Illinois Town Rescinds 2nd Amendment
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:37:35 pm »

Citizens have been given 60 days to hand over their ‘assault weapons’ or become criminals.

For residents of Deerfield, Ill., the Second Amendment no longer exists.

Last week, the Deerfield Village Council adopted a measure that bans “assault weapons.” The vote was unanimous.

Residents who possess such firearms now have less than 60 days to hand them over or face fines of up to $1,000 per day per weapon. The law exempts current and former police.

Residents begged the council to not go forward with the ban, but those pleas were ignored. Mayor Harriet Rosenthal said they were swayed more by demands from local high school students.

Deerfield High School senior Ariella Kharasch said:

“This is our fight—This is our generation’s fight. We’re going to keep fighting and this is part of it. Change happens gradually step by step. The fight does not end at the borders of our village.”

While the ordinance still permits revolvers, small-caliber rifles, and even double-barreled shotguns, the hysteria surrounding “assault weapons” led to the ban. In justifying the ban, members of the council mentioned the church shooting last year in Sutherland Spring, Texas, which came to an end when the shooter was confronted by a neighbor who possessed a weapon the kind of weapon the city now bans.
