Ashley Turton, director of congressional affairs for Progress Energy, was found dead in a burning car Monday morning in Washington, Politico reports. Turton's husband is White House deputy director of House legislative affairs, Dan Turton.

It is with great sadness that I share with you some news about our White House family. Dan Turton's wife, Ashley, died this morning at their home in Washington. Many of you have worked with both of them during their careers on Capitol Hill, and they exemplify the definition of public servants. We are making every resource available to Dan and his family in his moment of need, and we will update you soon about where you can send condolences to the Turton family.

Ashley Turton, an energy lobbyist, died Monday during a fire at the family's Capitol Hill home. Her husband Dan is deputy director of legislative affairs at the White House, the liaison with the House of Representatives.

Piringer said the fire apparently started after the vehicle crashed into something, perhaps inside the garage, and the victim was unable to get out.

$13.7 billion Duke-Progress Energy merger creates largest U.S. utility firm- 5 hours ago

The combined firms would have $22.7 billion yearly revenues and over 7 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Duke Energy Corp. announced Monday its purchase for $13.7 billion of Progress Energy Inc. The buy-in makes Duke Energy the largest U.S. utility company and boosts its capacity to build new power plants that would comply with future greenhouse gas emission standards.
...
Federal regulators and state authorities still must approve the deal.

Johnson said their joint forces will result in more investments in new power plants, including nuclear reactors that would cut carbon dioxide emissions. Duke has pending applications to build a nuclear plant with two reactors in Cherokee Country, SC, while Progress has proposed to construct two reactors near its facilities in Raleigh, NC and two more in Levy County, FL.

The tragedy comes on top of another recent one for the family: Not long ago, Ashley Turton's brother was badly injured in a vehicular accident that left him in the constant care of their parents in North Carolina, two friends said.

Brian Wolff, former executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Ashley had called him on Sunday to say she had just gone to church to pray for her brother, who had learned his health insurance would no longer pay for his therapy.

It kind of looks like the Air Forces Re-entry vehicle they want to use as a lifeboat for the Space Station. Except this one appears to have rocket nozzles sticking out of the back. Puzzling for sure.

WASHINGTON - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now assisting D.C. Fire and EMS and D.C. Police with an investigation of a deadly fire that killed a key Washington lobbyist

...

A spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS says the ATF routinely helps out on most fire investigations because they bring in valuable resources. At this point, they are evaluating all possible scenarios, but have not determined a cause. Officials are also awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of death.

Officials do believe the BMW SUV that Turton was in initially had a low-impact crash which was followed by a fire. The airbags did not deploy.

Investigators say they're looking at all possible scenarios

Wait, they say the airbags didn't deploy it was such a "low impact crash", and yet there was a fire and she died? They need to explain that.

They need to explain how it is that within hours of the massive merger agreement, she is literally toast.

So why is the BATF investigating this if they don't suspect foul play?

Federal investigators have joined Washington police to try and determine the cause of a vehicle fire that killed a longtime Congressional aide turned lobbyist who was married to a senior White House legislative official.

A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Mike Campbell, confirmed that agents from the local office are joining in the investigation into what caused the fire in which Ashley Turton, 37, perished Monday.

"As of now, people are shaking their heads, it's a real mystery so our people are going to go out and look at the car, bumper to bumper, underneath....take a complete examination and evaluation of the car to determine if the car caught on fire, or what. Then they'll go to the scene, try to take a look at the garage to determined what caused that part of the fire," said Campbell.

Campbell said the involvement of the ATF is routine in a fire which causes injury.

"This is just normal procedure in the District," he said. "We have a task force in Washington DC with the DC Fire Marshal's office and [Metropolitan Police Department] homicide detectives. Anytime there's a fire with injury or fatality, the task force gets involved. MPD takes the lead on the homicide and we and DC Fire work the cause and origin part of the investigation."

An easy explanation would be that she, like many of the PTB, drove home stone drunk, hit the wall, she passed out in place, a short was created due to the impact, and poof, there was a fire. But you throw in the merger, and an easy explanation should go out of the window.

Even Palmer knows that if a person is alive when there's a fire, most likely they will have smoke and soot in their lungs. If dead before the fire, no smoke in lungs. And blunt force trauma severe enough to cause a death is rather obvious. SO what are they waiting for? Guess they need to get their stories straight? ::)

BMW X5's have a history of faulty air bags "exploding while driving". So if the airbags did not deploy then there must not have been any impact to speak of.

Man, if they tried to be any more casual about the ATF investigating an exploding car...

Where is the MSM screaming Domestic Terrorism? Where is DHS locking down the whole city? They seem to be fanatically ignoring this story.

Before becoming a lobbyist, Turton served as chief of staff to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat from Connecticut. She also spent time as an aide to Rep. Richard Gephardt.

Wife of Obama aide found dead in burning car in home's garage
« Reply #58 on: January 13, 2011, 05:24:38 pm »
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/jan/10/wife-of-obama-aide-found-dead-in-burning-car-in-ho/

A lobbyist for Progress Energy married to an aide to President Obama was found dead in a car fire at her home near the U.S. Capitol, fire authorities and the company said Monday.

The body of Ashley Turton, wife of the White House deputy director of legislative affairs Dan Turton, was discovered in a car that was burning in their garage, according to the D.C. Fire Department and the company.

Police said there was no evidence of foul play, but the death was a second blow to the Capitol Hill community still dealing with the shock from the Saturday shooting of Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, in which one of her aides was killed and two others wounded.

Mrs. Turton, the 37-year-old mother of three young children, had served as press spokesperson and then chief of staff for Connecticut Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro before joining the energy firm in 2007. Dan Turton also had extensive Capitol Hill ties, having worked most recently as staff director to New York Democratic Rep. Louise M. Slaughter before taking the White House post.

"She was special," Mrs. DeLauro said in a statement. "... She was a leader and comrade in arms to so many staff. She was a member of our family, and we mourn her. My heart goes out to her family, especially her husband Dan and their three young children. This is truly a terrible week for our congressional family."

House Minority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, said: "The Capitol Hill community knew Ashley for her professionalism and commitment to public service, and many called her a friend. She was taken from her family and her community far too soon, and I know that she will be greatly missed."

D.C. Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said firefighters were called to the Capitol Hill row house just before dawn and found a car engulfed in flames. No one else was injured and the fire department said an initial theory they are considering is that there may have been a crash involving the vehicle.

The back end of Mrs. Turton's SUV was partly out of the garage as if the vehicle was entering or leaving when the fire started, authorities said.

"The leading theory is [that] the car crashed through the garage doors and ... was found on fire in the garage area," Mr. Piringer said.

"Ashley was a valued employee whose insight and hard work had been critical on so many of our legislative and regulatory issues," said Bill Johnson, chief executive officer and president of Progress Energy, based in Raleigh, N.C.

Though car thieves regularly torch cars to remove evidence like DNA, there’s been no talk of a crime having been committed. As of yet, there’s no obvious indication that Turton was a victim of foul play. A source in homicide with the Metropolitan Police Department says the “the call” came in as a “traffic accident,” and murder detectives haven’t been asked to take the case. We’ve asked MPD to confirm, but haven’t gotten a response yet.

i am no rocket scientist but is the gas tank in the rear of the car?  would it not catch on fire? the fuel lines would melt or continue to add fuel and thus the fire would trace back to the fuel. i would say the fire was only burning for less that 15 minutes at most since the paint is still that good on the rear.  true i have only seen about 15 car fires in my life.  i sure hope bmw is looking at their dangerous vehicle to catch on fire from low speed collision.

No news since last Friday  (memorial service) ....  there was an autopsy - no results published -

http://markcrispinmiller.com/2011/01/atf-joins-dc-cops-in-probing-ashley-turton-car-fire-a-real-mystery/

As of now, people are shaking their heads, it’s a real mystery,' an ATF spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Mike Campbell, confirmed that agents from the local office are joining in the investigation into what caused the fire in which Ashley Turton, 37, was found dead Monday.
...
A highly regarded former Democratic staffer, Ashley Turton worked as an aide to former Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) and then as chief of staff to Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.). At the time of her death, she was a lobbyist for Progress Energy, a North Carolina-based utility company
...
The autopsy on that body has been completed. However, the cause and manner of death are ‘pending’ at this time,” said Beverly Fields, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Medical Examiner’s office. She wouldn’t confirm it was Turton but Fields said she believed there was a “tentative identification.”

Tomorrow or the next day, they plan to do a comprehensive look at the vehicle to see if that had something to do with the fire’s origin,” said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the D.C. Fire and EMS Department.

Based on the presence of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, former House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt, and former Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) at Turton’s funeral service on January 14 at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, there is little doubt that Turton and her husband were a “power couple” in the nation’s capital. But there was also a sense from those in attendance, including members of Ashley Turton’s family from North Carolina, that all the information about Ashley’s tragic death was not being brought forward by the police or the fire department.

In her eulogy of her former chief of staff, DeLauro spoke of someone who could exude the mannerisms of the “southern belle” but who was also politically attuned. DeLauro said that Ashley’s two favorite expressions belied her on-the-surface Southern charm: “shit fire” and “rat bastard.” DeLauro said that she had not heard such language “since Rahm Emanuel moved out of Stan’s and my basement.” DeLauro’s reference was to the rent-free use by Emanuel of her and her husband, Democratic lobbyist Stan Greenberg’s, townhouse, while Emanuel was a congressman from the Illinois 5th congressional district from 2003 to 2008.

DeLauro said she last saw Ashley Turton at her and Greenberg’s Christmas Party. DeLauro last communicated with Ashley Turton on January 5, the day the new Congress was sworn in. Ashley Turton was at a political event in Arizona where featured speakers included Democratic pollster and lobbyist James Carville, Greenberg’s business partner, and Karl Rove, the chief political adviser to President George W. Bush. Ashley Turton indicated to DeLauro that while she would probably attend Carville’s session, she probably would not bother with Rove’s.

Ashley Turton’s friends described in Turton a person who had an appetite for possible gossip. In some cases, while discussing a juicy bit of political rumor, Ashley Turton would tell her friends, usually over a glass of wine, that “this conversation needs to go out on the porch.” Ashley Turton confided in a close friend that she wanted to leave Washington and return to North Carolina to raise her family.

Considering Ashley Turton’s job as DeLauro’s chief of staff, legislative aide, and press secretary for a number of years; Emanuel’s use of DeLauro’s townhouse while he was a member of the House and in charge of doling out or withholding Democratic Party funds to candidates around the country; the presence of Greenberg’s partner Carville and Rove at the Arizona political confab attended by Ashley Turton’s just five days before her suspicious death, the question will always remain: What “juicy gossip” might have Ashley Turton taken with her to the grave?

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

No news since last Friday  (memorial service) ....  there was an autopsy - no results published -

No new news - How am I not surprised?

Car Trouble: BMW Fields Questions About Turton’s Death
Posted by Rend Smith on Jan. 20, 2011 at 11:55 am
...
Turton's body suffered burns, so the fire that erupted along or inside her 2008 BMW X5 sport-utility vehicle was obviously a factor.
... police and fire investigators have theorized there was an accident. The theory is that while heading from her home in the 800 block of A Street SE to work at around 5 a.m., Turton was in a low-speed crash. Colliding with her garage, Turton may have ignited something flammable stored there. The vehicle then ignited.

BMW has been contacted by investigators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about Turton's car
...
http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/bmw-x5/TRUVJJA2Q79QUHKB8

Message boards indicate X5s have caught fire before, though. "I pulled into the garage (inside a 170 unit condo building!), turned off the ignition, went inside, and within 15 minutes there are 8 fire trucks outside, and my X5 was engulfed in flames," one user posts in a forum.
...
One message board poster, Hope Pessis, of Marina del Rey, Calif., tells City Desk her 2002 X5 caught fire in 2006, and that she knows of other, similar blazes. "I have received e-mails from all over the world from people who's[sic] BMWX5 went up in flames in the same manner as mine," she says.

There are websites that claim BMW fires are a longstanding problem the company has ignored. If investigators link Turton's death to mechanical problems with the car, BMW can expect some fallout. It's still early in the investigation, though, and BMW seems earnestly concerned about the fire. It was clear that Plucinsky has been following Turton's story closely.

New projects have encountered delays attributable to such factors as rising costs, adverse regulatory decisions, difficulties in negotiations for new reactors, and last-minute reactor design changes [ Talk about BS!!! ]

Potential Reactor Sites
...
Levy County, Florida (Progress Energy)
The COL application was submitted to the NRC on 30 July 2008.

Progress Energy's intention to seek a COL for new reactors in its Florida marketing area was announced in August 2005, when Progress also announced plans to investigate expanding its Shearon Harris site in North Carolina. In May 2007, two Westinghouse AP 1000 units were announced. Subsequently, initial clearance for the project has been obtained from Levy County officials. On 5 June 2008, the NRC held a public meeting on the Levy application.6 In April 2010, Progress Energy announced that the anticipated schedule has delayed and the cost estimates have been revised upward. The original estimate was $17.2 billion but, under the new estimate the costs can range up to $22.5 billion. Progress Energy now plans to start Levy 1 in 2021 and Levy 2 about 18 months later. In April 2010, Progress Energy informed its customers that they will see lower bills in 2011 as a direct result of a decision to postpone major construction activities on the Levy County plant until after the licensing progress is completed.7

Shearon Harris, North Carolina (Progress Energy)
The COL application was submitted to the NRC on 19 February 2008.

Progress Energy informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in August 2005 that it intended to submit a COL application for two reactors in its North and South Carolina service area. Plans were based on anticipated base load electricity demand growth in the region. Selection of the Harris site was announced on 23 January 2006. The reactor design will be Westinghouse’s AP 1000. The site is already the location of one Progress-operated reactor and had originally been designed for as many as four reactors. According to Progress, commercial operations would begin no earlier than 2018. Progress will have to obtain a certificate of public convenience from the North Carolina Utilities Commission to build on the site.

William States Lee III, South Carolina (Duke Energy)
The COL Application was submitted to NRC on 13 December 2007.

There are no commercial reactors presently operating at the site. Duke is interested in new construction here to meet growing baseload power demand in nearby market areas. On 4 March 2005, Duke became the first public utility to notify the NRC of intention to apply for a COL. By October 2005, the AP 1000 reactor was selected by Duke, but negotiations with the site owner, Southern Company, continued for about 5 months. Duke and Southern concluded negotiations in March 2006, as Duke took possession of the Cherokee County site, near Gaffney, South Carolina. Southern initially approached this as a joint venture in which it would have the option to own 45 percent (roughly 500 megawatts) of the reactor’s capacity. In June 2006, Duke announced that the plant would be named the William States Lee III Nuclear Power Plant. Southern agreed to relinquish its interests in the plant in May 2007. Duke has indicated that the earliest possible completion date would be in 2016. The project has met some delays, however, including the need for Westinghouse to make design modifications to the AP 1000. The same is true of the Vogtle site, which also selected the AP 1000. According to the NRC website, a revised schedule and target date is anticipated.

The AP 1000 has it's own website:

http://www.ap1000.westinghousenuclear.com/

Nuclear power is a proven, safe, plentiful and clean source of power generation, and Westinghouse Electric Company, the pioneer and global leader in nuclear plant design and construction, is ready with the *AP1000™ pressurized water reactor (PWR). It is the only Generation III+ reactor to receive Design Certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The AP1000, based on the proven performance of Westinghouse-designed PWRs, is an advanced 1154 MWe nuclear power plant that uses the forces of nature and simplicity of design to enhance plant safety and operations and reduce construction costs.

The below case reminded me of the Ashley Turton "accident".

"Smith's car was found against a utility pole on Hwy 72, totally engulfed in flames. Looked like an accident at the beginning."

According to witnesses, she veered into a utility pole when a fire erupted in her car. She was burned beyond recognition. The FBI later determines that gasoline was poured on her clothing before she died in the fire and find that arson was the cause of death.

Katherine Smith
She had been implicated in February in a phony passport scheme said to be related to the September 11 hijackers. One day before she was due in court, she was incinerated in her car after having hit a utility pole. An investigation revealed that the crash was minor and was not the cause of the fire that burned Smith beyond recognition.

Shapiro - Duke Energy - related?

In October 1993 a speech titled "The Derivatives Revolution and the World Financial System", Shapiro doubted that "consolidated regulatory supervision against regulating derivative markets" of "securities firms and their affiliates" was "necessary or appropriate at this time." Shapiro instead suggested that "financial innovation" could be the result of "a more flexible regulatory paradigm." [8]

Schapiro said regulators were still sifting through more than 17 million trades in listed equities in the hour beginning at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on May 6, and she cited the growth of trading in multiple markets over the past few years for the complexity of the probe.

But in some preliminary observations, Schapiro sounded sceptical that a large erroneous trade, the so called "fat finger" scenario, had triggered the brief stock rout.

She gave greater weight to theories that a confluence of events were responsible, but had come to no conclusion.

Dan Turton leaves W.H. for energy company
By CHRIS FRATES |
3/29/11 8:59 PM EDT

White House lobbyist Dan Turton is leaving his administration post to work for the energy company Entergy, which is the second largest generator of nuclear power in the country.

Turton will leave the administration, where he runs point for President Barack Obama in the House of Representatives, and head Entergy’s Washington office. His last day at the White House is Thursday and he starts Friday at Entergy.
...
In the run-up to the 2008 elections, Turton was highly sought after as Washington lobbying shops prepared for a Democratic takeover. Insiders estimated then that Turton could bring home somewhere near $500,000 if he went downtown. He declined to say what he is making in his new job as vice president for federal government affairs.

In his new gig, Turton will represent an $11 billion company that owns and operates electric power plants and is the second largest generator of nuclear energy in the country. The company will benefit from Turton’s insider knowledge as Congress considers whether to change nuclear policy in the wake of the multiple nuclear incidents caused by this month’s devastating Japanese tsunami.

The move comes two months after Turton’s wife, Ashley, was killed in an accidental car fire. Ashley Turton was a lobbyist for Progress Energy and had formerly worked for Gephardt and Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro.
