Nearly half in top 5 U.S. cities don?t speak English at home, record 67 million
by Paul Bedard
 | September 19, 2018 11:37 AM

Nearly half of the residents in the nation?s five biggest cities do not speak English at home, choosing instead their native language, according to the latest Census Bureau data that details the impact of a decade of soft immigration policies.

Overall, a record 67 million do not speak English at home, said the bureau. That is nearly double in 27 years.

In its just-released analysis of the Census data, the Center for Immigration Studies said,
?As a share of the population, 21.8 percent of U.S. residents speak a foreign language at home ? roughly double the 11 percent in 1980.?

Toronto: Migrants Housed in Hotel ?Slaughtered Goats? in Public Bathrooms
Other guests complain of threats, sexual harassment & piles of garbage

'The staff should have told us it was a refugee camp,'

An American visitor who stayed at a hotel in Toronto where hundreds of ?refugees? are being housed claims that animal services had to be called because migrants were slaughtering goats in the public bathrooms.

The claim appears in a Toronto Sun article entitled ?Irregular? migrants continue to flock into Toronto.

With Toronto?s migrant shelters full and 18-20 mostly Nigerian ?refugees? arriving in the city every day, the government is having to pay for hotels to accommodate the newcomers, despite having already spent $64.5 million on housing migrants over the last 11 months alone.

A total of ?1,719 irregular (illegal) migrants/refugees/asylum seekers? are being housed in Toronto hotels, ?including 577 housed at the Radisson Toronto East hotel in 146 rooms.?

Texas desert tent city for immigrant children balloons in size

October 12, 2018

TORNILLO, Texas (Reuters) - A tent city in the west Texas desert set up to hold immigrant children has expanded its capacity by nearly 10 times to 3,800 beds since it opened in June, officials said on Friday.

The facility in the border city of Tornillo sprang up with 400 beds when the Trump administration put into place its "zero tolerance" policy that called for separating parents from children after families crossed the border from Mexico illegally.

While officials say Tornillo no longer holds minors separated under "zero tolerance," after the administration rolled back that policy following a public outcry and under pressure from U.S. courts, the facility has grown. It now includes children who crossed the U.S. border on their own.

Tornillo houses 1,465 children between the ages of 13 and 17, of whom nearly 900 were detained coming from Guatemala, officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services said during a camp tour.

"No children that were a part of the family separations are at the Tornillo facility," the Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.

WATCH: 1300+ Hondurans Begin Organized Trek to U.S. Border
14 Oct 2018

More than 1300 Honduran men, women, and children began a trek that is expected to take them through Central America and Mexico. Some of the migrants plan to seek asylum in Mexico while others plan to head to the U.S. border. The march appears to be organized through social media.

The march, dubbed ?March of the Migrants,? began this weekend in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where more than 1300 men, women, and children began a trek that will take them from Honduras to Guatemala and into Mexico where some will seek refugee status. Others are expected to continue north to the U.S border, Reuters reported.

Soon after the march began, social media groups promoting the well being of Honduras and Central America posted videos and photographs condemning the government and the lack of opportunities in the country.

More than 4,000 migrants forced their way into Mexico after storming a border fence with Guatemala.

Video captured by Noticias Telemundo shows the moment when hundreds of migrants force the gate open and rush into Mexico despite officials efforts to keep the migrants out.

Mexican authorities previously vowed to turn back any migrants who did not follow immigration law.

Lindsey Graham to Introduce Bill Ending Birthright Citizenship ?Magnet? for Illegal Immigration
30 Oct 2018

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced on Tuesday that he plans to introduce legislation ending birthright citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants on American soil, citing it as a ?magnet for illegal immigration.?

President Donald J. Trump announced on Tuesday that he plans to draft an executive order to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants born in America.

Trump told Axios? Jonathan Swan:

But now they?re saying I can do it with just an executive order. Now, how ridiculous?we are the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits? It?s ridiculous. It?s ridiculous?and it has to end.

Sen. Graham cheered Trump?s move against birthright citizenship, citing it as a significant ?magnet? for illegal immigration.

?Finally, a president willing to take on this absurd policy of birthright citizenship,? Graham said in a statement. ?I?ve always supported comprehensive immigration reform ? and at the same time ? the elimination of birthright citizenship.?

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Wednesday, October 31, 2018

The U.S. tied its all-time record for new immigration ? both legal and illegal ? in 2016, with 1.75 million arrivals, according to a new study Wednesday.

The Center for Immigration Studies, which is releasing the report, says the increase is part of a post-Great Recession rebound that?s quickly changing the demographics of the U.S.

The surge was driven chiefly by Latin America, which saw its numbers double from about 335,000 in 2011 to 668,000 in 2016, pushing it past Asia as the top-sending region.

?The dramatic increase in new immigrants settling in the United States in recent years is primarily driven by the nation?s generous legal immigration system, both long-term temporary visa holders (e.g. guest workers and foreign students) and new permanent residents (green cards),? wrote Steven A. Camarota, research director at the center.

Immigration Bill, 1963: February-December

https://cis.org/Report/HartCeller-Immigration-Act-1965
The Hart-Celler Immigration Act of 1965
Political figures and historic circumstances produced dramatic, unintended consequences

By Jerry Kammer on September 30, 2015

The 1965 legislation was named the Hart-Celler Act for its principal sponsors in the Senate and House of Representatives. It abolished the quota system, which critics condemned as a racist contradiction of fundamental American values. By liberalizing the rules for immigration, especially by prioritizing family reunification, it also stimulated rapid growth of immigration numbers. Once immigrants had naturalized, they were able to sponsor relatives in their native lands in an ever-lengthening migratory process called chain migration. That unintended consequence is Hart-Celler's enduring legacy.

"The 1965 immigration law quickly transformed the ethnic portrait of the United States,"2 scholars have noted. At first the new immigration came largely from southern Europe, especially Italy. But that stream played out in about a decade. Meanwhile, immigration from Eastern Europe was limited by repressive communist governments.

By 1980, most immigrants were coming from Latin America, Asia, and Africa ? in numbers far greater than the annual average of 300,000 that had prevailed during the 1960s. Despite assurances by Hart-Celler advocates that the bill would add little to the immigrant stream, more than seven million newcomers entered the country legally during the 1980s. That trend has continued. Meanwhile, illegal immigration also began a decades-long surge.

Emanuel Celler, Former Brooklyn Congressman, Dies at 92
By MAURICE CARROLL JAN. 16, 1981

manuel Celler, who served a half-century in the House of Representatives, died yesterday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 92 years old.

Mr. Celler, one of the most influential New Yorkers who ever served in the House, was defeated in the 1972 Democratic primary in a stunning upset by a political unknown, Elizabeth Holtzman. Only days before his defeat, Mr. Celler had described his opponent as ''irritating as a hangnail, which nail I am going to cut off.''

When Mr. Celler, 34 years old, brash and bouncy, was first elected to the House, Warren G. Harding was President. The year was 1922. Led on Civil Rights Bills

Seven Presidents and 42 years later, Mr. Celler, still bouncy but his brashness mellowed by the years, became the dean of the House. The distinction, he said, had ''crept up on me unawares.''

Seniority brings power in Congress, and as Mr. Celler's service lengthened, his political sway grew. He became chairman of the Judiciary Committee in 1949 and, except for the years when Republicans controlled the House, held the post from then on.

His committee handled civil-rights legislation in the years of the nation's major advances in that area. In 1957, he wrote and shepherded into law the first comprehensive rights legislation enacted by Congress in 82 years.

He was the author of the more comprehensive 1960 Civil Rights Act, and in February 1964, he guided to passage for the Johnson Administration a law retaining virtually all the elements of a draft that President Kennedy had submitted the year before.

''I feel like I've climbed Mount Everest,'' Mr. Celler said wearily after the 1964 bill passed, 290 to 130, and the House gave him a standing ovation. Parlor Tricks and Pungency
....
In 1922, a Democratic leader asked if Mr. Celler would like to be the party's nominee for Congress from the 10th District, an honor but hardly a prize. The district had never sent a Democrat to Congress.
...
From the start, he had been the liberal that his upbringing, and his district, dictated. He supported the major New Deal and Fair Deal programs. He was among the small band that opposed the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, he pressed antitrust legislation and he regularly scored high on the liberalism ratings compiled by the Americans for Democratic Action.
