GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli warplanes and helicopters pounded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 205 people in the bloodiest one-day death toll in 60 years of conflict with the Palestinians.

Militants in the Gaza Strip, who have launched dozens of rocket attacks against Israel since a truce expired just over a week ago, fired more salvoes that killed one Israeli man and wounded several others.

Both sides said they were ready to stage wider assaults, threatening to plunge the region into a crisis that could leave stalled talks over Palestinian statehood in tatters.

Black smoke billowed over Gaza City, where the dead and wounded lay scattered on the ground after Israel bombed more than 40 security compounds, including two where Hamas was hosting graduation ceremonies for new recruits.

At the main Gaza City graduation ceremony, uniformed bodies lay in a pile and the wounded writhed in pain. Some rescue workers beat their heads and shouted "God is greatest." One badly wounded man quietly recited verses from the Koran.

More than 700 Palestinians were wounded in all, medics said.

Israel said the operation, dubbed "Solid Lead," targeted "terrorist infrastructure" following days of rocket attacks on southern Israel that caused damage but few injuries. An army spokeswoman said Hamas leaders could be targeted.

"There is a time for calm and a time for fighting, and now the time has come to fight," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.

The rocket attacks increased pressure on Israeli political leaders to act as a February 10 election approaches.

The army did not set a timeframe but the mayor of Ashkelon, an Israeli city in range of Hamas's rockets, said military planners saw the operation lasting "more than a week."

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, a leading candidate to become Israel's next prime minister, called for international support against "an extremist Islamist organization ... that is being supported by Iran," Israel's arch-foe.

In line with the Jewish state, the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush, in its final weeks in office, appeared to put the onus on Hamas to prevent a further escalation.

REACTION

"Hamas' continued rocket attacks into Israel must cease if the violence is to stop," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a statement that urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties but stopped short of calling for an end to the Israeli air strikes.

The United Nations and the European Union, in contrast, called for an immediate halt to all violence.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Israeli air campaign was "criminal" and urged world powers to intervene.

Egypt said it would keep trying to restore the truce between Israel and Gaza.

Hamas threatened to unleash "hell" to avenge the dead, including possible suicide bombings inside Israel.

Hamas estimated that at least 100 members of its security forces had been killed, including police chief Tawfiq Jabber and the head of Hamas's security and protection unit, along with at least 15 women and some children.

Morgues across the Gaza Strip ran out of space for bodies.

The Islamist group, which won a 2006 parliamentary election but was shunned by Western powers over its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel, said all of its security compounds in the Gaza Strip were destroyed or seriously damaged.

Aid groups said they feared the Israeli operation could fuel a humanitarian crisis in the impoverished coastal enclave, home to 1.5 million Palestinians, half of them dependent on food aid.

Gaza hospitals said they were running out of medical supplies because of the Israeli-led blockade, increasing the chances that the death toll will rise.

Palestinians staged protest rallies in Arab East Jerusalem, and in the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Hebron, leading to scuffles with Israeli forces.

Israeli analyst Ron Ben-Yishai said the strike was "shock treatment ... aimed at securing a long-term ceasefire between Hamas and Israel on terms that are favorable to Israel."

Among the buildings destroyed in the Israeli bombardment was Gaza's presidential compound, which Hamas seized in June 2007 from Abbas's secular Fatah forces after a brief civil war.

Witnesses also reported heavy Israeli bombing along Gaza's border with Egypt. Palestinians use hundreds of tunnels under the border to bring in everything from goods to weapons.

The campaign followed a decision by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's security cabinet to widen reprisals for cross-border Palestinian rocket attacks following the collapse of a six-month-old, Egyptian-brokered ceasefire a week ago.

A five-day Israeli offensive in March killed more than 120 people, but Saturday's death toll was the highest for a single day since 1948, when the Jewish state was established.

Olmert, who will leave office after the February election, has repeatedly said Israel does not want to retake control of the Gaza Strip. Israel pulled its ground forces and settlers out of the coastal territory in 2005.

After a 2006 war in Lebanon that many Israelis viewed as a failure, military action in Gaza has become a political hot potato that could affect the outcome of the election.

Eyewitness: Chaos in Gaza

The BBC's Rushdi Abou Alouf in the Gaza Strip described the chaos as Israeli warplanes fired missiles at Hamas targets, killing at least 155 Palestinians.



Israeli planes are still flying over Gaza and they have just targeted another Hamas [security] compound in the middle of the Gaza Strip, in a place called Khan Younis.

We can see from our office here in Gaza, in the middle of Gaza City, ambulances are still evacuating the injured from buildings and school kids are trying to find secure places.

People who were going to their work were turned back and went home, and most of the residents in Gaza have been ordered by the ministry of health to stay indoors.

The mosques in Gaza are calling the people here to go to the hospitals and to donate blood.

Doctors say the operating rooms are full and the morgues are full and they have no place to put the dead bodies.

They are asking for every doctor who is not working today to come and help.

We have seen in the streets of Gaza today and this evening many funerals.

Gaza has no shelters, it has no safe places. The Hamas security compounds are in the middle of the city - it's not the kind of place where you see compounds outside the cities.

I have witnessed one of the compounds - which is 20m [yds] away from my house - I was standing on the balcony and I have seen the Israeli airplanes hitting the place.

Some of my balcony was damaged and my kid was injured.

Many people were injured inside their houses today.

I saw an Israeli fighter drop a bomb on a building, flattening it. Smoke was coming from it. Kids were panicking and screaming.

It took rescue teams six hours to evacuate injured from the place and they are still searching under the rubble, trying to find any survivors.

How then can the Jews whose father is the devil, and they being murderers like the devil by crucifying the Lord of Glory, be the “Chosen People?”

DID NOT JESUS CHRIST say, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees! For you compass sea and land to make one proselyte. And when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves?” (St Matthew 23). Even secular Jews defer to the rabbis as their leaders when it comes to interpreting Jewish dogma. How then can the Jews who are children of hell be the “Chosen People?”

How could the Jews to whom Jesus Christ said, Because you do not believe, you are not of my sheep be the “Chosen People?” (St John 10). For to this day the majority of the Jews do not believe in Jesus Christ. What then is their “chosen-ness” if they are not of the Messiah’s sheep?

St John the apostle said, “Many deceivers are gone out into the world who deny that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and anti christ.” (II John 1).

How then can the Jews who to this day deny that Jesus Christ the eternal Son of God became man for our salvation be the “Chosen People?” Will we be “deceived” by the Jews that they are the Chosen People? What then is the Jews’ “chosen-ness?”

In the book of Revelations it is written: But the fearful and the unbelieving and the liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire. This is the second death.

1. The Jews are fearful of death.

2. The Jews are unbelieving. They do not believe in the God of the Bible but in the god of the Talmud.

3. The Jews are liars. For they say that they are God’s chosen people when God says that they are an “accursed people” because of their sins. (Isaiah 66:20).

MOSES WHOM THE JEWS boast as being their hero pronounced a blessing and a curse on the Jews. God, said Moses, would bless the Jews if they showed their love for Him by accepting the “Prophet” Whose teachings would be required of the Jews. (Deuteronomy 13).

But the Jews crucified the “Prophet” rather than receiving His teachings on repentance and confession of his Divine right to demand obedience. Thus the curses that Moses pronounced upon the Jews have been the Jews’ experience over the last 2000 years. (Deuteronomy 28).

Hated, persecuted, censured, (rightly so), wandering from nation to nation when expelled from their host nations, and wreaking havoc wherever they go in their hatred of Christianity, the Jews have indeed experienced the curses predicted of them by Moses and the desolation that Jesus Christ predicted of the Jews for rejecting Him.

JEWS ARE NOT THE “Chosen People.” Christians are the “Chosen People.” God said to Abraham, “I will bless them that bless thee and curse them that curse thee. And in thy seed all of the nations shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12,26).

What “blessings” have the Jews brought to the world since 33 A.D.? Just read today’s headlines and one can clearly see that “curses” have been brought upon society by the Jews.

The War in Iraq serves only the interests of the Jews and their promotion of the Christ-hating State of Israel. The tragedy of the World Trade Center was a result of the Jewish Zionist agenda.

The secularization of Western society is caused by the Jews, which has debased the morals of once Christian nations, now rife with the abominations of anal sex of homosexuals and the perverse sexual conduct of lesbians. Jews are on the forefront of promoting these perverse “alternate life-styles.” Are all of these things “blessings” from the so-called, “seed of Abraham,” the Jews? No. These are all “curses” brought upon us by the “seed of the devil,” the Jews.

Christians Are God’s “Chosen People” Not Jews. Christians are the “seed of Abraham.” This is what St Paul the Hebrew of Hebrews said over and over again. Here is one instance of St Paul’s many assertions regarding Christians being the seed of Abraham: “If ye be Christ’s then are ye Abraham’s seed.” (Galatians 3:29).

WHEN JESUS CHRIST said to his disciples, “I have chosen you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should remain,” Christians were sealed as God’s Chosen People for all time.

Jews can share in the Christians’ “chosen-ness.” Jews do not have to continue in a state of “accursedness” and “desolation.” Jesus Christ offers the Jews the chance to embrace Him and have His blessed name called upon them. Yes Jews if they will repent can be called Christians too!

Yes Jews, like myself, a former-Jew, and thousand of others like me, can say, “Blessed is He Who Comes in the name of the Lord! Then the Jews can look forward to heaven and not the lake of fire.

US blames Hamas for provoking Israel 

The US says the Hamas movement and its artillery attacks are responsible for provoking Israel to launch an onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

"Hamas' continued rocket attacks into Israel must cease if the violence is to stop," said US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe in a statement on Saturday.

The remarks came shortly after Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip claimed the lives of at least 210 Palestinians and wounded 800 others, most of whom are civilians.

The attack was launched two days after Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni visited Egypt and held talks with high-ranking Egyptian officials on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Air Force says the attacks were aimed at Hamas targets in the strip, hitting mostly security headquarters and weapons storage facilities.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned in a televised news conference that the operation "will go on and be intensified as long as necessary."

Washington, meanwhile, called on Israel to "avoid civilian casualties" as much as possible, while urging Hamas to "end its terrorist activities if it wishes to play a role in the future of the Palestinian people."

In retaliation to the Saturday offensive, Hamas launched rockets into Israel, killing 1 Israeli man and wounding four others, a local Israeli news service reported.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Press TV that Israel carried out the strikes after 'receiving green light from its allies and certain regional countries'.

The international community has condemned the Israeli attacks, urging an immediate stop to violence in the region. Britain said Saturday that it was deeply concerned and called for "maximum restraint" from Israel.

"We are deeply concerned by the reports of deaths and injuries of innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip following the recent Israeli air strikes," a foreign office spokesman said.

Israel says Gaza incursion to go on 

Israel's defense minister says the Gaza operation will go on for "as long as necessary", snubbing international calls for an end to the onslaught.

"The operation will go on and be intensified as long as necessary," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said at a televised news conference on Saturday.

He made the remarks after waves of Israeli aircraft swooped over the Gaza Strip, killing more than 210 Palestinians. The center of Gaza City became a scene of chaotic horror, where dozens of mutilated bodies were laid out on the pavement, the New York Times reported.

The death toll is expected to rise because of the ongoing Israeli raids.

"There is a time for cease-fires and a time to fight, and now is the time to fight," Barak said. "For months the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and security forces have been preparing for the operation that began today."

Gaza residents told Press TV that the Israeli gunboats have approached the coastal strip and the helicopters are still seen flying over the coastal region.

Tel Aviv had long threatened the Hamas movement with a military offensive, warning that the punitive measures against the populated area would be aimed at halting Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.

The Saturday onslaught came after a six-month truce between Israel and the Hamas movement expired on December 19.

"Hamas was warned a few times in a variety of ways, but I can't elaborate on the warnings," said Maj. Avital Leibovich, a spokeswoman for the Israeli military.

"Anything associated with Hamas is for us a legitimate target, including an apartment in which the basement is a weapons storehouse. This operation is not finished yet, but for now it involves only aircraft," she added.

Israel placed the Gaza Strip under a blockade after the democratically-elected Palestinian government of Hamas took control of the coastal area in mid-June 2007.

Palestinian groups say they would consider a longer ceasefire if Israel met Hamas demands, cease all military attacks on Gaza, and lifts the embargo on the strip.
