Title: Underground Bases and Tunnels links - Richard Sauder
Post by: TahoeBlue on January 13, 2010, 09:17:47 pm
Hidden in Plain Sight: Beyond the X-Files
by Richard Sauder, Ph.D.
Underwater and Underground Bases
This is the explosive sequel to Underground Bases and Tunnels: What is the Government Trying to Hide? Here, Dr. Sauder lays out the amazing evidence and government paper trail for constructing huge, manned bases offshore, in mid-ocean, deep beneath the sea floor. Bases big enough to secretly dock submarines! Official U.S. Navy documents and other hard evidence raise many questions about what really lies 20,000 leagues beneath the sea. Many UFOs have been seen coming and going from the world's oceans, seas, and lakes, implying the existence of secret underwater bases.

Underground Bases and Tunnels: What is the Government Trying to Hide?
Unquestionably one of the truely original studies in modern alternative scholarship. Go behind the scenes into little-known corners of the public record and discover how corporate America has worked hand-in-glove with the Pentagon for decades -- dreaming about, planning, and actually constructing secret underground bases. And newly-uncovered information indicates that the strangeness continues with bizarre, high-tech gadgets like portable, hand-held surgical lasers and injectable electronic IDs as small as a grain of rice.

Deep Underground Military Bases (D.U.M.Bs)

The pictures contained in this video are a collection from a collaborated group of anonymous hackers and personal researchers, I therefore cannot confirm the legitimacy of ALL of the pictures within... however, MANY of the pictures are legitimate photo's of actual D.U.M.B's and the diggers used to make them. The objective of this video is to bring this subject into the open and to show that the technology exists as do the facilities... and we're the ones paying for it! /nIMPORTANT ! PLEASE READ ! In order to protect these facilities from a civilian takeover the government and military have been going to extreme lengths to arm not only themselves but also the MANY foreign troops they have already stationed here. This is to combat US !!! They are expecting us to rebel, an engineered civil war, and they have been very busy preparing for it! Guess where your confiscated/turned in weapons really go...  (

One million sq. ft. underground facility

Photo of United States Air Force tunnel boring machine at Little Skull Mountain, Nevada, USA, December 1982. There are many rumors of secret military tunnels in the United States. If the rumors are true, machines such as the one shown here are used to make the tunnels. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy.)

Tunneling to China:

On the German-Chinese Esplanade in Wuhan, the technology and market leader in mechanized tunnelling presents examples of innovative high-performance technology for the construction of transport and supply tunnels under the motto “Sustainable Solutions”.

Wuhan, China / Schwanau, Germany, October 23, 2009. Herrenknecht AG is participating in the German-Chinese Esplanade event taking place in the Chinese city of Wuhan from October 23 to 31, 2009. This Esplanade forms part of the event series “Germany and China - Moving ahead together”.

Under the joint patronage of Germany’s Federal President Horst Köhler and China’s President Hu Jintao, Germany is presenting innovative solutions to meet the challenges of ongoing urbanization. Herrenknecht will show visitors the contribution that high-quality tunnelling machines are making towards achieving sustainable urban development and mobility. The company supports the Esplanade in Wuhan as a stage partner, as it did three times before in Nanjing, Chongqing and Guangzhou.

Rapidly growing megacities and overused traffic and transportation systems are concomitant effects of economic growth and urbanization in China. Only an infrastructure which grows together with the population can guarantee the quality of life in the cities. Therefore, the extension and modernization of traffic tunnels and efficient supply and disposal systems are a top priority in the Peoples’ Republic.

With mechanized tunnelling technology Herrenknecht is providing the key technology “made in Germany” to create new links within densely built-up cities. Tunnel construction takes place almost completely underground, without noise and impact on aboveground traffic and people. At the same time, mechanized tunnelling is faster, more environmentally friendly and safer for tunnel workers than conventional procedures (e.g. drill & blast).

Mechanized tunnelling technology from Herrenknecht is opening up new transport and supply channels for several large cities in China. The new construction of Wuhan’s subway line 2 is being carried out using Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines. Seven machines are excavating almost 17 kilometers of tunnel. 5 Earth Pressure Balance Shields are crossing beneath inner-city areas, two Mixshields - specialized in multi-layered, highly water-bearing grounds - will cross beneath the Yangtze River. In Guangzhou, the subway network has been constantly extended over the past years.

Of a total of approx. 140 kilometers of subway tunnel which are to be produced using Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (EPB Shields and Mixshields) with diameters of 6.25 meters, more than 105 kilometers have been excavated since 2000.

Herrenknecht supplied the two largest tunnel boring machines in the world with a diameter of 15.43 meters each for two gigantic traffic tunnels in Shanghai.

The two colossal machines, with a weight of 2,300 tonnes and a length of 125 meters each, crossed beneath the Yangtze River at a depth of down to 65 meters. The two tubes of the “Shanghai Yangtze Under River Tunnel“ provide a connection for the inhabitants of the nearby river island Changxing to the Shanghai city district of Pudong. The two breakthroughs in May and September 2008 respectively, set an international milestone in mechanized tunnelling due to the extremely large tunnel profiles and the corresponding high requirements regarding efficiency and safety. The project also set new standards with respect to the construction time. The two tunnels, each almost 7.5 kilometers long, were completed after only 20 months - 10 and/or 12 months faster than scheduled. The completion of tunnelling work ahead of schedule provides the ideal conditions to open the tunnel on time for the 2010 World Exhibition in Shanghai.

Herrenknecht AG is a technology and market leader in mechanized tunnelling. As the only company worldwide, Herrenknecht develops and produces state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines for all ground conditions and with all diameters – ranging from 0.10 to 19 meters.

San Clemente Island has long been rumoured to be a base of secret operations and training (seals DUMB sub base)....
The San Clemente Island Underwater Range (SCIUR) is maintained and operated by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, San Diego Site. The SCIUR is located off the northeastern side of San Clemente Island and consists of six bottom-mounted hydrophones that provide a coverage area of approximately 50 square nautical miles. The SCIUR has an acoustical, an optical and a radar system for surface impact location.

In response to the technical requirements, the SCIUR listed mines, sonobuoys, air-launched torpedoes, and vertical launch ASROCs (VLAs) as the types of impacts with accuracy requirements dependent on the object being tested.

The Southern California Offshore Range (SCORE) is maintained and operated by the Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC). The underwater tracking range is located west of San Clemente Island and consists of 84 bottom-mounted hydrophones that provide a coverage area of approximately 660 square nautical miles. A planned shallow water range expansion in the Tanner and Cortez Banks areas will provide an additional 350 square nautical miles
British Combined Operations veteran LCDR Wooley, of the Royal Navy, was placed in charge of the OSS Maritime Unit in June 1943. Their training started in November 1943 at Camp Pendleton, California, moved to Santa Catalina Island, California in January 1944, ...
... The TPI bars any training with MFA sonar within 12 nautical miles of the California coastline or anywhere in the Santa Catalina basin, except that Navy can use MFA sonar in the San Clemente Island Range Complex but only if the location is at least 5 nautical miles from the western shore of San Clemente Island.

Marines - Coast Guard Plane Crash at San Clemente Island

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy were searching early Friday for as many as nine people off the Southern California coast following a collision between a Coast Guard plane and a Marine Corps helicopter, officials said.
Investigators were trying Friday to determine why a Sacramento-based Coast Guard airplane on a nighttime search for a missing boater collided with one of four Marine Corps helicopters flying in formation to deliver troops to a training exercise on a military island off Southern California.
The Sacramento-based C-130 crew was looking for a man on 12-foot skiff who was reported missing while trying to row from Los Angeles to Santa Catalina Island, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Levi Read.
UNDERWATER WEAPONS RANGES: The performance of weapons cannot be adequately tested and evaluated in the laboratory.

This work has to be done on a range. For underwater weapons, such as torpedoes, this must be an underwater range. The rapid  development since World War II of sophisticated underwater weapons has called for a parallel development of underwater  ranges to test and evaluate these weapons. Several of these ranges  already exist and are constantly being improved, and others are
in the planning stage
. One of the better known ranges is in  Dabob Bay and is operated by the Naval Torpedo Station, Keyport, Washington.

The Applied Physics Laboratory, University of  Washington, developed the three-dimensional acoustic underwater tracking facility for this range. The range at San Clemente Island, off the California coast, is described by H. R. Talkington in the U. S. Naval Institute Proceedings of June 1960lZ . The ranges  in existence, and planned, vary in size from 1 to 10 miles wide,  3 to 70 miles in length, and 150 to 5, 000 feet deep.

In order to analyze and evaluate weapon and equipment performace intelligently in an underwater range, it is necessary to know those properties of the marine environment which either affect weapon performance or affect the instrumentation employed to measure weapon performance.

Oceanographic surveys of range sites are conducted during  planning and early construction stages. These surveys employ conventional available equipment. Once the ranges are in operation, periodic surveys are conducted to gather information on the degree  of variability that occurs in the range. However, these surveys do  not reveal the day-to-day conditions of the range.

The ranges are instrumented to provide an accurate and instantaneous presentation of the movements of a submerged weapon, or  a weapon and its target on the same run. From the data obtained,  accurate determinations of weapon trajectory, velocity, acceleration, turning radius, advance transfer, and other parameters are  made. This information is invaluable from the standpoint of design and tactical considerations. The ranges present a unique  facility as an underwater "laboratory" and many new uses and requirements for them are constantly being generated. Amongst them are calibration of ship-mounted sonar and navigation equipment.

In this underwater "laboratory, " however, we cannot control  the environmental variables. In this sense, the underwater range  cannot be strictly referred to as a laboratory. Therefore, it is important to be able to measure these variables over the entire  volume of the range, not periodically, but concurrently with the  tests.

A three-dimensional system is required that will accurately  measure the properties of interest throughout the volume of the  range, communicate the data to a central location where they are recorded, and graphically display the data for immediate inspection.  This is the ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM for the  underwater ranges.

The function of the Environmental Surveillance System is to provide, either according to a programmed schedule, or on  demand, environmental data from points throughout the range volume, including the atmosphere immediately above it.

To recap:
Marines-Coast Guard Plane Crash at San Clemente Island
October 30, 2009 at 06:20 am

A Marine helicopter and Coast Guard plane crashed near San Clemente Island, off the coast of Southern California. Nine people are missing after the AH-1 Super Cobra helicopter collided with the C-130 plane. Rescue crews are still searching for any survivors: the crews of both aircraft have survival training, provided they survived the initial crash.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman said a pilot reported seeing a fireball near the area.

The plane - reported to be a C-130 aircraft - is believed to have had seven people on board.

According to this official US Navy document the US Navy is indeed conducting live fire testing of missiles off the coast of California. This is a repeat of the situation with TWA 800 in which the US Navy at first denied knowing what missile it was that witnesses reported seeing only to have to admit to the ongoing tests of Aegis-CEC when the NOTAM surfaced days later.
Now, with this confirmation, I want to address this rumor being seeded all over the blogs about a Chinese nuclear submarine. This story tracks back to only one dubious source and the story is that a Chinese Jin class nuclear ballistic missile submarine launched the "Mystery Missile" as a show of force to the United States.
Chinese Submarine Launched Missile Off California Coast-Unproven
The email alleges that the large smoke plume came from a ballistic missile that was launched from a Chinese Navy Jin class nuclear submarine from an area just north of Catalina Island about 35 miles from the shores of Los Angeles, CA.

My 2 1/2 year old just can't get enough of that blue horse that killed it's creator in an accident.

The Colorado School of Mines have 'NON' accredited classes in some of the engineering aspects of these underground facilities.  The engineers that attend these courses WILL NOT discuss the facilities NOR will they even acknowledge their existence.

I know.  Because I tried to get some of them to discuss it and I could only get one fella to admit the existence of underground facilities.  Which was rather silly because the class they were in was specifically for engineering of underground operations.  My guess was the class focus was on hydrology, because the instructor was one of the world's leaders in the field.

Switzerland's World War II Bunkers Get a Second Life
By Helena Bachmann / Geneva Saturday, Jul. 24, 2010

Switzerland may be famous for its banks, but not many people know about the one that lies hidden underneath the Alps. The cavernous underground vault, which is protected round-the-clock by armed men in black fatigues and has blast- and bullet-proof doors, is strong enough to withstand terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

The Swiss military dug over 20,000 bunkers in the Alps, allowing its soldiers to stay hidden — along with their weapons, ammunition, and other supplies — and defend the country in case of an attack
Then, in the 1990s, it started to sell or rent some of the bunkers to private companies and other civilian organizations. Now these underground fortresses are used as everything from hotels, banquet halls and seminar centers to museums, stables, and, in at least one case, a storage room for cheese.
Some of the old bunkers can't be rented or sold because they are still used by the military, says Kai-Gunnar Sievert, a spokesman for armasuisse, the procurement agency of the Swiss Armed Forces. Sievert adds that the price for buying a bunker ranges from several hundred to $2 million, "depending on its exploitability."

Wikileaks Servers Move To Underground Nuclear Bunker
Aug. 30 2010 - 3:27
Some portion of Wikileaks’ servers have been moved to the “Pionen” White Mountains data center owned by Swedish broadband provider Bahnhof, as first reported by Norwegian news site VG Nett last Friday. That data center will store Wikileaks’ data 30 meters below ground inside a Cold-War-era nuclear bunker carved out of a large rock hill in downtown Stockholm. The server farm has a single entrance and is outfitted by half-meter thick metal doors and backup generators pulled from German submarines–fitting safeguards, perhaps, for an organization that raised the ire of several powerful military forces last month when it released thousands of classified Afghanistan war documents.
[ network taps for Sweden????]
Karlung says Bahnhof has not yet complied with Sweden’s new FRA surveillance law. “We have an unbroken chain of fiber-optic cables that cover 2,300 kilometers,” says Karlung. “We’re positive that [government agencies] haven’t installed any equipment yet. That day will come, and when it does we’ll inform all clients that they’re surveilled by the Swedish government.”

“Ex-Im Bank’s working capital guarantees enabled us obtain large loans in minimal time to meet major contracts in India and Mexico.”James Virost – Chief Financial Officer The Robbins Company, a 250-employee manufacturer of tunnel-boring machines, used a $25 million Ex-Im Bank-backed loan facility from Wells Fargo HSBC Trade Bank in 2007 to export its machines to India for a project supplying potable water to 516 villages. The facility supported advance payments that the Indian government required to be 100 percent-secured by letters of credit or bank guarantees.

In 2009, Ex-Im Bank guaranteed a $47 million working capital facility from Wells Fargo to Robbins to support its equipment exports for the drilling of 39 miles of sewer tunnels in Mexico City. The facility provided capital for standby letters of credit required as performance guarantees under the contract.

India building nuclear-proof bunkers for top leaders  By   IANS  23 September 2003,
NEW DELHI: The Indian government has begun building several hi-tech bunkers to enable its top leadership, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to survive a possible nuclear attack, official sources said.

Location of India Bunkers:

The move to build the bunkers, including one near the South Block, an imposing red sandstone building that houses the prime minister's office and the defence and external affairs ministries, was reportedly cleared at the first meeting of the Nuclear Command Authority on September 1.
A second bunker for protecting the cabinet will be built within a 400 km radius from New Delhi, and the government is scouting sites in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh where the cabinet can be flown easily from the capital, the sources said.

Work on a third bunker within the prime minister's official residence at 7, Race Course Road here is also believed to be under way.
Besides Vajpayee, the bunker near South Block is meant to protect key members of his cabinet, including Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and Defence Minister George Fernandes, all of whom have offices in the South Block or the nearby North Block.

Bahía Blanca is a city located in the south-west of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, by the Atlantic Ocean, and seat of government of Bahía Blanca Partido
The fast growth of the local economy, the policy of encouragement of immigration from Europe and the abundance of natural resources of the country attracted many immigrants, mainly from Spain and Italy, and a remarkable number from France, who settled in Pigüé, about 125 km to the north of the city.

Rocksy hits halfway – press release
By Tris Thomas on February 17, 2011

The first breakthrough of one of the two 12.45m diameter Herrenknecht EPBMs working on Brisbane’s 6.7km long Airport Link project has occurred deep underground at Wooloowin, marking the halfway point of the machine’s 2.5km journey to Lutwyche.
“Australia’s largest TBM, Rocksy, has already excavated over 1,200m of tunnel since she was launched at Kalinga Park in July,” announced Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe.
“Considering that this time last year pieces of the machine were being shipped to Brisbane from Germany, this shows great progress on the project.”
Minister Hinchliffe congratulated Rocksy’s tunnelling team who have worked tirelessly towards today’s successful breakthrough.
“Working around the clock, seven days a week, the TBMs have progressed at rates of up to 110m a week, digging the tunnels and lining them with concrete segments as they go,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Across the project, over 9km of tunnels have been completed, with the TBMs Rocksy and Sandy alone having excavated more than 2.2km.
Over 300,000 cubic metres of spoil has been generated by the TBMs and transported to Nudgee Road via a 2km spoil conveyor, eliminating almost 40,000 spoil truck movements from local streets in Clayfield.
“This is a terrific outcome for locals and commuters using those roads.”
Thiess John Holland Project Director Gordon Ralph said the second TBM, Sandy, was expected to break through into the Kedron caverns next month, with both TBMs scheduled to complete their 2.5km journey by the middle of the year.
“Once tunnelling is complete the cutterheads for the massive TBMs will be buried underneath the tunnels they have created,” Mr Ralph said.
“The two TBMs were custom built for the Airport Link project and this solution will reduce the complexity involved in removing the cutterheads, while avoiding the need for additional surface work in the Lutwyche area.”

BrisConnections CEO Dr Ray Wilson said today’s breakthrough brought the team one step closer to the operation of Airport Link in mid-2012.
“More than 70% of the project is now complete and when Airport Link opens in mid-2012, it will be the first major motorway connecting Brisbane city with the airport and northern suburbs,” he said.
”It will improve travel times, providing six new lanes for drivers between Bowen Hills and Kedron and four new lanes between Kedron and Toombul.”

Giant gaskets seal underground highway tunnel
Written by InfoMine - Mining Equipment and Supplier News, June 17th, 2008

In Madrid, Spain, an underground highway tunnel will help reduce traffic congestion. Like moles, two massive tunnel boring machines have inched their way forward, leaving a walled tunnel behind. Gaskets from Trelleborg provide a waterproof seal between the massive tunnel ring segments.
One of the many solutions in the project was a 3,650- meter highway tunnel that crosses the city center underground, less than 6.5 meters away from a busy subway line at certain points. Finished in mid-2007, the M30 “Bypass South-East” has three lanes in each tunnel and sidewalks on each side. At the time of its construction, the excavated dimensions of the tunnel, 15.2 meters in diameter, were the largest ever required. This demanded an entirely new breed and size of tunnel boring machine, also called a TBM or “a mole.”
“Two machines were used, one at each end of the tunnel. TBMs are usually custom-made for each individual tunnel project,” says Erwin Brakenhoff, Sales Director, Trelleborg Bakker in the Netherlands. “Costing in the millions of dollars, a TBM has the advantage over other methods in terms of safety and timing; in addition, it is extremely precise, which in turn, reduces the cost of lining the tunnel. This makes TBMs more suitable for use in built-up areas.”
Alfredo Avello, Director of Abyo, a supplier of tunneling equipment in Spain, calls the M30 tunnel project a team success. “This project was led by Madrid Municipality, and two joint ventures formed by leading Spanish contractors excavated the tunnels. In addition, other highly qualified Spanish contractors executed very important complementary surface works,” says Avello. “It has also been a pleasure to work with Trelleborg, which supplied gaskets for sealing the segments in both tunnels.”

The Cold War Museum (exhibition complex Bunker-42) is a military historical museum and an entertaining complex founded in the former classified military object of the USSR – Alternate Command Center of Long-Range Aviation (GO-42). The territory of the museum represents an underground bunker with an area 7000 m2 located 60 m deep near Taganskaya metro station. The museum has been working since 2006 after Bunker-42 was bought from “Rosimuschestvo” at the auction by “Novik Service” company.

In the 1960s the object was equipped with everything necessary in the case of nuclear attack. Later, in the middle of the 70s, there was made up a decision about its reconstruction. In 1995 the object was totally declassified. In 2006 “Novik-Service” purchased the object for 2,166,700 USD and started its restoration. Only massive armoured doors and steel sheathing of the walls remind about the former classified object.

In 2006, the secret signal office centre, located at a depth of 60 meters and has an area 7000 square meters has been sold to a private company. Now Soviet history is open to visitors.

The Red Bull company has spent today in the bunker selection round of the World championship of football freestyle.

Lake Mead -- Las Vegas' primary water supply -- has been drawing down like a leaky tub over the past decade, thanks to prolonged drought in the Colorado River Basin. The reservoir's now at 43 percent of capacity and about 100 feet below full -- just 45 feet above one of two main water intakes. If projections pan out, the water level could drop below that intake's pumping system by 2013. So the Southern Nevada Water Authority plans to spend the next three years and a total of $610 million digging under and up through the reservoir's bottom with a custom tunnel boring machine to build a new water intake, 190 feet below the one that must be replaced, and connect it to the existing water system.

Tunneling under Lake Mead

Las Vegas is digging a 1,500 foot long tunnel, 600 feet below ground through bedrock to suck water from Lake Mead, in case the lake level drops too low for the existing intake to draw water. "Intake No. 3 will maintain SNWA's ability to draw upon Colorado River water at lake elevations as low as 1,000 feet above sea level, assuring system capacity if lake levels fell low enough to put Intake No. 1 out of service." [right, Intake 3 tunnel. Credit, SNWA]

The starter tunnel is complete, ready for the boring machine to be lowered into it for assembly. An earlier starter tunnel was abandoned after it hit a fault zone and unstable rock. SNWA has a short video explaining the project.

Herrenknecht TBM Gets Ready To Drill Under Lake Mead

Southern Nevada's newest piece of mega-hardware—a custom $25-million Herrenknecht tunneling-boring machine—will make its long-awaited underground debut later this year.

The machine works like a giant mechanical earthworm, gnawing through dirt, rock and muck while forming a protective tunnel that will eventually channel raw Colorado River water onto nearby treatment plants before the water is pumped to homes and businesses throughout the Las Vegas valley.

The 1,800-ton, 600-ft-long TBM is the workhorse of a $526.6-million third raw-water intake tunnel project at Lake Mead, 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. A joint venture of S.A. Healy Co., Lombard, Ill., and Impreglio S.p.A., Sesto San Giovanni, Italy, known as Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC) LLC, is the design-build contractor. The additional intake is needed because the lake has dipped 100 feet since 2000 amid a decade of drought and boom growth.

The TBM will carve out a three-mile-long, 20-ft-dia reinforced tunnel under Lake Mead that draws water at 860 feet. That depth is deeper than the other two intakes, which may soon become inoperable if water levels continue to fall. The drill head, which rotates in 16 different positions, is already underground. The five-piece TBM should be fully assembled by early December, with commissioning to follow.

It has been a long, hard road to reach this point.
Herrenknecht’s Schwanau factory in southern Germany took 17 months to design and manufacture the machine, which was shipped in five large pieces to California’s Long Beach Harbor and then transported to the jobsite outside of Boulder City, Nev., in 61 truckloads. The transportation feat took months of planning and coordination, mapping out the route and securing special heavy-haul permits.
In 2010, an intake starter tunnel flooded three times in six months, prompting the construction team to abandon its original alignment and drill in a drier direction, roughly 23° northeast from the problematic tunnel along a ½° uphill slope. The move increased project costs by 15% and pushed the completion date back two years, to 2014.

As it stands, the TBM is being lowered piecemeal down a 30-ft-dia, 600-ft-deep access tunnel using a head-frame-gantry system with dual 200-ton strand jacks. It took crews 32 hours to lower the 315-ton drill head.
"There was only three to four inches clearance on either side," explains Jim Nickerson, VTC deputy project manager.

SHANGHAI, China, Sept. 19, 2008 -- Two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines, the largest in the world with a diameter of 15.43 meters, successfully completed their crossing beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai. On May 28 and September 5, 2008, the two Mixshields met their target shafts precisely on the Yangtze River island Changxiang -- far ahead of schedule. The 7,472 meter long tunnels connecting the Shanghai district of Pudong with Changxiang island have created efficient transport systems in only 20 months.

The Herrenknecht Mixshield S-318, one of the two largest tunnel boring machines (TBM) in the world with a diameter of 15.43 meters, reached its target shaft on the Yangtze river island Changxiang on September 5, 2008. But not only this giant showed a top performance, excavating an almost 7.5 kilometer long tunnel tube in highly water-bearing construction ground in only 20 months. A good three months before, on May 28, 2008, the identical Herrenknecht Mixshield S-317 reached its target shaft with great precision. Using the two high-tech giants from Schwanau, the shell of the two parallel running large diameter tunnels, which are scheduled to be opened for car and subway traffic for the 2010 World Exhibition, could be completed 10 and 12 months ahead of schedule respectively.

Shanghai, China
In May and September 2008 the two world largest tunnel drilling machines - two gentleman farmhand mix sign with 15.43 meters of diameters - locked the propulsion under Jangtse river successfully in Shanghai. After 20 months 7.5 kilometers of combined road and Metrotunnel were finished in the carcass. One year in former times than planned reached the giants their goal on the Fluss-Insel Changxing. Thus the chances stand well that the two parallel tunnel tubes can be transferred to traffic punctually to the world fair 2010 in Shanghai.

The largest Tunnel Boring Machines worldwide. Herrenknecht provided two 15.43 meter diameter Mixshields to excavate two 7.47 kilometer-long parallel tunnels, which cross beneath China’s largest river, the Yangtze. The Yangtze River is one of the country’s busiest waterways.

To avoid impediments to vessel traffic, mechanized tunnelling was preferred over an immersed tunnel or bridge construction in the very busy south channel of the Yangtze River. The twin tunnels are located at a depth of up to 65 meters in groundwater-bearing sand, clay and broken rock formations. The multi-functional tunnels will have two levels: the upper deck will be used as 3-lane road tunnel. The lower deck will serve as service and rescue tunnel. The longterm objective is to also use the lower deck for metro traffic by integrating the Shanghai Rail Transit Line 9.

Dongtan – the first planned eco-city.
The world’s first eco-city is to be created in the middle of the Yangtze River delta. This pilot project for Chinese environmental policy will be realized on the island of Chongming off Shanghai in the coming years. The planned eco- city will be built according to the strictest environmental standards. Dongtan will have the most up-to-date environmentally-friendly
technology. From waste recycling and water treatment – still far from standard in China to supplying heating and electricity from renewable energy sources. However, the planners are going a couple of steps further; they want to restrict car traffic to the periphery of the residential areas, which is why their transport planning is oriented towards pedestrians
and cyclists. They plan to locate working and living close enough to each other to make energy-consuming commuter traffic unnecessary.

The residential blocks are planned with no more than 8 stories, including their greened rooftops. The ambitious plan of the British engineering studio Arup and the Shanghai Development Company SIIC is to complete the initial phase in time for the World Expo 2010.

Some 80,000 people from various social backgrounds are expected to live in Dongtan by the year

In early July 2011, the Russian operator company NCC (Nevskaya Concession Company) placed an order with Herrenknecht – the TBM manufacturer, based in Schwanau, Germany – for the construction of a Mixshield. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Orlovski Tunnel will surpass all previous TBMs. With a diameter of 19.25 m, the tunnelling shield, designed to link both halves of the center of St. Petersburg under the River Neva, sets a new world record.
St. Petersburg, Russia / Schwanau, Germany, 17 August 2011. On the occasion of the contract signing for the world’s largest tunnel boring machine, entrepreneur Martin Herrenknecht recently met the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, in St. Petersburg. In a high-level business meeting, Mr. Putin wanted to find out at firsthand about the gigantic automobile tunnel project – an extremely challenging construction project under the River Neva, which will be carried out using the world’s biggest tunnel boring machine.

The contract for the manufacture of a 19.25 m diameter Mixshield, which smashes all previous diameter records, had previously been signed by the Russian operator company, NCC (Nevskaya Concession Company) and Herrenknecht AG. For Herrenknecht, this is the biggest single order in the company’s history and represents a huge technical challenge, which has been well prepared by extremely thorough, intensive preparatory engineering collaboration between the customer and the contractor.
Including the backup, the Herrenknecht Mixshield will be a total of 82 meters long. On its own, the tunnelling shield will weigh around 3,800 tons and deliver 8,400 kW drive power to the cutting wheel. The leap in diameter to 19.25 m will enable the machine to excavate 600 cubic meters of soil hourly. The excavation area is more than 50% larger than that for the largest TBM currently in operation in the world (see list of record holders below). A Mixshield is the quickest and safest solution for driving the around 1 km long tunnel bore under the Neva in the face of the high groundwater pressures. An extremely ambitious timetable has been set for implementation of the project. Tunnelling is set to begin in St. Petersburg in the spring of 2013, with the tunnel due to be taken into operation in 2016.

The aim of this new and world’s largest mechanically bored tunnel is to provide significant relief in the center of St. Petersburg and allow a continuous traffic flow in the city divided by the river.

A Race Against Time To Complete New Delhi's Newest Subway Line
By Sandeep Ravindran Posted 02.10.2010 at 11:23 am

A worker stands inside one of the Metro tunnels under construction in New Delhi, India, in preparation for the Commonwealth Games this October. To overcome the challenges of a tight three-and-a-half-year schedule and construction underneath a densely populated city, engineers used 14 tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) to dig the underground thoroughfare

Tunnelling will throw up debris, and challenges too

With the city receiving its first batch of Tunnel Boring Machines that will be used to build the Metro Rail network's underground section, it is only a matter of time before massive subterranean holes begin to take shape beneath the surface.
But much of the ‘pain' would be due to underground station construction. Tunnelling, on the other hand, would have little or no impact at the surface level. Chennai Metro Rail Limited Managing Director K.Rajaraman says that people will not even know that holes are being drilled beneath the surface.

Out of the 11 TBMs that would eventually be in operation, the first one would be launched from Washermenpet.

The tunnelling would be controlled by precision electronic systems. The cutting rotor (shield) of each TBM would also be supported by a 78 metre long trailing assembly, consisting of components that provide mechanical support and help remove the excavated material.

To put it simplistically, the TBM works similar to an earthworm with cycles of digging forward and dragging the rear end afterwards. A series of hydraulic systems push the TBM forward (excavating the soil), while the rear end of it is braced against the tunnel wall. When the TBM head has excavated to its maximum length, the ‘shield' and the rear end is pulled forward

Deep geological radioactive waste disposal in other European Countries
While progress towards a solution for the long-term management of the United Kingdom’s radioactive waste has been progressing over the last 8 years, internationally some projects are now at an advanced stage.

In Europe, Finland is developing an underground characterisation facility at Olkiluoto, known as the ONKALO, which has now reached a depth of about 320m. If ONKALO confirms that the site meets all the safety case criteria for the development of a repository, a facility will be developed at the site with a planned commencement of disposal operations around 2020.

Sweden has evaluated two potential sites for the disposal of spent fuel, one near Forsmark and the other near Oskarshamn, and in June 2009 announced that their preferred site for the development of a repository was that at Forsmark. They also have constructed and operate the Äspö underground hard rock laboratory, near Oskarshamn, that is used for full scale in-situ testing of different technical solutions in a realistic repository environment and have operated an ILW disposal facility at Forsmark for 20 years.

Both Belgium and France have underground research laboratories and are close to deciding where their disposal facilities will be located. All of these countries have worked in partnership with the local communities and have a high level of support from them for their projects.

A new exhibition about New York’s underground earth works reveals a quasi-mythological mirror image of the city

Workers are lowered into the Tunnel Boring Machine Launch Area, 26th Street and 11th Avenue, New York (2008

. ‘The Future Beneath Us’, currently on show at the New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex, and at the Science, Business and Industry Library, speaks of a mirror city to New York, a benighted, unglamorous metropolis of dark shafts and damp thoroughfares in which air is hewn out of rock, rather than rock heaped into air. It paints this portrait quite accidentally while describing the eight massive subterranean construction projects currently taking place deep beneath the city’s surface.

The simultaneous creation of a thicket of tunnels, hubs and work plants has seemingly resulted in an alter-city being formed, a sunless empire hidden entirely from the view of most of the city’s denizens. Chief among the projects is the gargantuan Water Tunnel No. 3, one of the largest engineering projects in the world. It has a diameter of seven metres, stretches for almost 100 kilometres, and reaches depths beneath the city of over 250 metres, as deep as the Chrysler building is high. It is a work of monumental size and beauty, a gargantuan concrete tube laid down amidst a glistening backdrop of quartzofeldspathically-banded garnetiferous muscovite-biotite schist. The only shame is that it will never be seen. Its entombment is part of its creation. It is a true earth work.

Italian tunnelling specialist SELI has celebrated its 60th Anniversary by manufacturing a 400-ton, 6.18m diameter DSU TBM painted gold, for the Kishanganga tunnel project in India. The gilded machine was delivered to the main contractor HCC (Hindustan Construction Company) today during an official ceremony at the company’s factory in Aprilia. The DSU TBM will bore 700-1000m under the Himalayas, crossing critical geological conditions of localised poor and squeezing rock as well of fault zones. The TBM has been specially designed to cope with the ground conditions and improve them through extensive pre-treatment works.
The company was founded by Mr. Carlo Grandori in 1950, and it was he who introduced mechanised TBM excavation technology to Italy in 1969 and, alongside Mr. Dick Robbins, designed and manufactured the first Double Shield TBM.
SELI claims to be the only company in the world that acts as TBM manufacturer and TBM tunnelling contractor, with experience of 800km of tunnels in over 100 projects all around the world.
The new SELI factory under completion in Aprilia (Rome) will boost the TBM production capacity from today’s 8 units per year to over 20 units, with boring diameters exceeding 15m diameter.

Gotthard Base Tunnel Ahead of Schedule (PHOTOS) Sept 2009

The Gotthard Base Tunnel now being drilled out beneath the Alps, the longest underground tunnel ever constructed, came one step closer to completion earlier this month when another two sections were connected.
Tunnel boring engineers broke through the last several feet of rock between Erstfeld and Amsteg near the northern end

The main section of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is 34 miles long and connects northern and southern Europe, said AlpTransit Gotthard company in a prepared statement.

The world’s longest tunnel should become operational at the end of 2017,” the statement said.
The company says the tunnel is an environmental feat and will allow millions more tons of items to pass through the Alps by rail.
“Only by upgrading its railway infrastructure can Switzerland meet the rising demand for freight transportation and the increasing needs of customers,” the statement said.
High-speed trains moving at speeds of up to 155 mph will greatly shrink travel times between Zurich, Switzerland and Milan, Italy.
The tunnel is currently scheduled to open in 2017. It will be a total of about 95 miles long when completed.
Surprisingly, problems arise not because the rock is too hard but because it is, in places, too soft, like butter, complicating the digging and slowing it to a crawl. The problems have caused the price tag to almost double, and the tunnel is not expected to be finished before 2018.

* In related news, an article on BBC WORLD Online ("Africa & Europe Set For Tunnel Link" by Richard Hamilton) says the governments of Spain and Morocco are now in discussion towards plans to put a railway tunnel beneath the Straits of Gibraltar.

Dick Robbins receiving his award

Richard J. Robbins, President and CEO of The Robbins Company from 1958 to 1993 is to receive the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Medal for Engineering. Dick is being honored for his career dedication to the development of tunnel boring machine technology and the application of TBMs for some of the largest and most challenging tunneling projects in history. Dick joins an illustrious list of previous recipients including, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Stephen Hawking, and Jane Goodall.

Richard J. Robbins President
The Robbins Group, LLC
Seattle, Washington

The 2009 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Engineering is presented to Richard Robbins for his
imagination and skill in developing a hard-rock tunnel boring machine and its associated
systems, resulting in a safe, economical, and efficient method for constructing tunnels.

From man’s first invention of gun powder, explosives were used to blast through rock and
ground to make tunnels. This dangerous process, used to build new roads or mines, remained
largely-unchanged until the 1950s when Dick Robbins helped bring an entirely different kind of
rock-cutter to the world’s attention – enabling for the first time such massive projects as digging
a tunnel under the English Channel.
Through the family tunnel drilling company, Robbins
produced Tunnel Boring Machines [TBM] that could economically, efficiently, and safely bore
through not only hard rock, but also through changing terrain or terrain pressurized with water.

While he had competitors, it was Robbins who provided the first truly viable TBMs, ushering in
an era of rapid, cost-effective, and safe tunnel construction.

Robbins earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University in
1956. Just two years after he graduated, he took over the family’s tunneling company upon the
untimely death of his father. In addition to the difficulty of trying to keep the company running,
Robbins focused on refining his father’s ideas for a new rock boring machine. He substituted
hard disks for the drill bits that kept breaking; he added hydraulic pistons to increase the pressure
and help fragment the rock; he developed ways to remove the rock without having to stop
drilling; and he ultimately even added maintenance shops and crews’ quarters to the giant
machines. He gained a reputation in the drilling community for providing machines that could
tackle the most difficult projects, safely and inexpensively, and for being someone who could
constantly dream up new improvements and then actually build them.

Carlo Grandori October 2002

By Dick Robbins, friend and collaborator

The international tunnelling community has lost one of its most innovative and productive personalities. Carlo Grandori, founder of Societa Esecuzione Lavori Idraulici (SELI), died on 17 September at the age of 91. I was privileged to attend the service in Rome where many of his friends and colleagues gathered to remember his life.

Carlo Grandori was a industrial engineer who specialised in hydroelectric construction and large dams. After World War ll, he concentrated on the tunnelling and underground aspects of this specialty and became known as an expert in traditional rock tunnelling. In the early 1960s he participated as a joint venture partner in machine tunnelling projects with his friend and TBM pioneer, Duri Prader, in Zurich, Switzerland.

I first met Carlo when he visited Seattle in 1967. He was planning a bid for the Orange-Fish project (T&TI, May 1969) in South Africa and was considering the possible application of a tunnelling machine. Although a machine was not chosen for this project, Carlo and his engineers continued to look for a machine tunnelling job they could sponsor.

After a complicated negotiation with ENEL, SELI was awarded the 4.5km Brasimone-Suviana Tunnel near Bologna, Italy, in about 1970. The rock in the 6.4m diameter tunnel was unstable and complicated and required immediate support. Carlo initiated the design of interspersing steel ribs with precast segments as close as possible to the front of the tunnelling machine. This started a trend in Europe of using precast segments in rock tunnels that would eventually extend to many other parts of the world. The unstable rock face led Carlo to suggest modifications to the cutterhead, which was the first attempt at rotary breasting or active support of the face while boring.

It was clear to Carlo Grandori that tunnel boring machines were in the early stages of development for bad rock conditions.
In-the-tunnel modifications would be required to adapt the machines to the rock, as it became apparent how the rock was reacting to the tunnel opening being bored. This initiated a life long collaboration for me with Carlo and his team.

In 1972 I brought to Carlo the idea of a telescoping shield machine with grippers located in the aft shield so that segments could be set while the boring was in progress. Carlo was intrigued and immediately began to sketch improvements to the concept. He realised that driving a machine through the rock was only one element of a successful job. Erecting supports, advancing infrastructure services and hauling out the muck were equally important tasks. The activities supporting the machine advance provided great potential for improving the efficiency of machine tunnelling.

In 1972 SELI secured the Orichella and Timpagrande tunnels in Calabria, a 4km long, 4.3m diameter, complex of tunnels in partly decomposed granite. This was to be the first application of a double shield tunnelling machine.

Carlo Grandori spent many days in his tunnels watching the machines and their trailing equipment perform. He was an active innovator and as a result the SELI double shield jobs performed with better results than could be achieved by other contractors.
After his son Remo had completed his engineering studies and military commitments he joined the SELI firm and gradually took on larger responsibilities in the machine and tunnel engineering work. Carlo shifted his concentration to unique designs of trailing or 'backup' equipment and segment installation.

Some years and many double shield machines later, SELI collaborated with Prader on the 7.5km long Langeten Relief Tunnel (1988-1991) in Switzerland where a double shield machine installed hexagonal segments for the first time. Carlo utilised this experience to design the backup system for the Yindaruqin Irrigation Project in China (T&TI, June 1991). This design proved to be a major step forward. The machine, operating in relatively favourable rock conditions, advanced 1,200m to 1,300m per month, while installing the hexagonal precast segmental lining. This job led to a long series of successful tunnel jobs in China.

Carlo remained active in the design of backup systems until quite recently. He designed a system for the Manabi project in Ecuador, which was only recently completed. The tunnel achieved an average advance of 64m per day.

Carlo's technical contributions and leadership in the field of tunnelling will be missed by the entire industry. However, he was quite successful as a mentor and teacher to many people who can carry forward his design concepts and creative problem solving in tunnelling.

Carlo's health had deteriorated in recent months, but he would recover to enjoy travel to the sea and beach walks with his family.

Son, Remo, continues leadership of the SELI company which is currently working on 16 TBM tunnel projects, from hard rock to large EPB TBMs, on five continents.

Both Belgium and France have underground research laboratories and are close to deciding where their disposal facilities will be located. All of these countries have worked in partnership with the local communities and have a high level of support from them for their projects.
HADES - Underground laboratory
The underground laboratory HADES is the most important research infrastructure in Belgium for experimental research on the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste.

In 1980, the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre, SCK•CEN, started the construction of the underground laboratory. HADES is situated in Boom clay at a depth of 224 meters and was extended in different phases: recently, the construction of a second access shaft (1997-1999) and the building of the connexion gallery (2001-2002) were completed

The Boom clay formation

The underground laboratory HADES is situated in a Boom clay formation at a depth of about 224 meters. Within the Belgian research programme, the Boom clay is studied as a reference formation for the geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, the site where the future disposal facility will be built has not been chosen yet.
The Boom clay is found on the site in Mol at a depth between 161 and 264 meters. It reaches a total thickness of more than 100 meters. Safety assessments confirm that the Boom clay possesses good qualities, also thanks to its low hydraulic conductivity and good sorption properties regarding radioelements. Therefore, it is a potentially interesting host rock for the disposal of radioactive waste.

Networks of Underground Research Laboratories for International, Inter-disciplinary Innovations

Synopsis of Workshop
Underground Research Laboratories (URLs) were initially developed in the 1970s in Sweden for thermal and
hydrological responses to emplacements of spent nuclear materials. Over a dozen URLs have since been and
established and planned worldwide for studying coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical-chemical-biological

Similar number of underground facilities has been developed for physics research, mostly at great
depths along roadway tunnels and in mine levels
. There are growing interests to use underground
for energy and environmental studies and with emphasis in multi-disciplinary and
inter-disciplinary approaches.

This URL workshop will discuss if networking among underground laboratories can be further developed from state of knowledge gained from past experience, current status of operation, and evolving plans. The preliminary agenda and topics to be discussed are given in the following table.

Finland's nuclear waste bunker built to last 100,000 years
November 12, 2010|By Matt Ford for CNN

It's one of the great questions of our age: What to do with nuclear waste?

It's challenging, not just because radioactive material is highly toxic, but because really engaging with the problem forces us to confront unimaginable timescales.

But in Finland they believe they have found a solution, with the world's first permanent nuclear-waste repository -- "Onkalo" -- a huge system of underground tunnels that is being hewn out of solid rock and must last at least 100,000 years.

"It is our law that we have to dispose of our nuclear waste within Finland's borders," Timo Seppala, from Posiva, the company constructing the site, told CNN.

Nuclear explosion shook Farmington
by Wade H. Nelson

There was no mushroom cloud, but on December 10, 1967, a nuclear bomb exploded less than sixty miles from Farmington New Mexico. Today, all that remains at the site is a plaque warning against excavation and perhaps a trace of tritium in your milk.

The explosion was part of Operation Plowshare, a program conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to explore peaceful uses of atomic bombs. AEC scientists proposed using nuclear weapons as high-powered dynamite in a variety of "nuclear landscaping" projects. The most ambitious Plowshare proposal suggested setting off as many as 300 hydrogen bombs to blast a newer, larger canal across the Isthmus of Panama.

The goal of the Farmington blast, code-named Gasbuggy, was to see if a smaller underground nuclear explosion would stimulate the release of natural gas trapped in dense shale deposits. Gasbuggy called for a 29 kiloton warhead to be set off four thousand feet underground in an existing, low-productivity gas well. Participants in Project Gasbuggy included the AEC, the Bureau of Mines and the El Paso Natural Gas Company (EPNG). Ground zero was seven and a quarter miles south on Forest Road 537, south off State Highway 64, in the Carson National Forest.

Nation-wide, it was hoped nuclear stimulation of gas wells might result in the recovery of as much as ten times the amount of natural gas as was then being recovered and help relieve the nation’s energy crisis.

The Gasbuggy blast created an underground cavern approximately 160 feet in diameter by 333 feet tall --imagine putting an oversized football field on a stick like a popsicle, pushing it 3800 feet down into solid rock, and twirling it. A few seconds after the explosion the molten glass-lined cavern collapsed, creating a chimney filled with rubble and debris. Geologists later estimated that fractures extended out from the cavern a few hundred feet in all directions.
Project Plowshare was the overall United States term for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes
Other proposals involved blasting underground caverns for water, natural gas, and petroleum storage. Serious consideration was also given to using these explosives for various mining operations. One proposal suggested using nuclear blasts to connect underground aquifers in Arizona. Another plan involved surface blasting on the western slope of California's Sacramento Valley for a water transport project

Dr. Ray Davis inspects his neutrino detector under construction in the Homestake gold mine. (1965)

A laboratory 4,850 feet underground in the Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, helped start a revolution in physics.

Dr. Ray Davis installed a neutrino detector in Homestake in 1965. Neutrinos are subatomic particles produced by fusion in stars, and over the course of three decades, the Davis experiment led to the discovery that the neutrinos produced in our sun change type, or "flavor," on their way to earth. The change in flavor meant neutrinos had to have at least a wisp of mass -- a wisp that required a significant change in the Standard Model of how the universe works.

Depth is Homestake's crucial asset. A thick layer of the earth's crust can stop most cosmic radiation. Ultra-sensitive detectors in deep, quiet labs, where they are protected from surface noise, can probe the universe's best-kept secrets. Experiments planned for the new Homestake lab include bigger, more sophisticated neutrino detectors. Other detectors will look for even more elusive phenomena such as dark matter, proton decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay.
Today the deepest, largest underground laboratories are in Japan, Canada and Italy, but those labs have waiting lists for experiments. A deep lab at Homestake could more than double the world’s inventory of underground lab space.
Title: Industrially useful microorganisms isolated from deep underground science and engineering laboratory (DUSEL) mine biofilms
Publication Date: November 4, 2007
The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) mine provides one of the most promising sources for microorganisms to date. These microorganisms have systematically evolved from organisms introduced from the surface to deep below ground level by humans and animals during mining and through water run off into the mine.

The microorganisms in this deep mine have been subjected to temperatures in excess of 100ºC, little external radiation, and in many cases have used lignocellulosic material as a food substrate. The wood in these mines is covered with biofilms that have evolved to survive the harsh environment. It is the objective of this team at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T), South Dakota State University, and United States Department of Agriculture, National Center For Agricultural Utilization Research, Agricultural Research Service to isolate and characterize anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and fungi that are capable of utilizing the lignocellulose at high temperature to produce biofuels and valuable chemical feedstock for use in industrial applications and to foster this new bioindustrial infrastructure with profitable co-products for chemical feedstocks, animal feed, and better production of starch and cellulosic biofuels.

The microorganisms will be screened in high-throughput for growth on cellulose and hemicellulose. They will be examined using automated integrated robotic paradigms for combinations that give optimum growth on recalcitrant lignocellulosic substrates and for maximum ethanol production.
New strains will be engineered in high-throughput via mass transformation of full length gene libraries to introduce these new DUSEL gene sets into traditional ethanologenic microorganisms for improved cellulases and hemicellulases as well as new genes for metabolic corrections to allow utilization of pentose as well as hexose sugars in fermentation processes.

25,000 year old Bacteria found in Permafrost here have been revived (

Significant numbers of viable ancient microorganisms are known to be present within the permafrost. They have been isolated in both polar regions from the cores up to 400 m deep and ground temperatures of −27°C. The age of the cells corresponds to the longevity of the permanently frozen state of the soils, with the oldest cells dating back to ~3 million years in the Arctic, and ~5 million years in the Antarctic. They are the only life forms known to have retained viability over geological time  (

Permafrost bacteria may slow down ageing: scientists
January 17, 2012

Russian scientists claimed that a hardy type of bacteria recently discovered in the permafrost of Siberia could help slow down the ageing process.

The species of bacteria -- given the name Bacillius F -- was found in laboratory tests to have shown signs of slowing down the process of ageing on mice, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN) said.

The Siberian branch of the RAN said Bacillius F lags 3 million years behind similar bacteria in evolutionary terms, according to the characteristics of proteins and some other factors.   (

Boulby Underground Laboratory: the UK's deep underground science facility, located 1100m below ground in Boulby Mine on the North East coast of England. Boulby is the home to the ZEPLIN-III and DRIFT-II Dark Matter search projects and various other 'low background', geoscience and environmental science studies.

There is a huge network of roadways and caverns underground at Boulby with over 1000kms of tunnel having been excavated since beginning of mining operations in 1968. The salt and potash seams are left over from the evaporation of an ancient sea (the Zechstein Sea) over 200m years ago. The main roadways and long-lasting caverns are cut into the rock-salt layer. Within the salt caverns UK scientists and engineers have built a series of laboratories. With over 1100m of rock overhead reducing cosmic rays by a factor 1 million - and with the surrounding rock salt being low in natural background radioactivity - the laboratories make an ideal site for ultra-low background and deep underground science projects.

Boulby is a village in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. It is located just off the A174 near Easington, and 1 mile west of Staithes.
To the north-west of the village is Boulby Quarries a Site of Special Scientific Interest designated due to its geological interest.
Boulby is also home to Cleveland Potash at Boulby mine - Europe's second-deepest mine, where potash and rock salt is mined 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) underground.

One element of the site investigations conducted at Olkiluoto is the excavation of the underground rock characterisation facility (ONKALO) that will be extended to the final disposal depth (approximately -400m).

ONKALO aids in collecting the further data needed for the application for the construction licence that will be submitted in 2012. The bedrock is studied with methods from geology, hydrology and geochemistry.

In addition to facilitating bedrock research, ONKALO also provides an opportunity to develop excavation techniques and final disposal techniques in realistic conditions. Later, the ONKALO facilities can be put into use when building and using the repository.

Posiva started to construct ONKALO in 2004. Research has been conducted there since the beginning of its construction.

ONKALO consists of one access tunnel and three shafts: a personnel shaft and two ventilation shafts. The slope of the tunnel is 1:10. It is 5.5 m wide and 6.3 m high

China's 1st deep underground lab now operational for dark matter
14:29, December 13, 2010

China's first deep underground laboratory was formally put into service in Jinpin hydropower station in Sichuan Province on Dec. 12, which means China now possesses an independent cutting-edge underground scientific research and experimental platform in physics.

Cheng Jianping, director of the project, said the lab is currently the deepest underground lab in the world with vertical rock coverage of 2,400 meters.

Experts from the project said the deep underground laboratory is of great importance for research of major leading basic research topics, including dark matter, particle physics, nuclear physics, neutrino physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and is a sound environment for research of rock mechanics, earth structure, ecology, low-level radioactive materials and nuclear radiation detection for environmental protection.

Experts from the China Institute of Atomic Energy, Tsinghua University, Sichuan University and the Ertan Hydropower Development Company formed a cooperation group to conduct dark matter detection experiments using a germanium detector made by germanium crystal material with the highest purity in the world. The lab’s first research on dark matter is expected to be completed in 2011.

the Jinping Underground Laboratory is situated some 2.4 km underneath the Jinping Mountain in Sichuan province.

As the lab is underneath several kilometres of marble and sandstone, spurious signals from cosmic rays are blocked, making it an ideal surrounding in which to search for dark matter – the mysterious substance that accounts for about 80% of the matter in the universe. The Jinping lab will initially house two experiments in that quest. Already installed is the China Dark Matter Experiment, which is a collaboration of about 30 physicists led by Tsinghua University that will use a germanium detector.

Alkino-2 ?

Starting in the Brezhnev period, Russia has been pursuing construction of a massive underground facility at Yamantau Mountain and the city of Mezhgorye (formerly the settlements of Beloretsk-15 and Beloretsk-16). The complex, reportedly being built by tens of thousands of workers, is said to cover an area of up to 400 square miles, the size of the Washington area inside the Beltway.
The exact location of this large facility is uncertain, and given its reported size it may span as much as an entire degree of latitude and longitude. It is apparently located near the the Zlatoust-36/Yuryuzan nuclear weapons production plant and the Yuryuzan national-level nuclear weapons storage facility. The Yaman-Tau Gory [mountains] range is centered at 5225'N 5645'E, while the peak of Yamantau Gora [mountain] is at 5415'19"N 5806'11"E. The town of Beloretsk is located at 5358'N 5824'E, though NIMA does not include a listing for Mezhgorye. This facility may be synonymous with "Alkino-2" since the town of Al'kino is nearby at 5505'N 5804'E.
The New York Times quoted Russian officials describing the underground compound variously as a mining site, a repository for Russian treasures, a food storage area, and a bunker for Russia's leaders in case of nuclear war. "The (Russian) Defense Ministry declined to say whether Parliament has been informed about the details of the project, like its purpose and cost, saying only that it receives necessary military information," according to the New York Times.
Satellite photographs of Yamantau Mountain show continued digging at the "deep undergound complex" and new construction at each of the site's above-ground support areas. Judging from satellite photos and other intelligence, US officials are fairly confident that the Russians are building an underground command bunker and communications installation.

But "... the Russians are not very interested in having us go in there," a senior American official said in Washington. "It is being built on a huge scale and involves a major investment of resources. The investments are being made at a time when the Russians are complaining they do not have the resources to do things pertaining to arms control."

What's Going On in The Yamantau Mountain Complex?

Today, Russia may be conducting nuclear deception on a far vaster scale beneath Yamantau Mountain, where it has dug out a gigantic underground military complex designed to withstand a sustained nuclear assault. A U.S. intelligence source was quoted as saying that the Yamantau complex is but one of some 200 secret deep underground nuclear war-fighting sites in Russia, many of which have been significantly upgraded over the past six years at a cost of billions of dollars.

In 1998, in a rare public comment, then-Commander of the U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) Gen. Eugene Habinger, called Yamantau

"a very large complex -- we estimate that it has millions of square feet available for underground facilities. We don't have a clue as to what they're doing there."

It is believed to be large enough to house 60,000 persons, with a special air filtration system designed to withstand a nuclear, chemical or biological attack. Enough food and water is believed to be stored at the site to sustain the entire underground population for months on end.

"The only potential use for this site is post-nuclear war..."

--- Rep. Roscoe Bartlett

Mount Yamantau (Russian: гора Ямантау) is in the Ural Mountains, Bashkortostan, Russia. The name means bad (evil) mountain in the Bashkir language (Яман тау). It is also known as Mount Yamantaw[citation needed]. It stands at 1,640 metres (5,381 ft) and is the highest mountain in the southern Urals. Along with Kosvinsky Mountain (600 km to the north), it is suspected by the United States of being a large secret nuclear facility and/or bunker.[1] The closed military town of Mezhgorye (Russian: Межгорье) is situated nearby. As late as 2003, Yamantaw was not yet fully operational.[1]
Large excavation projects have been observed by U.S. satellite imagery as recently as the late 1990s, during the time of Boris Yeltsin's government after the fall of the Soviet Union.[1] Two garrisons, Beloretsk-15 and Beloretsk-16, were built on top of the facility, and possibly a third, Alkino-2, as well, and became the closed town of Mezhgorye in 1995. They are said to house 30,000 workers each. Repeated U.S. questions have yielded several different responses from the Russian government regarding Mount Yamantaw.[2] They have said it is a mining site, a repository for Russian treasures, a food storage area, and a bunker for leaders in case of nuclear war
Russian newspapers reported in 1996 that it is a part of the "Dead Hand" nuclear retaliatory command structure.

Facilities for Deep Science

The 21st century exerts increasing demands to go underground. Expanding and developing populations put growing pressure on surface space, driving mass transit systems, hydroelectric plants, energy storage, waste disposal facilities and a host of other systems underground. The depletion of shallow mineral and energy resources sends prospectors ever deeper in search of essential raw materials and new sources of energy. Yet despite the demand for subsurface space and resources, major engineering obstacles to underground use remain.

The Moles Association is the most important association of decision-makers and representatives of the US heavy construction industry on the country’s east coast. The former US President Herbert C. Hoover is also among those who have been honored with the Moles Award in the past
They have been called “crazy men in a crazy industry” who gamble their fortunes and reputations against the challenges they meet. Often working underground, they change the face of the earth, building tunnels, dams, highways and bridges. They are defined as heavy construction workers.

In October 1936, a small group of these men who had worked together between 1914 and 1919 on projects under Newark Bay and on the waterfront of Port Newark had a reunion in Jersey City. They had such a wonderful time reminiscing about their experiences and discussing their work that they were inspired to form a permanent organization. On that autumn evening, what was to become the most prestigious heavy construction organization in the world was born.
In 1950, the non member was former president Herbert Hoover, who was labeled the "Grand Old Mole" for his engineering expertise. At the same dinner, Dwight D. Eisenhower was the Principal Speaker and was presented with Honorary Membership. Recognizing the rising prominence of women in the heavy construction industry, the Moles initiated its first female member in 1992.

The tradition of presenting two awards each year to outstanding construction individuals has continued to this day at the Annual Awards Dinner held each year in New York City on the last Wednesday of January. The giants of the U.S. construction industry have been and continue to be honored. Such individuals as Stephen Bechtel, Harry W. Morrison, Peter Kiewit, Lou Perini and Guy F. Atkinson were among the earlier recipients. In 2011, Robert E. Alger of The Lane Construction Corporation and Peter O. Shea of J.F. Shea Co., Inc. were the honorees.

The tradition of having a Principal Speaker has also continued. The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City was the 2011 Speaker. Earlier speakers included Richard M. Nixon, House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill, New York City Mayor Edward Koch and New York State Governor Mario M. Cuomo.

It's interesting that six months ago I could hardly find anything and now I look and it's all out there. Just amazing.
It's obvious to me that these TBM manufacturers have been boring underground privately for governments for years and now they are more public commercially. Also notice that these machines are dependent on Tungsten and the company that dominates Tungsten is owned by the Israelis and Warren Buffet.

Another good article:
The largest diameter TBM, at 19.25 m, built by Herrenknecht AG for a recent project in Orlovski Tunnel, St.Petersburg. The machine was built to bore through soft ground including sand and clay. The largest diameter hard rock TBM, at 14.4 m, was manufactured by The Robbins Company for Canada's Niagara Tunnel Project. The machine was used to bore a hydroelectric tunnel beneath Niagara Falls, the machine has been named "Big Becky" in reference to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric dams to which it is tunnelling to provide an additional hydroelectric tunnel.

Last I heard they have an observatory in Antarctica monitoring Nibiru's apporoach but nothing saying that it'll pass with no harm, some gravitational sheering on the Earth or complete upheaval of life on Earth as we know it.

Just think how fast the manufacturing jobs would return if Nibiru did devastate the Earth ?

India Pakistan nuclear strike against hundreds of large nuclear bunker planned 2010-12-07

LONDON December 7
news: According to "Pakistan Observer" reported on December 5, from Pakistan in response to the potential threat of war with China, India has begun the construction of large urban centers and military nuclear bunker. Under this military plan, India will build hundreds of underground large nuclear bunker, Pakistan and China to prevent the possible implementation of the "nuclear strike."

It is reported that India's nuclear bunker in the capital, Mumbai, Chennai, the fourth largest city, as well as the implementation of Kolkata city built along the subway lines. Some large bunker can accommodate a variety of essential facilities, including command and control centers, hospitals and training centers.

In the event of war, each of a large bunker can accommodate up to 8,000 individuals; special shelter will be designed to suffer a nuclear attack, including the President and the Prime Minister specifically for the Indian government at all levels, including executives are using.

recently, popular among the Indian army, a new war doctrine, may also face competition from India said Pakistan and China, two-sided fight; while India has also been working to enhance its military capabilities. India's domestic nuclear-powered submarine "destroy the enemy who" was the beginning of deterrence will cruise in 2 years to complete the Indian land-based, space-based and strategic weapons delivery underwater Trinity System. Wilma said the Indian Navy chief Admiral, with land-based, space-based and underwater delivery of strategic nuclear missiles, India really has a trinity of nuclear power. He said: "We specifically undertake not to use nuclear weapons first, but we have a 'destroy the enemy who' number; that the trinity of our system has been established, we must use it as efficiently as possible

Israel’s leaders hole up in nuclear bunker
Posted on Pakalert on June 23, 2011

Israeli leaders holed up in a new underground nuclear bunker on Wednesday as part of annual nationwide maneuvers to prepare for a possible missile war with Iran, Syria and their Lebanese and Palestinian guerrilla allies.
Officials said it was the first time that the security cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, had tested the bunker, dug deep in the western Jerusalem foothills over the past decade and dubbed the “Nation’s Tunnel” by local media.
Israel has held increasingly sweeping civil defense drills since the 2006 Lebanon war, during which Hezbollah guerrillas fired thousands of short-range rockets at its northern towns.

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker
Posted by Rochak at 2:26 AM

Inside a rural bungalow nestling in the Essex countryside lies the twilight world of the Government Cold War. Behind the blast screens that protect this bungalow is the entrance to an amazing labyrinth of rooms built into a hillside, encased in 10 feet thick reinforced concrete 75 feet underground.

The Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch, in Essex, England, is a large underground bunker used during the cold war as a Regional Government Headquarters. Since being decommissioned in 1992, the bunker has been open to the public as a tourist attraction (known as the Secret Nuclear Bunker), with a museum focusing on its cold war history.

Inside Tito’s Nuclear Bunker

During the convulsions that upended Yugoslavia in the 1990s, a secret came to light near the Bosnian town of Konjic. There — it turned out — the dictator Josip Broz Tito had constructed a labyrinthine bunker complex 900 feet below ground to protect him and his inner circle in the event of a nuclear attack. Today, it seems as remote as Yugoslavia itself.

Cold War nuclear bunker for sale in Scotland

A Cold War nuclear bunker in Scotland has been put on the property market by its owners, Comrie Development Trust (CDT).
The nuclear bunker is located beneath the rolling Scottish hills of the former Cultybraggan Camp, over a mile south of the town of Comrie and within fifty miles of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The former military installation was built in 1939 and played host to some of the most notorious Nazi prisoners of war during the Second World War.
Originally commissioned by the Scottish Parliament, the huge underground bunker housed over one hundred and fifty staff who worked to protect England and Scotland from nuclear, biological and electromagnetic attacks.
It was the most technologically advanced bunker built during the Cold War, complete with a BBC studio, a canteen, a telephone exchange and dormitories.
Construction cost in the region of US$48.2 million, which would be around US$144.4 million in today’s money, allowing for inflation.

Swiss Nuclear Bunker Houses World’s Toughest Server Farm
By Ian Daly 05 October 2010

Deep inside the Swiss Alps, a former nuclear bunker is now the ultimate hiding place for the world’s most sensitive secrets. Wired gains access to the server farm designed to survive a full-scale military attack.
“Sixteen years ago, nobody took us seriously,” Oschwald says. “They said to us, ‘Storing data under a mountain? Why?’” In the cheerier geopolitical climate of the 90s, it was decidedly easier to scoff at the eccentric Swiss entrepreneur, with his slicked-back hair and blinding white smile, as he extolled the data-security benefits of his decommissioned bunker. But today — with terrorism, environmental disasters and financial meltdown on the global agenda — some of the biggest players in technology and finance are buying into the facility’s promise. Oschwald can tick off blue-chip companies such as Cisco Systems, Novartis, UBS and Deutsche Bank among his clients.

The guards stroll over to greet their boss, who is 6’ 2’’ and wears a black raincoat and a dark-blue Italian suit. As he prepares to escort Wired inside, he explains how nearly two decades of work and an investment of more than 40 million Swiss francs (£25 million) transformed a decaying bunker into a fortified data repository. Swiss Fort Knox has a laundry list of features straight out of a film script. There are five security zones, a dedicated power supply, a cooling system that pumps glacier water from an underground lake, military-grade air filters that siphon atomic, biological and chemical impurities from the air, an emergency hotel, several months’ food, a conference room, and security, including face-recognition surveillance software, bulletproof plastics and vault doors courtesy of the Swiss banking industry. It is also, thanks to its original use, designed to be impervious to nuclear attack.
“We had a four-star US general who was partly responsible for the atomic-weapons programme come here,” Oschwald says as the guards look on, “and he said, ‘In America, we have a lot of space and a lot of soldiers. But I have visited a lot of sites and this is something… very special.’” As Oschwald speaks, a Subaru pulls up and a stocky man in sunglasses exits the car carrying a light-blue lockbox. He says a few words to one of the guards, hands over the goods and speeds away. Oschwald seems unfazed by the spectacle. He’s accustomed to nervy clients who still prefer physical data transfer to the virtual.

The Pirate Bay Relocates to a Nuclear Bunker  - 10/06/2009

The Pirate Bay is going on a road trip through Europe, one they hope to end today in a former NATO bunker. After a move from Sweden to the Ukraine, The Pirate Bay has now arrived at CyberBunker, an ISP that can provide them with a facility that can resist a nuclear attack as well as electromagnetic pulse bombs.

After being chased by various anti-piracy groups, The Pirate Bay returned a few hours ago. “Nobody puts The Pirate Bay in a corner,” they say on their frontpage, referencing Patrick Swayze’s famous line in Dirty Dancing. Not in a corner, no, but what about a bunker?
Last Friday we reported that The Pirate Bay was forced to move outside of Sweden, and that the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker had found a new home in the Ukraine. Unfortunately this was a short-lived solution, with TPB now moving to Cyberbunker.

CyberBunker is located in a former military nuclear warfare bunker in The Netherlands. The facility was built by NATO in the 50s to survive a nuclear war, but after the nuclear threats were over it was sold to its current owners. The bunker is now used as a webhosting data center.
The bunker is equipped with Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) shielding and Nuclear/Biological/Chemical (NBC) air filtration to guarantee that the servers they host stay up no matter what happens. As of this week it is also the new home of The Pirate Bay.

Lake Vostok, Sealed in Antarctic Ice, Reached by Russian Drillers

Two and a half miles beneath Antarctica‘s ice lies Lake Vostok, a mysterious body of water, 160 miles long and 30 miles wide, that is believed to have been sealed off from the rest of the world for 20 million years.
Now, the Russians, who run the Vostok research station at the surface, say they may have reached the lake with a drill bit, though they are still checking their data. The plan was for the drill to break through the ice into the hidden lake, and automatically withdraw so as not to contaminate the water below.
Lake Vostok, seen so far only on radar, is believed to be warmed by geothermal energy. But why drill to it, beyond feeling the tug of mystery?
“According to our research, the quantity of oxygen there exceeds that on other parts of our planet by 10 to 20 times. Any life forms that we find are likely to be unique on Earth,” said Sergey Bulat, the chief scientist of Russia’s Antarctic Expedition, as quoted by Russian Reporter magazine.
There are other scientists who are doubtful. Too much oxygen, they argue, could actually be toxic to life. So Lake Vostok could turn out to be unique — the first place found on Earth where there is water in liquid form but nothing living.
The Russians, despite the cold, despite limited money for scientific research, have been drilling down toward Lake Vostok for 14 years now. What will they find in the water there?
Lake Vostok: Russian Scientists Claim Success in Antarctic

Valery Lukin, the head of Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in charge of the mission, said in a statement today that his team reached the lake's surface Sunday. They had been cautious until now, saying they wanted to check readings from sensors on their remote-controlled drill.
Scientists watching the project said they worried that 66 tons of lubricants and antifreeze used in the drilling might spoil the pristine lake. But Lukin said in his statement that about 1.5 cubic meters of kerosene and freon poured into tanks on the surface from the boreshaft, proof that the lake water streamed from beneath, froze, and blocked the hole.
Russian news source RT reports that the scientists were able to retrieve 40 liters of water from Lake Vostok which they are taking home in sterile containers to test.

boring of Israel's first-ever railway tunnel

On February 6, 2012, the boring of Israel's first-ever railway tunnel began. A tunnel boring machine (TBM) began digging a 3.6 km tunnel from Latrun to Shaar Hagay. Two additional TBMs will soon begin to dig two more tunnels between Nahal Yitleh and Nahal Luz near Mevaseret Tzion; each one would be 11.5 km long, qualifying as Israel's longest tunnels.

By 2017, a fast train would cross the tunnels regularly, linking Tel Aviv and Jerusalem—via Ben Gurion Airport and Modiin—in just 28 minutes.
The railway would be able to deliver troops and weapons to a Jerusalem under siege when the time comes; the tunnel will assure that the new route is more defensible than Highway #1.

In 2017, the first passengers are expected to reach the underground Jerusalem Railway Station, deep below downtown Jerusalem. Elevators and escalators will help them to ascend the eighty meters separating the railway from the surface. This sounds similar to the soviet nuclear bunkers disguised as metro stations in Moscow. In fact, this is another Israeli attempt to camouflage Jerusalem and prepare it against a possible answer to an Israeli attack on Iran. Israel still lives the Burma Road trauma.
Video: The Train is Coming to Jerusalem

Arutz Sheva was present as workers began boring the railway tunnels that will connect Jerusalem to Tel Aviv
By Gil Ronen
Tunnels 2 and 3 will each be 11.5 km. long, qualifying as Israel's longest tunnels.

Each TBM weighs about 1,800 tons, is about 100 meters long and 10 meters in diameter. It rides a specially fitted rail and advances at a rate of about 20 meters per day and operates 24 hours a day. Each TBM costs roughly NIS 100 million.

About 430 workers accompany the TBM's operation. These include around 200 subcontractors, 200 workers, 20 engineers and 10 measurers. The project will utilize 150,000 cubic meters of concrete and 12,000 tons of iron.

Minister Katz said that the fast Jerusalem-Tel Aviv rail project will cost an estimated NIS 7 billion. The train will pass through Ben Gurion Airport and Modiin and reach Jerusalem near Binyanei Hauma. A trip from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will take 28 minutes.

The first train will leave the station in 2017. In the first year of operation, three trains will go from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem every hour, and three will go in the opposite direction.

As it approaches Jerusalem, the train will be 80 meters under ground level. Passengers will use elevators and escalators to ascend to the ground level at Binyanei Hauma.

Could it be they will give the election to Ron Paul ans let him and Congress deal with the Nibiru effect ?

All these underground bases and the NWO's Food Storage vault in Spitzbergen, North of Russia ?

One has to wonder....

China 'has up to 3,000 nuclear weapons hidden in tunnels', three-year study of secret documents reveals

Focus of research centred on 3,000 miles of underground tunnels dug by Second Artillery Corps
Investigation launched after 2008 earthquake in Sichuan revealed existence of collapsed tunnels
Study claims China could have as many as 3,000 nuclear warheads - far more then current estimates of between 80 and 400

China may be using thousands of miles of underground tunnels to hide a nuclear missile arsenal that is far bigger than current estimates, according to researchers.

They spent three years translating secret military documents, scouring the internet and studying satellite images for clues – and concluded that China may have as many as 3,000 missiles, compared with general estimates of between 80 and 400.

The researchers at Georgetown University, led by a former senior Pentagon official, concentrated on a 3,000-mile network of tunnels dug largely in Sichuan province by the Chinese Second Artillery, a secretive unit responsible for protecting the country’s nuclear weapons.

In 2008, thousands of radiation technicians were sent to the region after it was hit by a huge earthquake. When TV pictures showed oddly collapsed hills across the province, officials eventually admitted there was a network of tunnels underneath, dubbing it their ‘Underground  Great Wall’.

The 363-page study, as yet unpublished, has been discussed in Congress and circulated among defence officials. It was commissioned as ‘homework’ by the students’ professor, Phillip Karber, a prominent Washington defence strategist during the Cold War.

China has long been the most secretive of the five nuclear powers recognised by the international Non-Proliferation Treaty.
While Russia and America have bilateral treaties that ensure their stockpiles are monitored, the Chinese have simply claimed they keep a small number of missiles for ‘minimum deterrence’.

Underground Great Wall - Chinese Strategic Tunnels - Oct 30, 2011

A very good educational video made by the Georgetown University, Washington DC, for the Arms Control Seminar, describing China's "Underground Great Wall" tunnel network, which plays an important role in China's nuclear deterrence capability by enabling China to have a survivable second strike ability, while simultaniously masking the true number of China's nuclear arsenal. By 2011, the "Underground Great Wall" is reported to amass 3500 miles in total, hiding an estimated number of 2500 to 3000 nuclear warheads. The "Underground Great Wall" also hides underground production/enrichment facilities and nuclear reactors for additional warhead production  (

Record setting TBMs on Yellow River drives

Four tunnel boring machines working on the Yellow River Diversion project in Shanxi Province in China are setting record rates of performance and advance.
Portal of Tunnel 5 and culvert between Tunnels 5 and 6 on the Lot II contract
Since starting in 1998/1999 the four ± 5m o. d. machines two new Robbins TBMs, a used Robbins TBM, and a new NFM-Boretec machine - have turned in averages of up to 220m/week each and a combined average of more than 3,060m/month working three 8h shifts/24h day, 6 days/week. In January 2000, one of the new Robbins TBMs recorded an advance of 1,821m of 4.92m o. d. (4.3m i. d.) lined tunnel in one month. Even the slowest of the four machines has averaged nearly 800m/month for more than a year.
While recognizing these data as world records of their class, a visit to the project presented one of those rare opportunities to examine the experiences, performances and details of a group of similar sized machines working through similar host rock material, and to understand the influences that affect project-wide progress.

The four machines are working towards completing some 88.7km of 4.2 to 4.3m i. d. reinforced precast concrete segmentally lined water tunnel for the project on Lots II and III. These two contracts were awarded in August 1997 to a JV of Impregilo (Sponsor - 48%) and CMC (42%) of Italy and with Chinese partner construction Bureau 4 of CWCHM, the China Water Conservancy and Hydropower Ministry (10%).
Long distance TBM nears completion of China’s Pinglu Tunnel
Tue, 11 August 2009

Spanning over 10 years and 200 kilometres of tunnel, China’s Yellow River Water Diversion Project can only be called epic. The latest installment of the extensive scheme, known as the Pinglu Tunnel, will be one of the world’s longest tunnels excavated with a single TBM.  On 9 July 2009, the 4.8 metre (15.7 ft) diameter Robbins Double Shield TBM boring the waterway set ring no. 15,000 - making the tunnel nearly three quarters complete.

The Sino-Austria Hydraulic Engineering Co. Ltd (SAHEC) is responsible for the 25.4 kilometre (15.8 mi) tunnel, of which about 7 kilometres (4 mi) were left to excavate in mid-July 2009. The machine has been boring since 30 September 2006 in mixed strata up to 50 MPa UCS.
The final breakthrough is scheduled for the end of April 2010.

The Robbins machine has been operating in China since 2000, when it was used to bore the 12 kilometre (7 mi) long Lot 5 tunnel on an earlier section of the Yellow River Diversion. During the course of excavation, the machine set two world records in its size class of 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16 ft): best month (1,855 metres/ 6,085 feet) and monthly average (1,352 metres/ 4,435 feet). Both records still stand.

Lining for all of the TBM-driven tunnels has consisted of unique hexagonal segments, produced in the city of Shuozhou about 15 kilometres (9 mi) from the Pinglu jobsite. Segments are placed in rings of four elements, in a honeycomb configuration staggered longitudinally. The design was created to allow for high-speed, continuous boring with no downtime while erecting segments. The Pinglu Tunnel will connect to the North Main Line of the Yellow River Project, which additionally includes about 15 kilometres (9 mi) of drill and blast tunnels that will transfer water to Pinglu, Shuozhou, and Datong areas. Over 100 kilometres (62 mi) of the South Main Line were excavated by five TBMs, including four Robbins Double Shields, between 1999 and 2001. The entire scheme will transfer water from the Yellow River to chronically dry regions of Shanxi Province, an area that only receives about 400 mm (16 in) of rainfall per year.

"Michigan Salt Basin"

The Giant Salt City 1200ft Beneath Detroit

Detroit’s salt mines are like an underground city within the city. It is a massive expanse of 1,500 acres and over 100 miles of roads right under everyone’s feet. It stretches from Dearborn, located in the northwest of Detroit’s metropolitan area, and known to automobile lovers as Henry Ford’s birthplace, via Melvindale to Allen Park in the southwest.

What’s under Detroit? Sea Salt

Today, at a depth of 1,750 feet, the Goderich mine is the largest salt mine in the world, measuring about one and a half miles wide and extending two miles into Lake Huron. Since its inception in 1959, the mine has produced 150 million tons of salt. We are proud of all our present and past employees who have contributed to our half century of success and made it possible for Sifto thrive in this community.
Khewra Salt Mines of Jhelum, Pakistan

Alexander, the Great was on his expedition to conquer the Indian subcontinent. When he arrived near Mianwali region (presently in Pakistan), his horses began to lick some stones

Khewra salt mines of Jhelum , Pakistan are not only the second largest salt reserves after the Sifto Canada, Inc., salt mine in Goderich, Ontario but it is a fascinating tourist destination. Khewra salt mines are now administered by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) which was established in 1974. Although the main tunnel of Khewra salt mines was developed by Dr. H. Wrath in 1872 but it was ultimately established as a tourist resort by PMDC in 2002. The present architecture of the tunnel was designed by Chaudhry Niaz Ali Khan.

Adaptation of Underground Space

An examination of the opportunities and challenges of keeping paper, film, and magnetic media in underground facilities
by Tom Benjamin March 1999

The degree of security afforded your important records is one of the most important considerations when choosing a records storage site whether on-site or off-site. Nothing else will matter if something happens to your important records. A visual inspection and evaluation of your records storage location could be the best time investment you might ever make

Hey, you're underground and in the middle of no where!

Low cost compared to above ground.

Around the USA and elsewhere you'll find deep vaults that have been carved out of the earth. Some were former mines where the resources have dried up. Here you'll find secure storage facilities. Some for private individuals, works of art, government files, compressed air and more. Who knows, there may be one under your feet right now

Louisville's Underground-the 100-acre cavern under the Louisville Zoo has remained an unrealized business opportunity, virtually dormant since the last load of limestone was mined nearly 20 years ago to build bridges and roads across the Midwest.
Industrial leasing activity remains strong at Meritex Lenexa underground. Meritex announces five new leases and tenant expansions totaling 173,000 square feet of space at Meritex Lenexa Executive Park.
Lenexa, KS (PRWEB) March 01, 2012

Meritex announces five new leases and tenant expansions totaling 173,000 square feet of space at Meritex Lenexa Executive Park. Leasing activity in 2012 has started off strong following more than 370,000 square feet of leasing activity last year. “This winter has been fairly mild, but it’s continued to stay ’hot’ in our underground project,” said Lonnie Cannon Property/Leasing Manager. “We continue to see tenants and prospects wanting to take advantage of the underground economies.”
Hour Two: Limestone Living: Converting Mines to Human Space

What to do with an old limestone mine? Fill it -- with people, supplies, offices, and warehouses. In the greater Kansas City area, an estimated 20 million square feet of business and industrial space lies below the ground, squirreled away in space created by the mining of Bethany Falls and Argentine limestone. That accounts for over 10 percent of the business and industrial space in the area.

When mining began in the area in the late 1800's, limestone was mainly quarried. But starting in the 1950's, mining began to take place with an aim to leaving usable subterranean space behind. Tunneling into the hills and bluffs in the area, miners carefully extracted stone in a grid-shaped pattern, leaving behind large rooms with massive, evenly spaced pillars holding up the "roof" of the mine. Miners remove a 12-foot thick layer of rock some 150 feet underground, leaving a thick ceiling between the underground space and the outside world.
A truck in part of Subtropolis. >Hunt Midwest photo)

Costs for converting such spaces are low - the process mainly involves painting, pouring a concrete floor, wiring, and putting up a few walls.

Consequently, leasing costs are also low -- in some cases, half of what above-ground space would lease for. The relatively constant temperature, around 65 degrees, makes the old mines a useful place for long-term archival storage. (The original prints of 'Ben Hur' and 'Gone With the Wind' call a Kansas City area mine home.)

Costs for insurance, taxes, heating and cooling, and security are also less underground.

Food companies use the space, saving on refrigeration costs. The US Postal Service, the largest tenant of underground space in the area, uses mine space for fulfilling orders for stamps for collectors. A massive duty-free warehouse holds goods from around the world. Other uses for the space have included a college library, health center, and computer lab.

Marengo Warehouse & Distribution Center

The Marengo Warehouse & Distribution Center is a vast complex of storage chambers and roadways originally constructed as a result of limestone mining using the classic room and pillar method. With its dry, stable indoor climate (58-60 degrees year round) and secure access Marengo Warehouse offers a unique setting for storage of virtually any type of non-hazardous material. Paved, double-lane roadways 60 feet wide with metal hilide lighting and ceilings 30 feet high mean customers can route OTR trucks and container loads of product and material directly to their own internal docks at Marengo.
The facility also offers several more creative possibilities for customers needing large, economical, secure space. Office facilities, large scale governmental operations and, even, tourism possibilities are all worthy of consideration.
One of the world's most secure man made vaults, Marengo is nearly a three-quarter mile square with nearly four million square feet of usable storage area. The hundreds of individual chambers and roadway corridors in Marengo are large enough for semi-trailer trucks to turn around comfortably without ever backing up – an example of how Marengo saves customers time and money in loading and unloading.

The Bettmann Archive is a collection of 19 million photographs and images, some going back to the United States Civil War and including some of the best known U.S. historic images. The Archive also includes many images from Europe and elsewhere
In 1981, Bettmann sold the archive to the Kraus Thomson Organization.
In 1995, the archive was sold to Corbis, a digital stock photography company founded by Bill Gates. Issues arising from this sale regarding the restriction of access to the collection were described in the editorial "Goodbye to All That" in the May 2001 issue of American Heritage magazine.[1]
In 2002, to preserve the photos and negatives, Corbis moved the archive from Manhattan to the Iron Mountain National Underground Storage Facility, a former limestone quarry located 220 feet (67 m) below ground in western Pennsylvania.

The archive began with Otto Bettmann's personal collection of 15,000 images which he brought with him in suitcases when he escaped from Nazi Germany.[1] Over the years, it acquired other collections, including the Gendreau Collection of Americana in 1967, the Underwood & Underwood Collection of material from late 19th century to World War I in 1971, and the United Press International collection in 1984.
The best known Iron Mountain storage facility is a high-security storage facility in a former limestone mine at Boyers, Pennsylvania near the city of Butler in the United States. It began storing records in 1954 and was purchased by Iron Mountain in 1998. It is here that Bill Gates stores his Corbis photographic collection in a refrigerated cave 220 feet (67 m) underground.[10]
Iron Mountain has additional underground storage facilities in the United States and the rest of the world. Most of the company's over 1,000 storage locations are in above-ground leased warehouse space located near customers.

Plattsburg AFB NY

As a SAC Base it is highly likely that there were underground levels installed...
( ( (

Plattsburgh Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC) base covering 3,447 acres (13.7 km²)[1] in the extreme northeast corner of New York, 20 miles (32 km) south of the Canadian border. It is located on the western shore of Lake Champlain[2] opposite Burlington, Vermont, in the city of Plattsburgh, New York.
Atlas Missiles
Plattsburgh AFB had the only intercontinental ballistic missiles ever deployed east of the Mississippi River. During 1961 and 1962, the physical appearance of the area surrounding Plattsburgh AFB underwent changes as construction began on 12 Atlas F missile sites. The sites were built within a 50 miles (80 km) radius of the base and were completed in 1963, at an average cost of $3 million each.
The missile silos were built inside gigantic holes 174 feet (53 m) deep and 54 feet (16 m) wide into solid rock. Approximately 8,000 cubic yards (6,100 m3) of concrete and tons of structural steel were used in each hole to create a blast proof, underground silo, protected by massive overhead doors for the 81-foot (25 m) tall missiles. A single underground blockhouse containing launch consoles and personnel quarters was constructed at each site. The squadron was equipped with 13 missiles, allowing each silo to have its Atlas missile with one left for spare. When one missile in a silo was scheduled for maintenance, the spare missile kept at PAFB was sent to replace it. This allowed the 380th to maintain 12 ready to launch missiles seven days a week.
All sites were in New York state except for two located on the other side of Lake Champlain in Vermont. The 556th Strategic Missile Squadron, formerly assigned to Presque Isle Air Force Base, Maine, was transferred to Plattsburgh AFB on 1 October 1961 and became completely operational on 20 December 1962. This was the last Atlas squadron to be accepted. The 556th's last operational day was 30 April 1965 with the Squadron's inactivation on 25 June 1965. The inactivation was part of a phase-out of US first-generation missiles, the Atlas series and Titan 1 models, which was announced by Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense, on 19 November 1964.

In a section of my report on the current state of the Montauk Project and related activities entitled "Phoenix Undead" which lists some known subterranean facilities where evidence shows covert "psy-ops" activity being conducted, I referred specifically to an installation beneath Plattsburgh AFB in northeastern New York State.

Plattsburgh AFB has a VAST, 18-level subterranean facility.

Columbine perpetrator Eric Harris was born in Plattsburgh and spent his whole life there until his family moved to Littleton in 1996. Eric Harris’s father was an Air Force pilot stationed at Plattsburgh AFB.

What’s also curious here is that Plattsburgh AFB closed in 1994, was SUPPOSEDLY completely inoperative and the property due to be "recycled" for various other uses by September 1995. And yet Harris was still in Plattsburgh well after 94-95! The only thing still going on at Plattsburgh AFB after 1994 would obviously be covert activities. The peculiarities regarding the text of documents from Eric Harris’s website and the likelihood that father Wayne Harris was connected to not only the documents themselves but ALSO to the activities described therein CANNOT be forgotten.

Local residents and other eyewitnesses report that the base, though somewhat deserted, was still in some level of operation in 1997 even on the "surface," AND that top-secret operations were definitely going on in the documented 18-level underground complex beneath the base. This was verified by EM/RF signal detection equipment. Aside from mind control related operations, the base at Plattsburgh has currently been verified as a site of particle accelerator/beam research and experimentation.

There are indications that in the 1960s Plattsburgh AFB was linked to the horrendous Ewen Cameron, president of the American Psychiatric Association, The Canadian Psychiatric Association AND the World Psychiatric Association, and his massive abuses in the MKULTRA (drug and neuroelectrically-based mind control) Project just over the border in Montreal. Reports indicate that this legacy continued at Plattsburgh through the 70s and beyond with electromagnetic/radio-frequency MK activities tied to some of the experimentation at Montauk.

(Mentioned also in "Phoenix Undead" as a location for covert operations linked to Montauk’s mind control experimentation is Stewart Air Force Base in New York, in between Plattsburgh and Montauk. Military facilities at Malta, N.Y. are also strongly tied to MK operations at both Montauk and Plattsburgh.)

I have a copy of Sauders book "Underground Bases and Tunnels - What is the government trying to hide"? On pg 57 & 58 it says:

In 1975 the Defense Nuclear Agency published a detailed, geological study that discussed dozens of possible sites all over the country for very deeply based military installations -- as much as 5,000 ft. underground.

... It lists: "Mid-West - Northern Wisconsin (general area between Chippewa Falls, Wausau and Florence)"

Clintonville is in Waupaca County:

Nazi Engineers, Secret U.S. Military Bases, and Elevators To The Subterranean and Submarine Depths (Part 1)

The Intel Hub
By Dr. Richard Sauder
With Commentary By Shepard Ambellas & Alex Thomas
April 10, 2012

(The following is Part 1 of an exclusive underground base series brought to you by The Intel Hub with excerpts from the book Hidden in Plain Sight: Beyond the X-Files, written by acclaimed underground base researcher and author, Dr. Richard Sauder.)

In the preliminary stages of my research in the early 1990s, I had no informed idea of how deep below the surface underground bases could reach. By chance I had gone to hear a public talk by a man I did not know, on a topic that had nothing whatsoever to do with underground bases.

However, during the talk he unexpectedly made an offhand comment that caused me to think that he knew something about secret underground facilities. A few days later, I telephoned him and asked if I could come by his office to speak with him.

He consented to give me a little of his time, so I went by and asked him some questions, including about a specific location where I believed there was a secret underground base. He verified that there was a base there and told me that it was one mile deep.
At the time, that seemed improbably deep to me. I now understand, however, that it is well within the state of the art of the underground excavation and construction industries to build facilities one mile deep. In fact, facilities can be even deeper than that.
Other information that has since been given to me has raised the question of facilities possibly as deep as 12 to 14 miles. Frankly, I do not know what the technological limits are in the super-secret, black budget realm of compartmentalized programs.

But I can make some fairly well educated deductions based on what I have been told and information gleaned from the open engineering and industrial literature.

At a minimum, my investigation suggests that depths up to three miles are feasible, and that conclusion is based on a careful reading of the open scientific, mining and civil engineering literature.

At one time I considered greater depths than that as unattainable, but no longer. While I don’t know the limitations of the technology in the clandestine realm, based on everything I have heard over the years it must surpass the limits found in the open technical literature.

It could be that with classified improvements in material science and mining engineering that bases can be sited many miles beneath the surface of the land or the seafloor. Frankly, I now surmise that we are dealing with a science-fiction-like reality that has been held back from public knowledge.

In that regard, it is clear to me that there are power structures on this planet that closely interface with, and yet remain separate from, the official power establishment of any nation as publicly presented in the mainstream news media.

The sum total of all the many years of reading and research I have done, coupled with the myriad conversations I have had with an extremely eclectic selection of individuals, even raises the question as to whether some control structures and agencies for this planet may possibly extend off-planet.

But even if that is not the case, we are certainly dealing at the least with trillions of dollars of off-the-books money, very advance technology, an incredible infrastructure of secrecy, thousands and thousands of people who are in the know but say little or nothing about what they know, all of which revolves around projects of tremendous scope and complexity, carried out over a long period of time, and about which there is almost zero public knowledge.

Alex Thomas: “The trillions of dollars off the books, advanced technology, and the infrastructure of secrecy have all been brought about by numerous globalist organizations such as the CFR, the Trilateral Commission, and the Bilderberg Group as well as many other even more secretive groups that are not even known by name. Those involved with underground bases may literally know that they will be immediately killed if they speak out about what they know.”

I don’t know how many secret underground bases there are, but they surely do exist, there is no question of that.
In 1987, Lloyd A. Duscha, the then-Deputy Director of Engineering and Construction for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, gave a talk at an engineering conference entitled “Underground Facilities for Defense – Experience and Lessons.” In the first paragraph of his talk he stated that:

After World War II, political and economic factors changed the underground construction picture and caused a renewed interest to “think underground.” As a result of this interest, the Corps of Engineers became involved in the design and construction of some very complex and interesting military projects. [1]
A little further on he said:

Although the conference program indicates the topic to be “Underground Facilities for Defense – Experience and Lessons,” I must deviate a little because several of the most interesting facilities that have been designed and constructed by the Corps are classified. [2]

Subsequently Mr. Duscha went into a discussion of the Corps’ involvement in the 1960s in the construction of the large and elaborate NORAD base buried deep beneath Cheyenne Mountain, in Colorado. And then he said:

As stated earlier, there are other projects of similar scope, which I cannot identify, but which included multiple chambers up to 50 feet wide and 100 feet high using the same excavation procedures mentioned for the NORAD facility. [3]

You will not find a franker public admission of the existence of secret, underground bases than that.

It carries all the more weight coming from Lloyd Duscha, given his high position in the military-industrial complex.
Shepard: “I myself have conducted an interview with the owner of a major private underground base & shelter construction firm. What he told Bob Tuskin and myself off air during a commercial break was absolutely mind-blowing.

He literally admitted that most of his clientele is Illuminati affiliated, including politicians, movie stars, and more. He maintained that client confidentiality was a factor, claiming that half of the business is reinforced homes. Leaving the other 50% up to speculation.
The company has even built 3 massive arks for a doomsday scenario just like you see in the movie 2012. This was covered by CNN.”
The Project Paperclip, Nazi Connection

It is not accidental that Lloyd Duscha mentioned the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ increased interest in underground bases and construction in the post-World War II period.

In the closing stages of WW II, the U.S. military overran the Third Reich and confiscated a treasure trove of Nazi technology, engineering facilities and research laboratories.

The American military also apprehended and detained large numbers of Nazi scientists, engineers and technicians, many of whom were brought to the United States under the auspices of the infamous “Project Paperclip” and integrated into American industry, research institutes and into the military and other official agencies.

Read Project Paperclip File 1
Read Project Paperclip File 2
Read Project Paperclip File 3

The cases of such Project Paperclip notables as Wernher von Braun, and other “ex”-Nazis who were put to work building rockets and missiles for the military and NASA, are well known.

The American political and military establishments were very impressed with Nazi V-2 and buzz bomb missile technology, and brought Von Braun and his team to the USA at war’s end to continue and advance the research and design they had done under Hitler’s Third Reich.

The development of the manned space program, satellite technology, deep space probes, intercontinental nuclear missiles and cruise missiles are all fruits of their work.

But Project Paperclip had another aspect which has received almost no publicity. And that aspect had to do with the underground facilities that the American military discovered when they entered the remnants of the Third Reich in the concluding stages of open military hostilities between the Allied and Axis powers in the European theater.

I have two declassified Project Paperclip memoranda in my files that specifically request four men with expertise in underground construction, one of whom is Xaver Dorsch.

Project Paperclip File Xaver Dorsch File
The other men are not known to me, but Xaver Dorsch is. He was the director of the so-called Todt Organization in the closing phase of WW II.

The Todt Organization was originally headed by Fritz Todt, whence the name. Fritz Todt was the designer and creator of the well-known German autobahn system of highways.

The Todt organization served a somewhat analogous function in the Third Reich to that of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or the U.S. Navy Seabees in the present American military system.
In other words, it was a civil engineering agency that supported the operations of the German military, though, unlike the case of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or the U.S. Navy Seabees in the American system, the Todt Organization was not a formal part of the German military structure.

However, it did play a crucial role in the Nazi war effort and constructed many facilities for use by the German military and industry. Some of the underground structures that it built were impressively large and sophisticated.

In 1942 Fritz Todt was killed in an airplane crash and by war’s end control of the agency had effectively passed to Xaver Dorsch. In the closing stages of the war, Hitler specifically tasked Dorsch with developing a series of huge, underground, industrial manufacturing facilities.
Allied bombing raids were shredding German manufacturing and the Nazi command wanted to shift production underground, out of reach of American and British bombs. The collapse of the Third Reich ultimately put an end to those plans.

I remain persuaded, however, that a great deal of what the Allies found when they went into Germany remains classified to the present day, and that includes the full extent of the underground facilities built by the Todt Organization.

Xaver Dorsch was taken prisoner by the American military on 7 May 1945. I have two moderately lengthy documents that he wrote for the Americans, evidently as part of his debriefing by them.4 One was produced in 1946, the other in 1949-1950.

The documents deal with the administrative structure and operational activities of the Todt Organization during the war. I strongly suspect that Dorsch supplied a great deal more information to his American captors during that period that has yet publicly to see the light of day.

Xaver Dorsch may even have worked directly for the American military on the construction of secret, underground bases in the USA, just as he had done for the Nazis during the Third Reich.

It is a fact that he was in American military captivity and was requested specifically by Project Paperclip.
During the course of my research I spoke with an expert who is personally familiar with some of the Nazi underground constructions in Europe and his observation to me was that they were very well made facilities.

One of the best accounts of such facilities that I have found in the open literature is the anecdotal history related by Colonel Robert S. Allen that details what General Patton’s army discovered when it entered Germany in the closing stage of World War II.

Col. Allen revealed that Patton’s forces found four large underground bases in the vicinity of the grim Nazi concentration camp near Ohrdruf, Germany; other underground facilities were reported in nearby towns. Col. Allen provided the following description:

The underground installations were amazing. They were literally subterranean towns. There were four in and around Ohrdruf…. None were natural caverns or mines. All were man-made military installations. The horror camp had provided the labor. An interesting feature of the construction was the absence of any spoil. It had been carefully scattered in hills miles away.

Over 50 feet underground, the installations consisted of two and three stories, several miles in length and extending like the spokes of a wheel. The entire hull structure was of massive, reinforced concrete. Purpose of the installations was to house the High Command after it was bombed out of Berlin. The Ohrdruf installations were to have been used by the Signal Communications Section.
One, near the horror camp, was a huge telephone exchange equipped with the latest and finest apparatus. Signal Corps experts estimated their cost at $10,000,000.

This place also had paneled and carpeted offices, scores of large work and store rooms, tiled bathrooms with both tubs and showers, flush toilets, electrically equipped kitchens, decorated dining rooms and mess halls, giant refrigerators, extensive sleeping quarters, recreation rooms, separate bars for officers and enlisted personnel, a moving-picture theater, and air-conditioning and sewage systems. Begun in 1944, the installations had been completed but never occupied. [5]

The Regenwurmlager in Poland

Another spectacular example of Nazi underground engineering prowess was the subterranean Regenwurmlager complex that still sprawls for many miles deep beneath the countryside of western Poland. Several years ago Paul Stonehill wrote an eye-opening article about this site, replete with color photos, in FATE magazine. [6]

The Regenwurmlager was an obvious Nazi analog on the eastern German border region to the well-known Maginot Line that the French had built in their eastern border region, in that it also, like the Maginot Line, was comprised of many miles of underground tunnels and electric train lines connecting bunkers, fortifications and other critical military facilities.

Amazingly, the full extent of the huge complex is not known, even today. It is not known if either the Poles or the Russians have ever fully explored the many miles of tunnels and underground emplacements.

According to Stonehill, the facility has many secret or hidden entrances, and an underground subway system with an electric train on rails that ran through a tunnel approximately 100 to 165 feet below the surface.

On the surface, there were numerous military fortifications and bunkers crammed with weaponry, connected by secret passages to a sprawling labyrinth of tunnels below ground, said to be 30 miles or more in length.
Stonehill reports that Adolf Hitler is alleged to have visited the Regenwurmlager in 1937, riding in on the underground subway train. [7]
It happens that the Regenwurmlager complex of military bunkers and underground tunnels and subway trains was located in territory that was overrun by Soviet troops in the closing stages of World War II, so the American military may never have examined the facility.

However, I consider it very likely that Xaver Dorsch would have had personal knowledge of this facility, and it is quite likely that he extensively briefed his American captors on the large Regenwurmlager system of underground tunnels and bunkers.

This book cannot provide an exhaustive treatment of Nazi underground facilities, but the examples provided suffice to demonstrate that 65 to 75 years ago, Nazi engineers already had a sophisticated capability to construct elaborate, large facilities underground.

The American military understood this clearly at war’s end, and urgently wanted to bring Nazi experts to the USA to build underground facilities here also.

By the time you finish this book, you should understand that this mission was accomplished.
While we still do not know the full scope of what the Nazis did underground decades ago, we also still do not know the full extent of what the American military, and other agencies and corporations, have built underground right here in the USA, and elsewhere in the world.

What can be said with certainty is that an extensive program of secret underground construction began in earnest in the years following WW II and that program continues in effect to this day.

In part 2 of this exclusive series we will be discussing known locations of underground bases as well as areas believed to house the bigger, more secretive ones. At the conclusion of this 5 part series we will be conducting a major roundtable discussion on the the topic. Please spread this article and the entire series to your friends and family!

L.A. to N.Y. in Half an Hour: 10,000 Plus M.P.H. Tunnel Train Used for Underground Bases?

By Shepard Ambellas & Avalon
April 12, 2012

Note: This article is an add-on to our ongoing series, in conjunction with Dr. Richard Sauder, on the existence of a vast network of underground bases throughout the country.

Read part 1 of the series: “Nazi Engineers, Secret U.S. Military Bases, and Elevators To The Subterranean and Submarine Depths.”
The Vary High Speed Transit System (VHST) was a Rand Corporation concept that was presented to the military industrial complex in the 1970′s.

The concept was way ahead of it’s time, exactly what the secret sinister government needed to connect their vast expansions of underground bases throughout the United States and in various regions worldwide.

This could offer an explanation for some of the recent strange sounds and booms across the country.

The late (and presumably murdered) Phil Schneider spoke about what he called an Electro Magneto Leviton Train System that traveled at speeds in excess of Mach 2.

The VHST and its proposed routes, (vast advanced tunnel systems) at the time of it’s conception in the early 1970′s, fit and follow other underground base researchers findings as well as some of my own.

An interesting aspect within the Rand Corp. document is the fact that the tunnels are way to expansive to pump all of the air out at once to create the frictionless environment needed travel at speeds in excess of 10,000+ MPH.

The air has to be evacuated from the tunnel system in segments with large crucially timed mechanized door systems as the train passes through each vapor locked section.

Electrical and mechanical noises would ensue from such operation of massive airlock doors throughout the tunnel system once the underground bases or VHST were fully operational.

During this process strange air like sounds, hums, and mechanized sounds would persist especially if the tunnels were at a depth of 400 – 800 feet (semi shallow in underground base terms). Energy is also returned into the system as the trains decelerate.
The recent Clintonville booms might also be explained as underground sonic booms.

As the trains reach the speed of sound, a sonic boom could be heard and felt. Multiple booms could persist in one area as the train reaches the speed of sound at the same point in the tunnel system every trip.

The following article entitled ‘L.A. to N.Y. in Half an Hour? 10,000 – M.P.H. Tunnel Train Plan Developed’, was first published in the year 1972 by the LA Times;

LA Times
June 11, 1972
A Rand corporation physicist has devised a rapid transit system to get you from Los Angeles to NY in half an hour for a $50 fare. He said existing technology made such a system feasible and so does a cost analysis. The essence of the idea is to dig a tunnel more or less along the present routes of U.S. highways 66 and thirty. The tunnel would contain several large tubes for East West travel of trains that float on magnetic fields, moving at top speeds of 10,000 mph. Passengers would faced forwarded during acceleration, backward during deceleration.

According to R. M. Salter Jr. head of the physical sciences department at Rand, the idea of high-speed train travel using electromagnetic suspension was first put forward in 1905 and actually patented in 1912. The trains he suggested now would be single cars rather than actual trains, and would be big enough to carry both passengers and freight, including large containers and automobiles.

The cars, or gondolas, would leave the New York and Los Angeles terminals at one minute or even 30 second intervals. On the main line their would be intermediate stops at Amarillo and Chicago. Feeder lines would meet the main lines at both locations.
Their would also be subsidiary lines coming into the two main terminals from such cities as San Francisco, Boston and Washington. The main idea of VHST, or Very High Speed Transit, developed originally in thinking about the satellite program and hyper sonic aircraft speeds.” Salter said in an interview at Rand.

“The underground tubes were for suggested as alternatives, perhaps not quite seriously, but it was soon apparent that the idea of a tunnel containing such tubes had a lot of real advantages.” he said.

In the first place, he explained there is the extremely important matter of the use and conservation of immense amounts of energy needed to move the vehicles at such great speed. “An airplane that travels faster than sound uses up a large part of its available energy supply just in climbing to an altitude where the speeds for which it is designed are possible.” Salter said. “That’s true of rockets to. Much of their energy is spent and lost forever and getting above the atmosphere.”

This would not be true for the VHST gondolas traveling on their electromagnetic rail beds, according to Salter. The tubes would be emptied of air, almost to the point of vacuum, so the trains would not need much power to overcome air resistance. They would not even have to be streamlined. In addition to an electromagnetic roadbeds, the opposing electromagnetic loops of wires in the floors of the gondolas would be super cooled with liquid Helium to further eliminate electrical resistance.

Just as important, the gondolas would, like old-fashioned trolley cars, generate power as they break to a stop. “Since the trains would be leaving New York and Los Angeles simultaneously every minute, the power generated by cars breaking coming into the terminal would be transferred to the power lines propelling the cars going the other way.”

“For example, there will be halfway points between each stop. Trains would use power and getting to that halfway point, and generate power going the other half of the way to the stop. Each would use power generated by trains going in the other direction.” That is the way trolley cars have operated for eighty years – taking power from the overhead lines while accelerating or running along at a steady speed, and putting power back into the lines while breaking or coasting.

The big drawback to the Salter scheme is the cost of tunneling across the nation. He admitted that it would be expensive but it does not daunt him. “After the tunneling was finished, everything else would be practically free.” He said. Even at the low fair he proposes, the enormous debt created by the tunneling would be amortized within a reasonable period if the number of passengers and the amount of freight came up to Salter’s expectations.

He figures the tunnel’s would carry seven or 8 million tons of freight a day and that passengers would take to traveling back and forth between the Eastern West Coast has readily as they now fly between San Francisco and Los Angeles. “The technology of this is much easier than was developed for the space program.”Salter said. And tunnels, he added, need not be so expensive to dig is people think.
The most expensive thing about surface routes is the acquiring right-of-way and removing buildings that stand on the chosen route. The tunnel would not incur this expense. The tunnel, besides carrying tubes for passenger and freight gondolas, would carry many of the utilities now strung across the countryside on high wires. Salter said these underground power “lines” could be super-cooled with helium, like the electromagnetic loops in the floors of the gondolas. He said this would so reduce resistance that power could be transferred from one end of the country to the other without appreciable loss.

At the present time long distance transportation of power is difficult because of the amount of energy wasted. He said laser beams could be carried in the tunnel for the instantaneous transmission of messages. Even the mail could go cross-country in pneumatic tubes carried in the tunnel. All this would save money and speed amortization, thus cutting the overall cost of tunneling. Salter said approximately 8000 miles of tunnel were dug in America and Western Europe in the 1960s.

That includes mine shafts. But he said existing tunneling technology could be vastly improved. Salter said many tunnels are dug nowadays almost as they would have been in the dark ages. Drilling holes in tunnel faces, and using machines with rotary bits are methods of tunneling that can be improved, according to him. He said the tunnel could be worked on from a great many “faces,” for instance. Salter suggested, too, that electronic beams or even water be used to drill holes for blasting. The high-powered electrons would drill blasting holes almost instantaneously.

Projections of future airplane and automobile travels in the United States, and the future train and truck transfer of freight, show that Salter’s tunnel idea is not a science fiction fantasy.

There will be more room in the tunnels for all the necessary transport than there will be over any feasible number of Airways and freeways and tracks. Salter’s suggestion, according to the experts who have had a look at it, is an eminently practical one for handling all the necessary traffic cleanly and without clogging up the air and surface pathways. But it will such a system ever be developed? Salter himself is not optimistic.

“Perhaps” is how he puts it. “I am not nearly so optimistic about the political aspects of the problem as I am about our technical capability of doing the job.” He said. “History shows that some obviously feasible and practical projects, such as the tunnel proposed over and over again for connecting England and France under the English channel, can be put off for centuries because of political pressure.

On the other hand, societies with relatively primitive technology can perform such engineering feats as the erection of impairments.” Is the VHS T too far out? Salter suggested that to get the right perspective we should look back 100 years.

By comparing transportation a century ago and transportation today, one gets a better feel for just how practical VHST is. It appears to be a logical next step, and much more practical than its alternatives of filling the highways and Airways with more and more individually guided vehicles. “This alone is a compelling reason for the high-speed system.” Salter said. T

here are others, according to him. “We can’t afford any longer to continue indefinitely to pollute the skies with heat, chemicals, not to mention noise, or to carve up the land with pavement.” He said. “We also need to get the trucks and many of the cars off the highway to make the roads available to drivers who drive the family car for fun and convenience.”

As the former official host of The Intel Hub Radio Show, I have to admit I have interviewed some interesting people. However, one interview in particular has always stood out to me.

The interview was with the owner of a private underground base construction company with military ties. During the interview it was stated that for some reason the people in the know are indeed gearing up at a rapid rate for some event that is to occur in the not so distant future.

What might this event be?

Why are the bases activating?

This technology is 100% real and fully functional in the present day.

They could be preparing for Nibiru's coming.  If Nibiru was getting close to the Earth do you honestly think NASA would panic the public by saying anything ?

Think of it what a perfect way for Global Government to form, Nibiru passes, causes devastation, the people cry out and Global Government is formed.

That's if Nibiru comes close to enough to do any harm.

The whole financial crisis may just be a cover for the public consuption.

One reason for the financial meltdown is rats burrowing into the earth.
If you KNOW that the world (as you know it) is ending, then the long term financing goes out the window.

I'm somewhat of a compulsive wanderer/explorer myself, and I have always been drawn to tunnels and secret underground stuff -- I even dream about it. I have a knack for overhearing building engineers talking about underground tunnels in their buildings and then I find my way into them.   However, since 9/11 everything's gotten harder and everybody is paranoid. Getting into DUMB type facilities would be way cool, tho I don't anticipate it happening anytime soon.

Interesting. I'm within walking/biking distance of Rt 30, and also not far from where 30 and the former Rt 66 cross paths, around Joliet.

Tahoe, are you (or anybody) aware of any DUMB connections to the Chicago area Deep Tunnel Project ( It's said to be a storm drainage project but it's been going on for 30+ years and isn't scheduled for completion until 2029!

Supposedly, they're using old-fashioned drill & blast technology, which if true, might speak to the corruption and patronage in IL. Why not use state-of-the-art tech?

Or, that could be a cover story for "other activities" or parallel activities. I heard someone claim on "Coast to Coast" that this project had some kind of miltary connection (would be run by Army Corps of Engineers like other waterways, but that's just the beginning), but I don't know of any substantiation for that.

It wouldn't exactly surprise me if that was true. Chicagoland area is just the kind of place where you'd want to have extensive secret facilities for personnel, materiel, and transportation to control the natives in the event of “"civil unrest.”"

They tried to locate a CCA-operated “detention center” out here (for "“illegal immigrants," natch), which would've been not far south of Rt 30, I might add. But citizens and activists, some coming way out from the north side of Chicago, put up such a fuss that the village that was selected has turned down the project. They will probably find a spot for it, though.

The White House Construction Project - "The Big Dig"

In 2010, the White House Deep Underground Command Center project secretly got underway. The construction equipment arrived and tall fences went up around the West Wing of the White House. An initial ill-conceived scheme to deceive the public about the true nature of the construction led to the widespread reporting of a mere "utility upgrade" project. However, the massive scope of the construction led to many questions and outrageous conspiracy theories.

Deep Underground Command Center

Since the early 1960's, the need for a Deep Underground Command Center (DUCC) has been studied. This Top Secret 1963 memo outlined the requirements for the construction of a DUCC. Because of limits in technology at that time, the project was deferred. Fifty years later, the DUCC is finally becoming a reality.

The new underground command center serves two purposes: 1) To protect key people with sufficient staff and data to render critical decisions and 2) Ensure the survival of the facility to allow dissemination of these decisions. The DUCC can only serve this purpose if the President and his team can secretly relocate there on very short notice.

Unlike the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC) which is currently located below the East Wing of the White House, the DUCC will house its own massive communications center that interfaces with all military, intelligence, and critical federal agency systems. For security purposes, the exact specifications of the DUCC facility are classified.

After huge White House construction job, West Wing emerges little changed _ but for how long?
By Associated Press Published: September 11

WASHINGTON — The White House Big Dig is finally wrapping up, but the Big Reveal is proving to be a pretty big letdown.

After nearly two years and $86 million worth of noisy and disruptive construction, the West Wing has emerged from its visual seclusion remarkably unchanged. And deep underground, whatever has been built there remains shrouded in mystery.
The construction project — officially a long overdue upgrade of White House utilities — began in September 2010 with the excavation of a huge, multistory pit in front of the West Wing, wrapping around to include West Executive Avenue, the street that separates the White House from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. A tall, green construction fence sprang up that blocked America’s most famous office complex from public view.

But now the fence has come down, revealing the familiar whitewashed sandstone facade and the lone Marine guard who stands watch at the entrance to the West Wing lobby.

Bulldozers have covered up the hole. Contractors have repaved the asphalt driveway. National Park Service crews are mostly finished re-grading, re-sodding and replanting. Their goal has been to return the area to its original appearance.

So what, exactly, did all the digging, hammering, welding and concrete-pouring accomplish?

The General Services Administration, which oversaw the work, said it was to replace aging water and steam lines, sewers, storm sewers and electrical wiring conduits. Heating, air conditioning and fire control equipment also are being updated, officials said.

However, what reporters and photographers saw during the construction appeared to go well beyond that: a sprawling, multistory structure whose underground assembly required truckload after truckload of heavy-duty concrete and steel beams....

It staggers the mind. These freaks have interconnecting tunnels, transport systems, hospitols, dining areas, command centers or basically underground citys. Our money built them, they will run there if the shit implodes. We are not card carrying elites are we, these underground rats nests are exclusive.
In Turkey, underground tunnels were discovered, miles of them thousand of years old, carved in stone. Living quarters, water entrys,Air supplys, livestock areas, etc,. These were not simply 200 underground cities at least two levels deep have been discovered in ... Entry is through tunnels that force one to almost crawl on occasion in order to be hidden..
The elites are privy to historical fact as  we the people have been kept in  a mental bubble  fed shiiit, like mushrooms. Even the Vatican has records, eyes only shiite. I can not imagine what the elite have,or the  so called collectors, super-rich have spent their life and fortunes paying for discoverys we will never see.
Just my oppinon...They may nuke a few areas that interfere with the goals and create terror and genocide on a controlled scale, however I have a gut feeling it will not be all out nuke war, other methods of human extermination don't mess with the green. Biowarfare, mass chemical infusion into specific areas, as one of the many.
Human nature, nievity,  psuedo beleifs, in some cases  upper crust religion, goverment infiltrators, have and the elitist have a keen knowledge of human nature, present tech, and historical facts we will never see.

A number of military citadels are known to have been constructed underground in central London, dating mostly from the Second World War and the Cold War. Unlike traditional above-ground citadels, these sites are primarily secure centres for defence coordination.
It is already well known that a large network of tunnels exists below London for a variety of communications, civil defence and military purposes.[1] [2] It is much less clear how these tunnels, and the various facilities linked to them, fit together, if at all. Even the number and nature of these facilities is unclear; only a few have been officially admitted to

The most important military citadel in central London—and arguably in Britain—is Pindar, a bunker built beneath the Ministry of Defence on Whitehall. Its construction, which took ten years and reportedly cost £126.3 million, finally came to a conclusion in 1994, but Pindar became operational two years earlier, in 1992. The high cost became the subject of some controversy in the early 1990s. Much of the cost overrun was related to the facility's computer equipment, which proved extremely difficult to install due to the very limited degree of physical access to the site.
Pindar's main function is to serve as a crisis management and communications centre, principally between the MOD headquarters and the actual centre of military operations, the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood. It is reported to be connected to Downing Street and the Cabinet Office by a tunnel under Whitehall.[3] In addition, despite rumours, armed Forces Minister Jeremy Hanley told the House of Commons on 29 April 1994 that "the facility is not connected to any transport system."[4]
Although Pindar is not open to the public, it has had some public exposure. In the 2003 BBC documentary on the Iraq conflict, Fighting the War, BBC cameras were allowed into the facility to film a small part of a teleconference between ministers and military commanders. Also, in 2008 the British photographer David Moore published his series of photographs, The Last Things, widely believed to be an extensive photographic survey of Pindar.[5]
The name Pindar is taken from the ancient Greek poet, whose house alone was left standing after his city was razed.

PINDAR is a secure government bunker complex, constructed in the 1990s beneath the Ministry of Defence headquarters on Whitehall in Central London.

The BBC bunker they don't want you to know about
Who knew that, 10 storeys beneath a Worcestershire hill, the corporation is ready for Armageddon?
By Matthew Bell
Sunday 31 October 2010

It all makes sense, once you know what you're looking at. The 200 acres of thickly wooded hillside, inaccessible by public footpath; the radio mast strategically poking out on top; the hidden entrance, just off the A44 near Evesham, in Worcestershire, surrounded by CCTV cameras and a high-security barrier. But to the passing motorist, there is nothing about Wood Norton Hall to identify it as the site of the BBC's secret nuclear bunker.

Who knew there even was such a thing? The BBC would certainly rather we didn't. It emerged recently that, from tomorrow, the continuity announcers at Radio 4 will decamp there for three weeks while a £1bn refurbishment is finished at Broadcasting House, London. However, a corporation source declined to confirm or deny the story. They would rather not discuss what goes on at Wood Norton, she said, and no, The Independent on Sunday was certainly not welcome to come and visit.
Buried 10 storeys into the hillside is a fully functioning nuclear bunker, built at great expense in 1966, at the height of the Cold War. So few people knew of its existence that, even when it was being built, visiting trainees were told not to ask why all that concrete was being mixed. Those involved in its construction were obliged to sign the Official Secrets Act, and even now you won't get a peep out of the BBC press office to acknowledge the reality.
Measuring 175ft long, the bunker – known to high command as Pawn: Protected Area Wood Norton – remains ready for service in the event of an attack on London. It is said to have beds and ping-pong tables and is connected by tunnels dug into the hillside to a mast on top of the hill which is fitted with a super high-frequency satellite dish.
According to the Government War Book, a Cold War document that was declassified only last year and which sets out what happens in the event of a nuclear strike, Wood Norton was a vital tool in keeping the country informed should chaos descend. While the Cabinet would be secreted away in another bunker in Corsham, Wiltshire, pre-recorded tapes kept at Wood Norton would be broadcast across the nation in the minutes before any bomb was dropped. It's a chilling scenario, one that has thankfully been relegated to a distant memory. The question is why now, 20 years on from the end of the Cold War, do we still have it?
The last time Wood Norton saw active service was late in 1999, when, according to locals, extra staff were drafted in and giant generators were put on standby to cope with the threat of the Millennium bug. Months later, Dyke would draw up his plans to sell, but it must have been with the memory of the bug that it was decided to keep 200 acres of Worcestershire hillside for the nation, with its tunnels, huts, satellite dishes, and masts. And, of course, the bunker. Just in case.
Subterranean Britain

* The Corsham bunker is spread over 34 acres outside Bath, Wiltshire. Built in 1957, it would accommodate the Prime Minister, his Cabinet and 6,000 government apparatchiks. It was only decommissioned in 2004.
* An underground tunnel linking 10 Downing Street to the Ministry of Defence was used as recently as May by Gordon Brown and Peter Mandelson during coalition negotiations after the election. Said to be part of a network of tunnels linking several government buildings, and even Buckingham Palace.
* The Kingsway tunnels beneath Holborn were built as an air raid shelter in 1942. Described as a "city under a city", it can house up to 8,000, and was used by Special Operations Executive as a base for covert operations during the war.
* In 1939, the National Gallery director Kenneth Clark oversaw the evacuation of all pictures to a slate mine near Bleanau Ffestiniog at Manod in Wales. Although the collection moved out in 1945, the mine was kept available throughout the Cold War until the 1980s.

The Globalists will never induce a successful nuclear war.

There are too many otherworlders that will not let Earth humanity end up with the same type of nuclear devastation like Mars and Mercury did.

This is generally unknown to the public and pisses off the Globalists in secret.

They will have to use a viral weapon via drones to achieve their NWO.

Not exactly deep undergound (or maybe some of it is? need to investigate further) the new NSA Data-mining repository... In Utah - (Mormon CIA/FBI/NSA Mafia connection? )

YouTube - NSA's Stellar Wind "Spy Center" aka Utah Data Center (
The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center (Watch What You Say)
By James Bamford

The spring air in the small, sand-dusted town has a soft haze to it, and clumps of green-gray sagebrush rustle in the breeze. Bluffdale sits in a bowl-shaped valley in the shadow of Utah’s Wasatch Range to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. It’s the heart of Mormon country, where religious pioneers first arrived more than 160 years ago.
Under construction by contractors with top-secret clearances, the blandly named Utah Data Center is being built for the National Security Agency. A project of immense secrecy, it is the final piece in a complex puzzle assembled over the past decade. Its purpose: to intercept, decipher, analyze, and store vast swaths of the world’s communications as they zap down from satellites and zip through the underground and undersea cables of international, foreign, and domestic networks. The heavily fortified $2 billion center should be up and running in September 2013.

Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.” It is, in some measure, the realization of the “total information awareness” program created during the first term of the Bush administration—an effort that was killed by Congress in 2003 after it caused an outcry over its potential for invading Americans’ privacy.
A short time later, Inglis arrived in Bluffdale at the site of the future data center, a flat, unpaved runway on a little-used part of Camp Williams, a National Guard training site. There, in a white tent set up for the occasion, Inglis joined Harvey Davis, the agency’s associate director for installations and logistics, and Utah senator Orrin Hatch, along with a few generals and politicians in a surreal ceremony.

Standing in an odd wooden sandbox and holding gold-painted shovels, they made awkward jabs at the sand and thus officially broke ground on what the local media had simply dubbed “the spy center.” Hoping for some details on what was about to be built, reporters turned to one of the invited guests, Lane Beattie of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Did he have any idea of the purpose behind the new facility in his backyard? “Absolutely not,” he said with a self-conscious half laugh. “Nor do I want them spying on me.”
Within days, the tent and sandbox and gold shovels would be gone and Inglis and the generals would be replaced by some 10,000 construction workers. “We’ve been asked not to talk about the project,” Rob Moore, president of Big-D Construction, one of the three major contractors working on the project, told a local reporter.

The plans for the center show an extensive security system: an elaborate $10 million antiterrorism protection program, including a fence designed to stop a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling 50 miles per hour, closed-circuit cameras, a biometric identification system, a vehicle inspection facility, and a visitor-control center
It needs that capacity because, according to a recent report by Cisco, global Internet traffic will quadruple from 2010 to 2015, reaching 966 exabytes per year. (A million exabytes equal a yottabyte.) In terms of scale, Eric Schmidt, Google’s former CEO, once estimated that the total of all human knowledge created from the dawn of man to 2003 totaled 5 exabytes. And the data flow shows no sign of slowing. In 2011 more than 2 billion of the world’s 6.9 billion people were connected to the Internet. By 2015, market research firm IDC estimates, there will be 2.7 billion users. Thus, the NSA’s need for a 1-million-square-foot data storehouse. Should the agency ever fill the Utah center with a yottabyte of information, it would be equal to about 500 quintillion (500,000,000,000,000,000,000) pages of text.

The data stored in Bluffdale will naturally go far beyond the world’s billions of public web pages. The NSA is more interested in the so-called invisible web, also known as the deep web or deepnet—data beyond the reach of the public. This includes password-protected data, US and foreign government communications, and noncommercial file-sharing between trusted peers. “The deep web contains government reports, databases, and other sources of information of high value to DOD and the intelligence community,” according to a 2010 Defense Science Board report. “Alternative tools are needed to find and index data in the deep web … Stealing the classified secrets of a potential adversary is where the [intelligence] community is most comfortable.”

With its new Utah Data Center, the NSA will at last have the technical capability to store, and rummage through, all those stolen secrets. The question, of course, is how the agency defines who is, and who is not, “a potential adversary.”

What the Prisoners really think...
What Nazi PoWs really thought

Scholars are scrutinising the conversations of thousands of PoWs who were bugged by the British in the Second World War - May 2009 .

A team of social psychologists and historians have launched an unprecedented investigation into the personal opinions of Second World War German
soldiers by peering into their innermost thoughts. By scrutinising millions of words’ worth of British military intelligence secret recordings of
German PoWs
, scholars are hoping to reconstruct the opinions and attitudes of the troops and airmen who fought for the Third Reich.

[ so how do we analyze all the comm data we are intercepting? oh... ]

Now, more than 60 years later, all key words and attitudes are being  ‘tagged’ and cross-referenced by the researchers in a computerised analysis of the prisoners’ opinions.

4.2 Earthquake in Eastern Missouri This Morning

30 minutes? That must be a typo and they meant 30 seconds.

Quake on Unknown Fault Rattles St. Louis
Jun 7, 2011 10:21 AM ET
By OurAmazingPlanet Staff

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck overnight near St. Louis, Mo., next to the notorious New Madrid seismic zone, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Residents reported shaking for up to 30 minutes, according to news reports. The quake struck about 3 miles (5 kilometers) underground and about 50 miles (82 km) southwest of St. Louis.

The rupture was on an unknown fault in the Illinois basin-Ozark dome region, which is adjacent to the more famous — and more seismically active — New Madrid seismic zone. About 200 years ago, the New Madrid zone unleashed a series of powerful earthquakes that downed trees and sent waves on the Mississippi River roaring over its banks.

The Illinois basin-Ozark dome region has never seen a quake that big. This region covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. The region has known faults but numerous smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected, according to the USGS.

Even the known faults are poorly located, so few earthquakes in the region can be linked to named faults and it is difficult to determine if a known fault is still active and could slip and cause an earthquake.

Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in the region each decade or two, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once or twice a year. The largest historical earthquake in the region (magnitude 5.4) damaged southern Illinois in 1968.

A multi-state earthquake drill was held in the region earlier this year to raise awareness of the fault systems and their potential to rupture.

Location of the Missouri Earthquake

A website that tracks earthquake,, posted some comments from users who reported feeling their homes and furniture shake:

"Chesterfield Missouri (IV MMI) : My dog was acting VERY weird for a good five minutes before We felt the noticeable amount of shaking. Very scary. The dog is still acting the same way, seems like she’s actually getting worse. Very antsy and nervous. Shaking a lot. Our home seems to be okay, but the dogs are going crazy!"

"Columbia Missouri : My bed trembled. I (am) about 120 miles northwest of Sullivan, MO."

"Jefferson City, Missouri : Felt the whole house and all the furniture shake here in Jefferson city!"

The quake was reportedly felt as far away as Illinois.

Crossrail: Where is it in the list of 'big digs'?
By William Kremer
BBC World Service

The tunnelling for Crossrail, London's new east-west rail network, is now in its most intense phase - and the scale of the engineering challenge is as jaw-dropping as the cost is eye-watering.

The tourists and shoppers in Red Lion Street in central London can have little idea that 30m under their feet something is going on, although people in buildings with deep foundations may feel a curious tingle.

Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), named Phyllis and Ada, are worming their way through the earth. Each one is the length of 14 London buses and weighs 1,000 tonnes.

Europe's largest current construction project is now halfway through, having absorbed over 25 million working hours and produced around eight miles of tunnels. Last year and this year the project supported the equivalent of 13,800 full-time jobs throughout the supply chain

When the project is completed in late 2019, the route will start in Maidenhead in Berkshire, stretch out a tentacle to Heathrow, then pass through central London before going on to Shenfield in Essex and Abbey Wood, near Greenwich. It will bring one and a half million people within a 45-minute travelling distance of central London.

The TBMs have tungsten carbide cutting tools on the face that cut away the ground, with the loose earth fed back down the machine on a conveyor belt. What happens to all that debris? Much of it - 4.5 million tonnes - will eventually form the new RSPB nature reserve of Wallasea Island.

Six of the most expensive tunnels

Thames Tunnel 1825-1843
Channel Tunnel 1988 - 1994
Jubilee Line extension 1993-1999
Boston's 'Big Dig' 1991-2006
The Gotthard Tunnel 2004-2016

The Yantai-Dalian Tunnel (proposed)

Blueprints exist for a 76.4-mile undersea tunnel linking the Chinese cities of Dalian and Yantai - over twice the length of the Channel Tunnel

Subterranean London is riddled with Tube tunnels, secret passages, Roman ruins, high-voltage cables, long-forgotten aquifers and deep building foundations. The route squirms past these obstacles, passing just 1.5m over the Tube's Northern Line.
Then there was the problem of bombs.

"It's estimated that there's about 17,000 tonnes of bombs that were dropped on London in WWII and the rule of thumb is about 10% failed to explode," says Simon Cooke from consultancy 6Alpha. While some bombs were removed, others were missed or even abandoned because they were too dangerous to deactivate
After the tunnelling concludes, some of the tunnel boring machines, which each cost £10m, will be lifted out in pieces. But where there is no nearby shaft to the surface that can't happen.

"Then it's not cost effective to dismantle the machine underground and it's quite risky for the workforce to do that," says Andy Alder. "So in those cases we would look to bury the TBM and leave it underground forever - we strip out all the valuable components, but the basic shell of the machine we'll leave underground."
Biggest digs

Thirlmere Aqueduct, England
At 95 miles, some consider this the longest tunnel in the world - a set of tunnels and pipes carry water from the Lake District to Manchester

Hawks Nest Tunnel, West Virginia, US
This three-mile tunnel, constructed as part of a hydroelectric project, possibly holds the record for most lives claimed during its construction - after mining silica without masks many workers died of silicosis - a congressional hearing placed the toll at 476, but it may have been higher

Seikan Tunnel, Japan
This tunnel, linking the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, is currently the world's deepest and longest railway tunnel at 240m below sea level and 33.5 miles long
The Williamson Tunnels, Liverpool, UK
Early 19th Century
Joseph Williamson, an eccentric industrialist, employed gangs to dig tunnels through sandstone for decades - without any apparent purpose, these may be the world's most pointless tunnels, although some believe the project's aim was simply to give employment

Ted Turner says he's 'recuperating well' after surgery in Argentina
By Alan Duke, CNN
updated 8:52 AM EDT, Tue March 11, 2014

(CNN) -- CNN and Turner Broadcasting System founder Ted Turner says he's "recuperating well" after falling ill South America.

Turner, 75, confirmed in a statement issued Monday that he "underwent a minor surgical procedure due to appendicitis" during a "brief hospital stay" in Argentina. Turner's spokesman previously declined to reveal why he was hospitalized last Friday, saying only that he was there "for observation."

Argentina's state-run Telam news agency reported Turner was initially treated in Bariloche, a lakeside city near the Chilean border, about 1,500 kilometers (940 miles) southwest of Buenos Aires. He was suffering from acute abdominal pain, according to clinic spokeswoman Paula Redondo.

Turner was flown later that morning to the capital of Buenos Aires to have surgery, according to Telam.

"I'm happy to report I'm recuperating well and looking forward to getting back to business as usual," Turner said Monday in his statement. "The doctors and medical staff at both hospitals in Bariloche and Buenos Aires were amazing and took really good care of me."
He said he was heading back to the United States

That Big Methane Release In The Southwest USSA [with links at blog]

I just noticed the unexpected news of a surprisingly large methane release in the Southwest USSA.

If you look at the graphic data display you immediately see that it greatly exceeds any other methane release in the continental USSA.

The story says the release of 1.3 million pounds of methane per year is due to leaks in the extraction of natural gas from coal beds in that region.

Could be. Maybe.

But there are other natural gas operations, other coal beds and coal mining regions elsewhere in continental North America, and nowhere else is this huge spike of methane release to be seen.
So is something else going on?

Things That Go Bump In The Night In The Four Corners

I lived in the Southwestern USSA for a big chunk of my previous life and so I have some first-hand knowledge of the New Mexico-Arizona-Colorado region. Just a short distance to the east of this huge, methane outgassing region right along the New Mexico-Colorado border lies the northern New Mexico town of Taos. I mention that, because some years back there were quite a number of stories in local and national news outlets about the so-called "Taos Hum."

Over an extended period of time, a lot of people heard a grinding, droning, humming sound that would go on and on for hours or days at a time, somewhat reminiscent of the sound of a powerful diesel engine idling or working under load.

The source of the infamous "Taos Hum" remains unexplained to this day.

Various explanations have been proffered, including the possibility that many people are hearing the low-frequency, grinding noises of the clandestine TBMs (tunnel boring machines) being used by the Shadow Government to make secret, subterranean tunnel networks. These machines can be quite huge, hundreds of feet long, with a gigantic, slowly rotating cutting head that is 40 or 50 feet in diameter, or even more, with thousands of horsepower. They are monster machines. They are real and they are in use all over the world making everything from subway/metro train tunnels, to railway and automobile tunnels, hydroelectric tunnels, deep mining tunnels, sewer, irrigation and municipal water supply tunnels, and also tunnels for deep underground, military projects.

Based on my research, I am open to the possibility that people are hearing heavy machinery at work deep underground, making secret tunnels and underground bases. I think it could be an explanation for some of these reports.

I document quite a lot of plans for underground excavation and construction of bases and tunnels and various underground and underwater facilities in my three books on the topic of underground and underwater bases and tunnels. The main thing is to understand that the technology and machinery, engineering expertise, funding and trained technical personnel to construct mammoth, highly sophisticated bases and tunnels deep underground and deep undersea have been in place for half a century. There is no science fiction involved. It is hard, engineering fact.

Underground Bases and Tunnels: What Is The Government Trying To Hide?

Underwater and Underground Bases

Hidden in Plain Sight: Beyond the X-Files

As regards the topic of clandestine, underground military projects this goes back to the World War II period, at least, and the impressively advanced, subterranean projects of the Third Reich, including the Regenwurmslager, and other major projects undertaken by the Organization Todt in the last part of the war, under the direction of Xaver Dorsch. My documentation, part of which I lay out in Hidden in Plain Sight: Beyond the X-Files, reveals that Dorsch was in USSA military custody after the war and was extensively debriefed. I suspect he probably consulted for the USSA military on their own secret, high-tech, massively financed program of clandestine underground bases and tunnels.

I say this because I cite two 1947 Project Paperclip memoranda in Hidden in Plain Sight: Beyond the X-Files, that explicitly mention Xaver Dorsch by name and ask for him and and other German underground base specialists to help the USSA military with their own "underground plant program."

I reproduce the Project Paperclip documents in the book. They are real enough. There is no guess work involved. I found them in the NASA historical archives in Washington, DC in 1997. I was actually looking for something else at the time, totally unrelated (as far as I know) to the USSA military's secret underground bases program(s). I guess the operative principle at work is: "Seek and ye shall find."

The memoranda establish that there is historical continuity between the NAZI underground bases program, and the USSA military's underground bases program, beginning in the immediate post-World War II period, via the agency of Project Paperclip, which was about so much more than just NAZI rocket science, though that was certainly one component.

Almost 70 years after World War II, there is still a great deal we do not know about the war's end and the numerous secret deals cut between various power factions in the collapsing Third Reich and various power factions in the USSA government and military-industrial-espionage-banking complex. What it gets down to is that the present governmental-military-industrial-espionage-banking system is a hybrid NAZI system.

We are under a sort of Neo-Fascist system. Anyone who doesn't recognize that is either in deeply ignorant denial, or willfully sucking hard at the system's bloody teats, or both.

Back To The Southwest USSA Anomalous Methane "Burp"

All of which, of course, brings up the issue as to whether the massive Southwest USSA methane release is possibly somehow related to an enormous clandestine, underground complex that the secret, Neo-Fascist, governmental-military-industrial-espionage-banking system may have constructed deep beneath the New Mexico-Colorado border.

I don't know. I simply raise the question. There are certainly a lot of rumors about secret underground bases and tunnels in that very region. I have heard my share.

Because of the scope of my research, it is clear that unknown trillions, not billions, but trillions of dollars (a trillion being a thousand dollars times a million dollars times another thousand) have disappeared into secret, Black Budget programs. My research also reveals that many thousands of trained personnel, advanced technology and advanced engineering capabilities for underground construction have been in play for the last several decades. Couple that with a sprawling, huge, so-called "national security" apparatus that operates on a rigidly compartmentalized, "need to know" basis, and almost any scenario is possible.

I cannot tell you with confidence everything that is happening underground. No one can, especially not the personnel in highly compartmentalized, secret programs. The mere fact of working within a rigidly controlled, highly compartmentalized, secret program severely restricts their information flow and their ability to communicate with other people.

Given the nature of contemporary society in the USSA I certainly just described a large number of people.  When the secrecy dam breaks, and I hope that it will, the masses of the people will be astonished at the enormity of what has been hidden from them.

We're living in a science fiction world, that's all I can tell you. That's the clear direction in which my research points. I doubt that we know even one percent of what is going on underground and undersea.

Another Possibility

I would be remiss if I did not point out that Arizona and New Mexico have many extinct and not-so-extinct volcanic sites. As you travel around both states you can find a great deal of evidence of past volcanic activity. There's a lot of it.

So, could this huge methane release possibly be deep underground outgassing related to deep Earth activity, potentially leading up to a major volcanic event in the Four Corners region?

I don't know, but given the plentiful evidence of past volcanic activity in that region of the continent, who can exclude the possibility of more volcanic activity in the future?

Stay tuned. We'll all find out together.

My Current Situation in Ecuador
After more than a year and a half, the shaman who assaulted me has been indicted and arraigned. In the first court hearing in August the presiding judge determined that there was sufficient evidence to proceed to a trial, which will occur next week. If my assailant is found liable for causing me bodily harm he is likely to be jailed.

I have no illusions about what I am up against. I was almost killed. I was hurt very badly. I was hospitalized for more than four months. I am still recuperating and receiving therapy more than twenty-one months later.

What happens in the Amazon is vitally important to what happens on this planet. The shamans of the region theoretically have an essential role to play in healing the Amazon and showing the way for humanity to deeply bond with the natural world -- but not if they themselves are abusive to the very people who come to the region to consult the sacred power plants in search of hyper-conscious communion with Mother Nature.

And so I gratefully accept your assistance. This is what I do. I write. I comment on the big issues of the day. I am an activist. That is why you come here. I certainly do need your support. For USA dollar contributions please e-mail me at:  and I will tell you how to send a donation.

The left figure is a slice through the Earth, taken from the figure on the right, showing the attenuation anomalies within the mantle at a depth of roughly 620 miles. In both images, red shows unusually soft and weak rock believed to be saturated with water, and the blue shows unusually stiff rock (yellow and white show near-average values).

Scientists scanning the deep interior of Earth have found evidence of a vast water reservoir beneath eastern Asia that is at least the volume of the Arctic Ocean.

The discovery marks the first time such a large body of water has found in the planet's deep mantle. [The World's Biggest Oceans and Seas]

The finding, made by Michael Wysession, a seismologist at Washington University in St. Louis, and his former graduate student Jesse Lawrence, now at the University of California, San Diego, will be detailed in a forthcoming monograph to be published by the American Geophysical Union.
Earth may have underground 'ocean' three times that on surface
Scientists say rock layer hundreds of miles down holds vast amount of water, opening up new theories on how planet formed

After decades of searching scientists have discovered that a vast reservoir of water, enough to fill the Earth’s oceans three times over, may be trapped hundreds of miles beneath the surface, potentially transforming our understanding of how the planet was formed.

The water is locked up in a mineral called ringwoodite about 660km (400 miles) beneath the crust of the Earth, researchers say. Geophysicist Steve Jacobsen from Northwestern University in the US co-authored the study published in the journal Science and said the discovery suggested Earth’s water may have come from within, driven to the surface by geological activity, rather than being deposited by icy comets hitting the forming planet as held by the prevailing theories.

“Geological processes on the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes or erupting volcanoes, are an expression of what is going on inside the Earth, out of our sight,” Jacobsen said.

“I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades.”

Jacobsen and his colleagues are the first to provide direct evidence that there may be water in an area of the Earth’s mantle known as the transition zone. They based their findings on a study of a vast underground region extending across most of the interior of the US
Rare Diamond Reveals Earth's Interior is All Wet
By Becky Oskin, Senior Writer   |   March 12, 2014 02:00pm ET

A battered diamond that survived a trip from "hell" confirms a long-held theory: Earth's mantle holds an ocean's worth of water.

"It's actually the confirmation that there is a very, very large amount of water that's trapped in a really distinct layer in the deep Earth," said Graham Pearson, lead study author and a geochemist at the University of Alberta in Canada. The findings were published today (March 12) in the journal Nature.

The worthless-looking diamond encloses a tiny piece of an olivine mineral called ringwoodite, and it's the first time the mineral has been found on Earth's surface in anything other than meteorites or laboratories. Ringwoodite only forms under extreme pressure, such as the crushing load about 320 miles (515 kilometers) deep in the mantle.

Billionaires' basements: the luxury bunkers making holes in London streets
Oliver Wainwright
Friday 9 November 2012 15.00 EST

A new billionaires' craze for building elaborate subterranean extensions is making swiss cheese of London's poshest streets – but at what cost?

Some 'iceberg houses' add underground extension that triple the size of the property, including everything from ballrooms and swimming pool to bowling alleys and vintage car garages. Illustration by Ben Hasler Guardian

Walking around the stuccoed streets of Kensington and Chelsea today, you are in for a surreal sight. The marching rows of doric columns, pedimented porticoes and dentilled cornices that define these imposing ranks of wedding-cake mansions have been joined by an unlikely addition to the classical architectural vocabulary.

Poking up at regular intervals, thrusting outwards from their moulded openings as if performing a salute to passers-by, are lines of angled conveyor belts. Slowly rumbling away, they reach high above the trees, pouring a continuous stream of rubble into the cradles of awaiting skips. You would be forgiven for thinking that the residents of the royal borough have established a kind of coal-mining cottage industry. Or maybe they're digging for gold?

"It is an absolute disgrace," says one elderly resident, out walking her freshly coiffed miniature poodle in between the rows of hoarded-off skips. "It feels like they've turned Kensington into a war zone."

The reason for all this quarrying is not the discovery of a coal-rich seam beneath the Wrenaissance streets, but the local enthusiasm for subterranean development. Over the past four years, this local authority alone has granted planning applications for more than 800 basement extensions, refused 90, and has a further 20 outstanding. It is the most densely populated borough in the country, with no room to build outwards, and no permission to build upwards – so the only way is down.

But this desire for digging isn't to everyone's liking. Last week a furore erupted when plans were released for a four-storey basement beneath a 19th-century schoolhouse in Knightsbridge, for Canadian former TV mogul David Graham.

Tripling the size of the property, this gargantuan pleasure cave would house a ballroom and swimming pool, with hot tub, sauna and massage room, as well as 15 bedrooms, seven bathrooms and 20 toilets, plunging deeper into the earth than the height of neighbouring homes.

"These plans are absolutely monstrous and unnecessary," said one neighbour, the Duchess of St Albans. "It's just absolute greed. No one needs that much space. Quite apart from that, the commotion is going to be dreadful."

"This is totally out of keeping with the relatively small size of other houses in the area," agreed a spokesman for the nearby Milner Street Area Residents Association. "Why should we all suffer just so one man can indulge his fantasy?"

Such fantasies are not restricted to this one man alone. The past five years have seen sprawling underground leisure lairs excavated across west London, from Knightsbridge to Belgravia, Fulham to Notting Hill. They contain playrooms and cinemas, bowling alleys and spas, wine cellars and gun rooms – and even a two-storey climbing wall. It is leading to a kind of iceberg architecture, a humble mansion on the surface just the visible peak of a gargantuan underworld, with subterranean possibilities only limited by the client's imagination.

William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, the fifth Duke of Portland, took over the estate of Welbeck Abbey in north Nottinghamshire when his father died in 1854, and began an eccentric reign of excavation. He dug an extensive web of tunnels beneath the grounds, connecting a series of underground chambers and stretching up to 24km – including a passage through which he could ride his carriage all the way to the station, hidden from public gaze.
A tunnel, more than one thousand yards in length, led from the house to the riding school. It was wide enough for several people to walk side by side. Parallel to it was another, more roughly constructed and used by workmen. A longer, more elaborate tunnel, one and a half miles long, intended as a carriage drive broad enough for two carriages to pass, led towards Worksop. This tunnel was abandoned in the late-19th century when a section forming part of the lake dam failed. Remaining stretches of tunnel survive on either side of the lake. The tunnel's skylights can be seen from the Robin Hood Way footpath which follows its course and a masonry entrance can be seen between two lodges at the northeastern limit of the park.

The 5th Duke excavated to create a number of extensions to the mansion. Although cited as being "underground rooms", these apartments are strictly "below ground", as they are not covered by earth or lawn; their flat roofs and skylights are visible in aerial photographs, although at ground level they are concealed from most directions by shrubbery. The largest is a great hall, 160 feet (49 m) long and 63 feet (19 m) wide intended as a chapel but used as a picture gallery and occasionally as a ballroom. There is a suite of five adjacent rooms constructed to house the duke's library.

Russia Building New Underground Nuclear Command Posts
U.S. intelligence detects dozens of hardened bunkers for leaders
BY:  Bill Gertz
August 15, 2016 5:00 am

Russia is building large numbers of underground nuclear command bunkers in the latest sign Moscow is moving ahead with a major strategic forces modernization program.

U.S. intelligence officials said construction has been underway for several years on “dozens” of underground bunkers in Moscow and around the country.

Disclosure of the underground command bunkers comes as Army Gen. Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of U.S. European Command, warned recently that Russia has adopted a nuclear use doctrine he called “alarming.”

“It is clear that Russia is modernizing its strategic forces,” Scaparrotti told a conference sponsored by the U.S. Strategic Command.

“Russian doctrine states that tactical nuclear weapons may be used in a conventional response scenario,” Scaparrotti said on July 27. “This is alarming and it underscores why our country’s nuclear forces and NATO’s continues to be a vital component of our deterrence.”

The new underground nuclear facilities appear similar to earlier construction for command and control complexes during the Cold War, one official said. Russia also continued building underground nuclear facilities after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The CIA reported through classified channels in March 1997 that construction included an underground subway system from the residence of then-President Boris Yeltsin outside Moscow to a leadership command center.

“The underground construction appears larger than previously assessed,” a CIA report on the facilities stated. “Three decrees last year [1996] on an emergency planning authority under Yeltsin with oversight of underground facility construction suggest that the purpose of the Moscow-area projects is to maintain continuity of leadership during nuclear war.”

Construction work was underway on what the report described as a “nuclear-survivable, strategic command post at Kosvinsky Mountain,” located deep in the Ural Mountains about 850 miles east of Moscow.

Satellite photographs of Yamantau Mountain, also located about 850 miles east of Moscow in the Urals near the town of Beloretsk, revealed development of a “deep underground complex” and new construction at each of the site’s above-ground support areas. Yamantau Mountain means “Evil Mountain” in the local Bashkir language.

“The command post at Kosvinsky appears to provide the Russians with the means to retaliate against a nuclear attack,” the CIA report said, adding that the Russians were building or renovating four complexes within Moscow that would be used to house senior Russian government leaders during a nuclear conflict.

The CIA identified a bunker to be used by Russian leaders at Voronovo, about 46 miles south of Moscow. A second bunker located at Sharapovo, some 34 miles from Moscow, was equipped with a special subway running directly to it.

Why you shouldn’t bury shipping containers for bunkers

Remember though, just because it’s metal doesn’t make it bullet-proof (one big advantage to an underground bunker) Don’t take my word for it, do some research specifically looking at the limitations and dangers of burying shipping containers for yourself instead of just looking at the cost savings. Structurally, pipes are MUCH better at withstanding pressure, from any direction. The problem is that they’re round and we like our stuff to be on flat floors with flat walls. If, however, you could put a rectangular shipping container into a cylindrical pipe underground, you’d be set structurally. You’d still have to deal with the fact that you’re buried underground though. Here’s a video of an example of one made out of metal:

Think it through. Have someone come take a look at your plans before you commit. Don’t be an idiot. A shipping container is a great starting point for an above-ground shelter or if you’re planning on adding a supporting structure to it (provided you’ve figured out all the tactics of being stuck in a hole in the ground with people who might want to get you out). It just might not be the cheapest way to go if you’re planning on burying it.

The biggest thing though is that if you’re trying to use it, or anything else, as a buried defensive bunker, you’d better have a hidden exit somewhere to get out if you’re found, and should be thinking about some serious camouflage around it for your entrance and vents. It would suck to spend all that money, planning, and time just to make yourself a ridiculously overly-complicated coffin. Underground shipping container bunkers are possible; just don’t think that all you have to do is dig a deep hole, drop a shipping container into it, bury it and decorate.

If you really want an underground bunker and you want to do it the right way, you should be talking to someone like Vivos Shelters or or someone else that has a lot of experience and references. Nothing says you can’t do all the research yourself but the point of a shelter is to keep you safe. It would kind of suck if your shelter were the very thing that got you hurt.

If you’re still considering building your own underground shelter, at least check out The Bomb Shelter Builders Book and get a good base of what to do, or even better, check out this page that has plans you can download to build one.

Why The Super-Rich Are Rushing To Buy Nuclear-Proof Bunkers
by Tyler Durden
Tue, 03/13/2018 - 02:00

Authored by Eric Zuesse via The Strategic Culture Foundation,

The rush amongst the super-rich started after the key event of 2014; this single stunning event suddenly sparked that rush by the super-rich to buy nuclear-proof bunkers, and the rush has been nonstop since that event. Though many news-media in The West have reported on the existence of this suddenly booming market for luxurious and supposedly nuclear-proof bunkers, none has reported on what actually caused it — the event that had sparked it.

In fact, that event is still a secret in The West — not publicly mentioned here; it is, practically speaking, bannedfrom being publicly even mentioned, in The West. So: since that event is necessarily mentioned in this article, and is even linked-to here, so that the reader can see videos of it that were posted of it online while it was happening, and there is even “smoking gun” evidence showing government officials actually planning it, and covering it up, and blatantly lying about what they had done, this report, explaining why the super-rich rush now to buy nuclear-proof bunkers, violates that ban. As a consequence, probably none of the hundreds of major news-media in The West that this news-report is being submitted to for publication, will publish it. But perhaps a half-dozen of the small ones will publish it. After all: a few small news-media cannot have much impact. The government and media don’t need to fool everyone in order to succeed, but only to fool the vast majority of people. (However, maybe now they don’t any longer even need to continue worrying about public opinion, at all. So: maybe they no longer need to continue such bans. But they do continue them, perhaps simply out of institutionalized bad habit.)

Wherever you’re so fortunate as to be reading this: here is the reason why the market for luxurious deep-underground nuclear-resistant bunkers has so suddenly blossomed:

In February 2014, an extremely violent, and US-engineered but ‘democracy’-masked, coup in Ukraine on Russia’s very doorstep, was successfully culminated by its overthrowing Ukraine’s neutralist and democratically elected leader, and then by its installing there a rabidly anti-Russian government, out for Russian blood, just like Hitler had been, and, in fact, strongly inspired by him, in many ways, including an ethnic-cleansing campaign. Within less than a month, Russia responded to that coup by accepting the still predominantly Russian Crimea back into Russia. (Crimea had been part of Russia until the Soviet dictator had arbitrarily transferred it to Ukraine in 1954.) For Russia’s having done that, US President Barack Obama (and America’s foreign vassals) slapped economic sanctions against Russia and mobilized NATO troops and weaponry onto and near Russia’s borders — as if they wanted to out-do 1962’s Cuban Missile Crisis, which they are doing, but in reverse direction (against not America, but, this time, against Russia).

Ever since that singular 2014 event — that coup (which destroyed Ukraine) — the hottest market amongst the super-rich has been nuclear-resistant bunkers deep underground: such as here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here.

I think that the three best of these articles about luxury nuclear bunkers, are this (with the best pictures of one of these facilities) and this (with the best commentary about the entire phenomenon), and this, which discusses the increasing number of builders of these facilities. Some billionaires, however, are instead moving to New Zealand.

So: ever since 2014, private planning to survive a nuclear war is the most booming field amongst the super-rich. This is a real-estate market that no ordinary person could afford to buy into. These people are either principals themselves in the aristocracy, or else prime agents for them and thus likewise extremely wealthy and already well on their own personal ways to entering the aristocracy — the aristocracy of extreme wealth. They’re thus all well-connected; they’ve got the best contacts and sources inside governments. And, since 2014, they are rushing to prepare: to prepare for a nuclear war.

If these people aren’t well-informed about the global situation, then no one is. And they’re investing accordingly. Lots of people invest in stocks, bonds, gold, etc, but only the richest few can afford to invest in nuclear-resistant bunkers, and that’s where the boom nowadays especially is, amongst only the super-rich. (We’re not talking here about high government-officials; they’ve got their Spartan nuclear bunkers long-since paid for by US taxpayers; but these are all just private and extremely wealthy individuals.) Maybe their attitude is: if you’ve got three-or-more homes, then at least one of them should be designed for the post-WW-III world and near enough to your main home so that maybe you can reach it before any missiles will be flying.

A nuclear war between US and Russia would be over within less than 30 minutes, start-to-finish; so, there won’t be any time to plan if the nuclear phase of the NATO-v.-Russia (plus, maybe China) war appears to be imminent — waiting that long in order to depart for one’s private bomb-shelter would already be too late.
'The ultimate doomsday escape': California entrepreneur builds $1billion bunker for millionaires in German village in event of an apocalypse - and where survivors can live a year without leaving

Vivos Europa One shelter, in Rothenstein, Germany, was unveiled by Vivos founder, Robert Vicinio, on Friday
Consists of a planned survival complex that is comparable to billionaire's mega-yacht or mansion - but much bigger
Boasts swimming pools, theaters, gyms, restaurants, custom apartments, outdoor space and helicopter service
But it can also apparently withstand nuclear blast, chemical agents, earthquakes, tsunamis, or another disaster
Although the cost per apartment remains unclear, the property is valued at $1.1bn (its original value was $225m)
Underground shelter is currently in 'turnkey operational condition'; residents are accepted based on their 'skills'

Tech Titans Plot Their Doomsday Escape to New Zealand Luxury Bunkers
Wealthy Americans have stepped up investment in the island nation. Parliament votes to ban foreigners from buying bolt-hole homes.
By Olivia Carville
September 5 2018

Years of doomsday talk at Silicon Valley dinner parties has turned to action.

In recent months, two 150-ton survival bunkers journeyed by land and sea from a Texas warehouse to the shores of New Zealand, where they?re buried 11 feet underground.

Seven Silicon Valley entrepreneurs have purchased bunkers from Rising S Co. and planted them in New Zealand in the past two years, said Gary Lynch, the manufacturer?s general manager. At the first sign of an apocalypse ? nuclear war, a killer germ, a French Revolution-style uprising targeting the 1 percent ? the Californians plan to hop on a private jet and hunker down, he said.
