https://papersplease.org/wp/2018/11/02/what-china-calls-social-credit-the-us-calls-risk-assessment/
What China calls ?social credit?, the US calls ?risk assessment?

A viral video of an announcement on a Chinese high-speed train and a series of reports (here and here) on NPR have prompted a surge of interest this week in China?s ?social credit? system:

Dear passengers: People who travel without a ticket, behave disorderly, or smoke in public areas will be punished according to regulations, and the behavior will be recorded in individual credit information system. To avoid a negative record of personal credit, please follow the relevant regulations and help with the orders on the train and at the station.

Despite unwarranted comparisons to US financial credit scores, ?social credit? scoring in China is used by the government and para-statal entities, not just private companies, and not just for financial decision-making.

One of the NPR stories as well as a report last month by the Australian Broadcasting Co. include interviews with people who discovered they were barred by the Chinese government from travel on high-speed trains as a result of ?social credit? scores, regardless of their ability to pay for tickets.

Dystopian? Yes.

Unjust? Yes?

?It can?t happen here?? No.

It already happens here, every day, to everyone who travels by airline or engages in bank or credit card transactions.

You may not realize it until you are mysteriously unable to obtain a boarding pass or complete a financial transaction, but each of these activities is already subject to secret, permission-based, extrajudicial prior restraint by the US government.

The default is ?no?.  Since a little over 10 years ago, US Federal regulations have forbidden any airline from issuing a boarding pass unless and until it has sent the would-be traveler?s itinerary and identifying information to the DHS and has received back an individualized, per-passenger, per-flight, permission-to-travel message from the DHS. The DHS generates a secret ?risk score? for each passenger, which determines how closely they are searched and questioned, whether the airline is instructed to call the police when they try to check in, and other aspects of how they are treated.

Even before airlines or banks get to the point of consulting the government, ?carrier sanctions? and similar sanctions against financial institutions give them a financial incentive to err on the side of saying ?no?, not ?yes?.
...

What China calls ?social credit scoring?, the US calls ?risk-based screening?.

Government blacklists and real-time pre-crime policing are being applied to control a growing range of activities of daily life. But air travel and financial transactions are the areas where the US government already has a fully deployed and operational real-time ?social credit? system in which private service providers are seamlessly integrated with government agencies to surveil and control our everyday activities.

The question isn?t whether the US should have a ?social credit? system ? it already does ? but whether it should be expanded to more aspects of our lives, or rolled back.

According to Amazon's Alexa terms of use, the company collects and stores most of what you say to Alexa - including the geolocation of the product along with your voice instructions, reports CNBC's Todd Haselton.

Conservative Activist Laura Loomer Banned From Twitter After Criticizing Congresswoman-Elect Ilhan Omar
22 Nov 2018

Independent journalist Laura Loomer was banned from Twitter on Wednesday, following a tweet in which she accused Congresswoman-Elect Ilhan Omar of supporting Sharia law and female genital mutilation.

Loomer, who had amassed more than 260,000 followers on the Twitter, said that the social media platform had permanently suspended her account, informing her that she had violated Twitter?s rules against ?hateful conduct.?
...
?Isn?t it ironic how the twitter moment used to celebrate ?women, LGBTQ, and minorities? is a picture of Ilhan Omar?? began Loomer in her tweet, ?Ilhan is pro Sharia Ilhan is pro- FGM Under Sharia, homosexuals are oppressed & killed. Women are abused & forced to wear the hijab. Ilhan is anti Jewish.?

This wasn?t Loomer?s first incident with Twitter. In November 2017, the platform removed Loomer?s blue verification badge amid the removal of badges belonging to several other accounts deemed overtly offensive by Twitter.

Last month, Twitter had also suspended Loomer?s account for six days. It was not made clear as to what specifically prompted the temporary suspension, as Loomer stated that she was never given an explanation.

On Thursday, Facebook followed suit by suspending Loomer?s account features on its platform as well, according to Campbell.

EXCLUSIVE: Google Employees Debated Burying Conservative Media In Search Results
11/29/2018

Google employees debated whether to bury The Daily Caller and other conservative media outlets in search results as a response to President Donald Trump?s election
?Let?s make sure that we reverse things in four years,? one engineer wrote in a thread that included a Google vice president
Google employees similarly sought to manipulate search results to combat Trump?s travel ban

Google employees debated whether to bury conservative media outlets in search results as a response to President Donald Trump?s election in 2016, internal Google communications obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation reveal.

The Daily Caller and Breitbart were specifically singled out as outlets to potentially bury in search results, the communications reveal.

Trump?s election in 2016 shocked many Google employees, who had been counting on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to win.

'F--- you leakers': A former senior Google employee says a frantic quest to stop internal info getting out is now management's 'number one priority'

Jack Poulson, who quit Google in September over its search project in China, spoke about the company's culture of secrecy.
He said managers are more concerned with stopping leaks than anything else.
Poulson cited an engineer yelling "f--- you leakers" at an all-hands meeting as an example of the attitude to leaking.
Court documents and concerned employees have previously given a picture of the extreme lengths to which Google goes to protect its secrets.

A senior former Google employee who quit over its controversial plans to launch a search engine in China painted a picture of a company whose upper echelons are obsessed with stopping leaks, to the exclusion of almost anything else.

Jack Poulson, a former researcher at the company, said that senior managers consider the prevention of leaks to be their "number one priority."

Apple Will Build $1 Billion Campus in Austin, Adding 5,000 Jobs

Apple plans to build a 133-acre campus in Austin, Texas, that will cost $1 billion and employ 5,000 new workers, the company announced Thursday. The company says the move is expected to make it the largest private employer in Austin.

Apple already employs more people in that city, some 6,200 workers, than it does in any other city outside of its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The company now plans to add substantially to that figure.

Its current main site in Austin is an office park roughly 12 miles north of downtown. The new campus will also be in North Austin, less than a mile from the current facilities. And it will have room to grow to 15,000 workers, the company says.

"Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin," CEO Tim Cook, said in a news release about the plan.

Internal records show that the social network had arrangements with Microsoft, Amazon and others, effectively exempting some partners from its usual privacy rules. The documents underscore how personal data has become the digital age?s prized commodity.

For years, Facebook gave some of the world?s largest technology companies more intrusive access to users? personal data than it has disclosed, effectively exempting those business partners from its usual privacy rules, according to internal records and interviews.

The special arrangements are detailed in hundreds of pages of Facebook documents obtained by The New York Times. The records, generated in 2017 by the company?s internal system for tracking partnerships, provide the most complete picture yet of the social network?s data-sharing practices. They also underscore how personal data has become the most prized commodity of the digital age, traded on a vast scale by some of the most powerful companies in Silicon Valley and beyond.

Facebook Data Breach -- What To Do Next

Yesterday, Facebook notified users of a massive data breach affecting over 50 million people. The breach had taken place three days earlier, on the afternoon of 25 September.

The social media giant says it doesn?t know exactly what kind of information has been compromised. However, in an updated statement yesterday, it did admit the hack affected those who use Facebook to log into other accounts.

How do you know if you?ve been impacted?

If you?ve been affected by the breach, Facebook logged you out of your account yesterday. The social network said it would also notify these people in a message on top of their News Feed about what happened.
...
Has the issue been fixed?

According to Facebook, yes. It believes it has fixed the security vulnerability, which enabled hackers to exploit a weakness in Facebook?s code to access the ?View As? privacy tool that allows users to see how their profile looks to other people.

Samsung Phone Users Perturbed to Find They Can't Delete Facebook
By Sarah Frier
January 8, 2019, 10:55 AM PST

Galaxy owners take to Twitter to complain about permanent app
Pre-install deals are common, but privacy concerns are rising
...
Winke bought his Samsung Galaxy S8, an Android-based device that comes with Facebook?s social network already installed, when it was introduced in 2017. He has used the Facebook app to connect with old friends and to share pictures of natural landscapes and his Siamese cat -- but he didn?t want to be stuck with it. He tried to remove the program from his phone, but the chatter proved true -- it was undeletable. He found only an option to "disable," and he wasn?t sure what that meant.
...
A Facebook spokesperson said the disabled version of the app acts like it?s been deleted, so it doesn?t continue collecting data or sending information back to Facebook.
...
The Menlo Park, California-based company said whether the app is deletable or not depends on various pre-install deals Facebook has made with phone manufacturers, operating systems and mobile operators around the world over the years, including Samsung. Facebook, the world?s largest social network, wouldn?t disclose the financial nature of the agreements, but said they?re meant to give the consumer "the best" phone experience right after opening the box.
...

onsumer-advocacy groups have been skeptical of such arrangements for years, according to Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy.

?It?s only recently that people have become to understand that these apps really power the spy in your pocket,? he said.
?Companies should be filing public documents on these deals, and Facebook should turn over public documents that show there is no data collection when the app is disabled.?

Facebook isn?t the only company whose apps show up on smartphones by default. A T-Mobile US Inc. list of apps built into its version of the Samsung Galaxy S9, for example, includes the social network as well as Amazon.com Inc. The phone also comes loaded with many Google apps such as YouTube, Google Play Music and Gmail; Google is the creator of the Android software that powers the phone. Other phone makers and service providers, including LG Electronics Inc., Sony Corp., Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc., have made similar deals with app makers. When Twitter?s app is loaded on a new phone by default, it wouldn?t collect any data unless a user had an account or created a new one, and opened the app and logged in, the company said.

Is Big Tech Merging With Big Brother? Kinda Looks Like It

...
China?s social rating system, which was announced by the ruling Communist Party in 2014, will soon be a fact of life for many more Chinese.

By 2020, if the Party?s plan holds, every footstep, keystroke, like, dislike, social media contact, and posting tracked by the state will affect one?s social rating.

...

Big Brother is an emerging reality in China. Yet in the West, at least, the threat of government surveillance systems being integrated with the existing corporate surveillance capacities of big-data companies like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon into one gigantic all-seeing eye appears to trouble very few people?even as countries like Venezuela have been quick to copy the Chinese model.

Still, it can?t happen here, right? We are iPhone owners and Amazon Prime members, not vassals of a one-party state. We are canny consumers who know that Facebook is tracking our interactions and Google is selling us stuff.

Yet it seems to me there is little reason to imagine that the people who run large technology companies have any vested interest in allowing pre-digital folkways to interfere with their 21st-century engineering and business models, any more than 19th-century robber barons showed any particular regard for laws or people that got in the way of their railroads and steel trusts.

Nor is there much reason to imagine that the technologists who run our giant consumer-data monopolies have any better idea of the future they're building than the rest of us do.

Facebook, Google, and other big-data monopolists already hoover up behavioral markers and cues on a scale and with a frequency that few of us understand. They then analyze, package, and sell that data to their partners.

A glimpse into the inner workings of the global trade in personal data was provided in early December in a 250-page report released by a British parliamentary committee that included hundreds of emails between high-level Facebook executives. Among other things, it showed how the company engineered sneaky ways to obtain continually updated SMS and call data from Android phones. In response, Facebook claimed that users must "opt-in" for the company to gain access to their texts and calls.

 Executive Summary

On paper, Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) is one of the most successful companies in history.

https://www.plainsite.org/realitycheck/fb.pdf
...

Facebook has been lying to the public about the scale of its problem with fake accounts, which likely exceed 50% of its network. Its official metrics?many of which it has stopped reporting quarterly?are self-contradictory and even farcical. The company has lost control of its own product.

Fake accounts affect Facebook at its core in numerous ways:

Its customers purchase advertising on Facebook based on the fact that it can supposedly target advertisements at more than 2 billion real human beings. To the extent that users aren?t real, companies are throwing their money down the drain.

Fake accounts click on advertising at random, or "like" pages, to throw off anti-fraud algorithms. Fake accounts look real if they do not follow a clear pattern. This kind of activity defrauds advertisers, but rewards Facebook with revenue.

Fake accounts often defraud other users on Facebook, through scams, fake news, extortion, and other forms of deception. Often, they can involve governments.

Preaching that programmers should "move fast and break things," CEO Mark Zuckerberg has clarified over time that growth at any cost is his only priority. But documents recently revealed show that since 2012, management has worried about where it can find more warm bodies to sign on. Fake accounts have been keeping the company that Columbia professor Tim Wu has called an "attention merchant" afloat.

Geologist Accuses Apple of Political Bias in Removing App Countering Climate Alarmism
Kevin Mooney / @KevinMooneyDC / March 11, 2019

The app, called Inconvenient Facts, is available only to Android users through the Google Play Store. Since March 4, users of Apple?s iPhone no longer can access the app through the tech giant?s App Store.

Why is that?

Gregory Wrightstone, a geologist with more than three decades of experience, told The Daily Signal in an interview that he has his own opinion about what may have transpired inside Apple.

Wrightstone is the author of a book ?Inconvenient Facts: The Science That Al Gore Doesn?t Want You to Know,? which served as the basis for the information available from the app.

He notes that former Vice President Al Gore, a leading proponent of the view that mankind?s activities propel dangerous climate change, is a board member of Apple.

?It?s very rare for an app to be approved and then taken down unless there is offensive material or some other extreme issue,? Wrightstone said of Apple?s action in a phone interview with The Daily Signal, adding:

We thought at first it may have been our fault. But I did a search on climate change and global warming in the Apple App Store and pulled up a whole bevy of pro-man-made global warming apps that are really bad. They are not formatted, they have incorrect spellings and no links.

But I suppose they have the political narrative right. Compared to these, our app is the gold standard. I made sure we had charts and links and references to the source for our data. This is all right in the palm of your hand.

A total of 60 facts in Wrightstone?s book are available through the Inconvenient Facts app to Android users. Complete with data, charts, and videos, they challenge the premise of alarmist theories about climate change that link man-made emissions to dangerous levels of global warming.

Gore?s ongoing campaign to convince the public that rising levels of carbon dioxide emissions could trigger catastrophic global warming was the subject of the 2006 documentary ?An Inconvenient Truth? and the 2017 follow-up, ?An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.?

Facebook Bans White Nationalism And Separatism Content From Its Platforms

March 27, 2019 4:33 PM ET

Facebook announced Wednesday that it intends to ban content that glorifies white nationalism and separatism, a major policy shift that will begin next week.

"It's clear that these concepts are deeply linked to organized hate groups and have no place on our services," the company said in a statement.

Facebook had already banned white supremacy but it left a loophole which civil rights groups said promoted racism and hate. The company said it had allowed expressions of white nationalism and separatism "because we were thinking about broader concepts of nationalism and separatism ? things like American pride."

But that thinking changed after discussions with civil society groups and race relations experts over the last three months, the company says.

Facebook says next week users who search for terms related to white supremacy will be directed to Life After Hate, a Chicago-based organization founded by former extremists who strive to help people "leave the violent far-right."

Opinion Mark Zuckerberg?s Carefully Curated Jewish Conscience Is Both Shallow and Evasive

Mark Zuckerberg's bland Jewish allusions don?t substitute for taking a real moral stand on Facebook's raw power to channel incitement, hate and electoral espionage

Still only 33, Zuckerberg, his life and motives, has already been subjected to the sort of scrutiny usually reserved for heads of state. Profiles, biographies, a full-length feature documentary, and more. And of course there have been those obsessed with his Jewishness and spiritual trajectory. Google "Mark Zuckerberg" and "Jewish" and you will find everything from dissections of his romantic choices and philanthropic history from a Jewish perspective, to feverish conspiracies of how Facebook is a Jewish plot to brainwash the entire planet.
