I've yet to see a bad review of this movie . Maybe this one:
http://www.racismreview.com/blog/2012/11/26/spielbergs-lincoln-movie-yet-more-white-saviors/

But this is a "racist" review so I'll discount that one. But that's the worse I've seen.
I have yet to see any criticism of Lincoln himself. Half a million dead and not one word of disgust as to what could have been said , what could have been done to stop the slaughter! Even then the situation was horrifying.
How about Empire's role?

The role of Britain in the war was notable more for what the country didn’t do. Her Majesty’s Government stayed as aloof as possible and attended to its own interests. Those interests didn’t always point in the same direction. London bankers were invested in the industrializing North, but the North was also seen as a competitor for export goods such as cotton from the South, which kept British textile mills humming. Both sides courted British help. Frustratingly, Foreman never gives us a tour d’horizon of the British press. We’re shown that the Times was pro-South, but we don’t learn much else. One might think the spectre of slavery would be the Union’s trump card in the contest for Britain’s sympathy (Prime Minister Palmerston viewed British abolition as one of the greatest moments in the country’s history), but the complex details of why the seemingly natural allies were not, is a big part of Foreman’s story. When it became clear the Civil War was unmistakably about slavery, British public opinion moved overwhelmingly to the Union side.

Britain’s involvement in the US Civil War
By Laura Lynch

A long forgotten and controversial part of Britain’s past is being unearthed by an American historian living in London. The World's Tom Sebrell has uncovered evidence of strong support for the southern Confederate states in the Civil War in America. Britain was officially neutral during the war. But Sebrell is now leading walking tours of London that reveal untold stories of Britain’s role. Laura Lynch decided to take the tour for herself.

The Latest Nonsense from the Lincoln Cult
Posted by Thomas DiLorenzo on May 16, 2008 09:28 AM
...
So despite the Lincoln Cult's worshipping of the Declaration (well, actually, only the "all men are created equal" part), we are informed that governments don't derive their just powers from the consent of the governed after all.

One man, in this case Dishonest Abe, is able to invent a new and ahistorical theory about America (his "nationalist mythology"), and prove himself "right" by orchestrating the mass murder of some 350,000 dissenters to the new theory. This is what preserves "legitimate government."

This of course is not new. It's the tired, old lie that Lincoln himself invented and is kept alive by such propagandists for the American empire as Harry Jaffa and his merry band of Claremontistas.

Stalin must have loved this theory -- that "legitimate government" is derived from the mass murder of those who do not consent to being governed by Stalin. I suppose that's why communist sympathizers such as Lincoln Cultist Eric Foner of columbia University opposed the break-up of the Soviet Union.

In a Feb. 11, 1991 article in The Nation entitled "Lincoln's Lesson" Foner opposed the secession movements in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Georgia and urged Gorbachev to deal with them in the same brutal and barbaric manner that Lincoln dealt wiith his own citizens who didn't buy into his new theory of "nationalist man." Secession, said Foner, would destroy the "laudable goal" of "overreaching loyalty to the Soviet Union."

There are apparently no limits at all to the nonsense that Lincoln Cultists will come up with as they desperately try to invent more and more excuses for Lincoln's mass murdering of 350,000 of his own citizens.

The first Jewish President - Avraham Lincoln Avinu

Spielberg’s timely new Civil War biopic portrays a man leading his people to the gates of the Promised Land
By J. Hoberman|November 9, 2012 7:00 AM

“President Lincoln who was bearded, whose first name was Abraham, and who had freed the slaves [was], therefore, no doubt at all, a Jew, something the goyim would not concede, of course.” So riffed Yiddish poet J. L. Teller on behalf of his landslayt in his flavorsome memoir Strangers and Natives: The Evolution of the American Jews From 1921 to the Present.

And so it might seem in the newly released Lincoln, a movie directed and written by two of America’s most Jewish-American dramatic artists, Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner.

Lincoln’s Lincoln (played with animatronic gravitas by a looming, stooped, all but unrecognizable Daniel Day-Lewis) is not, of course, literally Jewish—any more than, as has also been wishfully suggested of Lincoln, a person of African descent or a closeted homosexual or a vampire-hunter or an E.T. born on the planet Krypton. What out-group would not wish to identify with America’s greatest and, in many respects its least likely, president?

...

As imagined by Spielberg and Kushner, Lincoln’s Lincoln is the ultimate mensch. He is a skilled natural psychologist, an interpreter of dreams, and a man blessed with an extraordinarily clever and subtle legal mind. A master storyteller who speaks in parables and employs slyly self-deprecating humor, he is a small “d” democrat glad to converse with anyone, willing to shoulder the solitary burden of historical tragedy, and, although capable of righteous wrath, ruled by compassion for all.

Lincoln itself is suffused with menschlichkheit. It opens, like Saving Private Ryan, with a visceral evocation of war: brutal hand-to-hand combat in the rain and mud. But this bit of Spielbergistic virtuosity aside, the movie is surprisingly unprepossessing, even humble. Shot by Spielberg regular Janusz Kaminski, the interior spaces are dark and cramped—although Lincoln seldom fails to radiate light. Day-Lewis’ delivery is anything but stentorian and appears to have taken its cadences from those of homespun humorist Will Rogers. Despite a two-hours-and-twenty-minute running time, the movie scarcely suffers from the inflation of previous Spielberg movies. The director’s style is unusually restrained—although he can’t entirely resist gilding the lily with reaction shots of wonder or composer John Williams’ mournful fanfares.

In the Great Melungeon Migration of the late 1700′s-early 1800′s, recognized Sephardic explorers such as Daniel Boone, John Sevier and others explored and purchased Kentucky and East Tennessee from the Native American tribes for the settlement of the Sephardic Jews. SIMMONS and  BRADFORD ancestors settled in Kentucky. My HOOD, CARTER, and HILL lines came from North Carolina to settle in Northern Georgia and later migrated to Kentucky. Mike’s BYEES migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and East Tennessee and later some went to Kentucky.
...

In the 1700′s there were also smaller communities of Melungeons and Sephardic Jews who gathered for a time in Upstate and Long Island New York before they moved further out on the frontier. Our BENSON, MESSENGER, VAIL, BARNEY, and BARBER lines were among these people. Our MESSENGER-BENSON family with a group of others including VAILS and BLANCHARDS in the early 1800′s, moved to the banks of the Ohio River on the Indiana side bordering Kentucky. Abraham Lincoln, a recognized Sephardic Melungeon,  his grandparents  settled in a Melungeon community in Kentucky, the same community as our BYBEE and  SIMMONS ancestors.

It is generally accepted by most Melungeons researchers that Lincoln's Melungeon ancestry comes through the linage of his mother, Nancy Hanks. He inherited a dark complexion, course, black hair, and grey eyes all of which is consistent with the physical features of the Melungeons. Judging from a  Picture of Nancy Hanks Lincoln (drawn by Lloyd Ostendorf), Lincoln does resemble his mother. Abraham Lincoln also inherited color blindness. One day he told his mother that he could not see things like other people.

The word Melungeon is a controversy in its self but the truth is finally emerging after centuries of silence by an oppressed people known as the Melungeons. Over the past two decades scholars such as archeologists, linguists, anthropologists, genealogist, historians and even scientists have taken on the task of piecing this unsolved Melungeon puzzle together. I know you are probably asking yourself, what on earth is a Melungeon? I've been there and asked that very same question too.

The Melungeon DNA Surname Project
The Melungeon DNA Surname Project by Dr. Elizabeth Hirschman and Dr. Donald Panther Yates state that Abraham Lincoln was of Jewish ancestry. Dr. Hirschman writes "The DNA sample we have came from a Berry male from Tennessee whose ancestors had arrived in Virginia. The marriage of Abraham Lincoln's parents was performed in the home of a Berry (and not a church) suggesting that not only the Lincolns, but also the Berry's were of Jewish descent. We believe that many of the very earliest settlers who came to North America from England were actually Sephardic Jews."

Example: Campbell and Alexander were founders of Tennessee:

http://melungeons.com/articles/melungeondnaproject.htm#Alexander
...

Alexander, Bruce, Campbell, Gordon, Douglas, Forbes, and Stewart:
The DNA scores representing these surnames are all for persons who can trace ancestry back to   these specific clans in Scotland. We sought these donors to test a very important hypothesis: In 1066 when William the Conqueror invaded England from Normandy, France he brought with him several Jewish families to assist him in setting up the civil administration of England.

Several of these families later migrated to Scotland at the invitation of the Scottish

kings (to serve as chamberlains, administrators, stewards, judges, educators, etc.). Based on our interpretation of the genealogies for the clans listed above and documentation that each of these families had originated in France (and were NOT Celtic), we gathered DNA samples.

We have confirmed that these DNA samples are from the Mediterranean (especially Spain- Iberia- Italy) and are therefore consistent with the hypothesis that these families were originally Sephardic Jews.

William Campbell (born 1745 and died on August 22,1781) was a Virginia farmer, pioneer, and soldier. One of the thirteen signers of the earliest statement of armed resistance to the British Crown in the American Colonies, the Fincastle Resolutions, Campbell represented Hanover County in the Virginia House of Delegates. A militia leader during the American Revolutionary War, he was known as the "bloody tyrant of Washington County" known for his leadership at the Battle of Kings Mountain and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

Since 2005, the Melungeon DNA Project has conducted DNA testing of identified Melungeon lines. It has made its results public, which have shown European mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for the female lines and both European and sub-Saharan African haplogroups in the Y-DNA of the male lines. Both females and males in several families that are traditionally identified as Melungeon and considered so by researchers have been tested. An April 2012 article on the Melungeons in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy summarized additional DNA testing of the last several years, together with historic evidence. The earliest depositions of Lumbee Indians (which were not taken until the late nineteenth century) make it clear that one important strain of founding families came to the swamplands of Robeson County from northeast North Carolina, just inland from the “Lost Colony.” Lumbee is an invented name, a back formation based on the place-names Lumberton and the Lumber River, the later not popularized until the rise of the lumber industry.

The oldest name is Lumberton, and I believe it was originally Lombard-town, though I have no way of proving this. The Jewish (and banking) district in metropolises like London and Philadelphia was invariably named Lombard Street because that is where “Lombard law” or mercantile law prevailed. “Lombard” and “Jewish merchant” were often synonymous.

You may have liked the movie, but now you have some truth to go along with that fantasy film. Most people prefer to know the truth rather than live with their head in the sand for sheer entertainment. ::)

This forum is about the truth, not for movie reviews.

750,000 military casualties

http://www.archaeology.org/news/page/87/

J. David Hacker of Binghamton University has completed a new statistical study of U.S. census records from 1850 to 1880. He suggests that 750,000 soldiers died in the Civil War, an estimated 20 percent higher than previous counts, which had been based upon battlefield reports, pension filings made by widows and orphans, and other faulty records. Many documents created by the Confederacy were destroyed when the Union Army captured Richmond, Virginia

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17604991
3 April 2012

Who, What, Why: How many soldiers died in the US Civil War?

A study suggests a previously widely accepted death toll of the US Civil War may actually be way under the mark. How many did perish in this conflict, fought before the era of modern record-keeping and DNA identification?
...
"The Civil War left a culture of death, a culture of mourning, beyond anything Americans had ever experienced or imagined," says David Blight, a Civil War historian at Yale University
...
For more than a century, it has been accepted with a grain of salt that about 620,000 Americans died in the conflict, with more than half of those dying off the battlefield from disease or festering wounds.
...
That was until December, when historian J David Hacker published a paper that used demographic methods and sophisticated statistical software to study newly digitised US census records from 1850 to 1880.

His finding: An estimated 750,000 soldiers died in the war - 21% higher than the 19th Century estimate.
...
He acknowledges further it cannot distinguish between Union and Confederate dead, between deaths on the battlefield or from illness, nor tally postwar deaths from wounds incurred in battle.

US Civil War deaths therefore could range from 617,877 to 851,066, and he settles on an estimate of 750,000 dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War
1861-65 - American Civil War: total deaths: ~625,000 - civilian deaths est 50,000-100,000 (disease and starvation)

Lincoln's Unconstitutional Suspension of Habeas Corpus - an analysis of an impeachable offense
 12/29/2002

I. The Suspension of Habeas Corpus:
Less than two months after assuming office as President, Abraham Lincoln wrote to General Winfield Scott in a letter unilaterally authorizing him to make arrests in the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus for reason of "public safety" in locations " between the City of Philadelphia and the City of Washington." On May 10, 1861 Lincoln extended this suspension to the state of Florida, again by unilateral proclamation as chief executive. On July 2nd, he again unilaterally extended suspension authority to the military "between the City of New York and the City of Washington." Additional suspensions of the writ were ordered unilaterally by Lincoln through the remainder of the war. The merits of Lincoln's unilateral suspension of habeas corpus have long been debated, but the act itself immediately raises another question of constitutionality. Though Lincoln acted to suspend the writ, nowhere in the United States Constitution does the president have this power and in fact it is given instead to Congress by any plain reading of the document. Lincoln denied this, asserting "Now it is insisted that Congress, and not the Executive, is vested with this power [suspension of habeas corpus]. But the Constitution itself, is silent as to which, or who, is to exercise the power." As any plain reading of the Constitution reveals, this claim is dubious.
...

CONCLUSIONS:
The overwhelming amount of historical evidence clearly contradicts Lincoln's assertion that the Constitution "is silent as to which, or who, is to exercise the power" of suspending habeas corpus.

Though legal relativists, loose constructionists, and even some otherwise reliable constitutionalists maintain that Lincoln's action of suspending habeas corpus was without constitutional flaw, the volume of evidence renders such a position insupportable.

In addition to the unconstitutional suspension of habeas corpus, there remains the issue of the Merryman ruling. Lincoln's action of ignoring this ruling by failing to either abide by it or appeal it to the Supreme Court constitutes a violation of the United States judiciary branch's authority that remains on his record even if one were to hypothetically permit its unlikely reversal had it been appealed.

The sum of these actions by Lincoln amount to clear and material violations of the United States Constitution. It is further not unreasonable to conclude that in other times, similar actions by a president of the United States would have been cause for his impeachment and removal from office.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

http://www.critical-theory.com/karl-marx-and-abraham-lincoln-penpals/

You can find the whole exchange here from Marxists.org. There is also an entire book, “An Unfinished Revolution,” about Marx’s and Lincoln’s letter exchanges. Whether or not the book encompasses more than these 2 letters is vague. The description reads.

Karl Marx and Abraham Lincoln exchanged letters at the end of the Civil War, with Marx writing on behalf of the International Working Men’s Association. Although they were divided by far more than the Atlantic Ocean, they agreed on the urgency of suppressing slavery and the cause of “free labor.” In his introduction Robin Blackburn argues that Lincoln’s response to the IWA was a sign of the importance of the German American community as well as of the role of the International in opposing European recognition of the Confederacy

Address of the International Working Men's Association to Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America

Presented to U.S. Ambassador Charles Francis Adams

Sir:

We congratulate the American people upon your re-election by a large majority. If resistance to the Slave Power was the reserved watchword of your first election, the triumphant war cry of your re-election is Death to Slavery.

From the commencement of the titanic American strife the workingmen of Europe felt instinctively that the star-spangled banner carried the destiny of their class. The contest for the territories which opened the dire epopee, was it not to decide whether the virgin soil of immense tracts should be wedded to the labor of the emigrant or prostituted by the tramp of the slave driver?

When an oligarchy of 300,000 slaveholders dared to inscribe, for the first time in the annals of the world, "slavery" on the banner of Armed Revolt, when on the very spots where hardly a century ago the idea of one great Democratic Republic had first sprung up, whence the first Declaration of the Rights of Man was issued, and the first impulse given to the European revolution of the eighteenth century; when on those very spots counterrevolution, with systematic thoroughness, gloried in rescinding "the ideas entertained at the time of the formation of the old constitution", and maintained slavery to be "a beneficent institution", indeed, the old solution of the great problem of "the relation of capital to labor", and cynically proclaimed property in man "the cornerstone of the new edifice" — then the working classes of Europe understood at once, even before the fanatic partisanship of the upper classes for the Confederate gentry had given its dismal warning, that the slaveholders' rebellion was to sound the tocsin for a general holy crusade of property against labor, and that for the men of labor, with their hopes for the future, even their past conquests were at stake in that tremendous conflict on the other side of the Atlantic. Everywhere they bore therefore patiently the hardships imposed upon them by the cotton crisis, opposed enthusiastically the proslavery intervention of their betters — and, from most parts of Europe, contributed their quota of blood to the good cause.

While the workingmen, the true political powers of the North, allowed slavery to defile their own republic, while before the Negro, mastered and sold without his concurrence, they boasted it the highest prerogative of the white-skinned laborer to sell himself and choose his own master, they were unable to attain the true freedom of labor, or to support their European brethren in their struggle for emancipation; but this barrier to progress has been swept off by the red sea of civil war.

The workingmen of Europe feel sure that, as the American War of Independence initiated a new era of ascendancy for the middle class, so the American Antislavery War will do for the working classes. They consider it an earnest of the epoch to come that it fell to the lot of Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded son of the working class, to lead his country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world.

Signed on behalf of the International Workingmen's Association, the Central Council:

Longmaid, Worley, Whitlock, Fox, Blackmore, Hartwell, Pidgeon, Lucraft, Weston, Dell, Nieass, Shaw, Lake, Buckley, Osbourne, Howell, Carter, Wheeler, Stainsby, Morgan, Grossmith, Dick, Denoual, Jourdain, Morrissot, Leroux, Bordage, Bocquet, Talandier, Dupont, L.Wolff, Aldovrandi, Lama, Solustri, Nusperli, Eccarius, Wolff, Lessner, Pfander, Lochner, Kaub, Bolleter, Rybczinski, Hansen, Schantzenbach, Smales, Cornelius, Petersen, Otto, Bagnagatti, Setacci;

George Odger, President of the Council; P.V. Lubez, Corresponding Secretary for France; Karl Marx, Corresponding Secretary for Germany; G.P. Fontana, Corresponding Secretary for Italy; J.E. Holtorp, Corresponding Secretary for Poland; H.F. Jung, Corresponding Secretary for Switzerland; William R. Cremer, Honorary General Secretary.

From the minutes of the Central (General) Council of the International — November 19, 1864:

"Dr. Marx then brought up the report of the subcommittee, also a draft of the address which had been drawn up for presentation to the people of America congratulating them on their having re-elected Abraham Lincoln as President. The address is as follows and was unanimously agreed to." [/b]

Marx & Lenin Praise Lincoln
Phillip Mericle
In the mid 19th century America heaved under the weight of a conflict that cost hundreds of thousands of lives. This war, the American Civil War, was not only significant for its impact on the Americans of those times, but also for the mark it left as one of most influential conflicts of modern history. Not only did Lincoln lead the North in a war to crush the South and its way of life, but his leadership became the American expression of a conflict that had been on-going in Europe since the 13th century.

Lincoln idolized by the American Communist party, 1939

Lincoln’s war for the subjection of the South constitutes the American expression of the centuries-old conflict between organic government and central government. With the victory of the North, so applauded by Marx and other communists, one more remnant of medieval Catholic society was defeated.

The Northern victory guaranteed the dominance of industry and central government over the traditions of the past, and it was Lincoln who installed the central government as an entity that would grow to consume all authority and define the limits of its own power.

In turn, this conquest was a landmark in the slow but steady degeneration of humanity that would culminate in the atheist and communist uprisings of the 20th century, paving the way for the culturally bankrupt and politically subjugated 21st century. Lincoln's war was an indispensable step in the march of the Revolution.

The Terrible Truth About Abraham Lincoln and the Confederate War
Posted on January 20, 2014

President Lincoln has been all but deified in America, with a god-like giant statue at a Parthenon-like memorial in Washington. Generations of school children have been indoctrinated with the story that “Honest Abe” Lincoln is a national hero who saved the Union and fought a noble war to end slavery, and that the “evil” Southern states seceded from the Union to protect slavery.

This is the Yankee myth of history, written and promulgated by Northerners, and it is a complete falsity. It was produced and entrenched in the culture in large part to gloss over the terrible war crimes committed by Union soldiers in the War Between the States, as well as Lincoln’s violations of the law, his shredding of the Constitution, and other reprehensible acts. It has been very effective in keeping the average American ignorant of the real causes of the war, and the real nature, character and record of Lincoln. Let us look at some unpleasant facts.

In his first inaugural address, Lincoln stated clearly that (1) he had no legal authority to interfere with slavery where it existed, (2) that he had no inclination or intention to do so even if he had the legal authority, (3) that he would enforce the Fugitive Slave Act, returning runaway slaves escaping to the North to their masters in the South, and (4) that he fully supported the Thirteenth Amendment then being debated in Congress which would protect slavery in perpetuity and was irrevocable. He later famously stated, “Do not paint me with the Abolitionist brush.”

Although there was some opposition to slavery in the country, the government was willing to concede everything the South wanted regarding slavery to keep it in the Union. Given all these facts, the idea that the South seceded to protect slavery is as absurd as the idea that Lincoln fought the war to end slavery.

Lincoln himself said in a famous letter after the war began that his sole purpose was to save the Union, and not to either save or end slavery; that if he could save the Union without freeing a single slave, he would. Nothing could be clearer.
...

Lincoln was the greatest tyrant and despot in American history. In the first four months of his presidency, he created a complete military dictatorship, destroyed the Constitution, ended forever the constitutional republic which the Founding Fathers instituted, committed horrendous crimes against civilian citizens, and formed the tyrannical, overbearing and oppressive Federal government which the American people suffer under to this day.

In his first four months, he

1.Failed to call Congress into session after the South fired upon Fort Sumter, in direct violation of the Constitution.
2.Called up an army of 75,000 men, bypassing the Congressional authority in direct violation of the Constitution.
3.Unilaterally suspended the writ of habeas corpus, a function of Congress, violating the Constitution. This gave him the power, as he saw it, to arrest civilians without charge and imprison them indefinitely without trial—which he did.
4.Ignored a Supreme Court order to restore the right of habeas corpus, thus violating the Constitution again and ignoring the Separation of Powers which the Founders put in place exactly for the purpose of preventing one man’s using tyrannical powers in the executive.
5.When the Chief Justice forwarded a copy of the Supreme Court’s decision to Lincoln, he wrote out an order for the arrest of the Chief Justice and gave it to a U.S. Marshall for expedition, in violation of the Constitution.
6.Unilaterally ordered a naval blockade of southern ports, an act of war, and a responsibility of Congress, in violation of the Constitution.
7.Commandeered and closed over 300 newspapers in the North, because of editorials against his war policy and his illegal military invasion of the South. This clearly violated the First Amendment freedom of speech and press clauses.
8.Sent in Army forces to destroy the printing presses and other machinery at those newspapers, in violation of the Constitution.
9.Arrested the publishers, editors and owners of those newspapers, and imprisoned them without charge and without trial for the remainder of the war, all in direct violation of both the Constitution and the Supreme Court order aforementioned.
10.Arrested and imprisoned, without charge or trial, another 15,000-20,000 U.S. citizens who dared to speak out against the war, his policies, or were suspected of anti-war feelings. (Relative to the population at the time, this would be equivalent to President G.W. Bush arresting and imprisoning roughly 150,000-200,000 Americans without trial for “disagreeing” with the Iraq war; can you imagine?)
11.Sent the Army to arrest the entire legislature of Maryland to keep them from meeting legally, because they were debating a bill of secession; they were all imprisoned without charge or trial, in direct violation of the Constitution.
12.Unilaterally created the state of West Virginia in direct violation of the Constitution.
13.Sent 350,000 Northern men to their deaths to kill 350,000 Southern men in order to force the free and sovereign states of the South to remain in the Union they, the people, legally voted to peacefully withdraw from, all in order to continue the South’s revenue flow into the North.

These are just a few of the most egregious things Lincoln did during his despotic presidency. He set himself up as a tyrannical dictator with powers never before utilized or even imagined by any previous administration. During this four years of terrible war he was one of the greatest despots the world has ever known, his tyranny focused against his own countrymen, both North and South. He was called a despot and tyrant by many newspapers and citizens both North and South, until he had imprisoned nearly all those who dared to simply speak out against his unconstitutional usurpations of power. Those who disagreed with him were branded as “traitors”, just as were the brave and honorable men in the states which had legally seceded from the Union over just such issues as these criminal abuses of power by the Federal government.

Was Lincoln a Tyrant?
By Jennifer L. Weber
 March 25, 2013 10:57 am

When Abraham Lincoln took office in March 1861, the executive branch was small and relatively limited in its power. By the time of his assassination, he had claimed more prerogatives than any president before him, and the executive branch had grown enormously.

Lincoln’s critics witnessed his expanding power with alarm. They accused him of becoming a tyrant and warned that his assertions of authority under the guise of “commander in chief” threatened the viability of a constitutional democracy.

Lincoln ignored his foes and kept moving. And, despite lingering discomfort with some of his actions – particularly around the issue of civil liberties – history has largely vindicated him. Why?

Lincoln was elected in November 1860 with no ambition to expand presidential powers. But after Confederates fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, he quickly called for 75,000 militia troops and ordered a blockade of Southern ports, even though a blockade suggests a declaration of a state of war, which only Congress can declare. Then he issued a call for more than 40,000 three-year volunteers, even though Congress has the constitutional responsibility to raise armies.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5
