another dark and disgusting advancement of military technology - shamefully this time from my country

Sarah Connor Has Failed -- the British Just Built Skynet

http://io9.com/5016092/sarah-connor-has-failed-++-the-british-just-built-skynet

With the launch of a new communications satellite, the British military has completed a highly advanced network that will allow robotic military units to be controlled at long range. Sound vaguely familiar? They actually named the thing Skynet. When the T-1000s come knocking, keep an eye out for the "Made in UK" sticker.

Skynet 5 is the latest iteration of a global communications system deployed by the British Armed Forces. The final satellite in the system was launched this week, and will allow high-bandwidth telecommunications between British forces located anywhere in the world. In addition to voice communications, it will allow data transfer and the remote control of robot airplanes, one of which is called "The Reaper." One of the manufacturers was quoted by BBC News as saying:

So, computers can talk directly to computers.

Are you terrified yet? It gets better. The system is actually privately owned and developed - the British Armed Forces are only promised a portion of the bandwidth as part of the contract. The one reassuring aspect is that the company is not called Cyberdyne.
Seriously, what the hell? Is it British humor to name something like this Skynet, or bureaucratic idiocy? Might as well get to work on the self-awareness chip and the "really angry at humans" algorithm. Image by: BBC News.

The Chinese have rockets pointed at every satellite owned by the U.S. and British militaries.  With the push of the button the Chinese can take them all out and blind and cripple both Nations.

The new terrifying age of warfare draws closer.  Shocked

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7419751.stm

The new Skynet constellation will allow the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force to pass much more data, faster between command centres. The bandwidth capacity of Skynet 5 is two-and-a-half times that of the old satellite constellation, Skynet 4. The new system will enable British forces to make use of next-generation weapons systems, such as the recently introduced Reaper drones.

Skynet

These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are deployed over Afghanistan but are remotely piloted by RAF personnel in the US. This is made possible only by Skynet's ability to handle the drones' real-time video feeds.

Other battlefield applications would include surgeons, unsure how best to treat badly injured soldiers, being able to send scan information back to the UK for a second assessment; and then using video conferencing to discuss cases.

Skynet 5 is the largest PFI (Private Finance Initiative) so far delivered to the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD). Under the PFI, the British military buys guaranteed capacity from its commercial supplier (Paradigm), which is free then to sell any spare capacity to friendly governments.

These third-party sales earn money for Paradigm and the MoD in what is a "shared gain" arrangement. The launch of the Skynet 5C satellite should provide substantial extra revenue potential.

When the PFI deal was originally set up, the MoD was expecting to receive two satellites; but the high cost of spacecraft insurance in the early 2000s prompted project chiefs to put that money into building an extra platform instead.

"In effect we've self-insured," said Mr Peto. "We've used the money we would have spent on insurance to build a third satellite.

"When we launch [Skynet 5C], we will have three very capable satellites to provide communications, not only for British forces but for our third-party market which makes this whole project viable."

Paradigm hopes the money it earns over the course of its contract (which runs to 2020) will be sufficient for it to reinvest in further spacecraft with enhanced payloads.

wow that Reaper carries as much ordnance as a Harrier jet by the looks of things, a nasty piece of kit, funny how they are called reconaissance yet are loaded with what looks like a couple of tons of missiles.

I find it pretty incredible that something remote-control in such an order as the Predator is produced.

I mean, if terrorists were truly sophisticated, they would cyber-jack one of those bad boys.

C.A.E.S.A.R.  in space....

However the British didn't just build this. QuinetiQ brought C2 to the UK and  shortly after they took over the SKynet systems in order to better hide it from prying American eyes.
The very first SKynet Satelite  was put into space in 1969 even.

Here is an actually decent wikipedia article regarding skynet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(satellites)

Skynet satellites are built by LoralSkynet now hiding under the name of a Canadian front company called telesat.....

Cheer up

It's probably got a dependance on Windows at some point.

Second thoughts....

BSOD
Humans locked out of the system

James Cameron should sue for copyright infringement.

I'm sorry Sarah.  If I was John Connor we would've won Tongue

Actually we would have failed in 79 when I was born hehe...

Aye one can dream ...lol  ....on a serious note the control consoles are windows based ... well I should say reporting consoles... because only CAESAR controls CAESAR at this point ...
However since they are all running as PTECH heads (as per their true design intention) they are all functioning flawlessly   (more so thatn one would expect for windows workstation terminals) ...

:/

The big difference is that in the movie it is all cgi sexy computer graphics. Meanwhile they already have the technology and it is not as high tech as the public are lead to belive.

See Afghanistan :

The target marker is either a lasser beam, as used on building sites, or an rfid which is just a simple chip.
The weapons delivery is just a good old fashioned radio controled aircraft - aka predator drone.

The scary point I'm trying to make is forget Sci-Fi Terminator, the technology is already here.
