California License Plates May Go Digital

California drivers may soon come bumper to bumper with the latest product of the digital age: ad-blaring license plates.

State lawmakers are considering a bill allowing the state to begin researching the use of electronic license plates for vehicles.

The device would mimic a standard license plate when the vehicle is moving but would switch to digital messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds in traffic or at a red light.

In emergencies, the plates could be used to broadcast Amber Alerts or traffic information.

The author of SB1453 says California would be the first state to implement such technology if it decides to adopt the plates on a large scale.

Supporters say license-plate advertising could generate much-needed revenue in a state facing a $19 billion deficit.

It would also allow constant monitoring of the vehicle.

Yes, because high tech license plates cannot possibly cost more than typical plastic or metal license plates, even with additional ad revenue streams coming in to supplement the cost AND generate revenue. I should also mention...revenue..as it relates to a traffic involved service/ requirement? F you to all the cops and supervisors who argued that traffic and license enforcement had nothing to do with revenue. fascist phucks. This is proof that the two are not mutually exclusive.

On a funnier note; when I read the title, I thought they were going to go for a barcode like plate like they had on Back to the Future...

Every time I think the insanity must surely end, they kick it up a notch.

Why lay off some of their bloated bureaucracy and trim overly generous salaries & pension plans when they can introduce a new, unaccountable, corporate-controlled layer to the control grid?

Just remember, as goes California, so goes the nation.
