New 'Halo'-esque look for Korea's troops

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13639_3-10098953-42.html

Things may be getting a little more stylish up on the DMZ (the Korean Demilitarized Zone) when Republic of Korea troops don their new high-tech battle uniforms. Accessories could include bulletproof helmets and a new assault rifle.

The Agency for Defense Development will begin the two-phase development on a new combat uniform beginning next year, according to The Korea Times.

"The agency has completed studies on the concept of the future combatant uniform and equipment,'" an unnamed official told the newspaper. "From next year, we plan to begin developing related technology and equipment after getting approval from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration."

The new new battle uniforms would provide protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks, and would feature automatic temperature control. A new protective vest is also planned. In addition to keeping the lead out, the helmet will be prewired for minicam video transmission, GPS navigation, and assorted networking gear, the official said.

The rifle has already been tested and could come online sooner than the rest of the outfit. The double-barreled K-11 assault rifle lets the shooter fire either NATO 5.56- or 20-millimeter grenades, all off the same trigger. Day and night aiming is accomplished with a thermal target seeker and laser that calculates distance automatically--a true point-and-shoot.

uh, I spent some time in korea. Maybe some of their troops will have a suit like this, but I highly doubt very many will.

the only way to look badass with a segway.

anyways that new halo like body armor stuff america pioneered it if i remember corectly.we came up with the idea years ago and so far almost none of the weapons(aside from the scar machine gun) have made it past the testing stages.

i think the project was called future soldier or something like that.history channel had a thing on it

Ah i think i remember that. Did it have the "Cloaking" clothing using thousands of tiny cam's and screens or something that was in development? Claimed it would make the soldier near invisible.

I see I didn't read the whole thing and assumed it was N. Korea.

As for the segway pics... My brother is a quadriplegic and dearly wants the origional invention which led to the segway.

One nice thing about the US's troops helmets and lack of helmets is the ability to look to the left and right.

Not too far-fetched. This is the new XK-11 being fielded early '09 for the ROK

It looks a lot like the future soldier's rifle.

@sane

That is one of the things that scare me..... Letting a computer program make judgement of who is enemy and who is not.... I dont trust it. But on a happy note im sure they could be hacked to "flip" judgement...... Just like those lovely robots did in Iraq and turned on their masters........ link to follow!

They have no idea how goofy they look on those stupid trolley things. If a cop came at me on one of those I'd already be on the floor laughing my ass off.

I saw a cop on one of those in chicago a few years back, and felt compelled to ask what they do with it if they have to give chase to a guy who say, scales a wall, she said "i have to let him go and just radio in and hope another officer is nearby" and then laughed... weird.

They are good for law enforcement probably, but a guerilla attack would wipe them out.
