader of a group called the Shiv Sena, which has been responsible for communal and regional violence in Mumbai, wrote recently in the party's magazine: "The threat of Islamic terror in India is rising. It is time to counter the same with Hindu terror. Hindu suicide squads should be readied to ensure the existence of Hindu society and to protect the nation."

Observers say the fact that the police have arrested the alleged cell members amid considerable political pressure suggests the growing professionalism of its security forces. "It's the first Hindu cell and it's the first time Hindus have been shackled and taken to jail," said Professor Dipankar Gupta, a sociologist at Delhi's Jawarlahal Nehru University. "I'm quite pleased with the way the police have done their jobs."

Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 16 people and injuring others, local reports say.

Police said the shootings appeared to be terrorist attacks.

Gunmen opened fire in at least seven sites, including a train station, two five-star hotels, a hospital and a restaurant popular with tourists.

There has been a wave of bombings in Indian cities in recent months which has left scores of people dead.

Most of the attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists.

At least two blasts, suspected to be grenade attacks, were reported alongside Wednesday's shootings.

Police said the gunmen had fired indiscriminately.

At least 80 people were dead and 250 injured in the terror attacks, hospital sources said.

The NSG commandos were on standby and national disaster response force unit is being rushed to Mumbai, the Ministry of Home Affairs officials said.

I just heard on Indian TV that the terrorists went into the hotel and asked which rooms American tourists are in. Then went up to the rooms and are now holding them hostage.    Strange.

CNN is reporting only 2 killed and only 26 injured.

LOOKS LIKE THIS IS BEING MINIMIZED BY US PRESS!

Keep feeding the international reports.

I'm hearing 55 dead and 190 injured as of now.  More are being reported.

I saw a 2 minute brief on CNN on the attack, then they cut to Obama.

8:05pm UK, Wednesday November 26, 2008
A Briton in Mumbai has told of how he managed to escape from gunmen as the Indian city was hit by a series of suspected terror attacks.

Security forces on alert for more attacks

Alex Chamberlain was in a restaurant at a hotel when he heard gunfire.

Gunmen stormed the building and he and a group of people were ushered into the kitchen.

Chamberlain told Sky News that one of the waiters was shot in the arm.

The group of about 30-40 people was then "marched up like sheep" by a "young guy with a sub-machine gun, who was about 22-23".

The gunman then told people to stop and asked them to put their hands up. The attacker asked if any of the people were British or Americans.

Chamberlain said: "My Indian friend told me 'don't be a hero' and tell him you're Italian and that kind of stuff'."

Chamberlain said he got to about the 18th floor of the hotel and there was a gunman below them, and there were gunshots above and smoke everywhere.

Map of Mumbai targets

The Briton and another person managed to sneak out of a fire door "without the gunman seeing us", where they stayed for about 15 minutes.

Chamberlain said: "I phoned my girlfriend and told her I loved her and thought it would be the last time I would talk to anyone."

He then walked "slowly downstairs expecting to see somebody with a gun around the corner" but they had gone.

He then smashed a window. He said "the smoke was so thick I thought we were going to suffocate".

Chamberlain said he walked into the lobby and when he came out into the street there were about 20 police officers there "looking just as scared as any of us" and a few fire engines.

Chamberlain called it "the ugly face of Islamic fundamentalism" because of the "language and venom in which the people were asked if they were American or British".

The Briton, who works for the Indian Premier League cricket, said: "They were talking about Britons and Americans specifically".

He added: "They shot people completely unnecessary".

British member of European parliament in Mumbai siege

A British member of the European parliament was among guests under siege in the Mumbai hotel attacked by gunmen Wednesday, the Press Association (PA) reported.

Sajjad Karim, a Conservative, spoke by mobile phone from a barricaded basement room to PA's correspondent in Brussels.

"I was in the lobby of the hotel when gunmen came in and people started running. There were about 25 or 30 of us. A gunman just stood there spraying bullets around, right next to me," he reportedly said.

"I managed to turn away and I ran into the hotel kitchen and then we were shunted into a restaurant in the basement. We are now in the dark in this room and we've barricaded all the doors. It's really bad," he added.

Karim is part of a delegation of Euro-MPs visiting Mumbai ahead of the forthcoming EU-India summit, dpa reported.

Terror struck the country’s financial capital late tonight as “coordinated” serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked eight areas across Mumbai, including the crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) railway station, two five-star hotels — Trident (formerly Oberoi) and Taj — leaving 16 people dead and over 50 injured.

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of CST, opened fire and threw grenades, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner AK Sharma said.

The terror strike which began at 10.33 pm at CST, formerly known as the Victoria Terminus, claimed 10 lives in the premises of the station alone, police said. Three people were killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on the Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number were gunned down at Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The lobby of Trident hotel was on fire and the hotel evacuated, eyewitnesses said.

Maharashtra DGP AN Roy said tonight’s attacks happened in “at least seven places” and were a “terror strike”.

Sharma said 30 people were injured in the CST incident. Commandos were rushed to the CST, which wore a deserted look and train services suspended.

Some people were injured in the firing at Trident hotel, and taken to a nearby hospital in police vans and ambulance. Firing was also reported in Taj hotel.

Firing was reported at Colaba, Nariman Point and near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal and it was on till the filing of this report.

Firing was also reported at Cama Hospital in south Mumbai, police said, adding that a blast was reported in a taxi under a flyover in suburban Vile Parle. A bomb went off in a taxi in Mazegaon dockyard road.

According to Roy: “The suspected terrorists struck in a number of places. Terrorists have opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.” In some places they lobbed even grenades. “In two hotels, some of them are still holed up....In Trident hotel, at least two terrorists are still holed up.”

Roy said that terrorists had opened fire at places and disappeared. “Some people are injured and the casualty figure is yet to be ascertained...Our people have reached the spot and are responding to the situation," he added.

In the national capital, the Union home ministry said it was keeping a close watch on the situation and would provide all necessary assistance to the state government.

Seven foreigners among 15 taken hostage at Mumbai's Taj

MUMBAI: Two terrorists carrying guns tonight took 15 people, half of them foreigners, hostage on the roof of the luxury Taj Hotel, one of the
hostages who managed to escape said.

Two youths in their 20s came to the restaurant of the hotel and took 15 people to the roof of the hotel, Rakesh Patel, a businessman from London who lives in Hong Kong, told a TV channel giving the first eyewitness account of what happened in the five-star hotel in South Mumbai.

"The two young boys came to the restaurant and took us upstairs. We were taken to the 18th floor from where we escaped", he said.

Replying to a question, Patel said the terrorists wanted to know if any one of the hostages was carrying American and British passports.

They clearly wanted foreigners, he added.

Reports of the death toll vary, but one news agency says 80 people have died while Indian television stations report the toll to be at least 40.

They have reported hostages have been taken at hotels used by Westerners.

Australian tourists were among those who had to flee after a series of bomb attacks and shootings in the city, the Herald-Sun reported.

Gunmen have targeted two luxury hotels, a railway station and restaurant in the attacks and a third hotel has been bombed.

Australian tourist Isaac Zalhe said the city was in chaos.

"There were people driving around in a cop car shooting people," he said.

A British Euro-MP is among guests who have had to flee fire in their Mumbai hotel during an attack by gunmen.

North West MEP Sajjad Karim, speaking from a basement room at Taj Mahal Palace, said he and others had fled and had no idea why the hotel was targeted.

Alex Chamberlain, who is in the city on business, said gunmen also burst into the Oberoi hotel and believes they were looking for British and US visitors.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday night condemned the terror attacks in Mumbai and assured all help to Maharashtra in meeting the situation.

The Prime Minister's Office said Singh was in touch with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and was monitoring the situation.

Deshmukh also said that he was in touch with the central government which had assured all help to meet the "very serious" situation.

He said he had talked to Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who assured that the Centre would provide all the assistance required by Maharashtra.

The Centre has immediately decided to dispatch National Security Guard commandos to supplement the efforts being made by local police and CRPF, Deshmukh said.

"We are trying to control the situation," he said.

Okay, call me crazy. I just wonder if this is true or not, as far as "terrorists."

See, according to another article I read recently, 1,000 or so farmers commit suicide each MONTH there, thanks to Monsanto's GM crops ruining their livelihoods.

If these are angry farmers, finally deciding to strike back at the American company that has destroyed countless lives there... I can't really blame them.

Maybe they ARE hindus. But maybe they are starving and angry people, fighting for the lives and freedoms of their people- their children- their parents- their wives or husbands... can we be sure? With so many starving and poor people there, perhaps it's time for a civil war.
Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little.

MUMBAI: A series of as many as 9 attacks are reported to have claimed 55 lives, with a further 200 injured, according to TV reports.

TV channels are carrying live coverage of what is reported to be at least 5 ongoing gunbattles between the terrorists and security forces. The attacks seem to be concentrated in South Mumbai.

The reports say that the police were exchanging fire with the terrorists holed up in the Taj and Oberoi luxury hotels. There are other ongoing encounters at the Chhatrapati Sivagi Terminus (Victoria Terminus), Cama Hospital and Metro Cinema.

Reports also say that at least 20 people including foreigners are held hostage on the roofs of the Taj and Oberoi hotels.

The police say that the terrorists have stolen cars, which are suspected to be laden with explosives and the perpetrators are driving around the city, taking random potshots at citizens.

Police is said to have intercepted one car and in an exchange of fire, two of the terrorists were blown up along with the car.

Five policemen are said to have been killed and many police personnel have been injured.

Additional Commissioner of Police Kamte is said to have been killed. Hemant Karkare, head of the Anti Terrorist Squad, has also been killed.

The terrorists are said to have their hideout in Nariman Towers and security personnel are in the process of taking action.

It is also said that the terrorists have entered the premises of the JJ School of Arts.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has cut short a visit to Kerala and is on his way back.

The state government has asked for help from the armed forces and the Army is to take out a flag march in the city.

The centre is said to be sending a force of 200 NSG commandos.

Unconfirmed reports claim the terrorists to be 'Fidayeen'.

Earlier, IANS reports:

The top floor of the world-famous Hotel Taj Intercontinental in Mumbai caught fire after a bomb explosion as terroists struck at seven locations in the metropolis late Wednesday night.

The 22-storey, five-star hotel by the Arabian Sea was one of the targets of the terrorist attack. An explosion on the top floor soon engulfed the top floor of the hotel in fire.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot, officials said.

Earlier in the night, terrorists opened fire at police and paramilitary forces outside the Taj Hotel between 10.15 p.m. and 10.30 p.m., police officials said.

The officials, who refused to speak on record, said the terrorists fired indiscrimantely near the five-star hotel where around 2,000 guests and staff were stranded.

The body of a foreign woman guest was recovered from the Taj Hotel and two terrorists were holed up inside the building, a police official said.

At least 90 percent portion of the building was plunged into darkness as authorities cut off power in a precautionary measure.

Suspected terrorists hijacked a police jeep near Metro Cinema here and fired at two policemen who were in the vehicle, an eyewitness said.

Metro Cinema was one of the targets of seven "coordinated terrorist attacks" in Mumbai Wednesday night, in which at least 17 people were killed and over 50 were reported injured.

The police said gunbattle between the terrorists and the police were on in at least three places, including the Taj and Trident hotels.

Two terrorists attacked the police vehicle near the Metro Cinema and dragged two policemen from it after firing at them, the eyewitness told IANS.

The policemen were seriously injured and rushed to a hospital, according to the witness.

Metro Cinema in south Mumbai is barely one-and-half km from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (previously known as Victoria Terminus), which also came under the terrorist attack.

A Briton who escaped the terrorist attack at the five-star Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai Wednesday night said the attackers specifically asked for American and British tourists.

Alex Chamberlain, who is working in Mumbai, said the terrorists allowed him to leave along with other diners at the besieged Kandahar restaurant in the Oberoi, now known as the Hotel Trident, after he kept his nationality a secret.

He told Sky TV that the terrorists shot a waitress in the arm before allowing diners to take the stairs down to the lobby.

Chamberlain said the smoke - from either a hand-grenade or a smoke bomb - was so thick that those making their way down from “the 18th floor or wherever we were” feared they would choke to death.

He said once he was on the ground floor he had to break a glass window in order to let some air in before making his way out.

“We're preparing for a very long night,” he added.
