20/20 on SDI "Star Wars" Deaths (1989)

This segment of 20/20, entitled "Grave Secrets" and reported by Stone Phillips in London, aired on ABC on May 5, 1989. Its subject is a series of mysterious deaths in the 1980s of scientists in England and other European countries who were engaged in top-secret military and defense projects, some connected to America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), aka "Star Wars." The deaths were designated as accidents and suicides, although many of them seem quite bizarre. Phillips interviews a British investigative reporter named Tony Collins; an opposition member of Parliament named Douglas Hoyle who offers a lone voice calling for an official probe; and various widows of the scientists, some of whom suspect foul play and some of whom cite other causes. It was quite an under-reported story back in the 1980s, so this news report was something of a surprise. As far as I know, the mystery of this pattern of deaths has never been solved or officially investigated.
