Spartacus (1960)
« on: September 01, 2010, 03:40:11 am »
I've only seen this one twice - once back in the 80's on VHS where almost half the picture was cut out due to full screen format, and today on blu ray letterbox. I have to say it is much better than I remember it. If you can see it on blu ray by all means check it out. Great acting by all involved: Kirk Douglas, Lawrence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton, Tony Curtis, et al.  Also great camera work and great score by Alex North. More commercial than Kubrick's later films, but a great movie nonetheless. The story of mankind's eternal struggle for freedom against tyranny is as timely as ever.

Here is the powerful last scene. Possible spoiler if you haven't seen the film already and intend to do so at a later time -
