Gaza – Ma’an – Death shrouds the hallways of Gaza City’s Ash-Shifa medical compound Saturday, its smell creeping in from all corners.

Amputated bodies are strewn throughout hallways because morgues in the city can no longer accommodate the dead

In one corner a man stands with his seven year old son in a cardboard box because the hospital ran out of sheets to cover the dead with. This is how he will carry him home and bury him.

Another man stands dazed, in shock after watching his son Mohammed killed during his graduation ceremony at the de facto police headquarters. The father of one of Mohammed’s classmates stood next to his son as he was decapitated. The man is still screaming.

In the packed hospital waiting room a mother sits silently staring into the distance; her son was pronounced dead shortly after she brought him in.

Despite the ugly scene at the medical compound people poured in, seeming not to notice the horror of blood and body parts they hurriedly try to pick out clothing or personal items of loved ones hit by Israeli missiles somewhere in the Gaza Strip.

Twelve year old Ayaman is screaming at his father who tries to prevent him from seeing the bodies of his uncle and brother, torn to pieces under sheets. “I’m not afraid to see them,” he screamed. In a rage as his father holds tight, Ayman catches the hand of a resistance fighter; “shell and kill them as they did to us,” he says.

I'm not trying to vindicate the Israeli's in any measure, what they are doing to the Palestinians are atrocious.  However I will comment that this is also a two sided issue - with Hamas more than willing to cash in on this for political currency, by making sure to show all the kids being blown up.

Gazans cannot get out of Gaza,they have been under siege for the last 6 months.Do you know how big Gaza is? if you did you would know there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide,the children that died yesterday were not forewarned,the timing of the attack just happened to be when most children were on the street.If you are suggesting that children are being deliberately put in harms way then i am sorry but you are a f**king idiot.Maybe you should stop reading CNN and read a book.

Massacres were part and parcel of the Zionist project in Palestine. They aimed at intimidating the Arabs and make them leave the country.

Dozens of massacres were committed against the Arabs starting with the Massacre at Baldat al-Shaikh in December 1947 and not ending with the massacres in Qana in South Lebanon in 1996 and 2006.

Another brutal massacre is being committed in Gaza today. Hundreds of Palestinian Arabs have been killed and/or wounded.

Given below, is a list of some of the massacres committed by the Zionists since 1947:

Massacre in Baldat al-Shaikh (31 December 1947): Haganah gang members stormed the village of Baldat al-Shaikh in pursuit of unarmed citizens. The death toll was about 600 people, most of whose corpses were found inside the houses of the village.

Massacre in Deir Yassin (10 April 1948): A brutal massacre was committed in Deir Yassin: over 250 men, women and children were killed.

Massacre in Lid (11 July 1948): A commando unit led by Moshe Dayan carried out this massacre. The unit stormed the city in the evening and many of the Arab citizens of the city took refuge from the attack in the Dahmash Mosque. The Zionists reached the mosque and killed 176 civilians who took refuge to the mosque raising the victims of the massacre in Lid to 426 Palestinian Arabs.

Once the slaughter had come to an end, the unarmed civilians were led to the city’s sports stadium, where the young men were detained. Then the families were given a mere half-hour to leave the city for the area where the Jordanian Army was located. They were to go there on foot and without food or water, which caused the deaths of many women, children and elderly people.

Massacre in the Village of Eilaboun (30 October 1948): The village was attacked on October 29, 1948. The Israeli forces managed to enter the town at five o’clock a.m. on October 30.

The people of Elabun took refuge in the two local churches where yellow and white flags of submission were flown. Marcos Daoud, the Greek Catholic priest, told the Israelis, "I put my village under the protection of the State of Israel". The Israeli answer was as follows:

1. Thirteen young men were murdered.

2. The surviving young men were taken as POWs.

3. The women and children were marched off to the Lebanese border under severe conditions, which resulted in many casualties.

4. Looting and desecration of the churches followed the evacuation of the village.

Massacre in Dawayma (15 October 1948): Operation Ten Plagues was launched against the Egyptians in the South. Mass murder took place in many of the towns on the southern front during the October offensive. One of the worst massacres during the offensive took place at Dawayma.

The American Consul in Jerusalem, William Burdett, had heard about the visit of the UN team to Dawayma. After making inquiries, on 6 November, he reported to Washington, "Investigation by UN indicates massacre occurred but observers are unable to determine number of persons involved". Estimates vary considerably but probably about 300 Arab civilians were slaughtered in the town.

The Massacre at Qibya (14 October 1953): The fatalities from the massacre numbered 67, including men, women and children, while hundreds of others were injured.

The Massacre at Kufr Qasim (29 October 1956): A curfew was imposed on the village of Kufr Qasim, after which a number of children and elderly people took off to inform the young men who were working in the fields outside the village about the curfew. However, the forces stationed outside the village killed them in cold blood, murdering the young men before they could reach the village. The death toll for this massacre came to 49 civilians, including a number of children and elderly people.

Massacre at Sabra and Shatila (18 September 1982): A plan had been laid to storm the Sabra and Shatila camps for Palestinian refugees in the Beirut area since the first day of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Its purpose was to weaken the Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut and force the Palestinians to emigrate outside Lebanon.

Before sundown on Thursday, September 16, 1982, the storming of the camps began. The massacre itself, which was carried out by the Lebanese kata’ib (Falangist) militia, continued for approximately 36 hours. During the operation, the Israeli army surrounded the camps, preventing anyone from entering or leaving. In addition, the occupation soldiers set off incandescent bombs by night to facilitate the militia’s mission. The Zionist soldiers also provided other logistical services to the Maronite militiamen during the massacre.

Information about the massacre began to leak out after a number of children and women fled to the Gaza hospital in the Shatila camp, where they informed doctors of what was happening. News of the massacre likewise reached some foreign journalists on Friday morning, September 17, 1982. The bloodletting went on until noon on Saturday, September 18.

Three thousand two hundred ninety-seven (3,297) men, women and children were killed within forty hours, between September 16-18, 1982. Among the dead bodies, 136 Lebanese were found; 1,800 victims were killed in the streets and alleys of the camp, while 1,097 were killed in the Gaza Hospital and 400 others in the Akka Hospital.

Commenting on the massacre, Menachem Begin described the Palestinian resistance fighters to the Israeli Knesset as "animals that walk on two legs".

Massacre at the Ibrahimi Mosque (25 February 1994): Before worshippers had completed the dawn prayer in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, the blast of hand grenades exploding and the sound of bullet spray filled the mosque. Bullets and splinters from the grenades pierced the heads, necks and backs of the worshippers, wounding more than 350.

The crime began when terrorist Baroukh Goldstein and a group of Jewish settlers from the Kiryat Arba settlement entered the mosque. Goldstein was carrying his military machine gun and hand grenades along with large amounts of ammunition. He stood behind one of the pillars in the mosque and waited until the worshippers had prostrated, then opened machine gun fire on them. Meanwhile, others helped him load the ammunition, which included the internationally banned explosive dumdum lead.

Goldstein carried out the massacre at a time when Zionist soldiers had closed the mosque doors to prevent worshippers from fleeing. They also prevented those coming from outside the mosque precincts from coming in to rescue the wounded. Later, others were shot to death by occupation soldiers outside the mosque and at the cemetery during the funeral processions of those who had been martyred in the mosque. The massacre led to fifty deaths, twenty-nine of which occurred inside the mosque.

The Massacre at Qana (18 April 1996): The Israeli artillery and helicopters shelled a shelter inside the Fijian battalion working within the UN forces in south Lebanon, using bombs which explode in the air in order to increase casualties among the ranks of civilians who might try to seek refuge in shelters. The operation led to the deaths of 160 civilians, most of them women, children and the elderly who were unable to flee toward Beirut and were thus obliged to seek refuge in the shelter at the Fijian Battalion headquarters in the Lebanese village of Qana.

Another Massacre at Qana (2006): During Israel’s 'open war’ against Lebanon using Hezbollah’s kidnapping of 2 Israeli soldiers as a pretext, another massacre was committed by Israel in Qana. About 54 innocent Lebanese civilians, including about 37 children, were killed through an air raid.

Bethlehem – Ma’an/Agencies – A Palestinian armed group fired two Katyusha rockets toward the northern Negev city of Ashdod in Israel on Sunday, the furthest distance reached yet for a projectile launched from Gaza.

The two rockets exploded near Ashdod, which is more than 30 kilometers from Gaza, without causing injuries or damage, according to Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz.

Fighters stepped up rhetoric and retaliatory operations Saturday and Sunday, launching at least 14 projectiles at Israeli targets following a day of airstrikes that killed more than 200 Gazans.

Israeli media reported that eight were injured when a projectile landed near the city of Ashkelon.

Fatah’s military wing announced that it will resume bombing operations inside Israeli cities and has threatened to hit and destroy the Israeli military and security entities. They also called a state of alert in order to retaliate for Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have been ongoing through the night, with civilian houses and medical centres being targeted by Israeli air-strikes.

International Human Rights Workers are continuing to witness and document the escalating devastation. Two houses that internationals were staying in last night (night of 27th December), suffered almost direct hits from Israeli missiles, one in Rafah and one in Jabaliya.

"I was woken by an incredibly loud explosion that felt like it was on top of us. We ran for the door, but the blast had welded it shut. The windows had been blown in so we crawled out through them. As we came on to the street, everyone was out. The medical centre next-door had been hit. Medical equipment was strewn over the road. Equipment here is so low anyway due to the Israeli siege, to see it wasted on the street was heartbreaking" Jenny Linnel (Britain) International Solidarity Movement speaking from Rafah.

Last night thousands of Palestinian residents of Gaza were subjected to calls from the Israeli Ministry of Defence saying that "any house that has guns or weapons will be targeted next without further warning or any announcement"

Two international Human Rights Workers stayed with the family of Sara Aid Hawajereh, the 55 year old mother killed yesterday by an Israeli missile in Jabaliya.

"We were in the basement with the rest of the family. We heard an extremely loud explosion and the house began to shake. Each mother grabbed their children to them. Several medical and pharmaceutical centres treating civilians were hit by Israeli missiles throughout the night, including Al-Shifa hospital and the pharmacy in Hi Alijnina, Rafah.

A mosque was also hit last night, killing four civilians. The total amount of people now killed by Israel over the last 24 hours now stands at at least 282.

Palestinian residents in different West Bank areas held massive protests against the ongoing Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip and calling for unity among all Palestinian factions.

In Ramallah, the protesters demanded both Hamas in Gaza and Fateh in the West Bank to release all political prisoners.

The protesters, including members of the rival Hamas and Fateh, called for unity and called for retaliating to the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza.

The Israeli army attacked the peaceful protestors in several villages near Ramallah and fired rounds of live ammunition, rubber-coated bullets and gas bombs at them.

Mourning was declared in Ramallah and its surrounding villages in protest to the Israeli assaults.

The Palestinian residents of Jerusalem held protests against the Israeli offensive and announced a general strike.

Thousands of Palestinians also held massive protests in Nablus, in the northern part of the West Bank, and called for unity.

The protesters also called for resisting the Israeli occupation by supporting the resistance factions to counter the Israeli violations.

In the southern West Bank city of Hebron, hundreds of residents took off to the street and the Fateh movement said that it is organizing a mass blood drive in an attempt to save lives in Gaza.

Fateh spokesperson in the city, Jihad Al Qawasmi, said that Israel is violating the international law and is protected by the international community.

Furthermore, the Higher Follow-up Committee declared a general strike in all Arab villages and town inside the Green Line.

The committee called for massive protests in different Arab cities and towns.

In the Galilee, hundreds of Arab residents took off to the streets slamming the Israeli offensive and the idleness of the Arab countries while Israeli is ongoing with its offensive.

GAZA, (PIC)-- Israeli warplanes blasted the premises of the Aqsa TV station in the Gaza Strip at dawn Sunday in line with a series of devastating air raids on the Strip that started at noon Saturday.

The Aqsa TV, which did not go off the air, said that the warplanes fired a number of rockets at its headquarters west of Gaza city inflicting big damage but no casualties.

A station announcer said that the TV would continue to broadcast regardless of the destruction in a bid to unveil the "savagery of the Zionist occupation".

A spokesman for the Israeli occupation forces has said that the air force had launched 170 air raids since the devastating aerial bombardment started until Saturday night.

The intensified air raids claimed the lives of 270 Palestinians and wounded more than 750 others tens of whom are in very critical conditions.

The spokesman said that the IOF warplanes also targeted tunnels used for smuggling from Egypt into the Strip.

5 am: "They have resumed again. The sounds of F16 is everywhere now. I don’t know where are they striking. I asked my wife to wake up. We are all sleeping in one bed. Death is everywhere in gaza strip. Many horror stories and rumors are all around. [My two young children] cried a lot when i left the home to go to the funeral of my friend and classmate. He didn’t belong to any faction. He studied in Germany as he was the best student in my school. His leg and hand [were] what remained."

11 am: "The F16 is still roaming from time to time. They targeted medicine store in Al Jonena neighbourhood, near the store was there was a fuel store. You know all the people are storing huge quantities especially the drivers. We run everything on kerosene because there is no gas, yesterday i bought two big gallons about 40 ltrs. Four buildings were badly damaged and a stream of fire was flowing in the area. My friend in that area told me about injuries [not deaths] till now but the number is high. We have no electricity since then and they destroyed Al Aqsa satellite channel COMPLETELY."

"It was huge fuel store plus two tanks of fuel in the street. Lots of the buildings were burnt completely. Also a huge medicine store for traders from tunnels."

At least five Israeli warplanes on Sunday flew low over south Lebanon, already the target of an overnight reconnaissance flight, a Lebanese security official said.

"At least five aircraft over flew the Bint Jbeil region (south of Beirut) and headed for the port town of Tyre" farther north, the official told AFP.

The security official said an Israeli MK-type reconnaissance aircraft flew over the south all night until dawn broke.

Tension remains high in the region two years after the 34-day summer war in 2006 between Israel and Lebanon's Shiite Hizbullah movement which devastated the south of the country.

Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah, who is expected to speak later on Sunday about the deadly Israeli air attacks on Gaza, has threatened to "destroy" Israel if a new conflict erupts.

Israel says Hizbullah has "tripled its firepower" since the 2006 conflict and has pledged to attack Lebanese civilian locations in the event of renewed hostilities.

Israeli flights over Lebanon are in breach of U.N. Security Council resolution 1710, which in August 2006 ended the Israel-Hizbullah war.(AFP)

Gaza – Ma’an – Israeli airstrikes continued on Gaza throughout Saturday night and into Sunday afternoon. The death toll of the attacks rose to 279, with 900 injured 180 seriously so.

Israel began attacks on Gaza at 11:30 Saturday, ostensibly to root out Palestinian military groups launching rockets at Israeli targets. Two massive waves of strikes kicked off the operation, known as Operation Cast Lead, and strikes have continued throughout the night and early morning.

The death toll rises with each strike, and as more bodies are pulled out of Saturday’s rubble. A timeline of the latest is:

12:00 Israeli air forces launched a fresh raid against the governmental compound known as "As-Saraya" killing one child and injuring several others.

11:45 Israeli bombs targeted the government municipal council offices in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip; several injured Gazans were taken to hospital.

11:00 Israel bombs the temporary headquarters of the Rafah governorate injuring several people; the original building was destroyed in Saturday’s attacks.


10:30 Israeli jets targeted a jeep in the Zaitoun neighborhood of Gaza City killing one child. A second strike took place on the Jabalia area, no casualties were reported.

10:00 Three were killed after Israeli forces bombarded a police station in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City, and three homes were destroyed in the Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood west of the city.

8:00 The last Israeli raid targeted two de facto government police headquarters in the evacuated Israeli settlement Kfar Darum and Al-Matahin (the mills).

7:30 Al-Qarara greenhouses were obliterated in a strike on the southern Strip, killing a civilian, identified as Nabil Abu Tu'eima.


7:15 Bombs hit the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City and another on a military base called "Sa'd Sayil" in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Dozens were injured.

6:45 Israeli bombs landed on Gaza City’s Shuja’iyya neighborhood where a police center was destroyed and several injured.

6:30 The attack was preceded by a strike on a medical storehouse in the Al-Junayna neighborhood and a fuel storehouse with diesel and benzene in the Tal As-Sultan area, both in Rafah in the southern Strip. The strikes destroyed the buildings and much needed civilian supplies, and killed three who have not yet been identified.

1:01 am After midnight on Saturday Israeli fighter jets bombarded the security room in front of the Ash-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City as well as a mosque in the compound killing two and injuring seven. The blast shattered most of the windows of the emergency ward. The hospital’s morgues were declared full on Saturday and bodies line the hallways waiting to be claimed by family.

12:01am Three Palestinian activists with Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades were killed when an Israeli strike hit the Al-Mansura area east of Gaza City around midnight.

11:50 Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and several targets in the north.

11:30 Three from Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades were killed when Israeli airstrikes hit the Al-Mansura neighborhood east of Gaza City.

10:15 Two airstrikes killed three and injured four when they hit the Zaitoun neighborhood of Gaza City and on Jabalia in the north.

Director of Ambulance and Emergency Services in the de facto Palestinian Ministry of Health Muawiya Hassanein explained that despite media reports to the contrary, a large number of the casualties are civilians including women and children.

Gaza – Ma’an – Israeli forces called to Gazan families through loudspeakers demanding that they evacuate their homes before intense Israeli selling began in the northern Gaza Strip.

As the Abu Sultan family in the Jabalia refugee camp prepared their belongings Israeli fire rained down on their home killing several family members and injuring others.

Witnesses of the massacres on Saturday decided to challenge the Israeli order to evacuate and gathered in areas under attack to sit on roofs with families whose homes face imminent destruction.

Despite cold weather and Israeli warplanes flying overhead small crowds could be seen on rooftops across the northern Gaza Strip area. One home with large numbers of Gazans on its concrete roof was that of the de facto government Minister of Communication Yousif Al-Mansi. Citizens stayed on the roof until early morning.

Israeli forces gave no warning to the injured and homeless who sought refuge in the Al-Burno Mosque in the Ash-Shifa medical compound, which was bombed without notification overnight.

On Sunday the streets and squares of the Gaza Strip are empty as a state of fear and sadness overwhelms people who now preferr to stay at home.

Despite cold weather and Israeli warplanes flying overhead small crowds could be seen on rooftops across the northern Gaza Strip area. One home with large numbers of Gazans on its concrete roof was that of the de facto government Minister of Communication Yousif Al-Mansi. Citizens stayed on the roof until early morning.

Israel has launched air strikes on Gaza for a second successive day, piling pressure on Hamas after at least 228 people were killed in one of the bloodiest 24 hours for Palestinians in 60 years of conflict with the Jewish state.

Thick plumes of smoke have been sighted billowing over the Palestinian territory.

Yesterday, Israel hammered Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 228 people in retaliation for rocket fire.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said 'Operation Cast Lead' against the Islamist movement, which has also left some 700 wounded, will continue as long as necessary.

'The battle will be long and difficult, but the time has come to act and to fight,' he said.

Exile Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal called in Damascus for a new Palestinian intifada, or uprising, against Israel and promised suicide attacks after a four-year hiatus.

The United Nations has called informal talks to discuss the Gaza airstrikes, a spokesperson has said.

Following the mid-morning bombings, in which some 60 warplanes struck more than 50 targets over the span of just a few minutes, Hamas fired several dozen rockets, killing one Israeli.

Israeli air strikes continued sporadically throughout the day and into the evening.

'We will not stand down and we will not cave in even if (the Israelis) should eradicate the Gaza Strip or kill thousands of us,' Ismail Haniya, who heads the Hamas government, said in a defiant radio address.

Meshaal called for a 'military intifada against the enemy' and said 'resistance will continue through suicide missions'.

Hamas has not carried out a suicide attack in Israel since January 2005.

The White House said only Hamas could end the cycle of violence by putting a stop to the rocket fire on Israel.

'These people are nothing but thugs, and so Israel is going to defend its people against terrorists like Hamas,' spokesman Gordon Johndroe said at George W Bush's Texas ranch, where the president is preparing to spend the new year.

'If Hamas stops firing rockets into Israel, then Israel would not have a need for strikes in Gaza,' Johndroe said.

'What we've got to see is Hamas stop firing rockets into Israel.

'The United States hold Hamas responsible for breaking the ceasefire; we want the ceasefire restored. We're concerned about the humanitarian situation and want all parties concerned to work to make sure the people of Gaza get the humanitarian assistance they need.'

He was referring to a six-month truce mediated by Egypt, which ended on December 19, with Hamas refusing to renew it.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged Israel will do its utmost to avert a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which is under a crippling Israeli blockade.

'The people in Gaza do not deserve to suffer because of the killers and murderers of the terrorist organisation,' he said, referring to Hamas.

He insisted that Israel had only hit Hamas targets, including command structures and rocket-manufacturing installations.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate halt to the violence, as did the European Union, Russia, Britain and France, while several Middle Eastern states and the Arab League slammed Israel.

In Gaza, thick clouds of smoke billowed into the sky. Mangled, bloodied and often charred corpses littered the pavement around Hamas security compounds, and frantic relatives flooded hospitals.

Medics said civilians had been hit, but the majority of the victims appeared to be members of Hamas, branded a terror group by Israel and the West.

Hamas said the strikes destroyed its security structures across Gaza and killed three senior officials - the Gaza police chief, the police commander for central Gaza and the head of the group's bodyguard unit.

The bombing came after days of spiralling violence, with militants firing rockets and Israel vowing a fiery response.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who brokered the six-month truce, slammed the 'Israeli military aggression on the Gaza Strip' and blamed 'Israel, as an occupying force, for the victims and the wounded'.

The bombardment set off angry demonstrations in Israel's Arab towns and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as well as protests in countries around the region.

It came less than two months ahead of Israeli elections on February 10.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the head of the governing Kadima party and one of the front-runners for the premier's chair, said that 'today there is no other option than a military operation'.

Violence in and around Gaza has flared since the truce ended, and it escalated dramatically on Wednesday.

Israel has generally responded to attacks by tightening the blockade it imposed after Hamas seized Gaza from forces loyal to secular Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in June 2007. But on Friday it allowed the delivery of dozens of truckloads of humanitarian aid.

Ever since its inception in 1948, the Israeli government has actively encouraged Israeli 'settlers' to build their homes on occupied land, directly in the line of fire. There has been no reason at all for the Israeli government not to pull out the civilians beyond the range of any mortar shell or rocket, there is plenty enough occupied land elsewhere for those people to settle. But there is of course a reason why the Israeli government is even paying their civilians to live in those dangerous areas, guaranteed escalation (either real or false flag).

Israel calls up 6,500 troops amid signs of ground assault

Israel has called up more than 6,500 reservists amid signs of an imminent ground assault on Gaza.

Senior government officials warned there could be an operation to accompany the second day of bombardment of Hamas targets.

At least five more people died today bringing the death toll to more than 280, the bloodiest single attacks in Gaza's modern history.

Israeli aircraft have hit 230 targets inside the crowded territory since Saturday

An Israeli official said: "The cabinet has approved the drafting of thousands of reserve soldiers. These include combat units and home front units."

It came as warplanes bombed a series of contraband tunnels on the border with Egypt, killing two Palestinians and scattering Egyptians waiting at the border to help the wounded.

The tunnels that criss-cross the border are a lifeline to the Hamas movement and are used to smuggle goods and weapons into the territory that has been virtually cut off from the outside world since the Islamists violently seized power in June 2007.

"The air force attacked over 40 tunnels on the Gaza side of the border," said an Israeli army spokeswoman. "Those tunnels were believed to be used for smuggling weapons, explosives and sometimes people."

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire as there was growing evidence of Israeli plans to increase its military operations.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband also called for an "urgent ceasefire and immediate halt to all violence".

"The UK supports an urgent ceasefire and immediate halt to all violence," he said in a statement.

"The unanimous UN Security Council press statement overnight, and the EU's statement yesterday, rightly argue for this position."

Miliband described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "deeply disturbing" and said that the "rise in rocket attacks on Israel since 19 December, and yesterday's massive loss of life, make this a dangerous moment which should be of concern to the whole of the international community."

A mosque and a television station were hit as part of Operation Cast Lead and Ehud Barak, Israel's defence minister, said that the operation "won't be short''.

Israeli tank corps reservists were ordered to report to barracks as the Israeli army built up ground forces along the Gaza Strip's perimeter.

"The IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) will expand and deepen its operations in Gaza as much as necessary,'' he said.

"We need to know that it won't be short and it won't be easy, and we must stand with determination.''

Several targets were attacked overnight by Israeli warplanes including a mosque near Shifa Hospital in Gaza City which Israel claimed was being used for "terrorist activities''.

Palestinian sources later reported the Israeli air force had bombed the main studio building of Al Aqsa TV, a station that is used by Hamas.

The studio building was destroyed, but the station remained on the air from a mobile unit, the sources said.

The U.N. security council met for four hours in emergency session before issuing a statement calling for a ceasefire to be restored between Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist movement that governs the Gaza Strip.

A statement issued on behalf of the Security Council called for "an immediate halt to all violence".

Diplomats said a compromise statement initially put forward by Russia was watered down at the urging of the United States. The final text approved by consensus mentioned neither Israel nor the Islamist movement Hamas by name.

The council also called for the opening of border crossings into Gaza "to address the serious humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza" and ensure a continuous supply of food and fuel as well as medical treatment.

Israel regularly blocks the delivery of supplies to Gaza as part of its strategy of trying to put pressure on the Hamas authorities although today, as the air assault continued, Israel allowed through deliveries.

But Israel's stated aim of using force to stop the firing of rockets by Palestinian militants inside Gaza did not succeed as various rockets landed in Israel.

One missile with a much greater range than is normal hit the centre of the port city of Ashdod. This meant the number of Israelis living in range of rocket strike had suddenly increased by tens of thousands.

Sarit Philipson, regional police spokeswoman, said she was driving home when she saw the missile hit the ground near Ashdod, about 23 miles north of Gaza.

She told Israel Army Radio she saw a large explosion and a plume of smoke.

Gaza's Hamas rulers have been stockpiling weapons in recent months, including medium-range missiles. Until the Ashdod incident, the deepest targets inside Israel had been the city of Ashqelon and the town of Netivot, which are closer to Gaza.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli army said on Sunday it bombed more than 40 tunnels linking the blockaded Gaza Strip with Egypt's Sinai desert.

"The air force just attacked over 40 tunnels found on the Gaza side of the border. Those tunnels, we believe, were used for smuggling weapons, explosives and sometimes people to train for terror missions in other countries in the region," army spokeswoman Avital Leibovitch told reporters.

"The pilots notified direct hits on these targets," she said.

I want to see peace and I want all of this to stop. There is too much blame going around and not enough compassion. Many of us have done our homework and there are so many conflicting views...who has the market on ALL THE FACTS?

If you're a grandmother, you'd think you'd have learned better than to throw crap like that around. Not a very good role model.

You do apparently love propaganda, because you are listening to people who have been taught what to believe, people whose government has a vested interest in lying to, because it suits your religious beliefs to do so. You love that propaganda because it doesn't upset your little apple cart of the Jews being the poor attacked people of God, the Chosen Ones who must have land stolen for them by your God before you can be wisked away and escape all the bad things in the world.

Funny how this comes from someone who is blaming the women and children as they lay dying in the streets of THEIR OWN LAND, while she protects the actions of a horrible government who stole land from others... yes, too much blame, not enough compassion sums up your behaivor quite well.

Compassion? 1 Israeli has died, an adult man. 217 Gazans have died- women and children among them. And that's ONLY from this single bombing, this doesn't include the death toll from the starvation and privation the Isreali government has forced on them for months now. Where's your vaunted compassion now?

Isreal stole a land, and we are supposed to sit here and say that they're the poor innocent victims, while they bomb and slaughter and torture and starve those whose LANDS THEY STOLE.

And because someone actually dares to speak this truth, you stamp your little granny foot and declare them to be a "jew hater know-it-all." You don't even know the most BASIC history about this, you don't even know that the land was given to them by a government who didn't own it to begin with... and yet you sit there and denigrate someone who has actually done his homework and knows what's really going on.

You DO love propaganda, because you've fallen for not only your own country's propaganda, but for the Zionists' propaganda, too. It has taken me a long time to learn what the truth really is about the situation, and because I finally got to the bottom of it and learned about the realities of the situation, doesn't make me, or Biggs, a "jew hater."

If anything, we are FAR more compassionate than you are, because we both have compassion not only for the poor Gazans, but for the common person of Isreal, as well. The common person of Isreal has been lied to, and all of the deaths of the common Jew/Israeli is thanks to their own despotic, evil, violent, aggressive government.
