Medics tell Press TV they have found traces of depleted uranium in some Gazan residents wounded in Israel's ground offensive into the strip.

Norwegian medics told Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari that some of the victims who have been wounded since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip on December 27 have traces of depleted uranium in their bodies.

The report comes after Israeli tanks and troops swept across the border into Gaza on Saturday night, opening a ground operation after eight days of intensive attacks by Israeli air and naval forces on the impoverished region.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Sunday that the wide-ranging ground offensive in the Gaza Strip would be "full of surprises."

A ground offensive in the densely-populated Gaza is expected to drastically increase the death toll of the civilian population.

The latest assaults bring the number of Palestinians killed to over 488 with 2790 others wounded. The UN says that about 25 percent of the casualties were civilian deaths - including at least 34 children.

According to Israeli army officials, at least 30 of its soldiers have been wounded since the start of the ground campaign.

Amid global condemnation of the ongoing violence in the region, the UN Security Council failed to agree on a united approach to resolve the crisis.

" Once again, the world is watching in dismay the dysfunctionality of the Security Council," UN General Assembly chief Miguel d'Escoto said Sunday.

According to diplomatic sources, the US blocked a Security Council resolution, with US Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff arguing that an official statement that criticizes both Israel and Hamas would not be helpful.

The White House has so far declined to comment on whether an Israeli ground incursion into Gaza is a justified measure.

BRITISH and American coalition forces are using depleted uranium (DU) shells in the war against Iraq and deliberately flouting a United Nations resolution which classifies the munitions as illegal weapons of mass destruction.

DU contaminates land, causes ill-health and cancers among the soldiers using the weapons, the armies they target and civilians, leading to birth defects in children.

Professor Doug Rokke, ex-director of the Pentagon's depleted uranium project -- a former professor of environmental science at Jacksonville University and onetime US army colonel who was tasked by the US department of defense with the post-first Gulf war depleted uranium desert clean-up -- said use of DU was a 'war crime'.

Rokke said: 'There is a moral point to be made here. This war was about Iraq possessing illegal weapons of mass destruction -- yet we are using weapons of mass destruction ourselves.' He added: 'Such double-standards are repellent.'

Why Weapons Containing Depleted Uranium Are Illegal

There are two ways to determine if the use of a particular weapon in military operations is illegal. The easiest way is if the weapon is used in violation of a treaty that forbids its use and the State using it is a party to that treaty. If there is no treaty on a specific weapon, then one must determine if the use of that weapon would violate existing rules and principles of binding humanitarian (armed conflict) law. Under these rules (the "weapons test") – derived from The Hague Conventions, the Geneva Conventions, and all other sources of military law – a weapon may be banned if:

(1) it has harmful effects outside the legal field of battle (the "geography" test);
(2) it has harmful effects after the war is over (the "time" test);
(3) its use is unduly inhuman or causes undue suffering (the "humaneness" test); or
(4) it has a harmful effect on the environment (the "environment" test). The first two tests arise from the requirement that weapons may not be indiscriminate. Because there is no specific weapon treaty forbidding the use of depleted uranium, the illegality of DU must be shown by the second method.

Weaponry containing depleted uranium (DU) fails all four tests. It is indiscriminate in geography as the effects of DU weapons cannot be contained to the legal military targets. Instead is air-born far afield of legal targets to illegal (civilian) targets: hospitals, schools, civilian dwellings and even neighboring countries with which the user is not at war. DU weapons are indiscriminate in time, and cannot be "turned off" when the war is over. Even with rigorous clean-up of war zones, the air-born particles have a half life of billions of years and can keep killing and injuring former combatants and non-combatants long after the war is over. DU weapons "kill" in inhumane ways, causing cancers, kidney problems, eye problems, lung diseases, and according to the medical researchers who have investigated it, many other serious conditions. Additionally, DU weapons cause disabilities in the children of those exposed – cranial-facial anomalies, missing limbs, grossly deformed and non-viable infants and the like – so in this sense are tetragenic. As these conditions can occur to non-combatants or may arise long after military operations have concluded, DU weapons are necessarily inhumane. The tetragenic nature of DU weapons raises the possibility of a genocidal effect. Finally, DU weapons unduly contaminate the natural environment, including water and agricultural land necessary for the subsistence of the civilian population for beyond the lifetime of that population.

Israel allowed a convoy of humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip, as it pressed on with a massive offensive on Hamas.

Israeli warplanes have carried out intensive raids on Hamas targets as ground troops surround Gaza's main city.

The senior Hamas leader in Gaza promised 'victory is coming' for the Islamist group, but Israel's defence minister said 'we have hit Hamas hard' while insisting the operation to halt Hamas rocket attacks would continue.

Israel, under pressure over the mounting toll on civilians, agreed to let food and fuel into Gaza, but about 200 trucks were stuck at the border as the military said no one had turned up to receive the supplies.

Thousands of ground troops intensified their move into the Palestinian enclave of 1.5 million people, battling Hamas fighters in the east of the territory as they tightened their grip around Gaza City.

Israeli jets carried out more than 30 air strikes. The military said they hit a mosque in the northern town of Jabaliya 'where arms were being stored, as well as houses containing arms caches and vehicles that were transporting rocket launchers and armed men.'

Naval ships off the coast also bombarded targets to help the ground force advance launched on Saturday night.

The Israeli strikes killed another 14 Palestinians, including five children, on Monday, medics said.

Three children were killed by a tank shell in Zeitun and two were killed in Shati by a naval strike, according to the head of Gaza medical emergency services, Moawiya Hassanein.

More than 520 Palestinians - including at least 90 children - have been killed since Israel launched Operation Cast Lead on December 27, with about 2,500 wounded.

Israel says dozens of Hamas fighters have been killed, while one Israeli soldier has been reported dead and 55 wounded since Saturday.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak told parliament the Hamas war would go on.

'Gaza City is partially surrounded,' Barak told deputies. 'We have hit Hamas hard, but we have not yet reached all the goals that we have set for ourselves and the operation continues,' he said.

'We are doing everything that a state must do to protect its citizens,' he said. 'We want that the attacks against our citizens and our soldiers stop.'

Three civilians and one soldier have been killed by rockets fired from Gaza since Israel's operation started. More than 10 rocket and missile attacks were reported Monday.

Hamas remained defiant. 'Victory is coming, God willing,' the movement's senior leader in Gaza, Mahmud Zahar said in a television address.

Israel faces intense international pressure to agree a ceasefire and ease the suffering of the Gaza population which has no power or water supplies and endures a daily struggle to get food, according to aid agencies.

Israel agreed to let 200 trucks cross into Gaza on Monday but the military said no one turned up on the Palestinian side to receive the supplies.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was due to hold talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Monday on ways to seek a ceasefire.

An EU ministerial delegation and a Russian envoy were also due in the region. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called off a trip to China because of the Gaza crisis.

France's Sarkozy was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in Ramallah, after a first meeting with Egyptian counterpart, Hosni Mubarak, in Cairo.

Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, is heading a delegation to the Middle East, while Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's Middle East envoy, Alexander Saltanov, was also on the way.

The European Union and Russia are both part of the Middle East diplomatic Quartet, along with the United Nations and the United States.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Sunday he would be working with key players on ways to end the violence.

The Israeli offensive has sparked spiralling anger in the Muslim world and protests across the globe.

Gaza wounded dying because ambulances can't reach them: Red Cross

GENEVA (AFP) — People wounded in fighting in the Gaza Strip are dying because ambulances cannot reach them, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Monday.

"The situation is extremely dangerous and the coordination of ambulance services is very complex because of the incessant attacks and military operations," ICRC spokeswoman Dorothea Krimitsas said in Geneva.

"Wounded people have died while waiting for Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances," she added.

The International Committee of the Red Cross was also concerned about water supplies in the densely populated coastal strip.

Krimitsas said two out of the 45 wells in the Gaza Strip were out of action after having been hit during Israeli air raids, while the pumps on eight others were no longer working because of power cuts.

"Half a million people, that's about one third of the population of the territory, are threatened with being completely deprived of water," she said.

Krimitsas said technicians needed to gain access to the electrical installations damaged during the fighting.

A team of four ICRC medical staff, including a surgeon, were allowed into the Gaza Strip from Israel on Monday after three days' delay, the relief agency said.

They are due to help staff at the territory's Shifa hospital carry out complex operations on the wounded. The medical team also brought in tetanus vaccines for children and blood supplies, Krimitsas said.

I find it quite Ironic that Al-CIA-duh would have a pact with Israel, but 'attack the US'. It sounds ludicrous, doesn't it? There were reports of fierce fighting in northern Gaza as news began to emerge of the scale of the problems facing medical staff in the territory.
   

Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert, one of two foreign doctors working at Gaza's biggest hospital, al-Shifa, said they had received a "new wave" of very serious injuries on Monday.

"We have many amputations, head injuries, and of course for a hospital in this situation... it's extremely difficult to handle," he told the BBC.

He warned that the hospital would be unable to operate much longer unless it received fresh medical supplies.

"People are dying now because of lack of supplies. We have all operating rooms full. Yesterday we were operating on two patients in one operating room... This is a complete disaster".

Israel has insisted that it is not targeting civilians and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields by operating in densely populated areas.

But Dr Gilbert said the overwhelming majority of casualties he had treated were civilians.

"Among all the hundreds we have seen so far, we have seen two fighters," he said.

He said that women and children alone made up 25% of the death toll, and 45% of the wounded.

The Israeli army said it had hit 40 targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday, including several tunnels and the homes of a number of Hamas officials.

But information about what is happening is limited as Israel has barred foreign reporters from entering Gaza.

Fighting was reported around Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya, and Gaza city itself - a little further south - was said to have been encircled.

The BBC's Hamada Abu Qammar in Gaza said residents on the edges of Gaza City were heading into the city centre seeking safe places away from the fighting.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said Hamas had suffered a "hard blow" but insisted the offensive in Gaza would continue.

"We still haven't reached our objectives," Mr Barak told Israeli MPs.

The top Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Mahmud Zahar, told Palestinians in a televised address that they were headed for "victory" against Israel.

Israelis "have legitimised the murder of their own children by killing the children of Palestine", he said.

The Israeli army said Palestinian militants had fired 20 missiles into southern Israel on Monday.

Humanitarian crisis

For the people of Gaza, living conditions are deteriorating sharply. Supplies of fuel, food, water, and wheat are said to be running desperately low.

A spokesman for Unrwa, the UN aid agency for the Palestinians, said food was urgently needed and people were facing "serious hunger", with supplies for just 48 hours.

"One million people are without electricity. Crucially the hospitals in Gaza are running on emergency generators. This in my book amounts to a humanitarian crisis," Christopher Gunness told the BBC.

Israel said it had allowed a convoy of 80 lorries carrying food and medicines through Gaza's southern frontier.

Away from the front line, diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting in the Gaza Strip have been moving into high gear.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy held talks with Palestinian leaders in the West Bank town of Ramallah at the start of a series of meetings across the Middle East.

In remarks broadcast on French radio, he "condemned" the Israeli ground offensive but said Hamas had also "acted in an irresponsible and unforgivable manner" by ending a six-month ceasefire with Israel and resuming firing rockets.
   

US President George W Bush also blamed the current situation on Hamas militants and said he understood "Israel's desire to protect itself".

An EU delegation held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in Jerusalem, calling for a "cease-fire at the earliest possible moment".

But Ms Livni appeared to rebuff the call, saying: "When Israel is being targeted, Israel is going to retaliate."

"Israel is going to give an answer to it because this is an ongoing, long battle, war, against terror."

At the United Nations in New York, Arab ministers are pushing for a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to attend a meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday to discuss the situation.

Doctor Mads Gilbert is a member of a Norwegian triage medical team present in the besieged Gaza Strip. The team has exposed that Israel has used depleted uranium weapons in its war on the impoverished territory which is home to 1.5 million Palestinians. He described the conditions inside Gaza in an exclusive Press TV interview.

Press TV: What can you tell about the uranium findings?

Dr. Mads Gilbert:The findings about the uranium I cannot tell you much about, but I can tell you that we have clear evidence that the Israelis are using a new type of very high explosive weapons which are called Dense Inert Metal Explosive (DIME) and are made out of a tungsten alloy.

These weapons have an enormous power to explode.

The power of the explosion dissipates very quickly and the strength does not travel long, maybe 10 meters, but those humans who are hit by this explosion, this pressure wave are cut in pieces.

This was first used in Lebanon in 2006, it was used here in Gaza in 2006 and the injuries that we see in Shifa [Hospital] now, many many of them I suspect and we all suspect are the effect of DIME weapons used by the Israelis.

On the long term, these weapons will have a cancer effect on those who survive. They will develop cancer we suspect. There has been very little research on this but some research has been among other places in the United States, which show that these weapons have a high tendency to develop cancer. So they kill and those who survive risk having cancer.

Press TV: And what do you have to say about this?

Dr. Mads Gilbert:All that is happening in Gaza here now is against international law, it is against humanity and I think it is against what it means to be a decent person. You don't treat other people like this. Even if you disagree with him… maybe even if you fight with them, you don't treat civilians, children and women like this.

And I have an appeal to the Israeli doctors and nurses. They are my colleagues. We belong to the same international community, the medical community. I wish that the good doctors and nurses in Israel tell their government to stop these atrocities. We cannot continue with this. We may differ in opinions, but you cannot treat the civilian Palestinian population in Gaza in this way.

Today, they were bombing in Gaza City; we received 150 wounded and more than 50 killed.

Press TV: Only at Shifa?!

Dr. Mads Gilbert:Yes, here in Shifa. I treated a ten-year-old boy. He had his whole chest filled with fragments from the bomb. On his lap was another person's leg that had been cut off. We resuscitated him and did everything we could do to save his life but he died between our hands.

This is such a terrible experience and behind the numbers that you report all the time, there are human beings, families, women, grandmothers, children. That is in fact the reality in this situation. Those who are paying the price for the Israeli bombardments now are the common people, the Palestinian people.

Half of the population in Palestine are below 15 years and 80 percent of the people in Gaza live below the level of poverty defined by the UN. Now they don't have food, they don't have electricity. It's cold they don't have warmth and in addition to that, they are killed.

This must be stopped.

Press TV How many people did you see that are effected by this weapon?

Dr. Mads Gilbert: Almost all of the patients we have received have these sever amputations. They seem to have been affected by this kind of weapon. Of course, we have many fragment injuries and burns but those who have got their limbs cut off, constitutes quite a large proportion.

You know we have a lot to do. Palestinian doctors, nurses and paramedics do an incredibly heroic job to save their people. Doctor Eric and I are just a small drip in the ocean, but we learn from them. Unfortunately, we don't have the time to do research, we have to save lives, but this question should be researched by the international community.

Media blackout continues; no foreign journalists let into Gaza

Bethlehem - Ma’an/Agencies - Despite a 1 January decision to allow foreign journalists into Gaza, not one has been able to enter the area.

A petition was handed to the Israeli High Court by the Foreign Press Association in Israel, demanding that Israel cease their media blackout in Gaza, imposed since early November.

Israeli officials announced on New Year’s Day that they would allow eight journalists at a time into the Gaza Strip through the northern Erez crossing, "When it is open."

The crossing was open briefly when Israel allowed almost 250 Gazans holding foreign passports to leave the area, but denied access to the journalists wishing to enter the Strip. Israeli sources said officers at the crossing were too busy processing the Gazans leaving the area to work on allowing access to the foreign press.

A small handful of international journalists are currently in Gaza, having refused to leave the area despite Israeli warnings that the crossings would be closed and they would be unable to leave. Several international news agencies have hired local journalists to report from the area, since they are prohibited from leaving the area by Israel.

The foreign journalists who demanded access to the Gaza Strip are for the most part now reporting from the border area outside Gaza.

The FPA demanded that journalists be allowed into the area, and accused Israel of allowing reporters to cover only "one side" of the conflict.

The organization was responsible for compiling a list of journalists to be allowed into Gaza, and confirms that not one has been allowed in despite thorough security checks. The FPA will not make the names public until the journalists are safely in Gaza.

Major fightings begin in Gaza City

A fierce battle has erupted in Gaza City as the Israeli army engages in heavy exchanges of fire with Hamas resistance fighters.

The fighting broke out in the vicinity of Gaza City on Monday for the first time since the Israeli military crossed over the border on Saturday, beginning an incursion into the costal sliver.

According to AFP, large explosions and heavy exchanges of fire rocked eastern neighborhoods of Gaza City, as attacks on the densely-populated strip continues for a tenth day.

The Israeli army has reportedly prepared to face strong resistance in the city.

At least 50 Israeli troops have been wounded in the Operation Cast Lead; one has been killed and five others are reported in serious conditions.

Meanwhile, some 551 Palestinians have lost their lives, and at least 2,790 others are wounded -- most of whom are civilians.

Despite international calls for an immediate halt to the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said earlier Monday that the ground incursion would be continued until the objectives are reached.

"Hamas has suffered a very heavy blow, but we have yet to reach the goals we set for ourselves, so the operation continues. International talks are being held simultaneously," Barak said.

Tel Aviv says through its military campaign, it aims to force Hamas stop its rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Hamas, the democratically-elected government of the strip, is said to agree to stop its retaliatory attacks should Tel Aviv lift its 18-month blockade of the coastal sliver.

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli blockade since the Hamas movement won a majority in the 2006 Palestinian election and took control of the area in mid-June 2007.
