Parents told to report adverse reactions from flu vaccines

    * From: AAP
    * April 26, 2010 10:32AM

AUSTRALIA'S chief medical officer is urging medical staff and parents to immediately report any adverse reactions in children to the seasonal flu vaccine.

Professor Jim Bishop has told the ABC he only learned on Sunday of the death of a Brisbane girl 12 hours after she was given the vaccine.

The Queensland Coroner is investigating the death of two-year-old Ashley Epapara, who was found dead in her cot on April 9.
The previous day she and her twin sister were inoculated by the family GP in Brisbane. Her father David Epapara suspects the vaccination had a role in his daughter's death. ``We don't know much about what happened at this stage,'' he told The Australian. ``But it seems too much of a coincidence for a healthy girl, after having this vaccine, to just pass away. It is shocking.''

News of the death came after dozens of babies and small children, mostly in Western Australia, suffered adverse reactions to the seasonal flu vaccine, including fevers and convulsions.

Those cases prompted Professor Bishop to issue an alert on Friday, suspending the seasonal flu jab for children under five.
On Monday, he urged medical staff and parents to ensure all adverse affects were reported.

``We would depend on doctors and parents and others to report, and we'd urge them to,'' he told ABC radio. He said Friday's alert was likely to result in a spike in reported concerns.

``I think the advantage of having an alert go out on Friday ... is that it brings this into sharp effect,'' he said. ``And therefore we anticipate a high level of reporting and we'd encourage people to report.''

The Bad Batch excuse is off the table! Vaccine reactions were from different batches.

Flu vax reactions not from single batch: WHO

ABC News
Updated 6 hours 30 minutes ago

Dozens of children in Queensland and Western Australia suffered fevers, vomiting and convulsions after being immunised.

That has prompted health authorities to temporarily ban the vaccine for those under five.

In Brisbane, a two-year-old girl died a day after receiving the seasonal flu shot.

Ian Barr from the World Health Organisation (WHO) influenza centre says the cases involved several different batches of the vaccine.

"If it was a single batch then you might think that that might be the case," he said.

"If multiple batches are involved then that's less likely I think - but again we still need to wait."

How many of the children who were vaccinated developed a serious bout of the flu -

ScienceDaily reported in May 2009 that a study by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota found that children who got the flu vaccine were three times more likely to to be hospitalized for the flu.  And Dr Russell Blaylock advises in a talk at YouTube from Robodoon,  when the flu vaccine was advocated by the CDC for children in the US, infant deaths from the flu shot up.  Prior to this, infants rarely died from the flu.

Flu jab sick toll passes 250

Updated 10 hours 8 minutes ago

One child is in a critical condition at Princess Margaret Hospital.

(7pm TV News WA)

West Australia's chief health officer says there are now 251 confirmed cases in the state of children aged under five having adverse reactions to flu vaccinations.

Last week the Health Department placed a temporary ban on flu shots for children under five after reports of children getting sick after being vaccinated.

The Department says 55 children have had convulsions after being vaccinated while nearly 200 others have suffered fever and vomiting.

One child is in a serious but stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Chief health officer Dr Tarun Weeramanthri says confirming the number of cases is a significant step forward in the search for the cause of the adverse reactions.

"We'll now be sharing that information with our colleagues from other states and territories. Once that national picture is built up this week we'll know more about whether there is a problem, which areas it is in, what possible causes there are," he said.

Dr Weeramanthri says he is working with other states and territories to determine the scale of the problem.

"We don't have any idea for national figures. We've agreed on a standard way to report the cases nationally. All states and territories are gathering the information very actively and we should be in a position to share that information nationally by the middle of next week," he said.

He says because of the size of the immunisation program, it is likely the vaccinations in question came from several batches.

"We found no evidence of any single batch being the cause of these reactions," he said.

Dr Weeramanthri says it will take time to determine the cause of the problem.

"We don't know yet. First of all we have to work out how much of a problem this is," he said.

"As you know, fever with illness in children is common due to any cause, so there's lots of viruses circulating at any one point in time.

"We also know that fever following vaccination is not uncommon, so what we've done is gather as much information as we can about the numbers of children affected; both overall with any kind of reaction, but also at the more serious end, this group with febrile convulsions."

While immunisation numbers are down, Dr Weeramanthri says he is confident parents will continue to vaccinate their children once the source of the reactions is found.

"I think the public have fantastic support for the immunisation program in Western Australia and the basis of that support is that we communicate with them very clearly the risks and benefits of vaccination in general and for specific programs," he said.

"I think they will be assured that with this program, as soon as any clinical problem or the reports of clinical problems emerged, we acted promptly."

CSL profits from swine flu

Posted Wed Feb 17, 2010 11:27am AEDT

CSL's half-year earnings have swelled after it reaped $160 million from sales of the swine flu vaccine.

The Melbourne-based biotechnology company posted a 23 per cent rise in net profit to $617 million for the first half of the financial year.

That was well above the market's expectations for a profit of between $510 and $547 million dollars.

It says the strength in swine flu vaccine sales was partly offset by a $66 million slide in sales of the cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil.

It is delivering an interim dividend of 35 cents per share, up 17 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

CSL says its full-year net profit is expected to be at the top end of its previous forecasts, of between $970 million and $1.07 billion.

Queensland health officials withheld flu death details

    * Rosanne Barrett and Adam Cresswell
    * From: The Australian
    * April 27, 2010 12:00AM

QUEENSLAND Health officials claimed they were unaware of any deaths related to the seasonal flu vaccine, despite launching an investigation two weeks ago into the death of a two-year-old who was immunised the day before.

As suspicions centred on CSL's Fluvax seasonal flu vaccine as the likely link in more than 250 adverse reactions reported nationwide, alarm over the number of children taken ill after receiving a jab has spread overseas, with the New Zealand government warning doctors to avoid CSL's Australian-made product, and to choose one of two alternative vaccines instead.

Queensland Health has come under increased pressure for its public statements over the death of toddler Ashley Jade Epapara.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer, Jeannette Young, said yesterday the department had ordered an "urgent investigation" on April 9 after media inquiries about a two-year-old who had died shortly after receiving a swine flu vaccination.

On Sunday, Dr Young said: "Until now, neither Queensland Health nor the relevant national body had been advised of, or were aware of, any death allegedly related to a 2010 seasonal flu vaccination in Queensland."

The two-year-old girl was found dead in her cot on April 9, 12 hours after receiving the seasonal flu vaccine.

On the night of her death, Queensland Health Minister Paul Lucas told a television news program children should continue to receive vaccinations.

The circumstances surrounding the child's death are being investigated by the Coroner.

As Australia's adverse events hotline revealed yesterday that its phones were "running hot" with reports of flu jab reactions from parents nationwide, the New Zealand Health Ministry said it had recorded at least three cases of febrile convulsions following vaccination.

In Western Australia, where a potential spike in cases was first spotted, the number of children under five who have suffered fevers after being immunised has now risen to 251.

On Friday, the Wellington ministry said in a statement that all the cases in New Zealand and Western Australia -- at that stage thought to number about 60 -- involved the CSL-made seasonal flu vaccine Fluvax, a claim repeated yesterday by a New Zealand government official.

The statement recommended children at higher risk be given alternative flu vaccines.

In Australia, Chief Medical Officer Jim Bishop ordered the suspension of all seasonal flu vaccines for children under five, pending further investigation.

A spokeswoman for the federal Health Department said Fluvax was believed to be involved in the West Australian reports of reactions.

CSL has contested the claims, saying three rival vaccines are available nationwide and that investigators have yet to discover which vaccine was given to the affected children.

And flu experts have cautioned that the spike in reactions might yet prove to be illusory, or caused by factors unrelated to the vaccine.

Fluvax is the seasonal vaccine CSL distributes every year, offering protection against three strains of the rapidly mutating virus. For the first time, this year's formulation includes swine flu as one of the three strains.

Panvax, CSL's pandemic flu product, which protects against swine flu only, is not linked to the latest alerts and remains available for adults and children older than six months.

Swine flu is expected to account for most cases of seasonal flu in Australia this winter.

Professor Bishop said he had requested hospital records be reviewed to trace which vaccines children had received and whether they had been tested for other infections, which could trigger fever and convulsions.

Western Australia's Chief Health Officer, Tarun Weeramanthri, said it was increasingly unlikely a single adverse batch of vaccine was to blame, due to the number and spread of reactions.

He said doctors and families of the 55 worst-affected children were being contacted, and he expected to have detailed information by mid-week on exactly which vaccine they received.

Dr Weeramanthri confirmed the WA Health Department in February advised doctors who could not obtain child doses to use half an adult dose, but said that was standard practice and he did not believe it was linked to adverse reactions. The 251 affected children were from an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 vaccines.

That's 1 in 200 to 1 in 300!!!

According to the Fluvax insert less than 1 in 1000 and more than 1 in 100 is considered an "uncommon" range of reactions. In other words it is an uncommon event. It is not until you get below 1 in 100 that CSL considers the events common.

Adverse event frequencies are defined as follows: Very common (≥ 1/10), common (≥ 1/100, < 1/10),
uncommon (≥ 1/1,000, < 1/100), rare (≥ 1/10,000, < 1/1,000) and very rare (< 1/10,000).

Flu vaccine death link was known by Queensland Health

    * by Anna Caldwell
    * From: The Courier-Mail
    * April 26, 2010 11:00PM

QUEENSLAND Health assured parents the seasonal flu vaccination was safe despite being warned it may have contributed to the death of a two-year-old Brisbane girl.

Health Minister Paul Lucas and Queensland Health were told of the suspected link on April 9 – the day Ashley Epapara, 2, died.

The girl was found dead in her cot at her family's Mt Gravatt home, in Brisbane's southeast, the morning after she and her twin sister were inoculated by the family GP. Her father says she was a perfectly healthy little girl.

Mr Lucas admitted yesterday he had been asked about the death and had ordered a QH investigation on April 9. Queensland's chief health officer Jeannette Young had previously maintained that QH had never been "advised of, or were aware of" a death "allegedly" relating to this year's seasonal vaccination.

The discrepancy was seized upon by the Opposition, who yesterday accused QH of a "cover up".

"Why wasn't Queensland Health open and vocal about its investigation?" health spokesman Mark McArdle said.

"Why didn't Queensland Health acknowledge and properly investigate the potential link between the shot and the death immediately?

"We are dealing with little children who can't communicate how they are feeling. Hiding the problem has only made parents more fearful."

Flu shots were suspended on Friday for all children under five after dozens in Western Australia suffered convulsions and fevers after inoculation.

Australia's chief medical officer Professor Jim Bishop has ordered hospitals and state medical officers to scour records to uncover bad reactions among children to the seasonal flu vaccine.

This year's version of the seasonal flu vaccine has not been subjected to clinical tests, despite including a swine flu component.

"The seasonal flu vaccines have been used for about 40 years with an incredibly good safety record," Prof Bishop said.

He said the death of Ashley Epapara was now a matter for the coroner.

Dr Young yesterday said in her statement that April 9 checks with the Therapeutic Goods Administration revealed no death notifications.

"Queensland Health is working closely with the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic death," Dr Young said.

"Exposure to last year's swine flu outbreak may have caused children to be more susceptible?!" Um, that's called immunity isn't it???  ???

The swine flu theory behind bad reactions to flu vaccine
29 Apr, 2010 @ 02:43 am AEST

The exposure to last year's swine flu outbreak may have caused children to be more susceptible to experiencing severe reactions that are now manifested through recent influenza vaccinations.

That is one of the theories as to why more than 250 children in WA have been admitted to the hospital for experiencing adverse reactions after being inoculated with the seasonal flu vaccine.

The death of two year-old Ashley Epapara, has also been associated with bad reactions toward the vaccination.

To date, a total of 55 children had been reported to experience febrile convulsions after getting vaccinated while an additional 196 suffered less serious reactions such as fever and vomiting.

According to an infectious diseases expert at the Australian National University, Professor Peter Collignon, a possible theory could be that the children's exposure to swine flu last year could have made their immune system to react aggressively to an injected dose of the vaccine that includes the strain of H1N1.

However, Professor Terry Nolan of the University of Melbourne who conducted the research into children's reactions to swine flu vaccine last year, said the theory seemed unlikely as the children did not exhibit more severe reactions to the second of the two injections given last year.

The deputy director of the National Centre for Immunization Research and Surveillance, Kristine Macartney said more reactions were reported in Western Australia because it was the only state to have a policy of immunizing all children under five with the seasonal flu vaccine.

"Western Australia are immunizing many more young children than other states and territories, where children are only recommended to have the vaccine if they are in a high-risk group," she said.

After receiving immunization, she observed that up to 40 per cent of children will develop elevated temperature and 3 per cent of children will have febrile convulsions at some stage.

Senior research fellow at the centre, Julie Leask, who specializes on social responses to immunization, said it was perfectly understandable that parents and the medical community were worried about the vaccine's undesirable side effects.

'Flu jab death': AMAQ warns against making doctor a scapegoat
COURTNEY TRENWITH
April 28, 2010 - 9:49AM

The Queensland branch of the Australian Medical Association has warned against making a Brisbane doctor a scapegoat in the death of a toddler who had received the seasonal flu vaccine.

Two-year-old Ashley Epapara was found dead in her cot on April 9, a day after she and her twin sister were given the flu shot by private general practitioner Dr Amir Eskandari.

The state's chief medical officer Dr Jeannette Young yesterday referred Dr Eskandari to the Medical Board of Queensland for not reporting the girl's suspected adverse reaction to the vaccine, as required by law.
Advertisement: Story continues below

AMA Queensland president Dr Mason Stevenson said focus needed to remain on determining the cause of death and not the doctor's conduct.

"Let's resolve the issue about how this child died because the parents need closure," Dr Stevenson said.

"Secondly we all need to know if [there is], or if there's not, a link with the seasonal flu vaccine."

Infectious diseases expert from the Australian National University, Professor Peter Collignon, says early tests showed there were problems with the vaccine.

The early warning signs were in the original studies by the vaccine manufacturer, CSL, in children, that was published in January in a journal called JAMA and this looked at about 370 children who were vaccinated last October with the swine flu vaccine.

And what was surprising is particularly young children under the age of three. About 35 per cent of those developed a fever when they were given the lower dose of the vaccine.

He has called on the government to conduct more stringent testing.

"I think we needed to do a better job than what has been done with this vaccine so that we keep the confidence in the public," Professor Collignon told ABC Radio.

Dr Eskandari has welcomed the Medical Board review, saying he did nothing wrong.

He did not report the death because Ashley seemed fine after receiving the shot, and he followed strict procedure before giving the vaccine, he said.

He believed people should wait for further results before jumping to conclusions.

"You've got to get consent before any injection. Everything was under control and I don't know exactly what happened," he told reporters outside his Mt Gravatt practice.

Initial results of an autopsy released yesterday found there was no sign the seasonal flu vaccine was to blame for Ashley's death. Further tests will be carried out.

This season's flu shot has been linked to adverse reactions in scores of children, mostly in Western Australia and Queensland.

Federal authorities have suspended the vaccine for children under five, however they are still urging older people, particularly those in risk groups, to continue to be inoculated.

The Queensland coroner is investigating the cause of Ashley's death.

CSL Inc. Pediatric Flu Vaccine Linked to Severe Reactions in Australia

Date Published: Friday, April 23rd, 2010
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

CSL Inc. has stop distribution of its pediatric flu vaccine in Australia after some children who had received it suffered adverse reactions. CSL is one of the world’s largest influenza vaccine manufacturers.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the injection at the center of the concern was a seasonal vaccine that immunized children against three influenza strains, including the swine flu.

Most of the adverse reactions were reported in Western Australia, where about 60 children suffered fevers and convulsions within 12 hours of being injected. Incidents were also reported in Queensland and South Australia.

According to Australian media reports, the country’s chief medical officer, Jim Bishop, said CSL had been contacted to determine which batches had been sent to Western Australia. Samples had been obtained to test for abnormalities. For now, the vaccine has been banned in Australia for children under five.

Bishop is describing the ban as a precautionary measure. “Until it can be established what factors are causing the apparent rise in fevers in some children I am writing to all immunization providers to advise them not to administer seasonal flu vaccine to all children under five,” he said.

Possible causes for the reactions could be a contaminant in the vaccine, or the circulation of a virus, which when combined with the vaccine, could cause the reported reactions.

The Australian is reporting that clinical tests were never carried out on this particular vaccine, which was a first-time combination of seasonal flu with Panvax, a vaccine against the H1N1 strain. Australia was the first country to use this type of vaccine, the report said. Panvax was tested on 400 children before its release last year, but the combined shot was not subjected to any clinical trials.

According to The Wall Street Journal, CSL said in a statement that it was working with health authorities to investigate the problem. “The company takes the safety and quality of its products seriously and will provide more information as soon as possible,” it said.

And the free market has spoken!

CSL shares catch $2.4bn chill over flu vaccine fears

    * Sara Rich
    * From: The Australian
    * April 28, 2010 12:00AM

CSL shares plunged yesterday amid ongoing suspicion that this season's influenza vaccination is potentially dangerous for children and could be linked to hundreds of adverse reactions nationwide.

The blood products and vaccines maker's share price fell $1.44, or 4.2 per cent, to close at $32.50, taking its losses in two sessions to $2.4 billion in market value.

On Friday the shares fell 7.3 per cent. That fall was attributed to Baxter International, one of CSL's main US rivals, cutting its annual profit forecast. The entire plasma industry was punished as a result of Baxter's downgrade amid concerns that the supply of plasma treatments currently outweighed demand.

Tyndall head of research Roger Collison said with this now largely priced into CSL shares after Friday's fall, yesterday's decline would have been a "knee-jerk" reaction to negative attention surrounding the flu vaccine, which doctors have been told to stop giving to children.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

However, he feels it could be an overreaction from an investment perspective as Australian flu vaccine accounts for only about 1 per cent of the company's total earnings.

"But it does emphasise people see this as a significant event -- it probably means not only that babies won't be vaccinated but, people being people, there will be some that say if it is not good enough for babies it is not good enough for me," Mr Collison said.

"So the whole flu season will be disrupted as a result."

Deutsche Bank analyst David Low does not expect the issue to have a material impact on CSL's long-term share price.

"This is only going to have a material impact on CSL's share price or profitability if it becomes an issue in the northern hemisphere, and CSL and the authorities have ample time before the manufacture of northern hemisphere flu vaccine will begin," he said.

Australian health authorities confirmed yesterday that there had been a spike in the number of children suffering adverse reactions to seasonal flu vaccine.

However, they said it was too early to link the vaccine to the death of two-year-old Ashley Epapara, who was found dead in her Brisbane home on April 9, 12 hours after being vaccinated.

Three manufacturers, including CSL, supply Queensland's flu vaccines, which immunise children against three flu strains, including swine flu.

CSL said it was co-operating with Australian health authorities as they tried to determine whether the problem was a nationwide one or was limited to Western Australia and Queensland.

Officials hide flu vaccination  stats

THE number of South Australian children who have had adverse reactions to the seasonal flu vaccination will remain a secret.

SA Health confirmed one serious adverse reaction earlier this week, and says it has handed other data over to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

But it declined to answer questions about how many adverse reactions have been reported. A spokesman said they had notified the TGA of possible reactions.

The vaccine is suspected to have caused high fevers and convulsions in up to 300 children around the nation.

In Queensland – where a two-yearold girl died after being vaccinated – authorities say only 13 of 95 suspected cases can be put down to the vaccine.

In Western Australia, authorities say more than 250 children became sick after being immunised. Victorian health officials have confirmed a ‘‘handful’’ of cases.

SA Health confirmed one serious adverse reaction earlier this week, and says they have handed other data over to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

They declined to answer questions about how many adverse reactions have been reported but a spokesman said they have notified the TGA of possible reactions.

‘‘This information, along with similar data from all the states, is being collated by the TGA and will be examined as part of the investigation into the number of confirmed adverse reactions to the seasonal flu shot in children aged five and under,’’ he said.

The TGA says it cannot give any specifics until it gets more information and advice. Seasonal flu vaccinations for children under five were suspended last week.

Professor Nikolai Petrovsky is the director of Vaxine, based at Flinders University, and the developer of a rival vaccine.

He says there have definitely been adverse reactions in SA, and warns that swine flu vaccinations are not free from reactions either. He wants an inquiry into the relationship between the Federal Government and CSL, which he says is driving the ongoing use of ‘‘old’’ technology.

‘‘They’re trying to convince you it’s perfectly reasonable to stick with a 50-year-old vaccine technology despite massive advances in the technology in the meantime which make it more effective, safer, more reliable,’’ he said.

A Department of Health and Ageing spokeswoman said all decisions were evidence based, and that any conflict of interest issues were managed.

Opposition health spokesman Duncan McFetridge said people had a right to know the risks.

WHO dubious about flu jab

THE World Health Organisation initially baulked at approving the three-in-one flu shot rubber-stamped by Australian authorities last year.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration cited WHO advice when it approved the seasonal flu vaccine that was suspended last Friday after a spike in the numbers of children suffering high fevers and febrile convulsions after vaccination.

But the WHO recommendation, accessed via a link on the TGA website, reveals it had yet to decide whether the H1N1 swine flu strain should be mixed with two seasonal flu strains in a one-shot vaccine to cover all three types of flu.

"At this time, WHO is not in a position to advise whether there should be one trivalent influenza vaccine containing all three viruses, or whether there should be separate vaccines for pandemic and seasonal influenza," the WHO advice, dated September 23 last year, states.

"WHO will be in a position to provide guidance on this issue after the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts meets in late October and deliberates on this issue."

The TGA's Australian Influenza Advisory Committee met on October 2 - three weeks before the SAGE deliberations in Switzerland - and approved the world-first three-in-one combination now suspended for use in children aged five and under.

SAGE eventually approved the use of either a three-in-one shot, or separate injections of the swine flu vaccine and a two-in-one seasonal flu shot, "subject to national needs".

It said southern hemisphere countries that chose the trivalent vaccine - such as Australia - should be "encouraged" to donate any surplus swine flu vaccine to the WHO.

SAGE also noted that "little immunogenicity data are currently available" for swine flu vaccines used in children aged from six months to 10 years.

"SAGE recognises there is no indication at this stage that unusual adverse reactions are being observed," it said in a summary of its October meeting.

"In spite of these preliminary reassuring results, continued vigilance and regular evaluation by health authorities are needed."

Australian authorities are urgently investigating side effects, including febrile convulsions and fever, in more than 200 children since the three-in-one flu shot was rolled out five weeks ago.

A Perth toddler who received the vaccine is in intensive care, and Queensland's Coroner is investigating the death of a two-year-old girl who died hours after her seasonal flu shot on April 8.

The federal Health Department's Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, which is spearheading the investigation, said yesterday it still had no idea whether the number of adverse reactions was abnormal.

TAGI chairman Terry Nolan revealed last night the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register did not appear to be up to date. "We still have concerns about the accuracy of the data," Professor Nolan said.

He said there was "no reason to think" the fevers were being triggered by the first-time inclusion of the swine flu strain in the seasonal jab.

"The rest of the world is very interested in whether or not there is something going on here," Professor Nolan added.

South Australian officials 'hiding' flu vaccination statistics

HEALTH authorities today are expected to reveal how many children have suffered adverse reactions from flu vaccinations across the country.

In Queensland - where a two-year-old girl died after having the vaccination - authorities say only 13 of 95 suspected cases can be put down to the vaccine.

In Western Australia, authorities say more than 250 children became sick after being immunised. Victorian health officials have confirmed a "handful" of cases.

Residue in flu jab causing kids' reactions: scientist

GRAEME O'NEILL
May 2, 2010

http://www.theage.com.au/national/residue-in-flu-jab-causing-kids-reactions-scientist-20100501-u0dd.html

A LEADING researcher claims to have identified why the seasonal flu vaccine is causing an outbreak of adverse reactions in children, including high temperatures, fits and convulsions. Professor Nikolai Petrovsky, a Flinders University immunologist, says an experiment he carried out indicates that large amounts of viral genetic residue created by the vaccine's manufacture were overloading infants' immune systems.

The experiment left him in "absolutely no doubt" that high levels of the residue in the form of RNA (the viruses' genetic blueprint) were the cause. Professor Petrovsky's claims were supported by Melbourne immunologist Professor Bryan Williams, whose team at the Monash Institute of Medical Research is at the forefront of research into how the immune system detects infection.

"I was planning to design my own experiment to test this, before I heard about Professor Petrovsky's result," he said.

This year's vaccine contains more RNA than previous years, because it consists of several inactivated seasonal strains of influenza virus combined with the pandemic H1N1 swine flu strain. Professor Petrovsky says RNA extracted from the flu vaccine triggered an "enormous reaction" in human immune-system cells in vitro.

Professor Petrovsky is founder and chief executive of Vaccine Limited, which has developed a system for producing vaccines in genetically modified insect cells without using viruses themselves.

The method does not produce genetic residue.

Professor Petrovsky said it was ''amazing that the regulatory system still doesn't require manufacturers like CSL to measure the amount of contaminating RNA, despite 50 years of data showing that RNA levels can vary greatly from vaccine to vaccine''.

''It's a nonsensical way to make a reliable product for human medical use,'' he said.

A CSL spokesman declined to respond.

Five years ago Carol Sledz, a graduate researcher in Professor Williams' research group, published a paper in Nature Cell Biology reporting that short RNA molecules could trigger the innate immune response in mammals. When the RNA molecules activate the receptors, the cells produce interferons, which cause a protective fever and an elevated temperature that helps to destroy viruses and TNF-alpha, which drives a cascade of inflammatory reactions.

These are the symptoms seen in the children who have suffered adverse reactions to the seasonal flu vaccine. In the early years, fever and high temperatures can cause mental confusion and convulsions.

Professor Petrovsky says RNA-digesting enzymes degrade RNA residues in some flu vaccines, but CSL's vaccines consistently rank near the highest for RNA.

56% of doctors, nurses and other staff do not intend to get the swine flu vaccine this year!

Queensland hospital staff were concerned about swine flu vaccine side-effects

HEALTH professionals shunned the swine flu injection at the height of the pandemic because of fears of its side-effects, a study at a Queensland hospital shows.

The study result has shocked health experts who say staff at the major regional Queensland hospital were at the frontline of the pandemic and may have put themselves and patients at grave risk.

Last year, H1N1, or human swine flu, caused 191 deaths nationwide, including 41 in Queensland.

This year, Australia is tipped to avoid a horror flu season, with 510 notifications of swine flu to Queensland Health so far this year, compared with 7700 at the height of the global pandemic last year.

The research at a regional Queensland hospital revealed just 44 per cent of the 252 doctors, nurses and other staff interviewed said they intended to have the pandemic vaccine. One-quarter said they would not be vaccinated, and 31 per cent were undecided.

Swine flu a concern for health officials: Authorities urge people to get vaccinations

16 Aug, 2010 08:58 AM

WINTER is almost over and swine flu seems to many like a panic which belonged to last year, but local health authorities are warning people to be on their guard.

Hunter New England Health said it’s important for residents to protect themselves against Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1).

Public Health physician David Durrheim said outbreaks due to the H1N1 virus will continue to occur, particularly during the peak influenza period of winter and spring.

“Throughout NSW there have recently been reports of severe cases of influenza due to H1N1 which should serve as a warning to people not to become complacent about taking precautions against influenza despite the pandemic coming to an end,” Dr Durrheim said.

“The best way to prevent getting the flu is to get vaccinated, especially if you are at risk of severe disease or care for people who are at risk.”

Those people who are considered at risk of severe disease include those who are pregnant, have an underlying medical condition such as heart and lung disease; cancer, HIV, asthma or diabetes; are morbidly obese or are Aboriginal.
