Bush praises Putin's role on Iran

The US president has thanked Russia's premier for his effective leadership in the nuclear fuel issue for Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant.

“Vladimir Putin and I worked on the issue and he showed leadership in it, which I would like to thank him for,” President George Bush said in the White House.

The chief executive recalled that then Russian president traveled to Iran and proposed supplies of Russian enriched uranium for Iran's civil nuclear energy program on the condition that spent Russian fuel rods be returned to Russia.

Russia subsequently delivered eight consignments of nuclear fuel to Iran for the start up of the Bushehr power plant.

While the United States accuses Iran of seeking a nuclear weapons program under the guise of uranium enrichment, Iran categorically denies the charges. Tehran emphasizes its nuclear activities are peaceful and aimed at power generation and various medical applications.
