Dark Blue Eyes: Learn About People With This Unique Color
March 12, 2015 John D. Moore Men's Blog

Blue eyes are simply beautiful to look at. They are also fairly uncommon among the masses! It has been estimated that only 8% of the world?s population has blue eyes. To give you an idea of just how unique blue are, consider this factoid.

Right now, it is estimated that somewhere around 7 billion people live on the planet. Going by the math, this means only 56 million people have some shade of blue as an eye color.

There are only a handful of celebrities who have blue eyes and even a smaller number who are male.

If you are a person with blue eyes ? consider yourself lucky!

...

In January of 2008, research was published by the University of Copenhagen that suggests blue eyes can be traced to one common ancestor. Scientists believe that somewhere between six and ten million years ago, a genetic mutation occurred that paved the way for blue-eyes in humans today.

Myths About Blue Eyes

Blue eyes are fairly rare and therefore desired by many. Because of this, it makes sense that a number of myths exist about people with blue eyes. What follows are a few of the big ones. Keep in mind there are many more than the ones listed here!

Blue eyed people are more attractive.
Blue eyed people possess supernatural powers.
Blue eyed people have more intense relationships.
Blue eyed people are better in bed.
Blue eyed people live healthier life styles
Blue eyed people are more connected to the earth
    Blue eyed people live longer

Do you have blue eyes? You're more likely to be an alcoholic: Those with light coloured irises are more partial to a drink

Study found people with light coloured eyes - blue, green, grey and brown - are more likely to become alcoholics than those with dark brown eyes
Strongest tendency for alcoholism was found in blue-eyed people
Parts of genes that determine eye colour line up along same chromosome as the genes related to excessive alcohol use, researchers discovered
Clinics diagnosing alcoholism could look at eye colour, experts said

probably the closest - Sean Bean  :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Bean
Shaun Mark Bean[3] was born on 17 April 1959 in Handsworth, a suburb of Sheffield, which was then part of West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of Rita (n?e Tuckwood) and Brian K. Bean (1934?).[4][5] He has a younger sister, Lorraine. His paternal grandfather, Harold Bean Jr. (1914??), was a stud mill labourer.[5] His father owned a fabrication shop that employed 50 people, including Bean's mother, who worked as a secretary. Despite becoming relatively wealthy, the family never moved away from the council estate as they preferred to remain close to friends and family.[6] As a child, Bean smashed a glass door during an argument, which left a piece of glass embedded in his leg that briefly impeded his walking, and left a large scar.[4] This prevented him from pursuing his ambition of playing football professionally.

He's been beheaded, shot, blown up, hanged, buried alive, impaled, crushed, and even run off a cliff by a herd of cattle. Spoiler alert: Sean Bean is really ...

The Vikings and Baron Dupuytren's disease
Adrian E. Flatt, MDcorresponding author1
Author information ► Copyright and License information ► Disclaimer

Dupuytren?s disease (DD) is an ancient affliction of unknown origin.
It is defined by Dorland as shortening, thickening, and fibrosis of the palmar fascia producing a flexion deformity of a finger. Tradition has it that the disease originated with the Vikings, who spread it throughout Northern Europe and beyond as they traveled and intermarried. After being present for hundreds of years, DD was named in the 19th century after a famous French surgeon, who was not the first to describe it. This article reviews the history of DD and describes its incidence, clinical manifestations, and treatment.
Go to:
THE VIKINGS

In the year 865, ?a great heathen army? of Vikings landed on England?s east coast; an earlier raid on the monastery of Lindisfarne prompted a cleric of the times to say, ?Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race.? By the 10th century, 3 of England?s 4 kingdoms were dominated by the Vikings, who gradually converted to Christianity and settled in the conquered territories (1).

The Viking age of exploration, trading, and colonization lasted nearly 300 years. They raided as far as Newfoundland to the west, the Mediterranean and its many ports to the south, and the Caspian Sea?by way of the rivers of Eastern Europe, such as the Volga and Dneiper?to the east.

The areas bordering the North Sea were significantly colonized, with Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Holland, and Belgium being principally involved. Vikings were present in Scotland for nearly 500 years. They left behind many Scandinavian family and place names that replaced the original Gaelic. They also left behind DD, which has persisted in some areas to this day; in Scotland, for example, since the 15th century the flexed fingers of adult male bagpipers have been known as ?the curse of the MacCrimmons.? In England, the Vikings who settled in the area of East Anglia became farmers, and to this day surnames derived from Scandinavian roots are common. My family name referred to those who settled on the flat lands of East Anglia. Like the Vikings, Flatt children were born with ash-blond hair, and many were blue eyed. This held true until ships of the Spanish Armada wrecked off the English coast in 1598. Survivors swam ashore and joined the local farmers; as a result, subsequent Flatt children were blond at birth but had jet-black hair by their teenaged years?as did I. The Flatts must have had strong genes, since neither my father nor I have had DD despite our Viking roots.
...

DD is usually painless at onset and insidious in its progress. However, I am constantly amazed at how patients will tolerate significant degrees of contracture and appear for advice only when they start to poke themselves in the eye when washing their face. Erik Moberg of Sweden contends that men are frequently sent for treatment by their wives, who are bothered by the clawlike manipulation with the hand.

A multitude of causes have been suggested for DD, but only heredity has general acceptance. Despite positive family histories, however, about 30% of cases are sporadic.

Based on all the information I've been able to glean over the years, people who both (a) have green eyes and (b) are left-handed make up less than one-half of one-percent of the world population.

Yours truly being one of them.

If that has any meaningful significance, I'm unaware of it.

Comparisons have been made to Walt Whitman's poem "O Captain! My Captain!" in its use of the rank to mean Abraham Lincoln.[24]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Captain!_My_Captain!
"O Captain! My Captain!" is an extended metaphor poem written in 1865 by Walt Whitman, about the death of American president Abraham Lincoln.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
    But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
                Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up -  for you the flag is flung - for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths - for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
    Here captain! dear father!
        This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
              You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;

15 Facts About Redheads

It's the rarest hair color in the world: perhaps that's why we love them. We've searched hard and uncovered our favorite facts about redheads: click through to check them out.

Usually redheads are born with brown eyes. A few lucky ones have the red-hair-blue-eyes combination.

Red hair never turns gray! It simply fades with age from red to blonde to silvery white

Redheads are more likely to be left-handed than any other hair color.

More than a week after Lou Reed's death, a tribute has arrived that's too poetic and touching to be overlooked. Patti Smith has been vocal about honoring her fellow New York rock trailblazer, telling Rolling Stone the former Velvet Underground frontman was "a very special poet" and highlighting "Pale Blue Eyes" as a personal favorite Reed song in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter. [She said that the fragile, weary ballad reminded her of her late, blue-eyed husband, guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith. "I never fail to think of him and his gaze when I'm singing that or hear that song," she said. "Lou had a gift of taking very simple lines, 'Linger on, your pale blue eyes,' and make it so they magnify on their own. That song has always haunted me."] She also reflects vividly on her encounters with Reed, over the years and just recently before his death ("his dark eyes seemed to contain an infinite and benevolent sadness"). WV Music Hall of Fame inductee 'Sonic' Smith remembered as musician, 'beautiful father'
By Bill Lynch Staff writer Feb 7, 2018

When people remember guitarist Fred ?Sonic? Smith, they usually remember that he was part of the Detroit music scene, not his obscure roots to Lincoln County.

Smith, who died in 1994, was part of the MC5 (Motor City 5), a group that helped define the power rock side of the Motor City sound that rose in the latter part of the 1960s.

While mostly active through the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, the guitarist ? who will be honored Saturday night at the Culture Center during the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame class of 2018 induction ceremony ? influenced generations of rock, punk and indie rock musicians.
...
Fred?s family came from Appalachia. His mother was the daughter of a coal-miner-turned-farmer who lived in Lincoln County.

Fred?s father came from Kentucky.

The guitarist?s parents lived in Lincoln County, where in September 1948, he was born.

Smith said her husband was ?born in Broad Branch, in a little farmhouse by a railroad. The midwife couldn?t make it.?

So, his grandparents assisted with the birth.

?He was born there right in their house,? she said.

Dire Straits Lyrics  "Single Handed Sailor"

Two in the morning, dry-dock town
The rivers rolls away in the night
Little gypsy moth she's all tied down
She quiver in the wind and the light

Yeah and a sailing ship just held down in chains
From the lazy days of sail
She's just lying there in silent pain
He lean on the turist rail

A mother and her baby and the college of war
In the concrete graves
You never wanna fight against the river law
Nobody rules the waves
Yeah and on a night when the lazy wind is a-wailing
Around the Cutty Sark
Single handed sailor goes sailing
Sailing away in the dark

He's upon the bridge on the self same night
The mariner of dry dock land
Two in the morning, but there is one green light
And a man on the barge of sand
She's gonna slip away below him
Away from the things he's done
But he just shouts "Hey man, what do you call this thing?"
He could have said "Pride of London"

On a night when the lazy wind is a-wailing
Around the Cutty Sark
Yeah the single handed sailor goes sailing
Sailing away in the dark

"Once Upon A Time In The West"

Some people get a cheap laugh breaking up the speed limit
Scaring the pedestrians for a minute
Crossing up progress driving on the grass
Leaving just enough for room to pass
Sunday driver never took a test
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Yes, it's no use saying that you don't know nothing
It's still gonna get you if don't do something
Sitting on a fence that's a dangerous course
Oh, you could even catch a bullet from the peace-keeping force
Even the hero gets a bullet in the chest
Oh yeah, once upon a time in the west

Mother Mary your children are slaughtered
Some of you mothers ought to lock up your daughters
Who's protecting the innocenti
Heap big trouble in the land of plenty
Tell me how we're gonna do what's best
You guess once upon a time in the west

Dire Straits ? Down To The Waterline

Sweet surrender on the quayside
You remember we used to run and hide
In the shadow of the cargoes I take you one time
And we're counting all the numbers down to the waterline

Near misses on the dog leap stairways
French kisses in the darkened doorways
A foghorn blowing out wild and cold
A policeman shines a light upon my shoulder

Up comes a coaster fast and silent in the nihgt
Over my shoulder all you can see are the pilot lights
No money in our jackets and our jeans are torn
Your hands are cold but your lips are warm

She can see him on the jetty where they used to go
She can feel him in the places where the sailors go
When she's walking by the river and the railway line
She can still hear him whisper
Let's go down to the waterline

Mark Freuder Knopfler, OBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, record producer and film score composer. He was the lead guitarist, lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Dire Straits, which he co-founded with his younger brother, David Knopfler, in 1977. He was born in Glasgow but raised near Newcastle upon Tyne, England

Mark Freuder Knopfler was born on 12 August 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, to an English mother, Louisa Mary, and a Hungarian-Jewish father, Erwin Knopfler.[9][10][11][12] His mother was a teacher and his father was an architect and a chess player whose anti-fascist sympathies and Jewish parentage forced him to flee from his native Hungary in 1939.[13] Knopfler later described his father as a Marxist agnostic

From 1987 to 1992 Mark Knopfler played on guitars that are from Rudy Pensa in New York City. The first guitar was created by John Suhr who now is at Fender Guitars. These were called Pensa-Suhr.

Van Morrison - Into The Mystic
We were born before the wind ... I want to rock your gypsy soul ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Morrison
Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE (born 31 August 1945) is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and record producer. In 2016, he was knighted for his musical achievements and his services to tourism and charitable causes in Northern Ireland.

George Ivan "Van" Morrison was born on 31 August 1945, at 125 Hyndford Street, Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland, as the only child of George Morrison, a shipyard electrician, and Violet Stitt Morrison, who had been a singer and tap dancer in her youth.[8] Morrison's family were working class Protestants descended from the Ulster Scots population that settled in Belfast.[9][10][11] From 1950 to 1956, Morrison, who began to be known as "Van" during this time, attended Elmgrove Primary School.[12] His father had what was at the time one of the largest record collections in Ulster (acquired during his time in Detroit, Michigan, in the early 1950s)[13] and the young Morrison grew up listening to artists such as Jelly Roll Morton, Ray Charles, Lead Belly, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and Solomon Burke;[12][14] of whom he later said, "If it weren't for guys like Ray and Solomon, I wouldn't be where I am today. Those guys were the inspiration that got me going. If it wasn't for that kind of music, I couldn't do what I'm doing now."

Mitchell was born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Myrtle Marguerite (McKee) and William Andrew Anderson.[15] Her mother's ancestors were Scottish and Irish;[16] her father was from a Norwegian family that possibly had some Sami ancestry.[17][18] Her mother was a teacher while her father was a Royal Canadian Air Force flight lieutenant who instructed new pilots at RCAF Station Fort Macleod.[19] She later moved with her parents to various bases in western Canada. After the war she settled with her family in Saskatchewan. She later sang about her small-town upbringing in several of her songs, including "Song for Sharon".

What Is Morgellons Disease? A Primer on Joni Mitchell's Rare Condition

Joni Mitchell, who entered the hospital yesterday (March 31), has long suffered from a little-understood condition called Morgellons disease. The intensity of the disease caused the singer to almost completely stop performing, recording, and traveling in recent years.

Joni Mitchell Hospitalized

The 71-year-old singer first discussed her battle with Morgellons in a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times, telling them she had "this weird, incurable disease that seems like it's from outer space." Her vivid description left many fans concerned: "Fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral."

In 2013, she told The Star, ?I haven?t been doing much lately because I?ve just come through about seven years of a flattening kind of illness. I?m not cured but I?ve found a helpful physician way outside the box. Western medicine says this doesn?t even exist; it?s a psychotic disease. It?s not.?
...
In the 2014 book Joni Mitchell: In Her Own Words, she elaborated on the severity of her symptoms, saying "I couldn't wear clothing. I couldn't leave my house for several years. Sometimes it got so I'd have to crawl across the floor. My legs would cramp up, just like a polio spasm. It hit all of the places where I had polio."

http://www.somethingawful.com/news/morgellons-debunked-vaccines/

The CDC is back once again to try to "debunk" (read: muddy the waters) claims from people suffering from Morgellons. This chronic and debilitating disease causes skin lesions and painful alien fibrous material to burst out of your skin on your arms and legs. Sometimes there are nodules involved or little metal rods. One time my baby found part of a gum wrapper looking thing that grew out of her arm on account of Morgellons. It was not a gum wrapper it was sort of shimmery on one side and had little threads on the other side.

"Melissa" is a song by American rock band the Allman Brothers Band, released in August 1972 as the second single from the group's third studio album, Eat a Peach. The song was written by vocalist Gregg Allman long before the founding of the group. It was first written in 1967

Melissa- Allman brothers

This song is from the 'Eat a Peach" album and the first song the band did without Duane Allman, who died four months before it was released. The lyrics: "Crossroads, will you ever let him go" is perhaps a reference to Robert Johnson, blues guitarist, who went to a crossroad and solded his soul to the devil.

"Melissa"

Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast

Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...

Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name

No one hears his lonely sighs,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...

Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.

Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
or will his spirit float away?

But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.

Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

She was born a brunette but Fox thought she would make it better as a blonde so she had is dyed. Her eyes blue, not brown. In some photos her eyes look dark however that could have been due to poor lighting.

Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 ? August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and was emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962.[1] More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon

The Argosy, Volumes 41-42

281 Extracts from the Diary of a Young Lady.
... I inhaled sea breezes, I smelt sea smells, I saw sea sights, I heard sea sounds, I was happy

Suddenly I saw a boat being dragged down near to where I stood, dragged down by four sailors. Their dress and something about them sent a thrill through me. And then, one man turning round, I beheld a dark thin face, with a pair of blue eyes in it, and the thrill came again. A perfect shiver, horribly intense; the kind which creeps over one, coming one knows not why or from whence, at the call of a ghost story that sounds too true.

And was it not for a ghost that I felt it now ' A ghost coming back from the dead days of the past'

I do not suppose that dark-faced, blue-eyed sailor is the lad I hid two years ago.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

Paul Kantner ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Kantner
Paul Lorin Kantner[1] (March 17, 1941 - January 28, 2016) was an American rock musician. He is best known as the co-founder, rhythm guitarist, and occasional vocalist of Jefferson Airplane, a leading psychedelic rock band of the counterculture era. He continued these roles as a member of Jefferson Starship, Jefferson Airplane's successor band.
...
Kantner was born on March 17, 1941, in San Francisco, California,[1] the son of Cora Lee (Fortier) and Paul Schell Kantner. Kantner had a half-brother and a half-sister by his father's first marriage, both much older than he. His father was of German descent, and his mother was of French and German ancestry.[3] His mother died when he was eight years old, and Kantner remembered that he was not allowed to attend her funeral. His father sent him to the circus instead.[2]

After his mother's death, his father, who was a traveling salesman, sent young Kantner to Catholic military boarding school.

Today, I feel like pleasing you
More than before
Today, I know what I want to do
But I don't know what for
To be living for you
Is all I want to do
To be loving you
It'll all be there
When my dreams come true

Today, you'll make me say
That I somehow have changed
Today, you'll look into my eyes
I'm just not the same
To be any more than all I am
Would be a lie
I'm so full of love
I could burst apart
And start to cry

Today, everything you want
I swear it will all come true
Today, I realize how much
I?m in love with you
With you standing here
I could tell the world
What it means to love
To go on from here
I can't use words
They don't say enough

Please, please listen to me
It's taken so long to come true
It's all for you, all for you

Paul Kantner's 10 Trippiest Lyrics

Revisit the Jefferson Airplane co-founder's wildest psychedelic visions

Paul Kantner's legacy is a lysergic one. As a co-founder and driving force behind Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, as well as a solo artist, the late singer-guitarist was a pioneer of acid rock in the Sixties. But even well into the Nineties and beyond, he was still making music that resonated with strange visions, metaphysical insights and magnificent weirdness. From hippie daydreams to transcendental sci-fi speculation, Kantner's lyrics have never been anything less than otherworldly. Here are 10 choice examples

Jefferson Airplane, "D.C.B.A.-25" (1967)

https://youtu.be/vTe1oPP6n7A
Kantner hit the ground tripping with his only composition on Jefferson Airplane's breakout album, Surrealistic Pillow. The title couldn't telegraph the song's intent more plainly: D, C, B, and A are the chords, and 25 refers to LSD-25. But it's the lyrics to "D.C.B.A.-25" that best showcase Kantner's nascent knack for psychotropic bliss: "Here in crystal chandelier I'm home/Too many days I've left unstoned.

It's time you walked away and set me free
I must move away and leave you be
Time's been good to us my friend
Wait, and see how it will end
We come and go as we please
(We come and go as we please)
(That's how it has to be)

Here in crystal chandelier, I'm home
Too many days I've left unstoned
If you don't mind happiness
Purple pleasure-fields in the sun
Ah, don't you know I'm runnin' home
(Don't you know I'm runnin' home)
(To a place to you unknown)

I take great peace in your sitting there
Searching for myself, I find a place there
I see the people of the world
Where they are and what they could be
I can but dance behind your smile
(I can but dance behind your smile)
(You were the world to me, for a while)

Matthew Fisher wins his battle to be recognised as co-writer on the song

Procol Harum member Matthew Fisher has won a court case to be named the official co-writer of the band?s classic 1967 song ?A Whiter Shade Of Pale?

Fisher claims he wrote the song?s organ melody, and Law Lords today (July 30) ruled that he is entitled to his share of future royalties from the song.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Fisher
Matthew Charles Fisher (born 7 March 1946) is an English musician, songwriter and producer. He is best known for playing the Hammond organ on the 1967 single "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum, for which he subsequently won a songwriting credit.
...

Fisher was born and grew up in Addiscombe, Croydon.[2] He attended Selhurst Grammar School, playing the organ at morning assemblies.[citation needed] He started playing in bands in his teens, initially playing bass guitar, but around 1964, after hearing The Animals and Georgie Fame, he decided that he would prefer to be an organist instead. After briefly considering a career as a music teacher, enrolling in the Guildhall School of Music for a year, he dropped out, obtained two Vox Continental organs, and used them on tour with The Gamblers, backing band to Billy Fury. After The Gamblers, he played with various local groups before joining Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers in 1966

Josh Phillips (born 19 December 1962, Rochester, Kent, England) is a rock keyboardist and composer. He first played Hammond organ with Procol Harum in 1993 and has been the band's organist since 2004

He began his career at sixteen playing organ on the soundtrack to Quadrophenia, and he later appeared in the film with his band Cross Section

Garth Hudson's Belongings Sold Off at Garage Sale
Ex-Band musician had failed to pay rent for seven years
 By Rolling Stone
February 25, 2013

The Band's Garth Hudson saw some of his belongings sold off this weekend by his landlord in a Kingston, New York, garage sale after failing to pay rent on his loft space for about seven years, the Times Herald-Record reports. The multi-instrumentalist, most-known for his organ and keyboard playing, kept the space for storage. He stored everything from personal possessions and household items to handwritten sheet music, and among the goodies are uncashed checks, including one issued from EMI in 1979 for $26,000.

Robert Mitchum Dick Cavett 1971

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Mitchum
Robert Charles Durman Mitchum (August 6, 1917 ? July 1, 1997) was an American film actor, director, author, poet, composer, and singer. Mitchum rose to prominence for his starring roles in several classic films noir, and is generally considered a forerunner of the antiheroes prevalent in film during the 1950s and 1960s. His best-known films include Out of the Past (1947), The Night of the Hunter (1955), and Cape Fear (1962). Mitchum was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Story of G.I. Joe (1945).

Mitchum is rated number 23 on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest male stars of Classic American Cinema

Robert Mitchum was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1917 into a Norwegian-Irish Methodist family.[2] His mother Ann Harriet Gunderson was a Norwegian immigrant and sea captain's daughter; his father James Thomas Mitchum was a shipyard and railroad worker of Irish descent
.[3] His older sister, Annette (known as Julie Mitchum during her acting career), was born in 1914. Their father James Mitchum was crushed to death in a railyard accident in Charleston, South Carolina in February 1919, when Robert was less than two years old and Annette was not yet five.

Sterling Hayden, 2nd interview of three, Part 2 of 4 (OSS service)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Hayden
Sterling Walter Hayden (born Sterling Relyea Walter; March 26, 1916 ? May 23, 1986) was an American actor and author. For most of his career as a leading man, he specialized in westerns and film noir, such as Johnny Guitar, The Asphalt Jungle, and The Killing. Later on he became noted for appearing in supporting roles such as Gen. Jack D. Ripper in Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). He also played the Irish American policeman Captain McCluskey in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather in 1972 and the novelist Roger Wade in 1973's The Long Goodbye. He played the role of Leo Dalc? in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 in 1976. At 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m),[2] he towered over most other actors.
...
Hayden was born in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, to George and Frances Walter, who named him Sterling Relyea Walter.[3][4] After his father died, he was adopted at age 9 by James Hayden and renamed Sterling Walter Hayden. As a child he lived in coastal towns of New England,[5] and in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Maine. He attended Wassookeag School in Dexter, Maine.

Hayden dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and took a job as mate on a schooner.[1] His first voyage was to Newport Beach, California, from New London, Connecticut.[5] Later, he was a fisherman on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, ran a charter yacht, and served as a fireman on 11 trips to Cuba aboard a steamer.[5] He skippered a trading schooner in the Caribbean after earning his master's license, and in 1937 he served as mate on a world cruise of the schooner Yankee.[5] After serving as sailor and fireman on larger vessels and sailing around the world several times, he was awarded his first command at age 22, skippering the square rigger Florence C. Robinson 7,700 miles from Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Tahiti in 1938.[5][6][7] Hayden spoke of his nautical experiences before the monthly meeting of the Adventurers' Club of New York on March 21, 1940.[8]
...
After two film roles, he left Hollywood and joined the United States Marine Corps as a private, under the name John Hamilton, a nom de guerre he never used otherwise. While at Parris Island, he was recommended for Officer Candidate School.

After graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was transferred to service as an undercover agent with William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan's Office of the Coordinator of Information. He remained there after it became the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).[9][10][11]

As OSS agent John Hamilton, his World War II service included sailing with supplies from Italy to Yugoslav partisans and parachuting into fascist Croatia. Hayden, who also participated in the Naples?Foggia campaign and established air crew rescue teams in enemy-occupied territory, became a first lieutenant on September 13, 1944, and a captain on February 14, 1945. He received the Silver Star (for gallantry in action in the Balkans and Mediterranean; "Lt. Hamilton displayed great courage in making hazardous sea voyages in enemy-infested waters and reconnaissance through enemy-held areas"), a Bronze Arrowhead device for parachuting behind enemy lines, and a commendation from Yugoslavia's Marshal Tito. He left active duty on December 24, 1945

...
On 8th March, 1951, the Un-American Activities Committee began an "Investigation of Communism in the Entertainment Field". Sterling Hayden appeared on 10th April. Robert Vaughn, the author of Only Victims: A Study of Show Business Blacklisting (1972) has argued that "Hayden... was the first of many who elected to put the continuance of their careers ahead of personal and professional friendships." People named by Hayden included Robert Lees, Karen Morley and Abraham Polonsky. Hayden also said: "One of them was someone named Bernie but I never knew his last name. He was a sort of intellectual type and led the educational discussions." He was talking about the young screenwriter Bernard Gordon who was later named by William Alland.

Hayden later commented in his autobiography, Wanderer (1963): "Not often does a man find himself eulogized for having behaved in a manner that he himself despises. I subscribed to a press-clipping service. They sent me two thousand clips from papers east and west, large and small, and from dozens of magazines. Most had nothing but praise for my one-shot stoolie show. Only a handful - led by The New York Times - denounced this abrogation of constitutional freedoms whereby the stoolie could gain status in a land of frightened people."

Hayden confession allowed him to continue making films. This included The Star (1952), Flaming Feather (1952), Hellgate (1952), Fighter Attack (1953), Kansas Pacific (1953), Naked Alibi (1954), Arrow In the Dust (1954), Johnny Guitar (1954), Suddenly (1954), Top Gun (1955), The Last Command (1955), The Killing (1956), Crime of Passion (1957), Valerie (1957), Gun Battle at Monterey (1957), Zero Hour (1957) and Terror in a Texas Town (1958).

On 22nd November, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Hayden had severe doubts that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman and he supported Mark Lane in his attempts to reopen the case and joined the Citizens Committee of Inquiry. Lane pointed out in Plausible Denial: Was the CIA Involved in the Assassination of JFK (1991): "Having almost exhausted the available traditional resources, I turned toward an informal network that had been established years before... I formed an organization... the Citizens Committee of Inquiry. Its purpose, from the time it was founded in 1964, was to bring together people interested in securing the facts about the death of the president. It was clear that an extraordinary response was required to meet the effort of the police and spy organizations to offer a sanitized solution to the murder and to discourage serious inquiry."

Other films that Hayden appeared in included Dr. Strangelove (1964), Hard Contract (1969), Loving (1970), The Godfather (1972), The Long Goodbye (1973), The Final Programme (1973), Deadly Strangers (1974), 1900 (1976), King of the Gypsies (1978), Winter Kills (1979), The Outsider (1980), Nine to Five (1980), Gas (1981) and Venom (1981).

Sterling Hayden died of prostate cancer at his home in Sausalito on 23rd May, 1986.

4/17/2017 ? Military History Magazine
Sterling Hayden sacrificed his sailing dreams, a budding Hollywood career, a marriage and his very name to aid communist rebels fighting the Axis onslaught in Yugoslavia.

On Christmas night 1943 Marine Corps 2nd Lt. ?John Hamilton??the nom de guerre of American film actor Sterling Hayden?landed on the Yugoslav island of Korcula aboard a broken-down motorboat in the midst of a German attack. An operative with the Office of Strategic Services, he had crossed the Adriatic Sea from Allied-held southern Italy to make contact with Marshal Josip Broz Tito?s communist rebels, drop supplies and recon the Dalmatian islands to learn the strength of German landing forces. Hamilton was surveilling Korcula by jeep with a partisan officer and two rebels when the men ran straight into an ambush. German gunfire killed the driver, while Hamilton and the remaining two men shot their way out.

The partisans abandoned Korcula, and Hamilton joined them over the next several days on the islands of Hvar, Brac and Vis, shuttling through waters patrolled at night by German fast-attack E-boats and in daylight by Bf 109 fighters. On Hvar the young OSS agent made his way to partisan headquarters. As the buildings were under constant attack by Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers, Hamilton conducted a six-hour conference outdoors with partisan officers to collect intelligence on German positions in the islands and on the Yugoslav mainland before returning to Italy.

Hamilton received the Silver Star for that mission. The medal recommendation from his OSS detachment chief praised his ability to provide ?complete information concerning the situation in the Dalmatian coastal areas? and described Hamilton?s harrowing New Year?s Eve return trip, dodging German naval patrols while crossing the Adriatic amid ?a severe winter storm.? In his own after-action report Hamilton stressed a detail the medal recommendation omitted: He and his crew had ferried refugees to Vis, where some 6,000 other Yugoslavs had holed up, believing Allied troops would soon come to their relief. He made no mention of the storm. In a letter to a friend three weeks after the action he wrote, ?I know now that my entire life before this was one endless search for pleasure. Well, maybe it isn?t too late to make up for the wasted years.? He was 27 at the time.

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

Flight 777 ? The Mystery of Leslie Howard
by Ian Colvin

On 1 June 1943, Flight 777, a Douglas DC-3 civilian airliner, en route from Lisbon to Britain, was shot down over the Bay of Biscay by a squadron of Luftwaffe Junkers JU-88. Among the dead was the film star Leslie Howard, who had returned from Hollywood to England in 1939 to help the British war effort.  Howard, star of Gone with the Wind and The Scarlet Pimpernel, had acted in and directed several anti-Nazi films, such as Pimpernel Smith and The First of the Few and was a fervent propagandist against Hitler?s regime.  He was travelling with his tax adviser, cigar-smoking Alfred Chenhalls, who bore a resemblance to Winston Churchill ? Churchill was at that time about to fly back from an Allied conference in North Africa.  Also on board was leading anti-Nazi activist Wilfrid Israel, who had helped Jewish refugees escape from the Holocaust.

Ian Colvin carried out an exhaustive investigation into the incident, and interviewed former Luftwaffe personnel, to discover why the civilian aircraft was targeted, and who ordered its destruction.  Flight 777, first published in 1957, was republished by Pen and Sword Books on the 70th anniversary year of the wartime tragedy in 2013 with a new introduction and updated notes based on information that has since become available from recently opened National Archive files.

Leslie Howard
Biography
Born April 3, 1893 in Forest Hill, London, England, UK
Died June 1, 1943 in Bay of Biscay  (casualty of war)
Birth Name   Leslie Howard Steiner
Height    5' 10?" (1.79 m)

Leslie Howard Stainer was born in London, to Lilian (Blumberg) and Ferdinand "Frank" Steiner. His father was a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, and his English mother was of German Jewish, and mostly English, descent. Leslie went to Dulwich College. After school, he worked as a bank clerk until the outbreak of World War I, when he went into the army. In 1917, diagnosed as shell-shocked, he was invalided out and advised to take up acting as therapy. In a few years, his name was famous on the stages of London and New York. He made his first movie in 1914 (The Heroine of Mons (1914)). He became known as the perfect Englishman (slim, tall, intellectual and sensitive), a part that he played in many movies, and a part women would dream about. His first sound movie came in 1930, Outward Bound (1930), an adaptation of the stage play in which he starred. In Never the Twain Shall Meet (1931) and Smilin' Through (1932), he played the Englishman role to the hilt. His screen persona could perhaps best be summed up by his role as Sir Percy Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), a foppish member of society.

It was Howard who insisted that Humphrey Bogart get the role of Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), a role that Bogart had played in the stage production. As he became more successful, he also became quite picky about which roles he would do, and usually performed in only two films a year. In 1939, he played the character that will always be associated with him, that of Ashley Wilkes, the honor-bound disillusioned intellectual Southern gentleman in Gone with the Wind (1939).

However, war clouds were gathering over England, and he devoted all his energy on behalf of the war effort. He directed films, wrote articles and made radio broadcasts. He died in 1943, when the KLM plane he was in was shot down by German fighters over the Bay of Biscay.

Byron House Introduction

The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves?

Byron House in Harrow Shanghai, is named after George Gordon Noel Byron, 6th Baron Byron, who attended Harrow School in London between 1801 and 1805.

Lord Byron is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and is best known for his amorous lifestyle and brilliant use of the English language.

Born in 1788, Lord Byron was one of the leading figures of the Romantic Movement in early 19th century England. After leading an unconventional lifestyle and producing a massive amount of emotion-stirring literary works, Byron died at a young age in Greece.

The current House Master of Byron House is Mr. Mark Batten, the Director of Performing Arts, who teaches Music and Drama. The House Tutor, is Miss. Amy Huang, the Head of Mandarin.

Two pupils in Bryon House, write; Our house is a really relaxed house, as we don?t put ourselves or anyone else under pressure. Our House Master Mr. Batten is also a really nice, funny and clever guy and he loves music and drama. The second teacher in our house is Miss. Huang, she is the Head of the Mandarin department and teaches the native speakers Mandarin. The last House competition that we won was the Christmas Tree Decorating competition. Also, in other competitions, we have done really well and we have never been in last place

Carol Lynley (born February 13, 1942) is an American actress and former child model.

Lynley was born Carole Ann Jones in Manhattan, the daughter of Frances (n?e Felch) and Cyril Jones.[1] Her father was Irish and her mother, a native of New England, was of English, Scottish, Welsh, and German ancestry. She began her career as a child model under the name Carolyn Lee. When she started acting after appearing on the April 22, 1957, cover of LIFE at 15,[2][3] she discovered that child actress Carolyn Lee (1935- , born Carolyn Copp[4]) had already registered the name; she modified it by using the final syllable of Carolyn and fusing it with Lee to make Lynle

Audie Leon Murphy is an American Legend, an iconic figure in American history, and a hero for all times. Audie Murphy came from humble roots to become our Nation's 'most decorated' combat soldier of World War II, amassing an unprecedented 33 decorations, medals, and citations, many of which were awarded multiple times. He was further honored by the Governments of France and Belgium as well.

Audie Murphy enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 after having been turned down by the Navy, Marines, and Army Air Corps. He spent 30 months in combat in World War Two and earned the Medal of Honor for his single-handed defeat in Eastern France of an estimated 250 enemy soldiers and six Jagdpanther tanks. For over one hour he remained alone atop a burning tank destroyer calling artillery adjustments and manning a .50 caliber machine gun while defending his unit against the onslaught of enemy dismounted infantry and armor. He was personally responsible for protecting his sector and certainly saving his unit from destruction.

During the course of the war Audie Murphy, with little formal education rose from the enlisted rank of Private to the rank of First Lieutenant. He continued his military career postwar as a member of the Texas National Guard and Army Reserve and retired with the rank of Major.

Madeleine of Valois (10 August 1520 ? 7 July 1537) was a French princess who became Queen of Scots as the first spouse of King James V.

Madeleine was born at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, the fifth child and third daughter of King Francis I of France and Claude, Duchess of Brittany (daughter of King Louis XII of France and Anne, Duchess of Brittany). Very frail from birth, she grew up in the warm and temperate Loire Valley region of France, rather than at Paris, as her father feared that the cold would destroy her delicate health. Together with her sister Margaret, she was raised by her aunt, Marguerite de Navarre. This lasted until her father remarried and his new wife, Eleanor of Austria, took them into her own household.[1] By her sixteenth birthday, she had contracted tuberculosis

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Zambaco
Maria Zambaco (29 April 1843, London ? 14 July 1914, Paris), born Marie Terpsithea Cassavetti (Greek: Μαρία Τερψιθέα Κασσαβέτη, sometimes spelled Maria Tepsithia Kassavetti or referred to as Mary), was a British artist and model of Greek descent. She was favoured by the Pre-Raphaelites.

Maria was a daughter of wealthy Anglo-Hellenic merchant Demetrios Cassavetti (d.1858) and his wife Euphrosyne (1822?1896) and niece of the Greek Consul and noted patron Alexander Constantine Ionides. Maria and her cousins Marie Spartali Stillman and Aglaia Coronio were known collectively among friends as "the Three Graces", after the Charites of Greek mythology. After inheriting her father's fortune in 1858, she was able to lead a more independent life and was known to go unchaperoned while still unmarried.[1]
...

In 1869, Edward Burne-Jones attempted to leave his wife for her, which caused a great scandal. Maria entreated him to commit suicide with her by laudanum overdose by the canal in Little Venice and the police had to be called.[9] After they broke up, Maria continued to appear in Burne-Jones' paintings as a sorceress or a temptress, such as his last major work of her, The Beguiling of Merlin, and the controversial Phyllis and Demopho?n, which was removed from display at the Royal Watercolour Society. Friends of the Burne-Jones family, such as Rosalind Howard cut Maria socially.[10]

Robert Palmer - Addicted To Love

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Palmer_(singer)
Robert Allen Palmer (19 January 1949 ? 26 September 2003) was an English singer-songwriter,[1] musician, and record producer
...
Palmer's father was a British naval intelligence officer stationed in Malta. Palmer moved with his family from Batley (West Yorkshire,  where he was born) to Scarborough, North Yorkshire in 1949. Influenced as a child by blues, soul and jazz music on American Forces Radio, Robert Palmer joined his first band, The Mandrakes, at the age of 15 whilst still at Scarborough High School for Boys. His first major break came with the departure of singer Jess Roden from the band The Alan Bown Set in 1969, after which Palmer was invited to London to sing on their single "Gypsy Girl".[5] The vocals for the album The Alan Bown Set!, originally recorded by Roden (and released in the US that way), were re-recorded by Palmer after the success of the single. According to music journalist Paul Lester, Palmer rose from northern clubs in England to become "elegant and sophisticated" and the master of several styles.[6]

In 1970 Palmer joined the 12-piece jazz-rock fusion band Dada, which featured singer Elkie Brooks and her husband Pete Gage. After a year, Palmer, Brooks and Gage formed soul/rock band Vinegar Joe. Palmer played rhythm guitar in the band, and shared lead vocals with Brooks. Signed to the Island Records label, they released three albums: Vinegar Joe (1972), Rock 'n' Roll Gypsies (1972) and Six Star General (1973), before disbanding in March 1974.[5][7] Brooks later said that Palmer "was a very good-looking guy", and that female fans were happy to find that Brooks and Palmer were not romantically linked.[8]

/...
Palmer died in a Paris hotel room from a heart attack on 26 September 2003 at the age of 54. He had been in the French capital after recording a television appearance in London for Yorkshire TV, a retrospective titled "My Kinda People".[6][19] He was survived by his parents, his son and daughter, his brother Mark, and his girlfriend Mary Ambrose.[18] Among those who paid tribute were Duran Duran, stating: "He was a very dear friend and a great artist. This is a tragic loss to the British music industry."[6]

His 1986 album, So, is his best-selling release and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S.[9][10] The album's most successful single, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and is MTV's most played music video of all time

Ahead of Snowden?s fast-approaching theatrical release, Peter Gabriel has shared his contribution to the film?s soundtrack: a plodding, hushed tone tune titled ?The Veil.?

The song is a very literal interpretation of the biopic?s premise, which traces the story of famed digital whistleblower Edward Snowden. ?Let it all go, set it all free / You let the world see / Exactly what is going on,? Gabriel sings of Snowden?s decision to leak classified information that revealed global surveillance by the U.S. government.

David Byrne (/bɜːrn/; born 14 May 1952) is a Scottish-American musician[2][3] who was the founding member, principal songwriter, and lead singer and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads (1975?1991). Byrne is a multi-instrumentalist and is known for his distinctive voice
..
David Byrne was born 14 May 1952, in Dumbarton, Scotland, to parents Tom (from Lambhill, Glasgow) and Emma. He is the elder of two children. Two years after his birth, his parents moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and then to Arbutus, Maryland, United States, when he was 8 or 9 years old. His father worked as an electronics engineer at Westinghouse. His mother later became a teacher. The family had left Scotland in part because work for his father's engineering skills was in short supply and in part because of the tensions in the wider family involved in his parents' 'mixed marriage', his father being Catholic and his mother being Presbyterian. Byrne recounted these events when he appeared on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 on 18 March 2018

Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

In a November 2016 interview with The Tab, he described his adolescence as "not particularly conventional", claiming that he exercised for three hours each day and largely abstained from alcohol ( he's a good viking )

The latter part of the 9th century saw a wave of Norse (Viking) settlers and the subsequent establishment of the Danelaw. The names of hamlets established by these settlers often end in thorpe, which means a farmstead.[38] Examples of such settlements in the Sheffield area are Grimesthorpe, Hackenthorpe, Jordanthorpe, Netherthorpe, Upperthorpe, Waterthorpe, and Woodthorpe.[39] By 918 the Danes south of the Humber had submitted to Edward the Elder, and by 926 Northumbria was under the control of King ?thelstan.

In 937 the combined armies of Olaf Guthfrithson, Viking king of Dublin, Constantine, king of Scotland and Owain ap Dyfnwal, king of the Cumbrians, invaded England. The invading force was met and defeated by an army from Wessex and Mercia led by King ?thelstan at the Battle of Brunanburh. The location of Brunanburh is unknown, but some historians[40][41] have suggested a location between Tinsley in Sheffield and Brinsworth in Rotherham, on the slopes of White Hill.[18] After the death of King Athelstan in 939 Olaf Guthfrithson invaded again and took control of Northumbria and part of Mercia. Subsequently, the Anglo-Saxons, under Edmund, re-conquered the Midlands, as far as Dore, in 942, and captured Northumbria in 944.
