"SEC May Want To Take A Look": Facebook Insiders Dumped $4.1 Billion In Stock Since Scandal

For all the mockery he is subjected to on a regular basis, both here and elsewhere, Dennis Gartman issued a very prescient and timely warning ahead of Facebook's earnings. As we noted yesterday in our note why Gartman thinks that this is a "This Is A Dangerous Time", the (formerly) regular CNBC guest pointed out the following troubling fact:

... note the chart this page, courtesy of RBMP Capital, of the huge and increasing sales of Facebook by its founder, Mr.  Mark Zuckerberg, over the course of the past several years and most notably over the course of the past several months. When owners sell this aggressively? no matter what the excuse they might give?only the foolhardy do not pay heed.

Facebook lost as much as $124 billion in market cap today
Loss greater than previous one-day plunges at Intel, Apple

Facebook Inc. has racked up plenty of milestones in its pioneering journey. Now the social-media giant has added another one that it would have rather avoided: the biggest stock-market wipeout in American history.

Shares tumbled as much as 20 percent in New York on Thursday as sales and user growth disappointed investors. This translates to a $124 billion decline in market capitalization, which is the largest ever loss of value in one day for a U.S. traded company.

EXCLUSIVE: Twitter Shadowbanning ?Real and Happening Every Day? Says Inside Source
Milo
16 Feb 2016

Rumours that Twitter has begun ?shadowbanning? politically inconvenient users have been confirmed by a source inside the company, who spoke exclusively to Breitbart Tech. His claim was corroborated by a senior editor at a major publisher.

According to the source, Twitter maintains a ?whitelist? of favoured Twitter accounts and a ?blacklist? of unfavoured accounts. Accounts on the whitelist are prioritised in search results, even if they?re not the most popular among users. Meanwhile, accounts on the blacklist have their posts hidden from both search results and other users? timelines.

Twitter: Of course we don?t shadow ban (okay, maybe a little)

John SextonPosted at 1:21 pm on July 27, 2018

Does Twitter shadow ban users? Definitely not, says Twitter. Do they do something that sounds like a less extreme form of shadow banning? Well, you can be the judge on that. Here?s what Twitter wrote Thursday in a blog post [emphasis added]:

...

We do not shadow ban. You are always able to see the tweets from accounts you follow (although you may have to do more work to find them, like go directly to their profile). And we certainly don?t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.

Credit to Cuffy who highlighted that parenthetical above
. So, if you don?t do that extra work, you won?t see tweets from some people you follow? Are the people on the extra-work-protocol informed about their status? Are their tweets also downgraded in search results? Are the people following them aware that extra work is required to see their tweets?
...

I can say that this accords with my own experience on Twitter. There are dozens (maybe hundreds?) of progressives who have blocked me, not because I?ve ever had an interaction with them but because a few years ago someone on the left was sending around block lists and I was included on those lists, along with a lot of other people they?d never interacted with. For many on the left, if you?re on the right you?re a ?bad-faith actor? by definition.

Twitter Stock Drops After User Numbers Decline
By Nellie Bowles and Prashant S. Rao
   July 27, 2018

Twitter reported a decline in monthly active users on Friday, another sign of trouble for President Trump?s favored social network, which has struggled in recent months to tackle accusations of political bias and eliminate vast numbers of fake accounts.

The company, which had appeared to be undergoing a surprising resurgence, said it generated $711 million in revenue in its most recent quarter. That was 2 percent above the expectations of analysts, and about 24 percent more than the same period a year ago.

But those figures were overshadowed by Twitter?s announcement that its monthly active users had fallen to 335 million in the second quarter, one million fewer than in the previous three-month period.

The results drove Twitter?s stock down 12 percent in premarket trading, one day after investors dumped Facebook shares after the company?s disappointing quarterly earnings.

Google Search Manipulation Can Swing Nearly 80 Percent of Undecided Voters: Report
By Geller Report Staff - on April 25, 2018

A new study conducted by a team of researchers at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology shows Google can actually manipulate the large majority of voters by returning negative search results.
A new study shows just how influential Google?s anti-conservative bias can be come election time.

Basically, all Google censors have to do is affix a negative suggestion to a candidate?s name ? and a positive to another chosen candidate?s name.

The findings are significant because they put numbers and evidence to what conservatives have long known ? that the liberal-leaning anti-Republican, anti-conservative, anti-Donald Trumpers in social media are on an all-courts-press to stifle voices that counter their progressive goals.

From Breitbart:

By inserting negative search suggestions under the name of a candidate, search engines like Google can shift the opinions of undecided voters by up to 43.4 percent, according to new research by a team at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology and reported exclusively by Breitbart News.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Robert Epstein, has previously conducted research into what he calls the Search Engine Manipulation Effect (SEME). This research showed that the manipulation of results pages in search engines can shift the voting preferences of undecideds by anywhere between 20 and 80 percent, depending on the demographic.

His latest research looks at how search engines can affect voters by suggesting negative or positive search terms when a political candidate?s name is entered into the search bar. Dr. Epstein?s research found that when negative search terms are suggested for a candidate, it can have a dramatic effect on voter opinion.

Disney Ride Still Makes Light of Sex Slavery
October 22, 2010 by Caroline Heldman | 32 Comments

As many as 4 million people?most of them women and children?are sold into slavery globally each year, according to the United Nations, and 70 percent of those women are trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation [PDF]. An estimated 200,000 American children are at risk for sex trafficking each year, and the International Human Rights Law Institute estimates that 30,000 sexual slaves die annually from abuse, torture, neglect and disease.

So why is Disneyland still asking us to laugh at an overt depiction of sexual slavery in its popular Pirates of the Caribbean ride?

Online retail giant Amazon makes its staff work under "unbelievable" pressure in "slave camp" conditions, with employees at their warehouses having to walk 11 miles in a shift and collect orders every 33 seconds, an investigation has found.

The shocking revelations came as part of a BBC investigation into working conditions at Amazon warehouses, which found that level of pressure staff are put under could cause "mental and physical illness". One warehouse employee told the BBC that conditions were comparable to a "slave camp".

Stress expert Professor Michael Marmot said Amazon staff were suffering "all the bad stuff at once", adding: "The characteristics of this type of job, the evidence shows increased risk of mental illness and physical illness."

Amazon are the worse people I have ever work with, I sent nearly 5,000 items to be sold and 2 months they raise the storage fees without notice so high it was impractical to keep them, they offer to liquid, or remove (destroy) or ship back for free (supposedly but never notified you of the offer) and you never learn of the offer until it was expired.
Then when you call them on it, they ignore or send constant work on your case and never do anything, and run you around so long until they come up with something new, like deactivate your account and then destroy (so they say) you inventory because your product isn't selling a certain amount, in the mean time other seller are selling your product.....holy crap you can't make this stuff up.
So in total we loss around $100,000.00 dollars, our CPA says we can only write off the cost of make the product which is maybe $15,000
They are the devil and I am sure their employees are not getting treated the best either.

Shrimp sold at Walmart, Costco tied to slave labor
 By Aimee Picchi MoneyWatch
June 11, 2014, 1:07 PM

Shrimp is a summertime delicacy, but some consumers may lose their appetites after learning that shrimp sold at top retailers such as Walmart (WMT) and Costco (COST) is tied to slave labor.

Men are pressed into service and "bought and sold like animals" in the shrimping industry off the coast of Thailand, according to a six-month investigation by The Guardian, published on Tuesday.

The investigation found that slave labor is producing a basic yet essential part of the shrimp industry. Slaves -- who are reportedly beaten, chained, tortured and sometimes killed by their captors -- are forced to haul up huge "trash fish" harvests. According to the report, those fish are then ground to fishmeal and sold to CP Foods, a giant Thai food conglomerate which uses the meal to feed its farmed shrimp. Those shrimp are sold to Walmart, Costco and U.K. retailers such as Tesco, the Guardian found.

Walmart said that it's taking action in response to the revelations.

"We are actively engaged in this issue.

Investigation Reveals That Walmart and Lowe's Have Direct Links to Slave Labor
Logging camps in Brazil are committing one of the worst crimes of humanity.
 By Andr? Campos / AlterNet
May 17, 2017

This story is the third in a four-part series on slave labor practices at logging camps in Par?, Brazil, produced by Rep?rter Brasil. Read the first, second and fourth parts on Mongabay.

Products derived from timber extracted by workers living in conditions analogous to slave labor in Brazil are connected to a complex business network linked to the U.S. market?possibly reaching the shelves of large retailers and being used in renovation of landmarks ?according to a new investigation conducted by Brazilian news outlet Rep?rter Brasil. After purchasing from suppliers held liable for that crime by the Brazilian government, local traders exported timber to companies like USFloors, which supplies the retail chain Lowe?s, as well as Timber Holdings, which supplied timber for construction projects at Central Park and Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
...
Tramontina and Walmart

Another supply chain investigated by Rep?rter Brasil revealed links between slave labor exploitation and Tramontina, one of the largest manufacturers of kitchen utensils in Brazil. The group?s products are sold to the nation?s top retailers, including Brazilian Walmart stores.

The case begins with Madeireira Iller, a company held liable for using practices analogous to slave labor in December 2012. The Brazilian Ministry of Labor rescued 31 people who worked in the processing, cutting and transportation of native wood for the company, in the city of Santar?m, Par?.

Workers were living in similar conditions as those in the Bonardi case and most other cases linked to slave labor in the industry: tarp or straw shacks with no walls, meals prepared below minimum hygiene standards, no toilet, and water taken from the local stream.

In West Virginia, the people of McDowell County can?t get jobs, and recently lost their biggest employer ? the local Walmart store. They describe the devastating loss of jobs, community and access to fresh food

When Walmart left town, it didn?t linger over the goodbyes. It slashed the prices on all its products, stripped the shelves bare, and vanished, leaving behind only the ghostly shadow of its famous brand name and gold star logo on the front wall of a deserted shell.

The departure was so quick that telltale signs remain of the getaway, like smoldering ashes in the fireplaces of an evacuated town. Notices still taped to the glass entranceway record with tombstone-like precision the exact moment that the supercenter was shuttered: ?Store closed at 7pm, Thursday 28 January 2016.?

Ten years. That?s all the time it took for the store to rise up in a clearing of the lush forest of West Virginia?s coal country and then disappear again, as though it had never been there.

...
Much has been written about what happens when the corporate giant opens up in an area, with numerous studies recording how it sucks the energy out of a locality, overpowering the competition through sheer scale and forcing the closure of mom-and-pop stores for up to 20 miles around. A more pressing, and much less-well-understood, question is what are the consequences when Walmart screeches into reverse: when it ups and quits, leaving behind a trail of lost jobs and broken promises.
...

?They screwed us real hard by leaving us like that,? he says, reflecting on the various ways his life has changed. ?It?s so sad they thought they could just walk away.?

There used to be 28 churches of her United Methodist denomination in the county, now there are six; there were seven bars in Welch, all but one have closed; there were three cinemas, now it?s down to one; there are no community centers left; many of the corner shops have gone. ?There?s nothing here,? McKinney says.

McKinney has one other, rather astonishing, reason to regret that the store closed. Walking.

Walking?

?I went to Walmart for the walk,? she says. ?I went early and I got a cart and I walked all over the store. I loved walking around it. I would walk and talk, talk and walk. I could walk the store all day.?

That?s a statement that will reverberate far beyond the boundaries of McDowell County, or West Virginia. It could be applied to small towns and rural areas right across the US. This is the statement of communities that have had the communal bled out of them.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

Many forms of slavery, we all are slave to the system, try to run away and they will hunt you down and then you'll be really miserable.
We're all on the reservation now!

Twitter hires "experts in Islam" and "right-wing populism" to banish "intolerant discourse"
Jul 31, 2018 8:01 am By Robert Spencer

?Twitter hires experts in Islam and right-wing populism to banish ?intolerant discourse,?? by Jasper Hamill, Metro, July 30, 2018:

https://metro.co.uk/2018/07/30/twitter-hires-experts-islam-right-wing-populism-banish-intolerant-discourse-7776851/

Twitter has launched a new scheme to clamp down on "abuse, harassment and other types of behaviours that can detract or distort from the public conversation".

It has selected two teams of academics to begin a project aimed at silencing the wrong type of speech on the social network.

The researchers have expertise in a wide range of subject areas including Islam, diversity and the spread of right-wing populism.

They will work to measure the effect of echo chambers and hate speech on Twitter, with the data used to guide the tech giant?s future strategy.
...
Dr. Rebekah Tromble, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Leiden University, is leader of a scheme called ?examining echo chambers and uncivil discourse?.

She has a PhD in political science with a minor in ?transnational Islam? and wrote her dissertation called: ?Who Framed the Prophet? Media, Stakeholders, and the Debate over the Danish Cartoon Controversy.?
...
It will also attempt to develop algorithms which hunt out ?intolerant discourse? and automatically recognise hate speech, racism or xenophobia.

Ride-Hailing Drivers Are Slaves to the Surge
By Masha Goncharova
 Jan. 12, 2017

Every weekday at 5:30 a.m., Uziel Santos, 48, leaves for work. Like most drivers for ride-hailing apps in New York, he is drawn by early-morning surge prices, and those closest to his home in Astoria, Queens, are on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where children and parents book short, lucrative rides to school and work.

He simultaneously signs on to Uber, Lyft and Juno, three of the most prominent ride-hailing apps currently operating in the city, to determine the highest-paying fares in town that day.

Having already memorized the promotions that various apps announce at the beginning of each week, Mr. Santos quickly scans for daily or even hourly surges and determines which app has the most profitable deal. Uber would bring him nearly twice the fare that a yellow cab would charge on a recent morning.
....
Mr. Santos became the sole earner for his family of four when he began driving for Uber two years ago. Uber Technologies Inc. arrived in the city in 2011, promising drivers flexible scheduling and high wages, intending to disrupt ?the most sophisticated and complicated transportation market out there.?

...

For some longtime cabbies like Domingo Batista, who has been driving a yellow taxi in Manhattan for 20 years, Uber did not seem like a big deal at first. But surge pricing ?changed everything,? he said, pointing to his fare meter.

?In the cab, that number?s not going up; Uber can surcharge what they want,? he said, adding, ?Yes, it?s very unfair.?
...
In New York, Uber drivers earn $25 to $30 an hour on average (twice that of cabdrivers and $5 to $10 more on average than Uber drivers earn in other American cities). But there is a downside to being your own boss: To turn a profit, drivers must plan their schedules around early-morning and late-night surges and invest as much as half of their earnings into insurance and car maintenance.

An even bleaker future is on the horizon: The Uber driver may ultimately be replaced by driverless cars. (Uber?s first self-driving test took place in Pittsburgh in September.)
...

Homeless, assaulted, broke: drivers left behind as Uber promises change at the top

Dante, 28, drives for Uber. Due to mounting costs of his car rental and insurance, he lives out of his vehicle.

...
The embattled company had hit the reset button, without its controversial CEO, it would, Huffington declared, be ?a new Uber?. It lasted all of six minutes and 45 seconds, when another board member, venture capitalist David Bonderman, interjected with a sexist joke, saying that more women on the board means ?it?s much more likely to be more talking?.

Within a few hours, Bonderman had resigned,
the latest in a seemingly never-ending stream of company leaders and senior executives who have either been forced out or, more often, simply abandoned ship.
...
Around the time Uber?s San Francisco staff was informed that their chief executive was taking an indefinite break from his company, Dante was waking up in his car on a quiet street not far from downtown Los Angeles. The 28-year-old rolled up his sleeping bag, put it in the trunk with his pillow and drove off to get breakfast before picking up his first Uber passenger.

Dante, who lives out of the car, knew little about the turmoil in the upper echelons of his employer, 350 miles away in northern California. ?It is what it is,? he said. ?I don?t really expect anything else from them.? He added: ?It would be nice to make more money.?
...

Classified as contractors, the drivers have little recourse to deal with a litany of workplace challenges and hazards, including wage cuts by the company, harassment and sexual assault by passengers and a rating system that some say is plagued by racial biases. It is well-known that Uber has done battle with labor organising efforts and traditional taxi regulations in markets across the world.

What is only now starting to become more apparent, however, is how Uber?s aggressive global expansion and alleged neglect of its workforce has left at least some of these workers with no option but to live in parking lots and on street corners. Including in LA, one of Uber?s most successful cities, and the place where Kalanick was born.

?I felt like an Uber slave?
...

?We?re just going to replace them with robots?

That may be because Uber does not see its drivers as its future. Part of the company?s sky-high valuation stems from an assumption by investors that Uber will do away with its human workforce, and the company has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in a bid to lead the race for self-driving car technology.

Even that effort has been mired in controversy, because Uber is locked in a costly lawsuit with Google?s parent corporation, Alphabet, which has accused Kalanick?s company of stealing its proprietary self-driving technology.

Uber recently fired the head of its autonomous car unit, Anthony Levandowski, an ex-Google engineer alleged to have stolen 14,000 internal documents from his ex-employer (In response to requests to hand over documents, Levandowski has invoked his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination.)

NY Times Investigation Confirms That Apple?s Factories In China Are Basically Slave Labor Camps

The day after Apple announced that it had doubled its profits last quarter on the strength of iPhone 4s sales, the New York Times has published a bombshell of a report on the conditions inside the Chinese factories that produce all the gadgets Apple fanatics crave, and it?s not pretty. In short, your iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc., are essentially being produced in slave labor camps.

...

Even more troubling is that Apple executives know about what goes on in the factories, but turns a blind eye to it because doing something about it would likely stem the tidal waves of cash that continue to roll in.
...

If I didn?t know any better I?d say that Apple appears to be pushing and pushing and pushing to see just how much they can get away with before a tipping point is reached and people become so genuinely disgusted that they flat-out refuse to buy Apple products any more.

How the iPhone Helps Perpetuate Modern-Day Slavery
By C. Robert Gibson

The iPhone 6 is coming out soon. But you don?t need one. Your lining up to buy Apple?s latest product is enabling their abuse of workers around the world, including in the United States. Of course, Apple isn?t the only one guilty of this. The HP laptop I?m using to write this article was made in the same way. As is the Samsung smartphone I used to tweet this article after it was published. But Apple is the most glaring example that our need for shiny new gadgets perpetuates atrocities.
...

As this mini-documentary from the Pulitzer Center shows, children as young as 13 are forced to work in the mines for as little as 2 dollars a day. They wear no safety protection, carry a store-bought, battery-powered flashlight, and often die from brutal working conditions that result in suffocation, cave-ins, and death from sheer exhaustion. Multinational corporations like Apple, Samsung, Dell, and HP all depend on the Congolese mining operations for their raw materials, as 80 percent of the world?s coltan supply comes from the region. The children have no other option but to work in the mines, because school is beyond the financial means of ordinary Congolese families.

The raw materials mined in Congo are then sent to factories in China ? most notably, the Foxconn plant in Shenzhen. The factory has been described by local media as a ?labor camp,? in which teenage students are sought out for employment and are forced to work more than double or even triple the overtime limit (36 hours a month under China?s labor laws), and workers are routinely uncompensated for injuries suffered on the job. Seventeen workers attempted suicide, and 14 died jumping from the roof of the building in 2010. The company responded by putting anti-suicide nets around the building, and forced employees to sign agreements stating that their employer would be exempt from lawsuits brought by family members in the event of their suicide. Foxconn claims to have raised workers? wages to $298 per month, but workers say those pay raises never came.

After the raw materials for phones and computers are mined by underpaid and overworked Congolese teenagers, and those materials are assembled by underpaid and overworked Chinese teenagers, American teenagers and adults making poverty wages are then put to work in Apple stores hawking the new phones and computers. This is not unlike the triangular slave trade of the 18th century, in which African slaves were traded to America, American sugar and tobacco was traded to Europe, and European textiles, rum, and manufactured goods were traded to Africa. This time, the slaves are in Africa and Asia, and Americans are forced into wage slavery by an economy that encourages corporations to distribute profits upward to executives, while paying workers less and less.

Upcoming Pok?mon GO update will drop support for iPhone 5/5c and older iPads

Developer Niantic Labs said Tuesday that an upcoming update to its popular augmented reality game Pok?mon GO will remove existing support for devices like iPhone 5 and older iPads.

This change will take effect on February 28, 2018.

?After that date, trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pok?mon GO accounts from that device, or use their Pok?Coins or other items in their bags,? developers cautioned. To continue playing Pok?mon GO, you?ll need to switch to a supported device.

Pok?mon GO caused hundreds of deaths, increased crashes
Playing augmented reality while driving in the real world cost billions, say boffins
By Simon Sharwood 27 Nov 2017 at 07:59

Pok?mon GO killed at least two people and spiked rates of car accidents and injuries, according to a study of the game's impact on just one United States city.

?Death by Pok?mon GO? (PDF)  [  https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3073723 ], by a pair of researchers from Purdue University's Krannert School of Management, says the game caused ?a disproportionate increase in vehicular crashes and associated vehicular damage, personal injuries, and fatalities in the vicinity of locations, called Pok?Stops, where users can play the game while driving.?
...
The authors therefore compared crash locations to Pok?Stop locations, conducted ?difference-in-differences analysis that controls for a variety of possible confounding factors? and found ?that the increase in the number of crashes at locations in the proximity of Pok?Stops that can be attributed to the introduction of Pok?mon GO is 134 across the county over the 148 days that followed the introduction of the game.?

?This compares to a county-wide increase of 286 crashes during the same period,? the pair wrote. ?Thus, the increase in crashes attributable to the introduction of Pok?mon GO accounts for 47% of the increase in the total number of county-wide crashes.?

It gets worse: "Based on the assessments of damage in the police reports, the increase in the number of crashes in the vicinity of Pok?Stops results in $498,567 of incremental vehicular damage, or 22% of the increase in the total dollar amount of vehicular damage experienced county-wide over the 148 days following the introduction of the game.?

...
The paper extrapolated what that might mean nationwide and concluded ?the increase in crashes attributable to the introduction of Pok?mon GO is 145,632 with an associated increase in the number of injuries of 29,370 and an associated increase in the number of fatalities of 256 over the period of July 6, 2016, through November 30, 2016.? The authors valued those crashes and fatalities at between $2bn and $7.3 billion for the same period.

The paper also noted that the incidence of road accidents has increased, reversing a long downward trend, since the advent of the smartphone, but stopped short of recommending further regulation of phone use in cars because previous laws or education campaigns aimed at reducing use of mobile devices in cars have not been successful.

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

YouTube's Top Creators Are Burning Out and Breaking Down En Masse (polygon.com)

Polygon reports of several prominent YouTube creators who are struggling with burnout. The cause can be attributed to "constant changes to the platform's algorithm, unhealthy obsessions with remaining relevant in a rapidly growing field and social media pressures [that] are making it almost impossible for top creators to continue creating at the pace both the platform and audience want," reports Polygon.

 From the report:

Three weeks ago, Bobby Burns, a YouTuber with just under one million subscribers, sat down on a rock in Central Park to talk about a recent mental health episode.

One week ago, Elle Mills, a creator with more than 1.2 million subscribers, uploaded a video that included vulnerable footage during a breakdown.

Six days ago, Ruben "El Rubius" Gundersen, the third most popular YouTuber in the world with just under 30 million subscribers, turned on his camera to talk to his viewers about the fear of an impending breakdown and his decision to take a break from YouTube.

Burns, Mills and Gundersen aren't alone. Erik "M3RKMUS1C" Phillips (four million subscribers), Benjamin "Crainer" Vestergaard (2.7 million subscribers) and other top YouTubers have either announced brief hiatuses from the platform, or discussed their own struggles with burnout, in the past month. Everyone from PewDiePie (62 million subscribers) to Jake Paul (15.2 million subscribers) have dealt with burnout. Lately, however, it seems like more of YouTube's top creators are coming forward with their mental health problems.

In closing, Polygon's Julia Alexander writes: "YouTube offers no clear support system for creators, nor is it clear if the company has offered professional help to some of its top creators who've made their burnout public. Instead, YouTube's only direct reaction is a playlist dedicated to burnout and mental health. The creators are essentially working until they no longer physically can, and apologizing to their fans after believing they've failed. Polygon has reached out to YouTube for more information about services that are provided to creators. The only way to beat burnout is to take breaks. Unfortunately, for many YouTubers, those breaks are rarely planned."

Rage Over Social-Media 'Censorship' Spurred YouTube Shooting Spree
Elizabeth Nolan Brown|
Apr. 4, 2018 9:30 am

Woman who opened fire at YouTube was mad over video demonetization. A 39-year-old woman opened fire at YouTube's San Bruno, California, headquarters Tuesday, shooting three people (nonfatally) before killing herself. The shooter, Nasim Aghdam, was apparently enraged by YouTube's decision to demonetize her video channels. In the steady stream of widely publicized shootings in this country, this one stands out for several reasons.

It's exceptionally rare for public shootings like this to be carried out by women. According to a Mother Jones analysis of incidents that meet the criteria to be called "mass shootings"?73 in total since 1982?only three of the perpetrators were women. And a New York Police Department analysis found that between 1966 and 2012, just eight of 230 "active shooter" cases involved female shooters.

This is the first mass shooting publicly motivated by social-media company policies. We're used to shooters being animated by things like bigotry, misogyny, anti-government sentiment, religion, fringe politics or beliefs, or perhaps no discernible reason at all. In this case, Aghdam said she "hated" YouTube because of its platform policies with regard to her videos. From Aghdam's purported website:

There is no free speech in real world & you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered & merely relegated, so that people can hardly see their videos! There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site, your channel will grow if they want to!!!!!

Aghdam was particularly insenced that her videos had been demonetized?that is, not eligible for ad-sharing profits from the platform. Videos may be demonetized if a creator has fewer than 1,000 subscribers or if YouTube deems their videos inappropriate. Aghdam's dad told NBC that YouTube "stopped everything and now she has no income."

This has been a major complaint among YouTube creators for a while, as it seems the company is increasingly clamping down on what kind of content it will favor or allow. As with "shadowbanning" on Twitter and Facebook's mysterious algorythms, YouTube's promotion (or lack thereof) and demonetization policies have been heralded as inscrutable, inconsistent, and biased.
