John Major Elected a President of Chatham House
31 July 2009
The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH has been elected as a President of Chatham House by members at this year's Annual General Meeting.

Sir John is one of only a handful of politicians to have held all three of the great offices of state - Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary. He takes over from Lord Hurd of Westwell who is stepping down as his term of office has come to an end.

Sir John becomes one of three Presidents, drawn from each of the major UK political parties to reflect our political neutrality and independence. Lord Ashdown of Norton sub-Hamden and Lord Robertson of Port Ellen are Chatham House's other Presidents.

Notes to editors
This year's Chatham House Annual General Meeting took place on Tuesday 28 July 2009 and members voted unanimously to elect The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH as a President.

At the same meeting Sir Roderic Lyne was selected as Deputy Chairman replacing Sir Brian Crowe who stepped down at the end of his term of office.

Chatham launches health security center
Published: March. 11, 2009 at 7:35 PM
LONDON, March 11 (UPI) -- London-based think tank Chatham House announced a venture to strengthen international security with a new center focused on global health concerns.

The non-profit, non-governmental organization Tuesday announced the formal launch of its new Center on Global Health Security, Chatham House reported.

According to a release, the center will conduct research and develop policy initiatives, among other objectives aimed at international security through its links to global health.

The Center on Global Health Security will be directed by David Heymann, the World Health Organization assistant director general for health security and environment.

"Our new Center on Global Health Security will explore the links between the broad, but universal, goals of improving and strengthening health worldwide and raising levels of overall international security and prosperity," Heymann said in the release.

the aftermath of the BAE scandal - Merger of UDI with BAE. Who runs UDI?  Carlucci . UDI has a base in Pennslyvannia where Frank Carlucci is from.

I was working on something related and it seem like this should be in this thread . That is the aftermath of the BAE scandal if there was one... So here is this merger of UDI with BAE. Who runs UDI? and who is Doug Coffey? UDI has a base in Pennslyvannia where Frank Carlucci is from.

I am working on a connection to the Caroline Coffey murder. Her father is Michael Coffey. I am trying find out if there is a relationship between Michael Coffey and Doug Coffey.....

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2007_10/012344.php
Doug Coffey [NOW] is the Head of Communications, Land & Armaments, for BAE Systems, the Bradley IFV's manufacturer that TNR wouldn't name.

http://www.counterpunch.org/mazur01152005.html

Carlucci's Pennsylvania contacts would eventually come in handy in business dealings as Chairman of Carlyle. He was Carlyle's point man in acquiring Harrisburg-based Harsco's defense division, which became United Defense. United Defense has supplied a stream of combat vehicles and support weapons to the US war in Iraq, although Carlyle has now sold off its shares in the defense company, partly to save itself from mounting criticism from investors, like the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association as well as the media.(Click here: HOW BUSH GOT BOUNCED FROM CARLYLE BOARD - Suzan Mazur, Progressive Review.) http://prorev.com/bushcarlyle.htm

At the time of Carlyle's acquisition, a key member of Harsco's Executive, Management Development and Corporate Governance committees was Andrew Sordoni III, Chairman of Sordoni Construction, one of the companies that rebuilt Wyoming Seminary after the flood. Andrew Sordoni is also a former Pennsylvania Secretary of Commerce. Andrew's brother, George Sordoni, is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wyoming Seminary. Carlucci also served on the Board of Trustees for a period of time and Frank Carlucci IV now serves on Seminary's President's Council.

It is a small world. And even though northeastern Pennsylvania blizzards are rare these days, tracks in the snow there still get covered up pretty quickly . . .

UDI is "owned" by Frank C. Carlucci who "owns" the Carlyle Group...

Quote
Carlyle bought Arlington, Va.-based United Defense LP in October of 1997 for $850 million.

About the time the Carlyle Group bought United Defense, the United Defense LP Employees Political Action Committee registered with the Federal Election Commission. Since then, that committee has contributed more than $300,000 to several dozen legislators who have been key supporters of the Crusader and other Pentagon weapon systems that United Defense supplies.

Defense firms to merge - $4 billion deal joins British giant BAE, Bradley maker UDI

Tuesday, March 8, 2005
United Defense Industries Inc., the maker of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, has agreed to merge with British defense firm BAE Systems in a $4 billion deal, the two companies announced Monday.

Shares for UDI, which has more than 1,000 employees in the Bay Area, rose more than 25 percent to $73.35 after the merger plans were made public.

Under the cash agreement, BAE's North America subsidiary will pay $3.97 billion for the Arlington, Va., company. It will also assume a net debt of $218 million.

UDI Spokesman Doug Coffey said no layoffs are expected from the deal, which must still be approved by federal regulators and both companies' shareholders.

UDI employs about 8,000 people in 25 locations in the United States and Sweden. The company has about 900 employees in Santa Clara and 175 in San Francisco. "At this point, we don't see any impact," Coffey said. "We expect that the business out there will continue to work on projects."

UDI is best known as the maker of ground combat vehicles for the U.S. armed forces, including the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The company's Santa Clara operation is focused mainly on research and development. It also operates a dry dock in San Francisco.

BAE, Great Britain's largest defense and aerospace company, designs and manufactures different military vehicles.

Analyst Patrick McCarthy of Friedman Billings Ramsey Group Inc. said he thinks the deal will benefit shareholders of both firms.

UDI and BAE had been competitors in the lucrative market for military weapons systems, which has grown as a result of the war on terror and the campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.  UDI reported revenue of $2.3 billion in 2004, and is one of the nation's major defense contractors.

BAE, based in London, has more than 90,000 employees and has customers in about 130 countries, including the United States.

Thanks, more information on "Chatham House",  the RIIA:

(Free Download, very important book. Do not miss it!!!)

John D. Christian from New Zealand writes in his book
"Hidden Secrets on the Alpha course"

The Royal Institute of International Affairs (RIIA) (
((NOW = CHATHAM HOUSE LONDON; directly under the British Order of the Garter, where HRH Queen Elizabeth II is No. 1 and HRH Prince Charles of Wales is No. 2)))

Like the Rhodes Scholarship Program and many other powerful British Roundtable Brotherhood institutions, the RIIA is undergoing radical reform and modernization to suppress criticism and make it much more difficult to recognise in the future.

From 1st September 2004, the RIIA changed its’ name to Chatham House.

Presidents for 2004-2005 were: The Rt. Hon. Lord Hurd of Westwell, The Rt. Hon. Lord Robertson of Port Allen (formerly NATO Secretary General) and The Rt. Hon. Baroness Williams of Crosby

To illustrate the staggering global power of the RIIA (from late 2004 called Chatham House), here are just some of its many sub-branches:
· Council of Foreign Relations (USA)
· Trilateral Commission (USA)
· Australian Institute of International Affairs
· Canadian Institute of International Affairs
· Danish Institute of International Affairs
· Hungarian Institute of International Affairs
· Institute of International Affairs Italy
· Japan Institute of International Affairs
· Institute of International Affairs Prague
· Netherlands Institute of International Affairs
· Norwegian Institute of International Affairs
· South African Institute of International Affairs
· Swedish Institute of International Affairs

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Trilateralism/Bilderberg.html
...
Bodies like the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); the British Royal Institute for International Affairs, commonly known as "Chatham House"; and transnational counterparts like Bilderberg and the Trilateral Commission play a crucial role in formulating policy directions, molding establishment consensus, and even testing for likely opposition.

These institutions propagate the resulting policy positions throughout their network of authoritative channels (university publications, public officials, forums, etc.) setting the limits of respectable foreign policy debate. How well or poorly this elite apparatus works can be evaluated by considering postwar U.S. policy toward Europe and by assessing the role of Bilderberg in pushing Western Europe toward closer regional unification and toward deeper alliance with the United States and Canada...

HEALTH AND BEAUTY CLOSE-UP-20 June 2008-BIO and Battelle Reports State-By-State Analysis of Bioscience Trends(C)2008 - CloseUpMedia - [email protected]

The Nation's bioscience industry continues to grow as states and regions vie to attract high-wage jobs, according to a study released by  Battelle and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

The study, Technology, Talent and Capital: State Bioscience Initiatives 2008, presents data on national, state and metropolitan bioscience employment and growth trends during 2001 to 2006. The study also examines a series of additional key performance metrics and describes state policies and programs designed to accelerate the growth of the biosciences. The report has been produced from the most current and comparable annual data available.

According to a release, total U.S. employment in the biosciences reached 1.3 million in 2006, up from 1.2 million in 2004, led by strong growth in the research, testing and medical lab subsector, which experienced a 17.8 percent increase in employment and a 32.7 percent increase in establishments between 2001 and 2006. Indirect and induced employment from the bioscience industry totals an additional 6.2 million jobs spread throughout the remainder of the economy. Together, these direct, indirect and induced jobs account for a total employment impact of 7.5 million jobs.

The bioscience sector is truly coming of age with new discoveries finding their way into new applications and products leading to new medical treatments, new sources of energy, and new industrial products made out of bio-based materials, said Jim Greenwood, President and CEO of BIO. This has led to the growth of clusters of bioscience firms focused on specialized niches throughout the 50 states and Puerto Rico.

The study and individual profiles of the 50 states and Puerto Rico are available on the BIO website at bio.org/local/battelle2008 .

Battelle is the world's largest non-profit independent research and development organization, providing solutions to the world's most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management, National Security, Energy Technology, and Health and Life Sciences

BIO represents more than 1,200 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations.

As I have been alluding BIO.org is a MIC - RIIA - Chatham House front group...
and they got a real boost from the Anthrax Attacks in 2001:

ON THE FRONT LINE.  The Biotechnology Industry Organization, which recently formed a biodefense task force, estimates that nearly two dozen companies are involved in the development of biodefense vaccines and therapeutics. With new funding totaling $8.4 million, Advanced Biosystems, a subsidiary of Alexandria (Va.)-based Hadron Corp., is exploring ways to stimulate production of cellular secretions called cytokines, which form the body's first line of defense against invaders by kicking the immune system into a state of high alert.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY CLOSE-UP-20 June 2008-Schwarzenegger, Venter Headline at BIO International Convention(C)2008 - CloseUpMedia - [email protected]

Day two of the 2008 Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) Convention attracted the biggest names in biotech along with public officials
who highlighted the day's top issues, organizers reported.

The global event for biotechnology runs through Friday, June 20. More than one third of this year's attendees are international, representing more than 70 different countries.

In a release, organizer noted that highlights from the day include:

- Keynote Speakers:

- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (Calif.) discussed California's biotech revolution which, in 2008, will be donating $3 billion to stem cell research. Gov. Schwarzenegger also discussed his father-in-law Sargent Shriver's battle with Alzheimer's disease, stating I've witnessed the disease first hand, along with millions of others and know that changes need to be made. - J. Craig Venter, PhD, Founder, Chairman and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute discussed From Reading & Writing the Genetic Code and noted there are not enough scientists on the planet to study genes.- Super Sessions:- The Burrill State-of-the-Industry Report presented by Steven G. Burrill, CEO of Burrill and Company, highlighted where health care will be in the year 2020. Burrill's prediction

more of an emphasis on the wellness of society rather than sickness. This will be achieved by implementing genetic screening to understand diseases on a biochemistry level.- Building on Success: Ernst & Young's Global Biotechnology Report 2008 presented by co-editors and leaders in the biotechnology industry Glen Giovannetti and Gautam Jaggi discussed three key drivers that will transform the drug industry and compel it to fundamentally reinvent its business models.

-Press Conferences:- The Orphan Drug Act: 25 Years of Innovation highlighted stories from multiple perspectives: patient, advocacy community, corporate, policymaker and government agency.

- Battelle's State-By-State Analysis of Bioscience Trends highlighted national, state and metropolitan bioscience employment growth trends during 2001 to 2006. The total U.S. employment in the biosciences reached 1.3 million in 2006, up from 1.2 million in 2004.

- The benefits of genetically engineered food animals were shared by the authors of a paper release on the topic. Speakers emphasized the need for a regulatory framework to support robust development of genetically engineered food animals.

The BIO International Convention helps to support the association's programs and initiatives. BIO works throughout the year to create a policy environment that enables the industry to continue to fulfill its vision of bettering the world through biotechnology innovation.

Interesting I found these "war game" simulations
" This wargame was played in private by leading figures under Chatham House "

About Simulstrat

Simulstrat was established at King’s College London to supply strategic wargames and simulations to global business, government and international agencies.

http://www.simulstrat.com/site/simulations.php?catId=54

Swine Flu Contingency Wargame

Objectives
1. To test plans and prepare continuity teams as final preparation before activation and deployment.
2. To test ability to manage a blended threat with flu pandemic combining with recession to cause further shocks to markets and financial systems.

Duration & Format
One day game based on a flexible scenario using key variables for clinical attack rate, mortality and absenteeism decided in conjunction with clients.

Background
In 2006 Simulstrat developed a methodology to test the response of the NHS, pharmaceutical and biotech industries and health supply chain to pandemic flu. This wargame was played in private by leading figures under Chatham House. With the outbreak of the current flu crisis, the Government and the World Health Organisation are advising companies and organizations to test their business continuity and resilience plans. Simulstrat’s close links to leading academic figures at King’s College London makes it ideally placed to provide external validation and advice to guarantee the robustness of your planning.

Scenario
An example of a scenario that could underpin the game is shown below.  The key variables in the model can be quickly adapted to specific customers' wishes.  The game is specifically designed to test the ability to cope with the additional pressures caused by a combined threat (flu pandemic and market shock).

Why test?

Managing a campaign on two fronts is a severe test of management and leadership that should be rehearsed.  Having well developed plans is obviously an important but most plans are generic and often break down during live implementation. As the military strategist von Moltke observed – ‘No plan survives first contact with the enemy’. As a potential crisis develops, therefore, it is essential to test the robustness of the plan and ensure it is aimed at the specific target being faced, not some generic threat.

Moreover, even with the most robust of plans, success is dependent on individuals putting the plan into operation and making the right decisions at the right time. Establishing effective team working and crisis decision making can only be done through testing and rehearsal. A relatively small investment at this stage of the flu crisis to test your plan could prevent major losses and difficulties if the crisis escalates. Using an independent specialist company like Simulstrat provides important external validation to key stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers, creditors, insurers, shareholders, regulators) that every possible step has been taken to minimise the impact of the flu pandemic.

What to test?
Simulstrat will provide a bespoke business wargame customised to your organisation that will test the robustness of your contingency plans for business continuity both during and after a pandemic of swine flu.

This will ensure that your organisation is able to maintain its operations and systems in the face of a global flu pandemic and also be able to make a rapid and sustainable recovery after the event – a critical phase often neglected in planning.

The game is based on proven wargaming methodology and a scenario that has already been successfully used in a high level planning meeting on pandemic flu.

How to test?
The game will be played in one day and will be based on testing the organisation’s existing Flu Pandemic Contingency Plan. Key staff will play the roles identified in the organisation’s plan and also the roles of external suppliers, shareholders, customers and others who affect the organisation’s business.

Key stress points to be tested in the pandemic phase will include responses to minimise absenteeism, effects of breakdowns in external infrastructure, the importance of effective communications and the need for regulatory relief. In the post- pandemic recovery phase the scenario will enable organisations to explore issues such as the consequences of the pandemic on staff morale, retaining staff and operating in the new economic and financial context.

Simulstrat will provide:
A wargame with two moves of play, including the following:
All materials covering the scenario of the Swine flu outbreak, progressing from WHO phase 4 to phase 6 global pandemic ( as described in the attached diagram)
Briefings for all the players
All materials covering the scenario of the recovery phase from the pandemic ( shown below)
Injects to test response to external shocks
A plenary session at the end of the game to debrief players and highlight lessons learnt
Data capture forms to record and document findings
Expert Simulstrat consultants to run and control all stages of the event (credentials below)

When should this be played?
At WHO level 5 or 6.  Clinical experts are also advising that preparations should be made for second and third waves which would emerge in the Autumn.

Who should play this wargame?
The model for this wargame is relevant for private and public sector organisations to test and validate their pandemic flu plans
. Simulstrat’s methodology enables key managers and decision makers in your business to test and rehearse their skills in a dynamic wargame environment.

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5
