Apparently, she and her aids were shopping at a local Safeway store, when some gunman ambushed and begin shooting. No word yet, if the gunman was caught. Already, the media is connecting this to the "bombs" in Maryland. . . Now, they are saying there were 12 people shot! The gunman is in custody.

She was among a number of people shot by an unidentified gunman. So far, six others have also died in the sudden attack, according to published reports.

Fox News reported that she'd been shot point-blank in the head. Giffords had been staging a "Congress on Your Corner" event outside a Safeway grocery store. Members of Giffords staff were among those reportedly injured.

The suspect was described by witnesses as a young man in his late teens or early 20s. He has been taken into custody.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department said that up to 12 people were injured in the incident, and a witness told CNN they heard up to 20 gunshots.

Rep. Giffords, 6 others shot dead at Tucson rally

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot to death in Tucson this morning after a public event outside a Safeway grocery store.

National Public Radio reports she was shot in the head.

The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media, NPR reported.

At least 10 other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately known.

Sheriff’s bureau chief Rick Kastigar said 12 people were wounded “some of them greatly.” Ten people were transported to hospital.

The lone gunman is reportedly in custody.

Chief Richard Kastigar with the Pima County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that 12 people were shot at a Gabrielle Gifffords event. The shooting occurred this morning at a Safeway Store near Oracle & Ina.

Gabrielle Giffords was shot. Her condition has not been disclosed by authorities. One shooter is in custody, authorities said.

This is sad, sad news, and I'm going to say a prayer for Rep. Giffords and her family, and the other victims.

As all of you know, the intensity of everything has been building up with the media, the government, the political parties, for months and months and years and years. You know as well as I do that the "right wing" gun advocates were maligned in '92 (Ruby Ridge), '93 (Waco), '95 (OKC), '99 (Columbine) and elsewhere.

This will be no different.

As a newspaper publisher myself, this is getting very "real" very, very quick. We are not safe, but neither are the congressional representatives.

There will be more, and there will be more people who will automatically blame the Tea Parties, the militias, the Second Amendment-ers, etc.

TUCSON – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will host her first “Congress on Your Corner” of the year on Saturday, Jan. 8 at a supermarket in northwest Tucson.

“Congress on Your Corner” allows residents of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District to meet their congresswoman one-on-one and discuss with her any issue, concern or problem involving the federal government.

Giffords has hosted numerous “Congress on Your Corner” events since taking office in January 2007. As in the past, the congresswoman’s staff will be available to assist constituents.

Previous “Congress on Your Corner” events in Tucson, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, and Douglas have attracted between 75 and 150 people.

For the media, “Congress on Your Corner” is an excellent opportunity to view the congresswoman interacting with constituents or ask questions about any topic.

This Saturday’s “Congress Your Corner” comes at the conclusion of the first week of the 112th Congress. Giffords took the oath of office for a third term on Wednesday and on Thursday she participated in a reading of the U.S. Constitution on the floor of the House.

Among the congresswoman’s first official acts this week was a vote for Speaker of the House and the introduction of legislation to cut congressional salaries by 5 percent. Giffords was interviewed about her bill this morning on Fox news.

The Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office told news director Mark Moran the 40-year-old Democrat was killed.

Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up and fired indiscriminately from about four feet away, Michaels said.

Someone definitely should have had this event on a Flipcam or something. Everyone, spider through YouTube and find the footage. I know, know, know someone had to have filmed it.

My guys film EVERYTHING...we're hated because of it. Politicians hate being on YouTube, but it's actually the only "safe" way we have of monitoring them and others who might be crazy.

Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, was reportedly shot and killed today at a public event outside a grocery store. Other reports claim that Rep. Giffords is still alive but in critical condition.

A spokesman for the Pima County sheriff says that at least 12 people were shot. The Tucson Citizen reports that Rep. Giffords was "shot point blank in the head."

Rep. Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, was first elected to the House in 2006. She represents the state's 8th Congressional District.

While there is no hard evidence at this point to suggest that the shooting was politically motivated, Matt Yglesias points out that an anti-Giffords event was held in June with the billing: "Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly."

Rep. Giffords was also on Sarah Palin's "target list."

As noted earlier, a gun was dropped at a Giffords event in 2009, and her office was vandalized in March.
