Mangled bodies, wailing relatives at Gaza hospital

A Palestinian is rushed to hospital after he was wounded in an Israeli air strike on Gaza City
Relatives wail as the mangled bodies of loved ones are brought into Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital on Saturday following Israeli air strikes that killed nearly 200 people in the Palestinian enclave.
Ambulances and private cars rush those wounded or killed in the punishing raids to the hospital, where staff use sheets as makeshift stretchers.
In some cases, a single stretcher is used to carry several bodies. Torn limbs fall to the blood-soiled floor.
There is no space left in the morgue and bodies are piled up in the emergency room and in the corridors, while many of the severely wounded scream in pain.
Overworked doctors and nurses can only deal with the most pressing cases.
Most of the victims wear the uniforms of the security services of Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs Gaza and whose installations were targeted in the attacks Israel says were in response to rocket attacks by Gaza militants.
Morgue employees use megaphones to ask parents who throng the entrance to identify their loved ones and take the bodies for burial.
"My brother was still alive when he arrived here, and was talking to me but no one could help him. He died," said Ahmed al-Gharabli, his voice shaking and tears streaming down his cheeks. His brother Baha was a Hamas policeman.
The bloodied body of another policeman, Mohammed Abu Shaaban, is carried on the same stretcher as that of a girl aged about 10 who was hit in the stomach.
Abu Obeida al-Jarah, a police commander who was inside one of the buildings targeted by the Israeli bombs, escaped unharmed.
"We managed to get out and immediately came here to identify the bodies," he said.
"It is truly a massacre and it will not go unpunished. The blood of policemen cannot be unavenged."
The health minister in the Hamas government, Bassem Naim, worried about the dire lack of resources to deal with the large number of victims.
"Our means are too modest to respond to this terrible massacre," he told AFP.
At the best of times the health sector is stretched to the limit in this impoverished and overcrowded enclave that has been the subject of crippling sanctions since Hamas seized power in June 2007
Barefoot, her headscarf dropped on her shoulders, Asmaa Abdo rushed to the hospital immediately after the raids to inquire about the fate of her two sons, who are training to become policemen.
"I was told my sons are both dead but nobody at the hospital can tell me whether that is true," she cries, shouting insults at moderate Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and Arab states she feels failed to do anything to protect Gaza.
Abbas' forces were ousted from Gaza in the Hamas takeover.
Near the hospital, a mountain of rubble marks the spot where a 10-storey building that housed a Hamas prisoner support association once stood. Bulldozers clear the ruins as rescuers continue a grim search that has already turned up five bodies, all torn to pieces.
Verses from the Koran, the Muslim holy book, echo across the streets, broadcast from the minarets of the city's mosques. Women in tears head to the hospital.
Al-Aqsa, the Hamas television station, broadcasts images of mangled, bloodied bodies lying on the ground. A message on the screen proclaims: "The Holocaust continues" and the anchorman denounces what he calls the silence and the complicity of some Arab countries.

What is amazing is that if you use a search engine to find the latest headlines about Iraq, the Israel/Gaza conflict comes up half the time.
How is this not a planned diversion?
Rothschild owns the AP and Reutrers.
The CFR controls all of the US media.
Bilderberg and its tentacles control the rest of the western media.
There have been over 5,000 news articles in the last 24 hours concerning the illegal actions (few of them mention the starvation, most mention a Hamas conflict).
There are less than 500 news articles about daily Iraq/Afghan bloodshed.
We are being screwed with, using the palestinian people as human shields against the true carnage in US continued occupations in the Middle East.
Also, who gave Israel the weapons...here is a hint...
The same military industrial complex that gives Hamas their weapons...duh!

Seing as Zionism is just another anti-religion national socialism paradigm (made famous by the Nazi's), their is little argument about their threat to the general public. But, Zionism is controlled by Rockefeller/Rothschild/Beatrix (as were the Nazi's...ever wonder why House of Windsor and Parliament were never bombed?) So to just point at zionism and say... "There is your enemy...kill,kill,kill" Is basically the same thing the zionists were told after WWII concerning the Palestinians. Wake up and smell the New World Order. They change their uniforms like we change underwear (I am hoping the analogy fits guys). Doctor's secret: A Nazi father, now a Jew by choice
BY JOHN DORSCHNER Bernd Wollschlaeger has two stories to tell. First, he's a former officer in the Israel Defense Forces, a physician who developed expertise in biological warfare. He lives in Miramar, runs a family practice in North Miami Beach, has become a legislative leader of the American Medical Association and is active in local Jewish causes. Now, at 49, he has decided to tell ``my coming-out story.'' It is this: He was born the Christian son of a World War II German tank commander -- a third-generation warrior who received Deutschland's highest military honor, the Iron Cross, which was pinned on his uniform by Adolf Hitler himself. As a teenager, Bernd studied the Nazis and the Holocaust and was repelled by what he learned. Ultimately, he converted to Judaism and moved to Israel. ''This was, and is, very difficult to deal with,'' he said. ``I never saw my father again.'' But recently, after telling his children about his father, he started talking -- first at Hillel Community Day School, where his two eldest children attend. Now, he has created a website -- AGer manLife.com -- and plans to publish a book under that name. ''He is an amazing individual,'' said Brian Siegal, executive director of the American Jewish Committee's local chapter, where Wollschlaeger was elected to the regional board. ``He's gone through an amazing self-reflection and contributes greatly to the work we are doing.'' For years, he kept his past secret, not even telling his first wife, a Jew he met in Israel -- an omission that, when revealed, seriously damaged the marriage.''I lied, plain and simple,'' he said. 'I was ashamed of my past, and it wasn't something that you could work easily into a conversation in Israel. `My father was a Wehrmacht officer.' That's definitely a party pooper.'' `A TRAGIC FIGURE'Here is Wollschlaeger's story, based on interviews, e-mails and a manuscript of his book: Growing up in Bamberg, a small town in Bavaria, Bernd came to view his father, Arthur, as a brooding drunk whose life had been shattered by the Nazis' defeat. ''I think he was a tragic figure. He got caught up in a system. Then his whole notion of the world collapsed,'' Wollschlaeger said. Arthur had been educated at NAPOLA, the elite Nazi training academy. He never joined the Nazi Party, but he embraced Hitler's vision of making Germany great again. Arthur won the Iron Cross for a tank charge in Poland. He was wounded five times during the war -- the last an open head wound from a grenade. After the defeat, he spent a year in a U.S. prison camp. Eventually, he became a government bureaucrat, but his life was never the same. At home, he drank a lot and talked proudly about his Iron Cross, while brushing off other aspects of the Hitler era. ''Son, I have told you everything you need to know.'' Sometimes old army buddies dropped by for long bouts of booze during which they sang Deutschland üeber alles and Die Fahne hoch, the Nazi Party anthem. From an early age, Bernd didn't like his father's authoritarian bearing and his parents' insistence on obedience. After Palestinian terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, a teacher told Wollschlaeger's class that the Israelis ``brought it upon themselves. . . . Some people believe that they are special and too powerful and, in my opinion, they are.'' Wollschlaeger, then 14, thought that was an odd response to a slaughter, and he didn't understand when some people said, ``Not again.'' THE HOLOCAUSTHe knew the Nazis had put Jews in concentration camps and that some had been murdered. ``But had no idea about the industrialized and sophisticated killing machine designed to systematically exterminate an entire ethnic group.'' He began reading everything he could find on Jews and Israel. His parents noticed. ''Why are you so preoccupied about their suffering?'' his mother, Elizabeth, asked him. ``Jews were not the only ones who died in the war. Have you forgotten what I told you about our suffering? We lost everything and had to start all over.'' In 1979, as Wollschlaeger was starting college, the American TV series Holocaust was shown in Germany. 'My father's reaction was predictable. `Nobody in this house will watch this program,' he yelled. 'This is just another smear campaign by those Jews in Hollywood, and we don't have to listen to their lies.' '' But another time, Arthur admitted that on the Eastern front he had seen ``cattle cars filled with civilians, mostly women and children.'' Still, he insisted to his son that he learned the extent of the killing only after the war. Writes Wollschlaeger: ``This was hard to believe, and I recognized that even in retrospect, my father was camouflaging what he knew.'' At a peace conference in Germany organized by Israeli and Palestinian young people, Wollschlaeger heard their stories and decided he had to make a trip to Israel to see for himself. His father thought that was a ``ridiculous idea.'' But his mother gave him the money for the trip and asked him to deliver a prayer for her in Israel. Wollschlaeger later wondered whether his maternal ancestors had been Jewish. But his mother, now dead, never said. On the morning of the trip in 1978, Wollschlaeger's father drove him to the railroad station. When he arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Western Wall, sometimes called the Wailing Wall. He slipped the prayer his mother had requested between stones. ``After doing so, I closed my eyes to pray for her soul. I forgot the world around me and imagined the thousands of people who had prayed at this very spot over the centuries. ``I lost sense of time and place and prayed with a fervor I had never felt before. I was weeping and I felt the divine presence in me.'' He continued his quest for understanding Judaism and Israel. He had been baptized a Catholic, but religion had not been practiced in his household. He viewed Christianity as cold and abstract. The more he read about Judaism, the more he was impressed with its depths. In medical school, he sought to talk to a rabbi about converting. The small Jewish community remaining was suspicious of his motives. ''Please understand that I cannot encourage you to convert,'' the rabbi told him. ''Actually, I should discourage you, because Judaism does not proselytize.'' Still, the rabbi offered to help him learn. He studied for 10 years. Finally, as he was finishing med school, Wollschlaeger convinced Jewish teachers of his sincerity. He was ready for conversion. Because so few religious leaders were left in Germany, he had to travel to Switzerland for a mohel to perform his circumcision and to France for the immersion in the ritual bath or Mikveh. After passing his medical exams, he celebrated with his classmates. Then, while somewhat inebriated, he went to find his parents, who were having dinner at a restaurant. He told them about his conversion and his conclusion that to lead a full Jewish life he needed to move to Israel, because there were so few Jews left in Germany. ''I am losing my only son,'' his father said bitterly. LIFE IN ISRAELIn Israel, he started taking classes in Hebrew while working in a kibbutz that raised bananas. His father regularly sent letters. Wollschlaeger refused to open them. Six months after he arrived, his sister told him that his father was dead. He had been diagnosed with cancer and ``chose not to receive treatment.'' Only then did Wollschlaeger open the letters. In the last, his father wrote that he had removed Bernd from his will and asked that he not attend his funeral. Eventually, Wollschlaeger married a New York woman who also had emigrated to Israel, and they had a son. After Iraq's Scud missile attacks on Tel Aviv and Haifa during the first Gulf War, she had had enough of the danger, and in 1991, they moved to South Florida, where she had relatives. They had a second child, a daughter, but the pressure of the move and other factors ended the marriage. In 1999, he married a Hispanic Catholic. They have a daughter, who has been baptized. ''She's being raised in a Jewish-Catholic environment. When she's old enough, she will make her own decision,'' Wollschlaeger said. Over time, he told his children bits and pieces of his past, and it was son Tal who started telling others. ''One day, we were learning about the Holocaust at school,'' Tal said, 'and the teacher asked, `Was anyone's family in the Holocaust?' And I raised my hand and said, 'My grandfather was a Nazi.' I was the class clown and everybody thought I was kidding.'' Wollschlaeger spoke to the class and has kept speaking about his past to selected groups, even appearing on a WLRN show, but he rarely discusses it in the healthcare field, where he is a maverick. While many doctors are political conservatives, Wollschlaeger drives a Honda Accord with a Barack Obama bumper sticker. For his practice, he rented an office in a blue-collar area of North Miami Beach. ``I did not choose medicine to get rich.'' In Jewish causes, he has gone on solidarity missions to Israel with American Jewish Committee leaders and was elected to the regional board of the Anti-Defamation League, dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism. ''He wants justice to be served in the world,'' said Andrew Rosenkranz, the league's regional director. ``He's an extraordinarily kind-hearted man.'' Seeking closure on his past, Wollschlaeger recently traveled to Germany and met his sister for the first time in 18 years. She remains ''incredulous'' at his decision. ``In her perception, I destroyed the family.'' He submitted a manuscript of A German Life to several publishers and was rejected. He is now planning to self-publish a limited edition and hopes to connect with a major publisher. He acknowledges that all children are shaped by their parents in some way. From his dad, he says, he learned ``to be disciplined in everything I do and stubbornness.'' He also inherited his father's weakness for alcohol. ''I was a happy drunk. I stopped because I wanted to be a good father.'' He has been in recovery for 12 years and is trained to be a specialist in treating addicts. Earlier this year, he was elected president of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine. ``I learned what my father didn't learn.'' Zionists are experts at propaganda, disinformation, denying facts and outright lying. Any criticism of Zionism or of Israel is labelled as "anti-semitism", where this is interpreted to mean "anti-Jewish". This is a slanderous falsehood. Criticism of Zionism is criticism of a particularly ugly political movement, not criticism of a religion or of the adherents of a religion. One may be critical of Zionism and of Zionists while at the same time being quite tolerant of, or well-disposed toward, or even an adherent of, the Jewish religion (as we see from the websites cited above).
Whether one approves of or dislikes the beliefs and practices of Judaism it remains that Jews have a right to hold those beliefs and maintain those practices. No-one, however, Jewish or non-Jewish, has a right to drive out people from their homes on land where they and their forebears have been living for centuries, to deprive people of their human rights, to cripple their society and to damage the welfare of others by a parasitic subversion of the government of another country for base political purposes, which is what Zionists have done and continue to do.

Here's a clear case of criticism of the state of Israel being classified as "anti-Semitism". It's a cheap trick and should never be allowed to pass without refutation. Israel has as much right to exist as you have to give your neighbor's house to your relatives and force your neighbour to live in the street, but to assert this is not to cast aspersion upon Jews. Israel is an apartheid state because of the way the Israeli government (with the support of most Israelis) treats Arabs within its borders as second-class citizens and because of its attempts to destroy Palestinian society in the occupied territories so as to rid the land of Arabs and make it suitable for Israeli annexation, but to suggest this is not to make any criticism of Jews, but rather, of Israelis — and they richly deserve it.

In Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, Jimmy Carter takes the risk of speaking truth to propaganda. Predictably, the Israel Lobby and its shills ranging from the "conservative" National Review to "liberal" media and commentators have attempted to banish Carter by labeling him an "anti-semite."
We must not let the Israel Lobby get away with demonizing an American president who dares to stand up to their lies.
Zionism as Racism
A principal component of Zionism is racism, in the form of the belief held by Zionists that Jews constitute a race (or ethnic group or however they see themselves) superior to all others, and in particular to those, the Palestinians, who lived on the land that the Zionists stole from them in 1948 (under the pretext of the land having been given to them by the United Nations) and subsequently.

Thus, according to Israeli law, a person born in London, who has never visited Israel, does not speak Hebrew and professes atheism, is granted automatic Israeli citizenship, if he can produce proof from a rabbi that his mother was considered a Jew, while indigenous Palestinian inhabitants who were born to Christian or Muslim parents are at best tolerated but never considered as full fledged partners in Israeli society. When you are on the ground in Palestine, you can see Zionism physically imprinted on the landscape. But, if this is not enough to demonstrate the inherent racism of Israel's occupation, you can also drive through Palestinian towns and Palestinian neighborhoods in and near Jerusalem and see what is perhaps the most cruelly racist policy in Zionism's arsenal: house demolitions, the preeminent symbol of Zionism's drive to maintain Jewish predominance. Virtually every street has a house or houses reduced to rubble, one floor pancaked onto another or simply a pile of broken concrete bulldozed into an incoherent heap. Jeff Halper, founder and head of the non-governmental Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), an anthropologist and scholar of the occupation, has observed that Zionist and Israeli leaders going back 80 years have all conveyed what he calls "The Message" to Palestinians. The Message, Halper says, is "Submit. Only when you abandon your dreams for an independent state of your own, and accept that Palestine has become the Land of Israel, will we relent [i.e., stop attacking Palestinians]." The deeper meaning of The Message, as carried by the bulldozers so ubiquitous in targeted Palestinian neighborhoods today, is that "You [Palestinians] do not belong here. We uprooted you from your homes in 1948 and now we will uproot you from all of the Land of Israel."

Zionists are experts at propaganda, disinformation, denying facts and outright lying. Any criticism of Zionism or of Israel is labelled as "anti-semitism", where this is interpreted to mean "anti-Jewish". This is a slanderous falsehood. Criticism of Zionism is criticism of a particularly ugly political movement, not criticism of a religion or of the adherents of a religion. One may be critical of Zionism and of Zionists while at the same time being quite tolerant of, or well-disposed toward, or even an adherent of, the Jewish religion (as we see from the websites cited above).
Whether one approves of or dislikes the beliefs and practices of Judaism it remains that Jews have a right to hold those beliefs and maintain those practices. No-one, however, Jewish or non-Jewish, has a right to drive out people from their homes on land where they and their forebears have been living for centuries, to deprive people of their human rights, to cripple their society and to damage the welfare of others by a parasitic subversion of the government of another country for base political purposes, which is what Zionists have done and continue to do.

Rothschild dynasty relies on Zionism to further their agenda of domination. Zionism relies on Rothschild/banking/military-industrial complex to further its agenda. Where does one stop and the other begin? They both seem to be welded into one force with identical goals. Does one ever make a move that isn't designed to help the other? To me, the progress of international zionism confirms the power of international finance, because only international finance is capable of funding a program that only benefits a tiny minority of the population, like zionism. Zionism could have never accomplished so much without complete support by the richest of the rich. If it had to rely on grassroots support, it would perish. No such grassroots support exists. Likewise, the power of international finance is confirmed by the success of zionism. There can be no debate that central bankers run the world. The progress of zionism is a tribute to the strength of the Rothschild empire. The power of zionism and the power of finance move in tandem. Perhaps at a very early point in its history, zionism had some admirable goals, but it was quickly hijacked by ultra-wealthy lunatics hellbent on creating an ethnic-supremacist kingdom for their cult that is impervious to any resistance by outsiders. So what can I do about the horrors taking place right now in Gaza? I can write about it, talk about it, read about it, then go see that old lady up the street who lives alone with her cat who nobody likes because her house stinks and she's a million years old. She spent christmas alone, and I feel almost as badly about that as I do what's happening in Gaza, but the difference is I can do something about it. "No country would allow continuous rocketing of its civilian population without taking the necessary actions to stop it," she said in a statement. Most of those killed were policemen in the Hamas militant movement, which controls Gaza, but women and children also died, Gaza officials said. About 700 others were wounded, as missiles struck security compounds and militant bases, the officials added. Israel said it was responding to an escalation in rocket attacks from Gaza and would bomb "as long as necessary". The air raids continued into Sunday morning, while Israeli tanks were deployed just outside Gaza. One of the rockets caused damage to the windows of a house in a moshav near Ashdod. Explosions were also heard in the Ashkelon area. There were no reports of injuries. This was the most northern point hit by rockets fired from Gaza so far - more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) away from the Strip.

An air raid siren was sounded in the Ashkelon and Ashdod area at around 9:30 am, followed explosions heard in the area. A siren also sounded in the Yavne area in central Israel.
Two Qassam rockets landed in open areas in the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel. Sixty-four rockets were fired at Israel on Saturday, a Netivot resident was killed and several people were injured.
"We were not surprised by the rockets fired at Ashdod," said a military source. "We estimated this would happen and prepared the area's residents for such a scenario."
He added that Hamas was in shock and under pressure and would try and carry out different types of terror attacks.
A resident of the moshav hit by a rocket said, "We heard the siren, and several moments later there was a very loud explosion. I could imagine that a Qassam landed in our moshav. The entire house trembled. We have nowhere to go to because we have no fortified rooms. There's a shelter located several houses away from here, but we couldn't reach it.
"Only after we came out we discovered that the rocket landed right next to my house. It was a miracle that nothing happened. A few houses sustained damage and people here are extremely terrified. We didn't imagine it would be so close."
Under fire
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni held an evaluation of the situation with senior security officials. The three instructed the IDF to prepare for an escalation in the Gaza Strip, as Hamas and the terror organizations are expected to increase their efforts to launch rockets and bombs at Israel, as well as carry out terror attacks with the help of terrorists from the West Bank.
The Home Front Command released instructions stating that mass events would be canceled this week in communities relatively far from the Gaza Strip, shopping centers will open only in buildings made of concrete and public transportation would operate in a limited manner.

The IAF struck a total of 100 Hamas targets in Gaza on Saturday. Palestinian medical officials reported at least 230 people killed in the Israeli strikes.
Meanwhile, the rocket fire towards Israel continued throughout the day, and by 9 pm 64 rockets had been fired, of them 44 were fired towards Eshkol and Sdot Negev Regional Council and the rest towards Sderot and Ashkelon.

Israeli leaders said the campaign was a response to almost daily cross-border rocket and mortar fire that intensified after Hamas, an Islamist group in charge of the coastal enclave Israel quit in 2005, ended a six-month cease-fire a week ago. Despite the air attacks, militants fired some 80 rockets into Israel, emergency services said. In one of the deepest attacks, two rockets struck near Ashdod, a main port 30 km (18 miles) from Gaza, causing no casualties, police said. Israeli tanks deployed on the edge of the Gaza Strip, poised to enter the impoverished enclave where 1.5 million Palestinians live. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's cabinet approved a call-up of 6,500 reservists, a government official said. "Israel will continue (the campaign) until we have a new security environment in the south, when the population there will no longer live in terror and in fear of constant rocket barrages," said Mark Regev, a spokesman for Olmert. Israeli military affairs commentators said the Israeli offensive did not appear to be aimed at retaking the Gaza Strip or destroying the territory's Hamas government -- ambitious goals that could prove difficult and politically risky to achieve ahead of Israel's February 10 parliamentary election. Instead, they said, Israel -- after an air bombardment on Saturday -- wanted to strengthen its deterrence power and force Hamas into a new truce that would lead to a long-term halt to cross-border rocket salvoes. DANGER In the Gaza Strip, where normally bustling streets were largely traffic-free, Palestinians stood outside their homes to chat with neighbours about the dangers ahead as the roar of Israeli aircraft and explosions echoed in the distance. "I kept my children at home. No need to study today," one Palestinian parent said. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak ordered schools, due to reopen on Tuesday after the Jewish holiday of Hannukah, to remain shut in southern Israeli communities. Along the Gaza border, a Reuters photographer saw Israeli soldiers cleaning the barrels of their tanks taking cover under the armoured vehicles as Palestinian rockets flew overhead. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas blamed Hamas, which seized the Gaza Strip from his Fatah group in 2007, for triggering Israel's raids by not extending the cease-fire that Egypt brokered in June. "We talked to them (Hamas) and we told them 'please, we ask you, do not end the truce. Let the truce continue and not stop' so that we could have avoided what happened," he said in Cairo. In a show of national unity, Israel's leading political parties suspended electioneering for the February 10 ballot, which opinion polls forecast the right-wing Likud of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will win. U.S. President George W. Bush's administration, in its final weeks in office, put the onus on Hamas to prevent more violence. Aid groups said they feared the Israeli operation could lead to a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The United Nations Works and Relief Agency said its food and cash distribution to 750,000 Gazans had been suspended but it hoped to bring in 10 truck-loads of medical supplies on Sunday. Gaza hospitals said they were running out of medical supplies because of a long-standing Israeli-led blockade. Hamas, which won a parliamentary election in 2006 but was shunned by Western powers over its refusal to renounce violence and recognise Israel, estimated at least 180 members of its security forces had been killed with at least 15 women and some children. Among the civilian dead were seven teenagers, students at an UNRWA school, who were killed in an Israeli air strike while waiting for a bus to take them home, said Christopher Gunness, an UNRWA spokesman. "Death is everywhere this morning," he said.

BAGHDAD, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Protestors burned Israeli flags and fired AK-47s into the air in protests across Iraq on Sunday, demanding a stronger response from Arab nations to the Israeli attack on Gaza.
A teenage boy was killed in one protest in the volatile northern city of Mosul when a suicide bomber on a bicycle detonated explosives in a crowd of around 300 protestors.

Police said 17 people were wounded in the attack in Mosul, a last stronghold for Sunni Islamist al Qaeda and other militants as violence subsides across Iraq. In Baladiyat, a Baghdad district that is home to many Palestinians given refuge in Iraq under Saddam Hussein, men waved banners and condemned Arab nations for not doing enough to support Palestinians. "We have been waiting for an action from Arab leaders for almost 60 years," Jaleel al-Qasus, the Palestinian envoy to Iraq, said during the protest of several hundred people. "Our efforts have been in vain." Several thousand people protested in the city of Samarra, a Sunni Arab city north of Baghdad and a few hundred took to the streets in Falluja in the mainly Sunni province of Anbar. "Arab silence is behind the bombings," one banner read. The protests took place as Israel launched more air strikes on Gaza on Sunday following attacks on Saturday initiated in response to rocket and mortar fire from Gaza militants. The attacks, some of the worst in 60 years of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, incensed many in Iraq. Iraq hosted some 30,000 Palestinian refugees before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Many of them found themselves victim of attacks or threats once the war began, partly because they were seen as clients of the deposed leader Saddam. Many have fled, and several thousand Palestinian refugees have been stranded at camps near the Iraq-Syria border waiting to find a new home abroad for more than two years. The demonstrations in support of Palestinians, many of whom are Sunni Muslims, in Mosul and Falluja were organized by the Iraq's Sunni Arab Islamic Party. The office of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the reclusive cleric who has peerless influence among Shi'ites in Iraq, issued a statement condemning what he called a 'savage' operation. "The Arab and Muslim world demand, more than ever, a practical stance to stop this never-ending offensive," it said. Moqtada al-Sadr, the Shi'ite cleric who is a chief foe of the U.S. presence in Iraq, criticised close U.S. ties to Israel. He accused Israel of having little regard for civilians' lives. "The massacre of innocents in Gaza is proof of what we are saying. All this is happening with backing of the American government and colonial states," he said in a statment. Sorry but I am an American and I do not like this violence on any innocent people, especially children. Your phrase should have been American government, not American people. Most American people don't want this (unless they watch Faux News). It is obvious to me that the GOVERNMENT of Israel is trying to incite neighbors (Lebanon, Iran, Hezbollah, etc.) to react to this carnage.
