Report: Rosenstein Authorized Manafort Investigation

Special Counsel Robert Mueller dropped the bombshell in a new court filing this week.

Paul Manafort’s attorneys have long argued that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of their client’s underreported finances related to lobbying work for the former Ukrainian government was beyond his scope until Mueller pulled out a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

According to The Daily Caller, Rosenstein authored the memo Aug. 2, 2017, nearly three months after Mueller was appointed special counsel. The memo is reportedly heavily redacted, but it specifically authorized the investigation of allegations Manafort “committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials” to interfere in the 2016 election as well as crimes “arising out of payments he received from the Ukrainian government before and during the tenure of President Viktor Yanukovych.”

The memo was part of a filing made by Mueller’s team arguing in court that the special counsel’s original mandate led to a natural connection to Manafort’s lobbying work in which he was paid millions by a political party affiliated with Yanukovych, who was a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Manafort is accused of illegally laundering some of that money through shell companies.

None of those accusations actually have anything to do with the 2016 presidential campaign.
