This is Merlin.  He's a bit bigger now weighing about 20 lbs.  He's definitely a family member to us.

That is a amazing story.I have to ask though, has there ever been any behavior problems with the coyote in anway? Does he follow commands well?

Like any puppy, he has his moments... He is very headstrong about certain things, and we've had to reach compromises... the bottom line is when dominant tone number two comes out of my mouth whatever it is he's doing he stops... to get him to respond to the word NO favorably, it took a combination of saying "NO"... if no response then a more inflected "NO" with a blast of water from the squirt bottle... he now understands the meaning of the word, and responds, and has since he was about four months old. Lila our orange tabby trained him to the cat box when he was a toddler so when he is in the house rather than sitting at the door to go out like Katie, he will just go in the cat box.

He can tell when I am pleased or when I am miffed... He will not allow me to be angry with him or anyone... he will lower his head and walk over with his tail slowly wagging low, roll over on his back and talk to me and combination's of whimpers, squeaks, and whines, wanting a tummy rub... He tends to be headstrong when he wants to do something... but he has learned that he can do just about anything... if he asks... He's a lot smarter than most domestic dogs which means he must be watched at times much closer...

Suffice it to say he does not have a vicious bone in his body... but he is the consummate opportunist and can snake a morsel of food from a plate on the kitchen counter in the blink of an eye without you noticing, or the whole plate if you're not careful... (chuckle)...

He tests everything with his mouth open and then touches it with his tongue... he is not what you would call a "licker" at all... his mouth is his interactive connection to the world, and he uses it with great finesse... if you touch his nose with your nose however he will lick your face.

The bottom line is, he has been no more problematic, and he responds to training just like any other puppy...

After a hard play session the pups settle down for a nap... Our Persian mix, Gracie baby-sits the pair.

Thanks for the story JT.

Glad you asked him. I found it interesting also, I was wondering how domesticated a wild animal can/could be, now we know if it's from birth quite alot.

Neat pictures and stories, all of you.  JT keep us updated on Duke.  What a blessing for you and your family he must be.

Doggy Dictionary

BATH:

This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

BICYCLES:

Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards; the person then swerves and falls into the bushes, and you prance away.

BUMP:

The best way to get your human's attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea.

DEAFNESS:

This is a malady which affects dogs when their person wants them in and they want to stay out. Symptoms include staring blankly at the person, then running in the opposite direction, or lying down.

DOG BED:

Any soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room.

DROOL:

Is what you do when your persons have food and you don't. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad and let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps.

GARBAGE CAN:

A container which your neighbors put out once a week to test your ingenuity. You must stand on your hind legs and try to push the lid off with your nose. If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and moldy crusts of bread.

GOOSE BUMP:

A maneuver to use as a last resort when the Regular Bump doesn't get the attention you require.....especially effective when combined with The Sniff.

LEAN:

Every good dog's response to the command "sit !", especially if your person is dressed for an evening out. Incredibly effective before black-tie events.

LEASH:

A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your person where you want him/her to go.

LOVE:

Is a feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return.

SNIFF:

A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dogs rear end and inhale deeply, repeat several times, or until your person makes you stop.

SOFAS:

Are to dogs like napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean.

THUNDER:

This is a signal that the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling uncontrollably, panting, rolling your eyes wildly, and following at their heels.

WASTEBASKET:

This is a dog toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrappers. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person comes home.

Things Dogs Must Try To Remember

I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear  when he's on the toilet.

The garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff.

I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table.

I will not roll my toys behind the fridge.

I must shake the rainwater out of my fur BEFORE entering the house.

I will not eat the cats' food, before or after they eat it.

I will stop trying to find the few remaining pieces of clean carpet in the house when I am about to throw up.

I will not throw up in the car.

I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs,  etc.

I will not lick my human's face after eating animal poop.

"Kitty box crunchies" are not food.

I will not eat any more socks and then redeposit them in the backyard after processing.

The diaper pail is not a cookie jar.

I will not wake Mommy up by sticking my cold, wet nose up her bottom end.

I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them.

I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not the red ones, or my people will think I am hemorrhaging.

When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled down when it's raining outside.

We do not have a doorbell.  I will not bark each time I hear one on TV.

I will not steal my Mom's underwear and dance all over the back yard with it.

The sofa is not a face towel. Neither are Mom and  Dad's laps.

My head does not belong in the refrigerator.

I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's driver's license and car registration.

Strangest thing just happened... the bumper music going out of the break into the long segment 33 minutes after the top of the second hour, was the theme for Doctor Who... Duke perked his ears then let out couple of yips and then a howl and a couple more yips...

Katie cocked her head and looked at him... then he looked puzzled. It is the first time he has howled... He then got up and sniffed around the room like he was looking for where it came from... he surprised himself...  Cheesy

The pet bubble is just another example of people living beyond their means.  I have two dogs.  I make enough and budget every month so that they are fed and well taken care of.  I mean are people that strapped that they can't afford a 20lb bag of 20.00 dog food a month?  Doesn't make any sense to me.  Vet bills aside dogs are not that expensive.

There might be other reasons than food bills. Like when people get foreclosed on and have to move into an apartment or something. Marriages breaking up under financial stress. Moving town to get a new job. That kind of stuff.

LOL, JT.  His 'first howl.'  I wonder what it was about that song.

Here's a YouTube video I just found of 2 coyotes howling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUzXSKJzl0Q

I couldn't find a better one.  I wonder if Duke heard it, if it would make him howl - maybe Katie, too.  I'm not sure whether or not you want to really get them started though. Cheesy

JT, your story, or should I say Duke's sounds like something out of Jack London and I believe, along with at least one other poster that there's a book in it.

I always had dogs at home but now that I live in a small urban apartment in a concrete jungle I'm only have cold-blooded 'pets' and they are not loving and cuddly. If I put my hand in the terrarium it's likely to get bit by a bright yellow amazonian toad. So I don't know if my animal belongs to be in this category but I want to show off my weird pet.

This video is not for the squeamish: the toad eats a live mouse almost as big as himself.

There is no law against it, if that is what you mean, and if there was I would see it repealed for dogs... He is just a dog and only as dangerous as he is trained to be... given his start, he's a pussy cat...

You can own almost any animal, and the exotic ones just require a state license usually. You can even own an elephant, you just need a license from the state which proves you can care for it. And as for the "pet bubble" it's sad but people are going to die too. If they succeed in breaking down the Family System, or although i am not Christian, American's Christian based values, i think more people will own pets. These people see us as re-producing cattle, they would prefer we be single and have a pet as our best friend instead of being married with children.

In spring I found 3 little baby squirrels in my garage that had fallen from their nest.  I brought them in, and didn't know nothing about squirrels.  So I looked on the internet.  I raised them and found that squirrels are very loving and playful.  I did intend to release them into the wild.  It was a great experience for me and my kids we will never forget them.  Now we look at wildlife in a very different way!! A long time ago, I walked into work one day and found a hummingbird all tangled up in cobwebs that were all over the rafters. I could tell it was near death and exhausted from struggling. I cleaned it off and started nursing it back to health with sugar water and an eye dropper, when my manager saw it he told me to 'throw that damn thing in the garbage, we got work to do'.
I offered my resignation if that is how he felt about life and his inability to love anything but money. I informed him that if he insists on being an asshole about it, he could dock me 3 hours pay. Long story short, a few hours later I was able to release him back into the wild. I'll never forget it, and neither will my old manager Grin

JT: That is so neat that you have a coyote! A friend of ours had a wolf and he was one of the neatest animals I've ever met.

I have 2 dogs and 3 cats and I couldn't imagine having to find homes for them, I always always budget for their food and care, no matter how poor we are.

Now I gotta post pictures of my babies Grin

Hi JT, beautfull pups, the big one must have malamute bood mixed, looks just like the dog I had for many a year. I was with the wife back then and we noticed a sign malamutes for sale. Stopped and saw the owners, real pizzheads, one pups leg was broken. I got the feeling the owners abuse them. Anyhow I bought the one with the broken leg, got him to a vet and fixed up and raised him along with my kids.
Only problem I had is he loved running down deer, I doubt he ever caught one, but he loved the chase. He'd take off a day at a time when he caught the scent.
Well anyhow the picture brought back some nice memories. NICE.

Chris,

His mother was a full blown, 4 Corners, high desert, Coyote, and way far away from any humans and their animals...

He is in full winter coat in these pictures which gives him that "Huskie" look... He will shed starting in April leaving only his reddish to sandy colored under hairs and darker, coarser, guard hairs for summer... I will save his "wool" and have it spun... It is as thick as 2" everywhere, even his tail, all except his lower legs and feet, and it is ultra soft.

A deer would probably scare Duke no end! Now a rabbit or a ground hog... different story... Grin

Here is a shot taken on Christmas of Duke with our newest cat, Peek-a-boo. We got her back in June when she was 2 1/2 months old. She and Duke are the same age, and now with the younger Katie, they are all growing up together... "Peeker", as I call her, and the Pups, are the best of "buds"!

Dont forget to stock up on PET FOOD

Humans can eat almost anything organic and get nutrition, were as our pets have a restricted diet.
I've been buying up the cheap Cat Biscuits, same would work for a Doggie.

Here are the latest pics of Duke and Katie... these were taken the last week of March. Duke turned one year old on April 7th and Katie turned 8 months on March 25th... they are totally inseparable... Duke will not eat until Katie has had her fill. He is a perfect Coyote man-dog... Coyotes mate for life unlike wolves and dogs, and they are monogamous to a fault... she is "spoiled rotten" by him, and he loves it... so does she...

I didn't see these when you first posted them, JT but wanted to comment on how adorable those 2 are!  And they've both grown a lot since the pictures you posted before.  They're so sweet, it's just so neat.

And Tsul777, I would like to have one of those.  Please let me know if he sires a litter of puppies. Wink Cheesy
