Radicalization in Canada top intelligence priority

Stewart Bell, National Post · Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010

OTTAWA — The townhouse on a quiet Ottawa street had a Mazda parked in the driveway. Neighbours could think of nothing unusual about the man who lived there. Not far away in an apartment building searched by police a Canadian flag hung from a balcony.

The terror suspects arrested in Ottawa on Wednesday are being described as Canadians who were allegedly attracted to al-Qaeda's message of violence.

"This is the capital of Canada and, I mean, we do have troops in Afghanistan," said Alison James, who lives near the townhouse. "So I guess we just live with it."

The case suggests that four years after the RCMP and CSIS broke up the Toronto 18, Canada is still investigating similar groups of extremists who allegedly support al-Qaeda.

This "homegrown Islamist extremism," as CSIS refers to it, is Canada's No. 1 terrorist threat, according to senior intelligence and law-enforcement officials. The term is used to cover not just those who were born in this country, but those who come to Canada without extremist leanings and who develop dangerous intentions while living here.

Be afraid, be very afraid!! ::)

OTTAWA—A third terrorism suspect– one who moonwalked across a Montreal stage during an audition for Canadian Idol – was detained early Thursday, the Star has learned.

Khuram Sher was arrested as part of an RCMP national security investigation, as police continue to investigate a possible cell allegedly plotting to attack targets at home.

Sher told judges on the popular reality show in 2008 that he hailed from Pakistan and was a fan of “hockey, music and acting.”

He sings an off-tune rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” with – as the show’s website describes – some “nifty” dance moves.

Terrorism group planned to make IEDs: RCMP

Suspect trained in IED construction

He said the RCMP investigation, dubbed Project Samosa, found evidence to support the fact one member of the group has also taken training that provided him with the knowledge to construct electronic and explosive devices.

Investigators seized more than 50 electronic circuit boards designed specifically to remotely detonate IEDs, said Therriault.

"This group posed a real and serious threat to the citizens of the National Capital Region and Canada's national security," he said.

Things that make you go hmmmm... seems if they seized physical circuit boards that are designed "specifically" to detonate IEDs, then it could be for real, unless such circuit boards can be used for something else (or don't even actually exist). But the media is tip-toeing so we'll see how this thing plays out.
