I could not agree more, I did not know he had spoken at the CFR - kinda says it all, a damned bleak future awaits pakistan if Syed Shahzad is correct in the above article - and he usually is correct on such matters.

At least 20 people were killed and several others injured on Saturday when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a police station in Pakistan's restive northwestern Swat valley.

The attacker drove the vehicle into the police station at Charbagh, located about 10 km from Mingora, the main town of Swat district, on Saturday morning.

Paramilitary troops were also deployed at the police station in Charbagh, which has witnessed violent attacks by the militants in the recent past.

State-run PTV reported that 20 people were killed in the attack. Curfew was imposed in the region and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in private vehicles.

Muslim Khan, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman in Swat, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The security forces are currently conducting operations against the local Taliban [Images] in the Swat valley of the North West Frontier Province.

Saturday's bombing was the third suicide attack in Pakistan since Tuesday, when 78 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a hospital at Dera Ismail Khan city in the same province.

A total of 78 people were killed when three suicide bombers blew themselves up outside a ordnance factory complex in Wah cantonment, about 50 km from Islamabad [Images], on Thursday.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks in Dera Ismail Khan and Wah

yep at least several hundred have died in the last two weeks. plus upto 300,000 displaced

and with president-not-quite-elect Zarkari and PM Gilani running the country for the benefit of the Cold Warriors and neocons in DC things will only get worse.

i read today that Zarkari (spelling?) has done 11 years in prison and been investigated for murder, embezzlement, money laundering and so on, he makes former President Bhutto (benazir's former murdered husband) look positively clean by comparison.

Pakistan condemns US incursions

DUBAI // Pakistan’s foreign minister condemned US attacks that have killed large numbers of Pakistanis along the border with Afghanistan, saying that his country can control its Taliban problem without foreign intervention.

“Innocent people have lost their lives. Women and children have lost their lives in these attacks and we have openly spoken out about this to the US,” Shah Mahmood Qureshi told Pakistani community leaders and businessmen in Dubai on Friday evening.

“Nato have distanced themselves from these attacks.

“If there is action required, the Pakistan army will do it.”

Yesterday, Islamabad reported the Pakistan army had killed 60 fighters in the Swat valley during the previous day.

In the past few months increasing attacks by missile-firing US drones have killed many civilians as well as suspected Taliban militants in the border regions.

Mr Qureshi told an audience of expatriate Pakistani community leaders and businessmen at a hotel in Dubai Marina that Pakistan stood firmly against “Talibanisation”.

He said Pakistan continued to have a good relationship with the US, despite the recent incursions by its forces along the border area in North Waziristan.

The US provides Pakistan with US$80 million (Dh294m) a month in aid.

“Pakistan is in the front of the fight against extremism and terrorism that the world faces,” he said.

The US Edges Closer to Invading Pakistan

This writer has been warning for years that US and NATO efforts to defeat resistance to Western occupation by Afghanistan’s fierce Pashtun tribes would eventually lead to spreading the conflict into neighboring Pakistan, a nation of 175 million.

We’ve seen it all before in Vietnam. It was then called, “mission creep.”

The focus of the Afghan War is clearly shifting south into Pakistan, drawing that nation and the United States forces ever closer to a direct confrontation. This grim development was as predictable as it was inevitable.

This week’s fevered warnings from Washington of supposedly imminent terrorist attacks in Europe may be aimed at justifying intensifying US military operations against Pakistan. If attacks do come in Europe, they will most likely be linked to anti-French militant groups in North Africa and the Sahara – nothing at all to do with Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Last week, Pakistan temporarily closed the main US/NATO supply route from Karachi to the Afghan border at Torkham after the killing of three Pakistani soldiers by US helicopter gunships. Three US/NATO fuel supply convoys were burned by anti-American militants.

Afghan war moves deeper into Pakistan

By Syed Saleem Shahzad

ISLAMABAD - Information supplied by a Pakistani-German jihadi led to the United States Predator drone attack in Pakistan on Monday in which at least eight other Germans were killed, Asia Times Online has learned.

A senior Pakistani security official said the two missile strikes near the town of Mir Ali in the North Waziristan tribal area followed intelligence passed on by Rami Mackenzie, 27, during interrogation following his arrest in the middle of this year by Pakistani security officials in Bannu, the principal city of Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province.

At the time of his capture, Pakistani authorities said they believed Mackenzie, who had been disguised in a traditional woman's burqa, was an expert in manufacturing suicide vests.

Drone attacks have been significantly stepped up in the past few months - there were a record 22 in September - since the arrest in July in Kabul of Afghan-German Ahmad Siddiqi. He revealed that al-Qaeda was planning attacks in London, Paris, Berlin and other European cities similar to those carried out in Mumbai, India, in November 2008 in which 166 people were killed and scores wounded.

The threat of attacks has set off a Europe-wide travel alert issued by the United States.

"On Ahmad Siddiqi's tip-off, CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] drones targeted North Waziristan on September 8 in which a few Germans were killed," the security official said. Siddiqi attended the same mosque in Hamburg in Germany as the September 11 lead hijacker, Mohamed Atta.

"The interrogators also gleaned information on the role of Sheikh Fateh al-Misri as the mastermind and the commander of the new al-Qaeda mission in Europe." Egyptian Misri, al-Qaeda's chief commander in Pakistan and Afghanistan, was killed in a drone attack on September 25. Misri, previously not a member of al-Qaeda, in May replaced Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who was also killed in a drone attack in the North Waziristan tribal area.

The official said highly concerned American and European intelligence services were desperately trying to track down suspected al-Qaeda connections in North Waziristan in an effort to eliminate al-Qaeda's European franchise.

The Pakistani ambassador in Washington, Hussain Haqqani, has confirmed a link between the increased drone strikes and efforts to disrupt possible attacks in Europe, which unconfirmed reports said were to take place in November.

"The activity we see in North Waziristan, in terms of strikes and terms of measures to try to get people from al-Qaeda and associated groups, is connected to the terrorist warnings that we have heard about potential strikes in Europe," Haqqani told the BBC

MISSION CREEP IN AFPAK
October 03, 2010

The focus of the Afghan War is clearly shifting south into Pakistan, drawing that nation and the United States forces ever closer to a direct confrontation. This grim development was as predictable as it was inevitable.

In fact, this writer has been warning for years that US and NATO efforts to defeat resistance by Afghanistan’s fierce Pashtun tribes to Western occupation would eventually lead to spreading the conflict into neighboring Pakistan, a nation of 175 million.

Last week, Pakistan temporarily closed the main US/NATO supply route from Karachi to the Afghan border at Torkham after the killing of three Pakistani soldiers by US helicopter gunships. Two US/NATO fuel supply convoys were burned by anti-American militants.

Eighty percent of the supplies of the US-led forces in Afghanistan come up this long, difficult route. Along the way, the US pays large bribes to Pakistani officials, local warlords, and to Taliban. The cost of a gallon of gas delivered to US units in Afghanistan has risen to $800.

US helicopter gunships have staged at least four attacks on Pakistan this past week alone, in addition to the mounting number of strikes by CIA drones that are inflicting heavy casualties on civilians and tribal militants alike. US special forces and CIA-run Afghan mercenaries are also increasingly active along Pakistan’s northwest frontier.

Gunmen launch new attack on NATO trucks
6 October 2010
, by Jane Cowan and wires (Reuters - ABC News)
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/10/06/3031306.htm?section=justin

Excerpt:

7 hours 15 minutes ago - Taliban gunmen in south-west Pakistan have torched another convoy of NATO oil tankers.

It is the latest strike against supply convoys headed for Afghanistan since Pakistan shut a key border crossing to international forces last week.

Police say gunmen set fire to at least eight NATO tankers and shot dead one man on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the latest round of attacks, which have destroyed nearly 60 trucks and killed three people in recent days.

They say the attacks are to avenge US drone attacks and to halt the NATO supply route through Pakistan.

----

The bulk of supplies for the foreign forces in Afghanistan moves through Pakistan, which is itself battling a deadly homegrown Taliban insurgency.

US pressure on Pakistan to crack down harder on militants in its north-west tribal areas, who cross the border to attack US-led NATO troops in Afghanistan, is one source of friction.

Pakistan has repeatedly said it is doing all it can to fight the militancy, pointing to the thousands of people it has lost in a wave of attacks over the past three years.

It has, however, said it will not tolerate any incursions by foreign troops into its territory.

Nato contractors 'attacking own vehicles' in Pakistan
http://blacklistednews.com/Nato-contractors-%27attacking-own-vehicles%27-in-Pakistan/10940/0/20/20/Y/M.html
Published on 10-07-2010

Nato supply convoys travelling through Pakistan to Afghanistan have regularly come under attack in the past, but following Pakistan's decision to block their route through the Khyber Pass, they now face an even bigger security threat.

Hundreds of tankers and trucks have been left stranded on highways and depots across Pakistan, with little or no security.

Taliban militants have regularly been targeting the convoys, even when they are heavily protected.

But many believe it is not just the militants who pose a security threat to the convoys.

The owners of oil tankers being used to supply fuel to Nato in Afghanistan say some of the attacks on their convoys are suspicious.

They say there is evidence to suggest that bombs have been planted in many of vehicles by the "Nato contractors" - individuals or companies who have been contracted by Nato to supply fuel and goods to forces in Afghanistan.

The contractors subsequently hire the transporters who then carry the goods.
