Massacre in Mumbai: Up to SEVEN gunmen were British and 'came from same area as 7/7 bombers'

British-born Pakistanis were among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources claimed today, as the death toll rose to at least 155.

As many as seven of the terrorists may have British connections and some could be from Leeds and Bradford where London's July 7 bombers lived, one source said.

Two Britons were among eight gunmen being held, according to Mumbai's chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. At least nine others are reportedly dead.

The eight arrested were captured by commandos after they stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages today. Despite the Indian authorities' assurances that the situation was under control, the siege continued at the Taj Mahal hotel and explosions could still be heard in central Mumbai.

One security official said: 'There is growing concern about British involvement in the attacks.'

But Gordon Brown has urged caution. He emerged from a conversation with India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to say there was no suggestion of a British link.

'At no point has the prime minister of India suggested to me that there is evidence at this stage of any terrorist of British origins, but obviously these are huge investigations that are being done and I think it will be premature to draw any conclusions at all,' Mr Brown said.

FBI agents ordered to India to investigate attacks

WASHINGTON – The government ordered FBI agents Friday to fly to India to investigate the bloody Mumbai attacks that killed two American travelers and a former New York couple. U.S. citizens still in the city were warned their lives remain at risk.

Intelligence officials looked urgently for clues about the identify of the attackers, a crucial unknown as Indian officials charged, without giving details, that "elements in Pakistan" were involved. A tentative rapprochement between the two nuclear-armed rivals could hang in the balance, and a U.S. counterintelligence official cautioned against rushing to judgment on the origins of the militants.

President George W. Bush pledged cooperation with Indian authorities and mourned the deaths of more than 150 people at the hands of gunmen who attacked targets across India's financial capital starting Wednesday night.

"My administration has been working with the Indian government and the international community as Indian authorities work to ensure the safety of those still under threat," he said. "We will continue to cooperate against these extremists who offer nothing but violence and hopelessness. "

A U.S. counterterrorism official said it was premature "to reach any hard-and-fast conclusions on who may be responsible for the attacks." The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation, said "some of the signatures of the attack" were consistent with the work of militants who have fought against India in the disputed Kashmir region.

U.S. officials were working out the final details with Indian diplomats Friday for the departure of an FBI team, U.S. authorities said. A second group of investigators was on alert to join the first team if necessary.

The investigators aim to learn more about the militants who carried out the lethal strikes on luxury hotels, a train station and an Orthodox Jewish center where a rabbi and his wife, who had moved to Mumbai from New York, were among five hostages slain. An American and his teenage daughter traveling with a Virginia-based spiritual group were also among those killed during the coordinated attacks.

"Americans are still at risk on the ground" in Mumbai on Friday, the State Department said Friday, warning citizens not to travel to the stricken city at least through the weekend.

U.S. officials were checking with Indian authorities and hospitals to learn more about the extent of casualties.

In New York, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement confirmed Friday that Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, were among those killed in the terrorist assault on the ultraconservative group's Mumbai headquarters.

A spokeswoman for a meditation group in Virginia said two Americans traveling with the organization in Mumbai also were killed. Bobbie Garvey, speaking for the Synchronicity Foundation, based in Faber, Va., identified the two slain members as Alan Scherr, 58, and his 13-year-old daughter, Naomi.

State Department spokesman Robert McInturff said U.S. officials have activated a phone tree to contact American citizens who registered with the U.S. consulate in Mumbai.

Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, said in a statement that his country is "confronting the menace of terrorism with great vigor." Haqqani insisted "it is unfair to blame Pakistan or Pakistanis for these acts of terrorism even before an investigation is undertaken."

President-elect Barack Obama has spoken by telephone with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about the attacks and received several intelligence briefings, State Department officials said.

Indian officials suspect the Islamic terrorists in Mumbai may have British links after examining BlackBerry phones they used to monitor news reports. Key figures in the terrorist gang were equipped with the devices that meant they were able to monitor British news, even when the authorities turned off power.

A senior officer in the country's elite Black Cat commando unit told the Telegraph, the gunmen were able to trawl the internet for information once they lost cable television feeds to the two luxury hotels and office block.

India's foreign minister hinted the terrorists use of Pakistani news organisations was also being compiled by intelligence officials. "According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," said Pranab Mukherjee. "Proof cannot be disclosed at this time."

A leading British expert on terrorism suggested last night the media coverage of attacks was triggering new cult of celebrity among Islamic extremists.

Hassan Ghaffoor, the Mumbai Police chief, has said "the operation is ongoing" but in its "final stage."

It is not known how many Israeli citizens were being held by militants in the Jewish centre, although unconfirmed reports put the number at nine. Eli Belotsercovsky, the deputy chief of mission at the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, confirmed the killings. "Five bodies of hostages have been found," he said. "They are Israeli nationals."

Commandos stormed the centre, a business and residential complex run by the orthodox Jewish group Chabad Lubavitch, in the early hours of Friday morning. They abseiled from helicopters on to the roof before entering the building.

It is still not known how many hostages, many of whom were believed to be Israeli, were held inside by an estimated three gunmen. The Israeli embassy has denied reports that Israeli forces were involved in the assault against the militants.

MI6 is using social networking site Facebook to recruit employees in its most recent attempt to diversify its base of applicants.

For some years the UK secret service has been attempting to recruit more women and people from ethnic backgrounds with a series of high-profile advertising campaigns which eschew its Oxbridge 'tap on the shoulder' image.

The latest pop-up ads on Facebook state: "A career in world events? Help influence world events [and] protect the UK. Operational officer roles collecting and analysing global intelligence."

Another reads: "Time for a career change? MI6 can use your skills. Join us as an operational officer collecting and analysing global intelligence to protect the UK."

In April this year the government announced that it planned to use social networking sites such as Facebook to interact with the public as part of a new communication plan.

MI6 has advertsied for ethnic minority spies, but warned it won't be like James Bond.

The Secret Intelligence Service's head of recruitment said that it needed more black and Asian [i.e. Pakistani heritage] agents to cope with changing threats to British security.

The man, identified only as John, said that the service needed to be "more flexible, more adaptable", after years of a "rather comfortable cold war existence".

MI6 has placed adverts in publications aimed at ethnic minorities for several years, but yesterday broke with tradition by inviting black and Asian people to meet with serving intelligence officers, The Guardian reported.

Ten per cent of the service's latest fast track intake were from ethnic minorities, but it wants to do more to improve the diversity of recruits.

Earlier this year it emerged that MI6 had hired gay rights charity Stonewall charity to help it attract more homosexual staff, and in 2005 it started advertising vacancies on its website as part of an effort to move away from its traditional Oxbridge recruitment networks.

But those impressed by the gun-toting antics of Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace are being advised to think twice before applying. MI6 is looking for people with discretion and the ability to sustain relationships, John said.

"We are not looking for a James Bond – people jumping out of windows, running around disobeying orders, drinking dry martinis, clutching women and firing guns," explained Catherine, one of the agents at yesterday's event.

Seven of the terrorists who brought carnage to Mumbai are British, Indian government sources claimed yesterday.

They said two British-born Pakistanis are under arrest. And another five suspects are said to have been born and raised here.

Two of the seven are from Leeds, one is from Bradford and one from Hartlepool, the sources claimed. All are aged between 20 and 26.

The claims were made as the death toll in Mumbai reached 155 – with predictions it could go as high as 200.

The Hartlepool suspect was allegedly found in the five-star Taj Mahal Palace hotel, scene of some of the most horrific killings. The man from Bradford and one from Leeds were allegedly discovered on the 17th floor of the Oberoi-Trident Hotel.

A second man from Leeds was allegedly captured near a jetty after a gang of around 25 terrorists landed in Mumbai by boat on Wednesday.

The suspects were allegedly found with documentation, possibly including passports, which revealed their origin.

This seems to be a mostly MI6 run operation with AP/Reuters running propaganda (both controlled by...ROTHSCHILD!).

A BRITISH tycoon was killed by crazed terrorists in Mumbai – moments after telling of the panic in the city on his mobile phone.  Mr Liveras, the founder of a luxury yacht business, was pronounced dead on arrival at St George’s Hospital in the city at 9.30pm local time last night.  Seven Brits have been injured as the death toll reached at least 119 while more than 300 are reported injured.  Before Mr Liveras' death, he had described the chaos in a telephone interview recorded as he and hundreds of others were still inside one of the buildings targeted by the terrorists.  After the call the 73-year-old died from several gunshot wounds.
