Raul Castro will step down as Cuba's president on April 19, 2018, he announced Thursday during the National Assembly meeting in Havana.

Castro, 86, has led the country since 2006 after his brother, Fidel Castro, stepped down due to health issues. The younger Castro officially became the country's president in 2008. Fidel Castro died on Nov. 25, 2016, at the age of 90.

Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed as Cuba's new president

The silver-haired Diaz-Canel - a top Communist Party figure who has served as first vice president since 2013 - is the island's first leader born after the 1959 revolution.

In a speech after his appointment he vowed to keep the Caribbean island on the path of "revolution," but also on the path of economic reform.

Mr Diaz-Canel was elected in a landmark vote of the National Assembly a day before his 58th birthday.
...
Thursday's symbolic vote took place on the anniversary of the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, when Fidel's forces defeated 1,400 US-backed rebels seeking to overthrow him.
...
Crucially, he will remain under the watchful eye of Castro, who will continue to serve as the head of Cuba's all-powerful Communist Party.

English spoke extensively on the dark career of Cuban American exile José Miguel Battle and his role in fighting with CIA-trained Cuban exiles during the ill-fated Bay Of Pigs invasion in 1961. Battle remained in the US after the fiasco and began to build a criminal empire based on the illegal numbers racket (lottery) along the entire Eastern seaboard. He added that the Cuban mob also sponsored assassinations and other politically-motivated dirty tricks in support of the CIA, which promised Cuban exiles that they would eventually assassinate Fidel Castro. At its height, the numbers operation even counted certain police forces in New York and New Jersey among its co-conspirators. Battle was eventually caught and died in custody in 2007.

The Infamous Firing Squads

Thousands of Cubans have died in front of Castro’s infamous ‘paredón’ (the wall). There was no discrimination, as far as sending people to the firing squad was concerned. Young and old, black and white, rich and poor were sent to ‘el paredón’.
Many of those who helped Castro gain power, like Comandantes Ernesto Sori Marin and William Morgan, an American, were among the thousands who were shot.

US screens more staff in China over mystery health issues

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) ? A U.S. medical team was screening more Americans who work at the consulate in southern China as the State Department confirmed evacuating a number of government employees who experienced unexplained health issues like those that have hurt U.S. personnel in Cuba and China.

The evacuations of workers in Guangzhou followed medical testing that revealed they might have been affected. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said ?a number of individuals? had been brought to the U.S. but didn?t say how many were affected or evacuated. A previous case in Guangzhou, disclosed last month, prompted the tests.

Nauert also said that remaining U.S. government personnel and their families in Guangzhou would also be able to request testing if they ?noted concerning symptoms or wanted baseline screening.?

The incidents have raised fears the unexplained issues that started in Cuba in 2016 have expanded. The U.S. government has deemed those incidents ?specific attacks? on American workers but hasn?t publicly identified a cause or culprit. Most of the incidents were accompanied by bizarre, unexplained sounds that initially led U.S. investigators to suspect a sonic attack.

Symptoms have included dizziness, headaches and an inability to concentrate. The American government worker who previously was removed from China reported ?subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure,? the Guangzhou consulate reported last month
