Google's Racketeering Challenge

According to a recent civil lawsuit, a plaintiff is suing Google for violating the racketeering laws (aka ?RICO?).  (Attia et al v. Google et al, Cal. Sup. Ct. (Santa Clara) Case No. 1:14-cv-270143.)  I?ve been waiting for this since 2012 when it dawned on me one day that Google is running a criminal enterprise (see ?Google?s Guide to RICO?).  So what does this RICO business mean?

If you?re even occasionally exposed to contemporary crime movies you?ll have heard of ?RICO?.   The ?RICO? statute is the acronym for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act which allows a criminal prosecution against the leaders of an ?ongoing criminal enterprise?, particularly where the leaders of that organization order others to commit crimes, often called ?RICO predicates?.  The loophole was that leader didn?t do the crime, but ordered or assisted others in committing it.  (Recall the Senate hearings in The Godfather II, and see the first major RICO criminal case, US v. Scotto, 641 F.2d 47 (1980) for those reading along.)  You know, that thing that happened with those guys down at that place we used to go back in the day.

Often overlooked is the civil cause of action that may be brought either by the government or by private citizens under both the federal RICO statute and the 33 or so state law versions of RICO.  This allows private citizens who have been harmed by corrupt organizations to sue for treble damages and attorneys fees.  The Department of Justice civil RICO manual is also instructive for government action under the statutes:

....

I?m not a RICO expert, but the RICO portion of the complaint seems to be very well-pleaded and a systematic application of the law and facts.  It?s also important to remember that Eric Schmidt, Larry Page and Sergey Brin have absolute control over Google (and Alphabet, the holding company) through Google?s bizarre voting rules as explained by the Motley Fool:

...

Not only does the voting structure mean that insiders can block any shareholder revolt, it also means that insiders are totally responsible for any of the company?s bad acts.  That may explain why Eric Schmidt essentially ?took the 5th? under questioning by Senator John Cornyn about Google executives? narrow escape from criminal prosecution for violating and conspiring to violate the Controlled Substances Act. Schmidt later claimed neither he nor his legal team ?understood? the Senator?s questions and were ?confused.?

This is, of course, another reason why Google was sued by its stockholders after insiders authorized the payment of $500,000,000 of the stockholders? money as a fine for the bad behavior of insiders such as Larry Page.  In fact, the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island told the Wall Street Journal that Larry Page was directly implicated in profiting from illegal drug advertising?which may have something to do with why the RICO claim refers to the $500,000,000 fine.

...

Where does it go?  Before you laugh it off, remember this:  If you had told a room full of MBAs in the mid 1980s that in a few years time Master of the Universe Michael Milken would be in prison and Drexel Burnham Lambert would be bankrupt, you would have been laughed out of the room as a quixotic buffoon.  But on March 29, 1989, Michael Milken was charged with 98 counts of racketeering and fraud and was facing life in prison.  That?s right?racketeering under the RICO Act.  Milken copped a plea to six lesser included crimes of securities and tax fraud, paid a $600 million fine and served 22 months in a federal pen on a 10 year sentence.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

An anonymous reader cites a TorrentFreak report (edited and condensed):
YouTube is guilty of criminal racketeering.

That's the headline-grabbing claim of Grammy award winning musician Maria Schneider, who claims that the Google-owned site is abusing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to siphon money away from musicians into its own pockets.

Over the years, Google has transformed into the new bad guy and the pressure is mounting in a way never witnessed before. The U.S. Copyright Office's request for comments into the efficacy of the DMCA's safe harbor provisions has resulted in a wave of condemnation for both Google search and the company's YouTube platform, with everyone from the major record labels to the MPAA and back again attacking the technology giant. Grammy award-winning musician Maria Schneider really ups the ante by stating that YouTube is guilty of the same criminal acts that Megaupload is currently accused of. "YouTube is guilty of criminal racketeering," Schneider wrote in an open letter to the platform. "YouTube has thoroughly twisted, contorted, and abused the original meaning of the outdated DMCA 'safe harbor' to create a massive income redistribution scheme, where income is continually transferred from the pockets of musicians and creators of all types, and siphoned directly into their own pockets."

The Creepy Line Trailer
Published on Aug 24, 2018

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle ? hence powerful ? manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title taken from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google?s code of conduct: ?The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.?

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, ?Google crosses the creepy line every day.? Containing interviews with Jordan B. Peterson, Peter Schweizer, and others, The Creepy Line offers an explosive look at the meddling and intervening done by Google and Facebook on their supposedly ?neutral platforms.?

The Creepy Line takes the conversation about data privacy and control further than ever before by examining what Google and Facebook do once they control a user?s data. Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public?s most private and personal data.

Facebook Censors Articles from Conservative Outlets About Manafort, Cohen
By Tyler O'Neil August 23, 2018

Multiple posts sharing articles by prominent conservatives have been temporarily censored on Facebook under the excuse that they "look like spam." Both articles dealt with the Paul Manafort conviction and the Michael Cohen guilty plea, arguing that these events were not nearly as damning to President Donald Trump as the media supposed.

First, Facebook blocked Salena Zito, CNN contributor and author of the groundbreaking book "The Great Revolt: Inside the Populist Coalition Reshaping American Politics." On Wednesday afternoon, Zito published a New York Post article explaining "why Trump?s supporters won?t care about Cohen and Manafort?s convictions."

Google Deletes 39 YouTube Channels

On Thursday morning, she noticed something out of place. "So this is interesting? [Facebook] took down my post of my reporting for the [New York Post] ? I?ve received nine separate messages from readers telling me the same thing has happened to them. ?sup [Facebook]?" Zito asked in a tweet.

96 Percent of Google Search Results for 'Trump' News Are from Liberal Media Outlets
By Paula Bolyard August 25, 2018

Is Google manipulating its algorithm to prioritize left-leaning news outlets in their coverage of President Trump? It sure looks that way based on recent search results for news on the president.

Conservatives and Trump supporters have for the last several years questioned whether Google was deprioritizing conservative news sites, hiding them from users who utilize their search engine. Google has maintained that all outlets are treated fairly, but nevertheless, conservative sites have reported reduced search traffic and, in the case of Google-owned YouTube, content creators have been banned and demonetized. Google's high-profile firing of conservative James Damore, purportedly over his conservative political views, only reinforces the idea that Google is picking winners and losers.

Trump Takes Aim at Google, Claims Search Results ?RIGGED? Against Him: ?Illegal??
by Aidan McLaughlin | Aug 28th, 2018,

President Donald Trump unleashed some unusually early morning tweets on Tuesday, citing a report from a conservative website to rip Google for allegedly biased search results.

Trump first claimed that ?Google search results for ?Trump News? shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media.?

?In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD,? he continued. ?Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out.?

Trump then asked if the search results were ?Illegal?, before elaborating: ?96% of? results on ?Trump News? are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous.?

?Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good,? he added. ?They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!?

Report: Google Collects Data on Users in Private ?Incognito Mode?

New reports out last week claim that the Google Chrome web browser collects data on users even when they are in the private ?incognito mode.?

A researcher from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, uncovered last week that Google had access to data for users opting to use the private browsing mode on the Google Chrome web browser. ?If you don?t want Google Chrome to remember your activity, you can browse the web privately in Incognito mode,? a Google Chrome help page reads. But apparently, that doesn?t mean that Google can?t obtain the data from private browsing sessions.

Facebook, Google, Twitter Fight Net Neutrality: ISPs Shouldn?t Censor, But We Can
27 Aug 2018

Facebook, Google, and Twitter filed a legal brief on Monday, contending that Internet service providers (ISPs) such as Comcast or Verizon should not be able to censor content, while they reserve the right to censor content themselves.

The Internet Association (IA), a trade association representing Facebook, Google, and Twitter, filed a legal brief with 22 state attorneys general to challenge the Federal Communications Commission?s (FCC) repeal of the agency?s 2015 net neutrality rule.

While the IA argues that ISPs have a monopolistic control over the broadband market, a Wall Street Journal article pointed out that Google drives 89 percent of Internet search, Google and Facebook absorbed 63 percent of online ad spending last year, and Google and Apple provide 99 percent of mobile phone operating systems, while Apple and Microsoft supply 95 percent of desktop operating systems.

AltaVista was a Web search engine established in 1995. It became one of the most-used early search engines, but lost ground to Google and was purchased by Yahoo! in 2003, which retained the brand, but based all AltaVista searches on its own search engine. On July 8, 2013, the service was shut down by Yahoo! and since then, the domain has redirected to Yahoo!'s own search site

...
In 2001, the searchable index was powered by Inktomi and later was powered by Google until 2004, when Yahoo! Search became independent. On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would henceforth power Yahoo! Search.[4]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_(search_engine)
Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft's previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing provides a variety of search services, including web, video, image and map search products. It is developed using ASP.NET.

In July 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search.[6]

All Yahoo! Search global customers and partners made the transition by early 2012.[7] The deal was altered in 2015, meaning Yahoo! was only required to use Bing for a "majority" of searches
...
As of November 2015, Bing is the second largest desktop search engine in the US, with a query volume of 20.9%, behind Google on 63.9%. Yahoo! Search, which Bing largely powers, has 12.5%

Google: Bing Is Cheating, Copying Our Search Results
Danny Sullivan on February 1, 2011

Google has run a sting operation that it says proves Bing has been watching what people search for on Google, the sites they select from Google?s results, then uses that information to improve Bing?s own search listings. Bing doesn?t deny this.

Facebook Engineer's Stunning Admission: "We Tear Down Posters Welcoming Trump Supporters"
by Tyler Durden
Wed, 08/29/2018 - 07:53

On Tuesday morning, President Trump lashed out at Google, with his remarks later broadening to include Twitter and Facebook, accusing it of "rigging" search results by presenting only results "from National Left-Wing Media" and accused "Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good."

According to a memo posted on Facebook's internal message board titled "We Have a Problem With Political Diversity", and which was published by the New York Times, senior Facebook engineer Brian Amerige confirmed Trump's allegation writing that "we are a political monoculture that?s intolerant of different views" and shockingly admitted that "we claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack ? often in mobs ? anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology. We throw labels that end in *obe and *ist at each other, attacking each other?s character rather than their ideas."

The scathing indictment of Facebook's liberal "mono-culture" continues:

We do this so consistently that employees are afraid to say anything when they disagree with what?s around them  politically. HR has told me that this is not a rare concern, and I?ve personally gotten over a hundred messages to that effect. Your colleagues are afraid because they know that they ? not their ideas ? will be attacked. They know that all the talk of ?openness to different perspectives? does not apply to causes of ?social justice,? immigration, ?diversity?, and ?equality.? On this issues, you can either keep quiet or sacrifice your reputation and career.

"These are not fears without cause" Amerige writes, and continues the stunning disclosure of the company's biased culture, "Because we tear down posters welcoming Trump supporters. We regularly propose removing Thiel from our board because he supported Trump. We?re quick to suggest firing people who turn out to be misunderstood, and even quicker to conclude our colleagues are bigots. We have made ?All Lives Matter? a fireable offense. We put Palmer Luckey through a witch hunt because he paid for anti-Hillary ads. We write each other ad-hoc feedback in the PSC tool for having ?offensive? ideas. We ask HR to investigate those who dare to criticize Islam?s human rights record for creating a ?non inclusive environment.? And they called me a transphobe when I called out our corporate art for being politically radical.

Those companies "better be careful because you can?t do that to people," Trump said later in the Oval Office. "I think that Google, and Twitter and Facebook, they are really treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful. It is not fair to large portions of the population.?

Google immediately responded, condemning Trump's charge, and claiming that "Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don?t bias our results toward any political ideology."

And yet, as so often happens, in Trump's crude delivery, the politically incorrect truth was once again found.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

We no longer accept the sales pitch for this type of algorithm so meekly.

In her 2016 book Weapons of Math Destruction, Cathy O'Neil, a former math prodigy who left Wall Street to teach and write and run the excellent mathbabe blog, demonstrated beyond question that, far from eradicating human biases, algorithms could magnify and entrench them.
After all, software is written by overwhelmingly affluent white and Asian men - and it will inevitably reflect their assumptions (Google 'racist soap dispenser' to see how this plays out in even mundane real-world situations). Bias doesn't require malice to become harm, and unlike a human being, we can't easily ask an algorithmic gatekeeper to explain its decision.

O'Neil called for 'algorithmic audits' of any systems directly affecting the public, a sensible idea that the tech industry will fight tooth and nail, because algorithms are what the companies sell; the last thing they will volunteer is transparency.

Orrin Hatch Urges FTC Chairman to Investigate Google?s Anti-Competitive Practices
30 Aug 2018

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) wrote to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Joseph Simmons on Thursday, urging the agency to investigate Google?s anti-competitive practices.

Hatch wrote in his letter to the FTC:

In the past, Google has offered arguments that its conduct is procompetitive. And Google does have a long track record of providing valuable services and making important, innovative contributions. But much has changed since the FTC last looked at Google?s conduct regarding search and digital advertising.

Hatch also noted that Google has ?decided to remove from its platforms legal businesses that the company apparently does not agree with.?

Sen. Hatch said that many of his Senate colleagues wrote to Alphabet, Google?s parent company, regarding its data collection surrounding Google?s Android mobile operating system and privacy practices for Gmail users? data, which Google has given a third-party access to the actual content of emails.

The senior Utah senator said that although many of these reports concern various parts of Google?s business, many of the most  concerning  relate to the Google?s ?dominant position in search and accumulating vast amounts of personal data.?
...

,..     March 2015, the Wall Street Journal revealed some details of an FTC Bureau of Competition staff report from August 2012 (before the then-Commissioners of the FTC concluded the investigation into Google). That staff report recommended that the FTC pursue an antitrust action against Google because of some of its search practices. The report found that it was a ?close question? as to whether Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act by ?preferencing? its own ?vertical content over that of rivals, while simultaneously demoting rival vertical websites.? Ultimately, the staff recommended against pursuing a complaint on that point. The report did, however, recommend action against Google on other issues that the report found to be anticompetitive. Google resolved the issue by promising in a December 27, 2012 letter that it would take certain actions for five years to address those concerns. That time period has now passed.

Sen. Hatch has led Republicans towards investigating monopolies in tech since the last ?90s. In 1998, Hatch chaired a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing investigating whether Microsoft established a monopoly in the computer software industry.

According to Fox News host, the top earners at those companies were raking in billions while those they hire have to receive government assistance to get by.

Transcript as follows:

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is worth about $150 billion. That?s enough to make him the richest man in the world, by far, and possibly the richest person in human history. It?s certainly enough to pay his employees well. But he doesn?t. A huge number of Amazon workers are so poorly paid, they qualify for federal welfare benefits. According to data from the nonprofit group New Food Economy, nearly one in three Amazon employees in Arizona, for example, was on food stamps last year. Jeff Bezos isn?t paying his workers enough to eat, so you made up the difference with your tax dollars. Next time you see Bezos, make sure he says thank you.

Same with the Waltons. The Walton family founded Walmart. Collectively they?re worth about $175 billion. That?s more than the entire gross domestic product of Qatar, the oil-rich Gulf state. The Waltons could certainly afford to be generous with their workers. Instead, they count on you to take up the slack. In 2013, taxpayers sent more than $6 billion to Walmart?s workers, for food stamps, Medicaid, and housing assistance.

And if you think that?s shocking, meet Travis Kalanick. He?s the youthful founder of Uber. His personal fortune is close to $5 billion. His drivers, by contrast, often make less than minimum wage. One recent study showed that many Uber drivers lose money working for the company. That?s not a sustainable business model. The only reason it continues is because of your generosity. Because you?re paying the welfare benefits for Uber?s impoverished drivers, child billionaires like Travis get to keep buying bigger houses and more airplanes. He?s someone else who definitely owes you a thank you note.

If you can think of a less fair system than that, send us an email. We?d love to hear it. It?s indefensible. Yet almost nobody ever complains about it. How come? Conservatives, like us, support the free market, and for good reason. Free markets work. But there?s nothing free about this market. A lot of these companies operate as monopolies. They hate markets. They use government regulation to crush competition. There?s nothing conservative about that, just as there?s nothing conservative about most big corporations. Just the opposite. They?re the backbone of the left. Pick a leftwing cause that you think is hurting the country. Check the donor list, and you?ll find the name of some corporation. Often many corporations. Corporate America enables the progressive lunacy you see every night on this show. They?re funding the revolution now in progress.

That?s why liberals say nothing as oligarchs amass billions by soaking the middle class. Because they?ve been paid off. For example, you probably assumed the people who founded Walmart were conservative. Most of their customers certainly are. Yet the bulk of the Walton family backed Hillary Clinton in the last election. They gave the Democratic Party more than $700,000 during the 2016 cycle. Almost every billionaire in Silicon Valley did the same. In return, they got immunity from criticism, and you got to keep paying their employees. Not a bad deal for them.
,,,
There is one person in Washington who?s offended by this arrangement, and we?re sorry to say he?s wrong on pretty much everything else. But this is a weird moment, so you take allies where you can find them. Bernie Sanders, of all people, is trying to get your money back from Jeff Bezos. This is especially amazing since Bezos is on Bernie?s side on most things. They?re both leftwing activists. But on this question, Bernie?s right. He?s planning legislation that would force big corporations to return the taxpayer-funded welfare benefits you?ve paid to their workers. It?s not a perfect solution, and it probably won?t pass. No matter what they claim in public, liberals in Congress would never support something like that. Their loyalty isn?t to you. It?s to Uber and Jeff Bezos. But at the very least it might awaken a sleepy population to the new reality of activist corporate America. And that?s a good thing.

America has changed enormously in the last 20 years. A lot of people you thought were your allies are in fact working against your interests. They have contempt for you and your family, your customs and your faith. Included in this group, I?m sorry to say, are a lot of big corporations. They have no use for you or the country you grew up in. Stand in their way, and they?ll crush you. It?s all shocking enough that I recently wrote a book about it. It?s called ?Ship of Fools,? and it explains what happened and who did it. The book is out in a month, the first week of October, but you can preorder a copy now, and I hope you will.

Silicon Valley tech culture has roots in Burning Man, Stanford scholar says

Communication Professor Fred Turner has been studying the role of art and countercultural movements ? including the communal, participatory lifestyle celebrated at the annual Burning Man festival ? that have had far-reaching influence in the workplace of tech firms.

By Melissa De Witte

Every August, fire-breathing dancers, costumed performers and free-thinking artists gather in the Nevada desert to celebrate Burning Man, a countercultural event devoted to communal living, radical art and self-expression.

Amid the artists and free thinkers are thousands of information technologists, computer programmers and Silicon Valley executives who incorporate parts of the experience into their work cultures, according to Stanford communication Professor Fred Turner.
....
Why did you want to study Burning Man?

On my first visit to Google in Mountain View, I saw lots of pictures of Burning Man in the company's lobby. I've found over the years that what companies put in their lobbies tends to say a lot about what kind of company they hope to be. And so I started exploring the connections. I'm still doing that work today, most recently with an essay on Facebook's huge and largely unknown art collection.

Google and Mastercard Cut a Secret Ad Deal to Track Retail Sales
 Mark Bergen
 Jenny Surane
August 30 2018

(Bloomberg) -- For the past year, select Google advertisers have had access to a potent new tool to track whether the ads they ran online led to a sale at a physical store in the U.S. That insight came thanks in part to a stockpile of Mastercard transactions that Google paid for.

But most of the two billion Mastercard holders aren?t aware of this behind-the-scenes tracking. That?s because the companies never told the public about the arrangement.

Alphabet Inc.?s Google and Mastercard Inc. brokered a business partnership during about four years of negotiations, according to four people with knowledge of the deal, three of whom worked on it directly. The alliance gave Google an unprecedented asset for measuring retail spending, part of the search giant?s strategy to fortify its primary business against onslaughts from Amazon.com Inc. and others.

But the deal, which has not been previously reported, could raise broader privacy concerns about how much consumer data technology companies like Google quietly absorb.
...
Google paid Mastercard millions of dollars for the data, according to two people who worked on the deal, and the companies discussed sharing a portion of the ad revenue, according to one of the people. The people asked not to be identified discussing private matters. A spokeswoman for Google said there is no revenue sharing agreement with its partners.
...
Last year, when Google announced the service, called "Store Sales Measurement," the company just said it had access to "approximately 70 percent" of U.S. credit and debit cards through partners, without naming them.
...
That 70 percent could mean that the company has deals with other credit card companies, totaling 70 percent of the people who use credit and debit cards. Or it could mean that the company has deals with companies that include all card users, and 70 percent of those are logged into Google accounts like Gmail when they click on a Google search ad.
...
Google?s ad business, which hit $95.4 billion in 2017 sales, has maintained an astounding growth rate of about 20 percent a year. But investors have worried how long that can last. Many major advertisers are starting to funnel more spending to rival Amazon, the company that hosts far more, and more granular, data on online shopping.
...

Trump To Investigate Google, Facebook Under New Executive Order: Bloomberg
by Tyler Durden
Sat, 09/22/2018 - 09:36

According to a an early draft of an Executive Order (EO), the White House will instruct federal law enforcement and antitrust agencies to launch investigations into the business practices of Facebook, Google and other social media companies, according to Bloomberg which says it has seen the draft.

While not specifically calling out companies by name, the document orders US antitrust officials to "thoroughly investigate whether any online platform has acted in violation of the antitrust laws," while instructing other agencies to return recommendations within a month of Trump signing the EO which could potentially "protect competition among online platforms and address online platform bias."

Amazon, AT&T, Google push Congress to pass online privacy bill to preempt stronger California law
Jessica Guynn, USA TODAY Published 5:17 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO -- Major companies including Amazon, AT&T, Apple and Google are lobbying Congress to craft legislation that would preempt a first-of-its-kind California privacy law that grants sweeping online protections to consumers.

Senior executives from these companies, plus Twitter and Charter Communications, offered a show of industry support for a federal privacy bill with weaker consumer protections during a Senate hearing Wednesday.

Such a bill would block states like California from enacting stronger privacy protections. The executives argued that a patchwork of different state laws would make it tough for companies to operate and would threaten innovation. The takeaway from news outlet Axios: "Tech companies want privacy rules, but on their own terms."

The testimony on Capitol Hill came one day after the Department of Commerce recommended new regulations on how companies handle consumers' personal information that were similar to the ones being proposed by the tech and telecom industries.
...
At issue is California's new data privacy law, which will hand consumers the right to control what companies know about them and what they do with that information. It's the most restrictive law on the books in the U.S. but does not go as far as new online privacy rules Europe enacted in May.

Google Admits Existence Of Censored Chinese Search Engine Project; Dodges Questions At Senate Hearing
by Tyler Durden
Fri, 09/28/2018 - 10:18

Via PlanetFreeWill.com, http://planetfreewill.com/google-censored-chinese-search-senate-hearing/

Within a Senate privacy hearing on Wednesday ? which was seemingly swept out of the media spotlight by the lead up to today?s Judiciary Committee?s hearing involving a Brett Kavanaugh accuser ? Google?s chief privacy officer Keith Enright admitted the existence of Project Dragonfly, reportedly a censored search engine for China.
...
Project ?Dragon Fly? was previously reported as the code name for a censored search app in secret development by Google that would be specifically for China and would blacklist any material deemed unfit by the communist regime.

The project first came to light through a report in The Intercept on September 21 that detailed how Google ?forced employees to delete a confidential memo circulating inside the company that revealed explosive details about a plan to launch a censored search engine in China.?

Ex-Google scientist raises Project Dragonfly concerns in Senate letter
Brian [email protected] / 2 days ago

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, former Google research scientist Jack Poulson details why he stepped down from the company in late August. The note, sent earlier this week, details growing concern over Project Dragonfly, the search giant?s attempt to enter the Chinese market in a meaningful way.

The letter arrived as the Senate prepared to question Google?s new chief privacy officer, Keith Enright, about data concerns. It seems likely that the subject of Dragonfly will be on the schedule for committee members. Nearly 1,400 employees signed a letter last month stating that the project, 'raises urgent moral and ethical issues.'

It is notable that Project Dragonfly was well underway at the time the company released its AI Principles,? Poulson writes in his own letter. ?As has been widely understood, by human rights organizations, investigative reporters, Google employees, and the public, Project Dragonfly directly contradicts the AI Principles? commitment to not ?design or deploy? any technology whose purpose ?contravenes widely accepted principles of [?] human rights.?

Google Concealed Data Breach Over Fear Of Repercussions; Shuts Down Google+ Service
by Tyler Durden
Mon, 10/08/2018 - 13:16

Google opted in the Spring not to disclose that the data of hundreds of thousands of Google+ users had been exposed because the company says they found no evidence of misuse, reports the Wall Street Journal. The Silicon Valley giant feared both regulatory scrutiny and regulatory damage, according to documents reviewed by the Journal and people briefed on the incident.

...
Chief Executive Sundar Pichai was briefed on the plan not to notify users after an internal committee had reached that decision, the people said.

The planned closure of Google+ is part of a broader review of privacy practices by Google that has determined the company needs tighter controls on several major products, the people said. In an announcement Monday, the company is expected to say it is curtailing the access it gives outside developers to user data on Android smartphones and Gmail, the people said.

THE GOOD CENSOR?: Leaked Google Briefing Admits Abandonment of Free Speech for ?Safety And Civility?
?THE GOOD CENSOR?: Leaked Google Briefing Admits Abandonment of Free Speech for ?Safety And Civility?

9 Oct 201890
An internal company briefing produced by Google and leaked exclusively to Breitbart News argues that due to a variety of factors, including the election of President Trump, the ?American tradition? of free speech on the internet is no longer viable.
Despite leaked video footage showing top executives declaring their intention to ensure that the rise of Trump and the populist movement is just a ?blip? in history, Google has repeatedly denied that the political bias of its employees filter into its products.

But the 85-page briefing, titled ?The Good Censor,? admits that Google and other tech platforms now ?control the majority of online conversations? and have undertaken a ?shift towards censorship? in response to unwelcome political events around the world.

Examples cited in the document include the 2016 election and the rise of Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) in Germany.

Responding to the leak, an official Google source said the document should be considered internal research, and not an official company position.

The briefing labels the ideal of unfettered free speech on the internet a ?utopian narrative? that has been ?undermined? by recent global events as well as ?bad behavior? on the part of users. It can be read in full below.

It acknowledges that major tech platforms, including Google, Facebook and Twitter initially promised free speech to consumers

Break up Amazon before it does any more damage to America
By Maureen Callahan
October 9, 2018

When Jeff Bezos announced that Amazon would be raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour last week, the reception was rapturous. The Seattle Times called it ?the just thing.? ?Good for them,? said President Trump?s chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow. ?I?m in favor of higher wages.? Bloomberg called it proof that ?an even higher minimum wage is probably safe for big, productive cities.? Senator Bernie Sanders, a chief Bezos antagonist, called it ?enormously important.? ?Unequivocally good news,? said The Washington Post.

The latter is owned by Jeff Bezos, an all-too-easily forgotten point these days. Because for all the questions to follow this announcement ? Why now? What is Amazon eliminating to pay for this? How much praise does Bezos, recently crowned the World?s Richest Man, deserve while paying, as of 2017, a median Amazon income of $28,446? ? we are not asking the real one.

When did we become The United States of Amazon?

Author, entrepreneur and NYU business professor Scott Galloway has emerged as one of Amazon?s fiercest critics. At last month?s Recode Code Commerce, Galloway gave a 45-minute talk on the future of retail that savaged Amazon and warned of the threats the company poses not just economically but philosophically and morally.
....
In his best-selling book ?The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google,? Galloway cites some arresting statistics: Far fewer U.S. households have a gun than Amazon Prime, by 30 to 64 percent. More Americans have Prime than voted in 2016 (55 percent), or earn $50,000 or more a year (55 percent), or go to church (51 percent). He calls Amazon?s ability to woo Prime subscribers at a $119 yearly cost the equivalent of ?entering into a monogamous relationship? with its consumers, who as of 2016 spent, on average, $193 per month. (Non-Prime members average $138 per month.)

From 2006 to 2016 Amazon?s stock price growth surged by 1,910 percent, destroying Sears, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Best Buy, Macy?s, Nordstrom, Target and Walmart.

"Palo Alto Mafia" Censoring Conservatives: Trump 2020 Campaign Manager
by Tyler Durden
Mon, 10/29/2018 - 13:50

President Trump's 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale renewed his criticism of social media companies on Monday for silencing conservative voices across several platforms, reports CNBC.

"I think that when the left found out that Facebook, a tool built by Silicon Valley, helped elect President Trump, they weren't very happy," Parscale told CBS This Morning. "And I think that you have multiple platforms I call the 'Palo Alto mafia' trying to stop that."

In the interview, Parscale credited the Trump campaign's dominance in Facebook advertising as a key contributor to its success in 2016. He referenced the wide gap between the number of Facebook ads Trump and Hillary Clinton placed during the run up to the election. Trump's team placed 5.9 million ads compared to Clinton's 66,000. -CNBC

Parscale, who was promoted to Trump's 2020 campaign manager after spearheading his digital media strategy in 2016
, was originally hired to build a website for Trump's exploratory campaign in 2015.

Trump and other conservatives have slammed social media platforms over allegations of anti-Republican bias. In July, Trump accused Twitter of "shadow banning" prominent Republicans, vowing to "look into this discriminatory and illegal practice at once!"
...
Trump's tweet came after Brad Parscale, along with Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, wrote a letter in May calling for the CEOs of Facebook and Twitter to address concerns over conservative censorship ahead of the 2020 election, as well as a call for transparency.

"We recognize that Facebook and Twitter operate in liberal corporate cultures," the letter reads. "However, rampant political bias is inappropriate for a widely used public forum."

...

In September, Breitbart obtained and published a leaked video of Google's top executives crying and comforting each other as they mourn Hillary Clinton's 2016 election loss.

BOKHARI: The Stakes in 2018 ? Tyranny by Silicon Valley and Far-Left Corporations
3 Nov 2018

Imagine living in a world where a few executives in Silicon Valley, along with a couple of credit card companies, get to control what you say, who you interact with, what causes you can support, whose products you can buy and whether you can run a business.

Political domination by Silicon Valley and progressive corporations likely outcome if Republican voters don?t turn out in sufficient numbers this Tuesday.

America has already caught a glimpse of the coming corporate dystopia. Over the past two years, we?ve seen a massive, largely unchecked assault on Americans? ability to enjoy their constitutional freedoms, led by unaccountable CEOs and relentlessly encouraged by Democrats and the establishment media.

The most striking example of this undemocratic collusion between political factions and corporations was the mass-ban of Alex Jones and Infowars. Love him or loathe him, Jones was the most censored man in media this year, facing permanent bans from Apple podcasts, Apple?s App Store, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, LinkedIn, Vimeo, Mailchimp, and even Pinterest. The mass purge followed weeks of lobbying by CNN for Silicon Valley to take action.

U.S. Postal Service loss triples, even as package deliveries rise

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Postal Service lost almost $4 billion in 2018 even as package deliveries rose, according to results released on Wednesday, potentially giving U.S. President Donald Trump ammunition against Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), which he claims pays too little for the agency?s services.
...
Trump, without presenting evidence, has accused the world?s largest online retailer repeatedly over the past year of taking advantage of USPS by not paying enough for deliveries to make the service profitable.

USPS reported operating revenue of $70.6 billion for fiscal year 2018, which ended on Sept. 30, as sales at its shipping and packages business rose 10 percent.

Conservative on the internet:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Defoe
Daniel Defoe (/dɪˈfoʊ/; c. 1660 ? 24 April 1731),[1] born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer and spy. He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, which is second only to the Bible in its number of translations
...
In Defoe's early life, he experienced some of the most unusual occurrences in English history: in 1665, 70,000 were killed by the Great Plague of London, and next year, the Great Fire of London left standing only Defoe's and two other houses in his neighbourhood.
...
The death of William III in 1702 once again created a political upheaval, as the king was replaced by Queen Anne who immediately began her offensive against Nonconformists.[10] Defoe was a natural target, and his pamphleteering and political activities resulted in his arrest and placement in a pillory on 31 July 1703, principally on account of his December 1702 pamphlet entitled The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters; Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church, purporting to argue for their extermination

Google offered STASI HQ for new Berlin office
Posted by EU Times on Nov 12th, 2018

Google is searching Berlin for some trendy real estate to call home ? a place that reflects the company?s unofficial, recently scrapped motto, ?Don?t Be Evil.? Hey, what about the ex-headquarters of East Germany?s secret police?

Our story begins innocently enough. The tech giant had originally planned to open its Google Campus startup hub in Berlin?s uber hipster district of Kreuzberg ? shocking, we know ? but disaster soon struck. Party-pooping locals organized against the move, citing the threat of rising rents and a general distaste for data-gobbling Silicon Valley behemoths.

Luckily, the Berlin district of Lichtenberg has a long, proud tradition of hosting data lovers: District officials have generously offered Google the former headquarters of the East German Stasi.

The plan has been endorsed by Danny Freymark, who sits in Berlin?s state parliament and is a member of Angela Merkel?s Christian Democratic Union (CDU). According to Freymark, Google would be an ideal investor to bring ?democracy? to the old secret police stomping grounds. The plan has reportedly also received support from other local officials, with one correctly noting that the area was perfect for Google because there is no risk of ?gentrification.?

Stasi -  The Untold Story of the East German Secret Police
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By JOHN O. KOEHLER -  Westview Press
...

"The Stasi was much, much worse than the Gestapo, if you consider only the oppression of its own people," according to Simon Wiesenthal of Vienna, Austria, who has been hunting Nazi criminals for half a century. "The Gestapo had 40,000 officials watching a country of 80 million, while the Stasi employed 102,000 to control only 17 million." One might add that the Nazi terror lasted only twelve years, whereas the Stasi had four decades in which to perfect its machinery of oppression, espionage, and international terrorism and subversion.

To ensure that the people would become and remain submissive, East German communist leaders saturated their realm with more spies than had any other totalitarian government in recent history.

Jeff Bezos: ?Amazon Will Fail, Amazon Will Go Bankrupt?
16 Nov 2018

In a recorded company meeting, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos declared, ?One day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt.?

?Amazon is not too big to fail? In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt,? Bezos declared in the internal meeting, according to CNBC. ?If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years.?

?If we start to focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on our customers, that will be the beginning of the end,? he continued. ?We have to try and delay that day for as long as possible.?

Bezos reportedly made the statement in response to a question about department store chain Sears? bankruptcy.

Bezos is currently the richest man in the world, and in July, it was reported that Amazon is set to capture 50 percent of the U.S. e-commerce market.

Last month, it was reported that Amazon is looking to make even more money by rapidly expanding its private brands business.

Amazon and Bezos have repeatedly been criticized by President Trump, who claimed the company is putting ?thousands of retailers out of business.?

Founded under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church and with the support of prominent residents of Middletown, the now-secular university was the first institution of higher education to be named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. About 20 unrelated colleges and universities were subsequently named after Wesley. Wesleyan, along with Amherst College and Williams College, is a member of the Little Three colleges.

Admission standards at Wesleyan are considered "most selective" by U.S. News & World Report.[129] The Princeton Review gives the University an admissions selectivity rating of 97 out of 99.
