Exclusive: State Department quietly warning region on Syrian WMDs

Posted By Josh Rogin Friday, February 24, 2012 - 3:03 PM Share

The State Department has begun coordinating with Syria's neighbors to prepare for the handling of President Bashar al-Assad's extensive weapons of mass destruction if and when his regime collapses, The Cable has learned.

This week, the State Department sent a diplomatic demarche to Syria's neighbors Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, warning them about the possibility of Syria's WMDs crossing their borders and offering U.S. government help in dealing with the problem, three Obama administration officials confirmed to The Cable. For concerned parties both inside and outside the U.S. government, the demarche signifies that the United States is increasingly developing plans to deal with the dangers of a post-Assad Syria -- while simultaneously highlighting the lack of planning for how to directly bring about Assad's downfall.

Syria is believed to have a substantial chemical weapons program, which includes mustard gas and sophisticated nerve agents, such as sarin gas, as well as biological weapons. Syria has also refused IAEA requests to make available facilities that were part of its nuclear weapons program and may still be in operation.

The State Department declined to provide access to any officials to discuss the private diplomatic communication on the record, such as the author of the demarche Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Tom Countryman. In a meeting with reporters earlier this year, Countryman expressed confidence that the United States knows where Syria's WMD stockpiles are, but warned that they could become a very serious security issue for Syria and the region going forward.

‘US to announce aerial blockade on Syria’

‘US to announce aerial blockade on Syria’

US readies for possibility of intervention without UN resolution, Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing US military official; plan to include humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees on Turkey’s border

The Pentagon is readying for the possibility of intervention in Syria, aiming to halt Syrian President Bashsar Assad‘s violent crackdown on protesters, the newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported Saturday, citing a US military offical.

According to the official, the intervention scenario calls for the establishment of a buffer zone on the Turkish border, in order to receive Syrian refugees. The Red Cross would then provide the civilians humanitarian aid, before NATO crews would arrive from Turkey and join the efforts.

The measure would pave the way for the US to declare an aerial blockade on Syria.

The intercession is to be modeled after NATO’s efforts in Kosovo, which brought an end to the Serbian control of the region. NATO’s plan of action included prolonged aerial shelling.

The US’ diplomatic efforts have yet to yield an effective international resolution that would stop the bloodshed. More than 100 protesters have died over the weekend alone, human rights activists said.

Russia, China to join aid efforts?

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, the Pentagon does not anticipate a change of heart on the part of China or Russia, who have opposed foreign intervention or sanctions against Syria. But the US expects the two nations to join the humanitarian aid efforts, support a ceasefire between the Syrian regime and rebels and send special UN envoys to investigate the developments in the country.

The next step in the reported US Department of Defense plan would be to appoint a team of UN observers to monitor the humanitarian aid, and enter Syria. They would need aerial protection, which would eventually lead to an aerial blockade.

DIG-GEO, would know if this is considered an act of war despite their smoke screen  of humanitarian aid.

Humane, sure, 3 bags full.According to Asharq Al-Awsat, the Pentagon does not anticipate a change of heart on the part of China or Russia, who have opposed foreign intervention or sanctions against Syria. The stage is being set, or it has been and the hour approcahes. Please correct me if I am wrong on this. Syria is in the midst of a civil war, not only soldiers are using lethal force, but the opposition is as well, though its not a front pager  its being realistic the oposition is a mixed bag.
Do you think this is a replay of Iraq, not a twin episode but it will do till one comes along. WMD's were the primary regimes reason for the invasion, though they stuck Sadam in there as the boogey man to appease the public. I am in no way defending Sadam simply reiterating the fact WMD's were the stuffed down our throats daily by the kingpins. If the USA acts alone on this without UN sanctions it will be under the guize of a humantarian act, sure-3 bags.
They spin the tale they anticipate China and Russia supply humanitarian aid, all the while they have  airiel intervention.
Perpetual war is a definite, Russia isn't pleased nor China. All said and one, I have to repeat, we are the nucleus of the elites goal, this is a step up the ladder to achieve this end game.
Iraq is now the feeding ground what can be refered to as carpet bagging, supercorps are giggling and suking on the straw. Smedly Butler could have explained this from A-Z.

Clinton & Al Qaeda vs. Syria
http://my.firedoglake.com/fairleft/2012/02/13/clinton-al-qaeda-vs-syria/
By: fairleft Monday February 13, 2012 6:35 am

In the latest war on Syria news , U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has allied the U.S. with al Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahri in the effort to overthrow the Syrian government of Bashir Assad. Both leaders are quoted in our news from the warfront below:

“We have to redouble our efforts outside of the United Nations with those allies and partners who support the Syrian people’s right to have a better future,” Al-Zawahri said. “Assad must go.”

Clinton urged Muslim states, including Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, to come to the aid of Syrian protesters.

“We are trying to start a process of political transition,” Al-Zawahri said. “The failure to do so will increase the risk of a brutal civil war.”

“If we want freedom, we must be liberated from this regime. If we want justice, we must retaliate against this regime,” Clinton said.

Oops, check that, all the quotes by Clinton should be Al-Zawahri’s and the ones by Zawahri should be Clinton.

But you get the picture. The suicide bombers of Damascus have now officially allied themselves with what Western propaganda has presented as an entirely peaceful movement for democracy. The move by al Qaeda is also another very helpful teaching point, that the Syrian rebellion does or will boil down to religious sectarianism and favoritism, noting that the rebellious towns are mostly and al Qaeda is entirely Sunni. The following from the Irish Times is also helpful for understanding what is going on, in my opinion:

The struggle for territory is accompanied by looting by militiamen and criminals, and by kidnappings of Sunnis by Alawites and vice-versa. Some victims are exchanged, some ransomed, others tortured and killed, their bodies dumped on waste ground. According to my diplomatic source, more than 100 Alawite women have been abducted, held for long periods and raped, tortured and slain. Alawites have retaliated by kidnapping and abusing Sunni women.

The source remarks that, in rebel-held Sunni neighbourhoods of Homs, mainly fundamentalist militants have the full support of the populace and even the “old families” who harbour long-standing animosities towards the secular regime. “It is an Islamist uprising to reassert the supremacy of Muslims over infidels,” he said. “Sunnis [elsewhere] do not admit what is happening in Homs. The opposition has used religion to incite people in the streets. While the opposition accuses the regime of exploiting the threat of sectarian warfare to turn people against the rebels, the government’s only hope is to keep playing the secular card.”

So then, ‘For What?‘ — the point of all the civilian and military deaths produced by an uncompromising armed rebellion and Western surge for regime change — seems to be getting answered.
All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately
