Shaken, Not Stirred: 5.3 Quake Strikes SoCal
« Reply #1 on: April 06, 2018, 09:20:12 am »

No injuries or significant damage was reported in the region.

Residents of Southern California were shaken, but not stirred Thursday afternoon following a magnitude-5.3 earthquake that struck offshore from the Channel Islands.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the “moderate” temblor struck at 12:29 p.m. local time (3:29 p.m. EDT) 41 miles southwest of Ventura, Calif.—85 miles west of Los Angeles—at a depth of 10 miles. It was the largest quake to strike the region in more than four years.

Locals reported feeling a “jolt” followed by “a rolling motion” that lasted only a few seconds. Some people in taller buildings said they were frightened by the swaying that occurred.

Although the shaking was felt up and down the coast of Southern California, there were no reports of damage or injuries as a result of the quake. According to local media reports, the most significant impact was the loosening of a couple bricks in a chimney at a nature conservancy on Santa Cruz Island.

As a precaution, the Los Angeles Fire Department went into its “earthquake mode,” but quickly reverted to normal operations after a survey of the city was completed. There were no evacuations or tsunami warnings.
