GARCIA: Strange case of Obama birth record

 By Anne T. Garcia

I don't believe in black helicopters and I'm sure Elvis is really dead, so I try to avoid topics embraced by the kook fringe.

When Sean Hannity did a piece on "Hannity's America" questioning Barack Obama's legal right to be president I was wary. Then I remembered that Hannity broke the Bill Ayres story a year and a half ago. It turns out (O'Reilly Factor 10/21) Sen. Obama really did know Bill Ayres was an unrepentant terrorist.

It's time to revisit the nationality of Barack Obama. The senator's paternal grandmother says she was present in the delivery room at his birth-in Kenya. At least that is the claim of Pennsylvania lawyer Philip J. Berg.

To legally be president, one must be a natural born citizen of the United States of America. Being born in Kenya would not disqualify him, but some people would like to see his birth certificate.

This is not a partisan issue. The same question was asked of Sen. McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone. He quelled the criticism by releasing his birth certificate. Americans are now calling on Sen. Obama to do the same thing. Frankly, they would like to see the hard copy.

Images of his birth certificate are floating around the Internet and they are problematic. One copy has a seal affixed, the other does not. The certificate number is blacked out. Why?

The senator and his half-sister both say he was born in Hawaii, only they can't agree on which hospital he was born in.

Attorney Philip Berg filed suit in Pennsylvania in October, requesting the court to force Sen. Obama to produce a birth certificate. Mr. Berg, a former deputy attorney general in Pennsylvania and Democratic county chairman, is a life-long Democrat. His ostensible purpose is to make sure the U.S. Constitution is not violated.

According to Berg, even if Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii, his stepfather later changed his citizenship to Indonesian. Berg bases this on the years the senator was enrolled in the Indonesian public school system as Barry Soetoro (his stepfather's surname).

In those days Indonesia was at war and only Indonesian citizens were allowed to enroll in public school. If the senator's citizenship was switched to Indonesian, and later switched back, he would then be referenced as a naturalized citizen. In that case, he would not be eligible to be president.

How could a person rise to the level of United States senator without ever producing adequate documentation? Remember that Mr. Obama rose through the ranks in Illinois, where politics and corruption go together like ham and eggs. Our previous governor was sent to prison; our sitting governor may well end up there, too.

Thomas Lifson, publisher of the "American Thinker" asks this probative question. "If he has it [birth certificate] why hasn't he released it? If he does release it, game over. So why drag this out on technical grounds? It doesn't make sense."

Sen. Obama is very stingy with any kind of paper trail. He was an honor student, but will not release his records from Occidental College, Columbia University, or Harvard Law School. Would such records shed light on his nation of origin?

His penchant for secrecy extends to his political campaign. He refuses to reveal the identity of 2 million small donors, which is legal. Still, a lot of people would like to see the demographics of his donor base.

The question is: Where there's smoke is there fire, or just a smokescreen?

Barack Obama said to George Stephanopoulos, "John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. . ." on ABC's "This Week." The Obamas have an odd practice of not giving their daughters birthday gifts-birthday gifts are forbidden under Shariah law. Mr. Obama is not a stupid man. He misspoke and said there are 57 American states. There are 57 states in the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The Obama camp will probably run out the clock on the birth certificate conundrum. Ultimately the truth will come out. It always does.

Otto von Bismarck once observed, "God has special providence for drunks, idiots and the United States of America." Now would be a good time for some of that special grace to manifest.

" It is N-O-T racism. It is N-O-T muslimphobia. It is N-O-T garbage to expect the man to document his questionable citizenship status. This has always been a requirement of the office. It is incumbent upon him to do so. If he truly had the best interest of this country at heart he would have done so LONG ago. "

" Predictions come and go; they either pan out or they don't. I predict that if Obama becomes POTUS there will shortly be a constitutional crisis. I also predict that Obama (if elected) will be the first POTUS that will spend some time in a federal prison. I could be right; I could be wrong. If I am right, I will also predict that there will be racial tension in all of our major cities, if not worse. Try to remember; you read it here from a man whose initials are --jws "

" NCP. Why does it have to be racial? Stop throwing that card down. 98% of Black voters will vote for O, tell me that's not based on race? If whites voted like that, there would NEVER be a minority member in state or national office. The birth certificate issue is REAL. And would stop if Obama could produce one, HE CAN'T.
You must be president of the day dreamers for Obama. "

" These types of assertions can be readily researched on the web. here's a link that DISPROVES this bogus birth certificate claim. http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthcertificate.asp "

" I am sorry, and not to be too picky, but I believe you made a misstatement in your article. If OBama was born in Kenya, he would be disqualified and constitutionally unable to hold the presidency. Furthermore, it would have been illegal to have dual citizenship between Indonesia and the US at the time he was in school in Indonesia. Keep in mind those school records show that he was a citizen of Indonesia and, not that this matters, but that he was Muslim. Those records were not created by the wild-eyed right wingers, but were provided by Obama. Therefore, he would have forfeited his u.s. citizenship upon becoming an Indonesian citizen, even if it was merely to attend school. He would have then had to go through the naturalization process to regain his u.s. citizenship upon his return to the U.S. Yet, there is no evidence that this was done. If it was not done, then Barrack is still currently an Indonesian citizen and an illegal alien at that. Clearly not legally able to hold the office of POTUS. Either scenario is rather ugly and really needs to be properly investigated. If untrue, so be it. All hail President Obama! However, if true, then one of the greatest frauds in the history of this country is about to be perpetrated.... God save us all if that is the case. "

" Congratulations on a brilliant piece of political satire, in the style of Molly Ivens. You actually made people believe this was a serious article. "

" Ms. Garcia: When Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered a ptotential candidate this part of the Constitution was called antiquated by the right. Now we just have winers. Attacking the Bill of Rights and the overt misuse use of Executive powers by both old parties are real issues. Not this or Bill Ayers. Vietnam was wrong. Police state tactics were wrong. Sending our youth to die was wrong. It must be said, voting for Obama or McCain is wrong and remember our founders were domestic terrorists and I'm proud of that. "

" Ms. Garcia,

Good column.

If Obama has nothing to hide then why doesn't he produce his birth certificate to the court as John McCain did.

Also, you're right on Obama's slips of the tongue on the 57 states and his muslim faith.

Obama and his followers doth protest too much. "

" We will never see his birth certificate because those documents are protected and he will not release info that supports technical issue chasers. The Muslim state issue is only demonstrates that your muslimphobia has you living in a dream. "

" Why even publish this garbage? Just the propagation of ignorance. Congrats to the Suburban Journals on such high standard for journalism...or do you consider this freedom of speech...in that case let me make something up and submit it for publishing. There are actual people who believe this because they read it in the paper and are using this type of article to justify voting along with their racial bias. Remember that guy ... Hitler? "
