I have a 20 gauge shotgun and am having trouble finding #3 buckshot at local stores.  I can only find game/target loads.  My question is:  If you had no choice in buying ammo for your shotgun, what type would you get for home defense?  What is needed to repell a home invader bent on robbing and possibly doing you harm?

If you can't get buckshot then buy slugs. If you can't get slugs then get the biggest shot you can find ie.. BBB, BB, or #1. Check to see if your receiver is marked as taking 3in. magnums. If it is buy the longer shells accordingly. Also check to see what choke is in the barrel, and select the proper choke for the load you're shooting. Always a good idea to test fire different load and choke combo's to find out what patterns the best out of your gun.

In the end though I would really stick with buckshot. If you have to get one of the stores in your area to order it, then do it. Main reason I say that is because buckshot is the best of both worlds in close encounters. It delivers stopping power, but doesn't tend to over penetrate.

You might check gun shows as well. There is a wide variety of specialty loads available there.

The target loads will work for home defense until you can find exactly what you are looking for. I don't know of many home invaders who take a shotgun blast to the face and still rob you; no matter what size shot you use. Inside the average home the maximum distance might reach 10 yards, at that range target loads will do the trick.

So you really think small game shot will still deter an attacker?  Huh

Hopefully small game will deter and not kill.

If it's all that you have handy, small game loads at close quarters will kill, but you must aim for the head. Center of mass shots will have less of an effect, especially if the assailant is wearing thick clothing. Always best to stick with #4 Buckshot for home defense. Slugs are ok also, but they tend to over penetrate at short ranges. Last thing you want is a round punching through the target and a wall, hitting someone you would rather not have hit.

The heaviest buck shot you can find, like 00 buck for a 12ga., not sure what that equivalent would be for a 20 gauge! I know for the 12ga. you can get law enforcement loads (2 3/4", 9 pellet, 1200+fps muzzle velocity) on the internet that will make a bad guy take a "dirt nap" in a hurry!!!!!

Most definitely. When you think about it, small game shot can kill a rabbit or squirrel their hide is thicker than a humans. What don't penetrate skin will still sting like hell not to mention the force of the blast.

I agree and I plan on getting both buck shot and game shot.

At the typical ranges encountered in home defense, you could use just about any shot at short range as it will be "en mass" and act like a single projectile. After about ten yards(33 feet) you will have enough separation of the shot to start making a difference. Go to the range and pattern your gun

In light of the growing scarcity of ammo I would say any ammo is better than no ammo. Buy what you can afford as you find it available, don't be too choosy for the longer you wait the less there will be. Shotgun ammo is devastating out to 45 feet (15 yds) no matter the shot size, of course the larger the shot more range you have, but any is as said, better than none.

I found this while looking for 20 gauge buckshot and found it an eye opener.  This is why I would rather buy buckshot than target load or anything less - http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot22.htm

Thanks for that post I didn't realize there was that big a difference in stopping power between buck and bird for the 20 guage. I'll have to get some buck for mine.
