I'm tying to get away from toothpaste with fluoride in it and I'm just curious what everyone else is using. When I went shopping at Target the other day I couldn't find any that didn't have fluoride.

I've heard some people just using baking soda, but I'm not sure if I want to use that twice a day everyday.
Thanks,

I use this http://www.iherb.com/productdetails.aspx?c=1&pid=6347&utm_source=gb&utm_medium=f

You should try shopping at whole market stores, because target, walmart, all the other major corporate **** wont carry good toothpaste.  Wink

Tom's of Maine has a great line of products. Some items do have fluoride, so make sure you read the label.

I mix my own:
In a shot glass, I mix about 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/4 cap-full (just a drop) of peroxide and enough water to make a thick paste. I rinse with tap water (with silicofluoride) and spit it out.

I've been using this for several months and won't ever go back to buying toothpaste again. I'm still on the first bottle of peroxide and box of baking soda. Cost: about $1.50.
It has even made my teeth whiter.  Grin

Look up 'Dental Caries' on wikipedia.
The natural saliva in your mouth is what keeps the ph in balance. The natural bacteria in your mouth reacts with stuff like fermenting carbohydrates and sugars to form an acid. This acid is what softens the enamel of your teeth, thus creating an environment for cavities to form. Your spit restores the ph and actually rebuilds tooth enamel.
The frequency of consuming 'sugars' causes more harm than the quantity since your saliva doesn't have the time to restore the ph in your mouth. So, babies who suck on juice or soda-filled sippie cups all day long will have rotten teeth.
60% of the prescription medicine taken in this country cause: Dry Mouth!

The whole business of dental caries being a transmittable, infectious disease, as labeled by the CDC, is hogwash. They are caused by poor diet, poor dental hygiene...although, some people are more susceptible than others for cavities.

Hmmm, I just thought of something:
If dental caries is such an epidemic, transmittable, infectious disease then why hasn't the CDC, ADA, AMA and the OMB outlawed kissing on the mouth?  Grin

We don't have a Whole Foods Market but I was able to hunt down a nutritional store that had some options. I ended up purchasing Nature's Gate cool mint gel.
http://www.natures-gate.com/shop/showitem.asp?ProductId=46100155&menuId=170&withLinks=1

If this isn't very good then maybe I'll just order some of that Auromere toothpaste online.

I'm now using Hydrogen Peroxide as pre-brush mouth rinse. I can't believe how cheap that stuff is. Costco has 2 big bottles of it for $2.

I purchased some baking soda as well to try out but I didn't just want to jump right into it. I know a lot of people use it with no problems but I heard someone say it can be kinda harsh on their mouth. For some reason I feel like I need to take baby steps into all of this.

Other than price is there any benefit of baking soda over a fluoride-free toothpaste?

Good question. Grin I did a google search and came up with a few items:

http://hubpages.com/hub/Make_Your_Own_and_Save_-_Toothpaste_and_Mouthwash

and: http://www.bakingsodabook.co.uk/Baking_soda_with_hydrogen_peroxide_to_whiten_teeth.shtml ...everything you ever wanted to know about baking soda.  Grin

I read several other web pages and found that you absolutely want to avoid acids, like lemon juice, for whitining teeth and 2 minutes of brushing is more important than whether or not you have anything on the brush.

p.s. on the peroxide mouth rinse, I would dilute it half and half with water.

Personally, I like the fact that one cardboard box and one small plastic bottle will last at least three times longer than a tube of toothpaste - at, as you've seen, a fraction of the cost.

How many people here use Baking Soda for their toothpaste?

How often do you brush with it?

Any advice for those considering using it as their toothpaste?

I don't worry about it, because you don't ingest your toothpaste (unless you're doing it way different than I am)
Fluoride in the toothpaste shouldn't hurt you.

Funny...I thought I already replied to this -  Huh That's what fluoride will do to a brain! Roll Eyes

I use the paste mix in the morning and just a wet brush at night. I use a half and half mix of water & peroxide after I floss to swish with.

If the pH level in your mouth is right and you don't have a 'dry mouth', I don't believe, from what I've read (lots), that fluoride is necessary - in any form.
Proper diet, proper oral hygiene is the key, imo.

I just can't justify spending $5 on a tube of paste when I can get the same (or better) results for about .50 cents.
Call me a penny-pincher or, a tree-hugger but, that's what I am.  Grin

Compared to the water there is a lot of fluoride in the toothpaste though. It doesn't matter that you don't eat it, it goes in to your body through your tongue mostly but also through other areas in your mouth. There is no need for having fluoride in toothpaste unless maybe you eat HUGE amount of sugar and refusing to use dental floss. But if that's the case you're a sheep anyway so it doesn't really matter.

This is true.  Smiley

I figure with all the silicofluoride that is force-fed to me in packaged food and drink products and tap water, this is one area that I have complete control over: No fluoride for tooth-brushing...although, there is silicofluoride in the tap water I rinse with.   Undecided
- but, I hope to change that real soon. Cool I have big plans for the water department...I'll let you know if it works.   Wink

We go to the local health food store and buy a brand called Tom's. It's great! I believe there's even a brand for children.

As someone else mentioned, some of the different flavors do have fluoride, so just pay careful attention and get the one that doesn't.

Tom's of Maine, natural fluoride-free.
And it's not cheap at $5.99 a tube.

I used Baking soda for about a year but now I use Tom's with no fluoride.

Box of baking soda is a buck a box and it will last a long time. It is pretty abrasive though so don't go crazy with the pressure on your teeth. Hydrogen Peroxide rinse too for good measure on the cheap. 64 ounces is a 1.50$ here.

Ah lol I see you already mentioned H2O2. =P

I just started using the ecodent tooth powder after years of fluoride. The first 3 days without fluoride I had  headaches constantly. I'm thrilled now to be fluoride free.

Very good info.

Also when we talk about toothpaste remember to include in the proper mouth wash. Don't use alcohol based mouth washes like listerine. I read that people who smoke and used listerine had higher rates of mouth and throat cancers. The alcohol targeted normal healthy healing cells or something.

I use Biotene mouth wash. It dissolves plaque and has an enzyme that makes you produce more saliva that acts and an antibacterial.

I use Ipsab tooth powder, and brush as soon as possible after eating. If you shop around, you can find it for $4.50 or so for 4 oz. It lasts a LONG time. I just put a little in the palm of my hand from the dispenser and pick it up on a wet brush. It has peppermint oil in it and tastes great. No glycerin, SLS or fluoride.

The toothpaste that the original poster bought is not necessarily a safe option.  It contains sodium lauryl sulfate which is a very harmful chemical.

The best toothpaste I've found is Periobrite.  You can buy it at Whole Foods or online here:

i use this stuff

http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/ProductsbyCategory/Category/M042843.htm?cat=Personal%20Care

XyliWhite™ is a remarkable new toothpaste gel from NOW Foods that uses Xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol that looks and tastes similar to conventional sugar with one major exception - it has 40% fewer calories!

Unlike many of the chemicals found in other fluoride based, whitening toothpastes, xylitol is a natural, well-tolerated substance commonly found in fruits, berries and other natural sources. In fact, the human body even manufactures its own supply - up to 15 grams, everyday. Xyliwhite™ is an all-natural “refreshmint” toothpaste made from select materials and guaranteed to be of superior quality.* Xyliwhite™ toothpaste is completely safe for users of every age.

Our decision to introduce new Xyliwhite™ toothpaste was not made overnight. Rather, it was the result of intense worldwide research and official endorsements from 6 international dental associations.

Though it was discovered in the 1800’s, xylitol research has surged over the last 50 years. Some of the most notable studies (including those conducted at Finland’s Turku University) have tested xylitol’s ability to fight cavities, plaque, gingivitis, dry mouth and bad breath. Others have tested its ability to help neutralize plaque acids, assist in the re-mineralization of tooth enamel and attack the bacteria that can cause tooth decay. At the end of the day, this research ultimately suggests that xylitol may help promote a smile that is whiter, brighter and far more healthy.

anythings better then ammonia. and its omg fluoride flour salt paste!!

vinegar clears streaks better then any cleaner for glass and peroxide heals lesions in gums or scrapes.

people are seriously over prepyupy to deny that that mix can deal with things.

vinegar is a natural cleaner, it cleans auto paint of cars after a strait razor for a streak clean with a 1-10 mixture.

mixing it with peroxide makes it as potent as non/flouride solvent paste.

my experience tell me that we don't need toothpaste, i don't use nothing, i just brush with water... but i practice a macrobiotic diet, so i rarely eat something with sugar... but for those who eat things with sugar, please try to use a mix of water and integral sea salt (not refined or purified salt)... you will see the results  Shocked
you learn in macrobiotic, in terms of yin/yang (or acid/alkaline), the sugar (yin) and salt (yang), are at extreme opposite, so one 'expel' or 'repel' the other.
