Russian Jets ‘Harass’ U.S. Warship Near Syria
« on: April 10, 2018, 09:32:26 am »

A U.S. naval warship armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles has arrived off the coast of Syria, and has reportedly been “harassed” by Russian aircraft.

USS Donald Cook, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, has taken up a position just off Syria’s territorial waters after leaving Cyprus, according to media reports. The ship reportedly has 60 Tomahawk cruise missiles—roughly the number used in the missile strike last year against Syria last year—in its onboard arsenal.

The Pentagon has confirmed those reports, but sources in the Defense Department said “more than one option for possible military action against Syria” has been drawn up. Those options are reportedly similar to those offered to President Donald Trump last year.

The president has canceled plans to attend the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, beginning Friday in order to oversee the upcoming military action, which is all but assured at this point. Following phone calls between their leaders and the president, the United Kingdom and France have both suggested they will join in the forthcoming military operation.

In response, Russia and the Bashar al-Assad regime have stepped up military flights in the skies over western Syria. Since arriving yesterday, USS Donald Cook has been “buzzed” at least four times by Russian aircraft.
