FAA warns of ongoing GPS issues in southeastern US due to Defense Department 'tests'
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/faa-warns-of-ongoing-gps-issues-in-southeastern-us-due-to-defens/
By Donald Melanson posted Jan 20th 2011 2:53PM

Don't panic, but anyone planning on using GPS in the southeastern US for the next month or so will likely want to make sure they have a fallback option. That's according to a flight advisory just issued by the FAA, which warns pilots that their GPS signal "may be unreliable or unavailable" due to "GPS tests" that the Department of Defense will be conducting between January 20th and February 22nd. Details are fairly light beyond that, but the FAA does note that when the "tests" occur they will be active for 45 minutes, and be followed by 15 minutes of off time -- additional notices to pilots will apparently be issued at least 24 hours prior to any test. Of course, while this particular advisory is directed at pilots, it will presumably will also affect all other GPS devices, as the FAA doesn't mention any GPS issues specific to aviation. The real question, however, is just what those mysterious "GPS tests" are -- if they're, in fact, GPS tests at all...

A second NOTAM (PDF) warns of similar GPS disruptions centered in Nevada around the same period.

“Pilots are highly recommended to report anomalies during testing to the appropriate [Air Route Traffic Control Center] to assist in the determination of the extent of GPS degradation during tests.”

During the effective period, test events will be active for 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of off time.

It's not clear if GPS apps in smartphones and car navigation systems will be affected. We're guessing they will. Readers who know for sure are encouraged to leave a comment. ®

This story was updated to add details about a second disruption centered in Nevada.

Looks like FAA is finally blowing the whistle on the technology that Joe Stack was working on and why he was murdered! They are blowing the whistle on the tech that leads to Ptech and over 25 flight "abnormailites being blamed on pilots!

This is pretty f-ing big!

The 2nd article I posted says these are "unspecified Pentagon tests". What could the Pentagon be up to that they don't want the FAA or anybody else tracking with GPS?

FAA Mandates All Aircraft Must Use GPS by 2020

by Caleb Johnson on May 28, 2010 at 08:41 AM

A new set of requirements handed down by the Federal Aviation Administration will overhaul the nation's air traffic control system within the next decade. According to an Associated Press report on CBS News, the FAA mandated that all aircraft and ground control must install and use GPS-tracking systems by 2020. It will cost $4 billion for the estimated 7,000 airliners and cargo planes plus more than 200,000 general aviation aircrafts to update their equipment. As of now, it isn't clear whether the government will help pay or simply leave airlines and pilots high and dry.

Presidential Decision Directive NSTC-6, 28 March 1996, U.S. Global Positioning System Policy

Quote
PURPOSE. This Instruction supplements references (a) and (b). It provides specific guidance, responsibilities and authority necessary to efficiently process DOD-sponsored GPS interference test requests within the Coast Guard.

Quote
On a periodic basis DOD and selected other agencies, e.g., National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), conduct testing or other activities which may infringe on the GPS frequency band. During the planning stages of these tests and activities, DOD has committed to requesting approval of the testing from DOT in an attempt to reduce impacts on civil GPS users.

Hmm...that is the route they take for nuclear sub tests.

I wonder if that will foul up pilots instruments on a plane or ships chartered in the waters?

Plane makes emergency landing in Oakland

Jessica Kwong, Chronicle Staff Writer

Sunday, January 23, 2011

(01-22) 18:45 PST Oakland -- A Southwest Airlines plane that left San Francisco International Airport for Chicago on Saturday afternoon made an emergency landing in Oakland for a warning light, which turned out to be a false alert.

Pilots on Flight 450, a 2:45 p.m. flight out of San Francisco, called Oakland International Airport at 3:16 p.m. after seeing a warning light come on, said Marilyn Sandifur, spokeswoman for the Port of Oakland, which operates the airport.

"It turned out there was nothing wrong - it was some problem with the electronics, so it was a false alarm when the light went on," Sandifur said.

The warning light indicated there could be overheating in the wheel well. The pilots diverted to the nearest airport, which they are trained to do, said Brandy King, a spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines.

Malfunction steers flight to Omaha

By Kevin Cole

Electrical problems caused a US Airways flight to make an emergency stop in Omaha early Sunday.

An airplane with 107 passengers and crew members that left Chicago bound for Phoenix landed safely at Eppley Airfield at 9:20 a.m.

According to emergency radio broadcasts, an Air Bus 320 reported trouble maintaining temperature in its cabin. The pilot also reported that the landing gear on the nose of the plane did not have steering ability.

Phil Jensen, an operations supervisor at Eppley, said the plane landed without incident and was being inspected by US Airways mechanics. Jensen said the inspection would determine whether the plane would continue to Phoenix or its passengers would be diverted to another aircraft.

Jet makes emergency landing in Norfolk

10:41 a.m. EST, January 23, 2011

A US Airways regional jet made an emergency landing at Norfolk International Airport Saturday night, WAVY-TV 10 is reporting. A warning light indicated a possible problem with the landing gear.

US Airways Express flight 2333 departed Norfolk for Charlotte, N.C., at 8:13 p.m. when pilots noticed the warning light, said airline spokesperson Valerie Wunder. The pilots declared an emergency as a precaution.

The pilots immediately diverted the plane back to Norfolk International Airport. The plane landed safely around 9 p.m.

EME is old technology.you just need an array of yagis(which they have a multitude of) and a visual on the moon.
at higher frequencies the power requirements are a little higher.and a little more dangerous.I was tuning out last night(watching scifi channel) and they were really plugging fema and how the military was controlling the weather and using it as a weapon. Some of it was kinda unnerving.as I said-I was trying to tune out.
those that would give up a little liberty to obtain a little security, deserve neither and will lose both.
