Ahmed Wali Karzai, brother of Afghan president, killed by trusted guard

By Joshua Partlow and Kevin Sieff, Updated: Tuesday, July 12, 8:31 AM

KABUL — The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai was assassinated by a trusted local security official Tuesday, a political killing that was immediately claimed by the Taliban and makes grimly clear the vulnerability of Afghan officials as the United States prepares to reduce its military presence.

Ahmed Wali Karzai — head of Kandahar’s provincial council and widely considered the most powerful man in southern Afghanistan — was meeting with tribal elders and politicians in his heavily fortified home in downtown Kandahar city Tuesday morning, according to two people at the house at the time.

Sardar Mohammad, a longtime confidant and commander of the police post near Karzai’s ancestral home, arrived and requested a private discussion, officials said. Karzai and Mohammad left for another room, and soon three gunshots rang out.

Agha Lalai Destegeri, the deputy provincial council chief, said he rushed in to find Karzai shot in the head, chest and hand.

CIA hired Karzai brother before 9/11, Woodward says

Ahmed Wali Karzai, the half-brother of Afghanistan’s president and boss of the strategically important Kandahar province, has been on the CIA payroll for over a decade, Bob Woodward writes in his new book, “Obama’s Wars.”

By the fall of 2008, Woodward says, “Ahmed Wali Karzai had been on the CIA payroll for years, beginning before 9/11. He had belonged to the CIA's small network of paid agents and informants inside Afghanistan. In addition, the CIA paid him money through his half-brother, the president.”

Hamid Karzai was plucked from obscurity and installed as president after U.S.-backed Afghan forces chased the Taliban from power following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

There have been many accounts of his brother’s relationship with the CIA over the years, leaving the impression that he is a CIA “agent,” i.e., a controlled asset of the spy agency.

Bomber kills 5 at service for Karzai's half-brother

Updated: Thu Jul. 14 2011 05:56:39

CTV News.ca Staff

A suicide bomber snuck into the Thursday memorial service for the slain half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and blew himself up, killing five people and injuring at least 15 others.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said Hekmatullah Hekmat, the head of the clerical council for the province, was among those killed inside the Sarra Jamai mosque in Kandahar city, as was a young child.

The deadly blast came just a day after the funeral for Ahmed Wali Karzai, the powerful half-brother of the president who headed Kandahar's provincial council at the time of his death.

He died Tuesday when he was shot in the head and chest by a bodyguard. The Taliban claimed that they had recruited the shooter who carried out the assassination.

Adviser to Afghan president murdered: official

By Massoud Hosseini (AFP) – 2 hours ago

KABUL — A senior adviser to Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been murdered along with a member of parliament visiting him at his Kabul home, a senior government official told AFP on Sunday.

Jan Mohammad Khan, the former governor of southern Uruzgan province and a key ally of the embattled president, was killed in an attack that was still ongoing, according to police in the area.

A senior police official said a second man was also killed -- a member of parliament from Uruzgan, Mohammad Hashem Watanwal -- and an interior ministry official confirmed there had been a second death.

The attack comes less than a week after the president's half-brother Ahmed Wali Karzai was assassinated by a close friend at his home in the southern province of Kandahar, birthplace of the Taliban.

Sunday also marked the beginning of the national process of handing responsibility for security from foreign forces to Afghans, and the last day in the job for the top US commander in Afghanistan General David Petraeus.
