shirteesdotnet, Hey Dave I forgot to say you are lucky your wife at least goes along with all this. My wife thinks I am insane and every time we talk she complains about the "waste" of money buying food and supplies. I just ordered the family pack from http://patriotfood.com/ and she is livid.

I want to get out of the city in the country or deep woods where it's safer but she hates bugs and farm or homestead life. You know what she actually said? "If all this does break down, I'd rather just get a chip than go through all that bugging out crap, or just go back to Japan." (she is Japanese). She is so fatalistic and apathetic. Trouble is, her attitude puts our daughter as well as me in harm's way.

Sorry for the delay in responding! Too many threads and I cant find my posts anymore there is too many of them.

My oldest brother married a Japanese lady (they now live in Osaka over 15 years now) and she is very easy going, but with finances she is very strict! Ha!

Sometimes I have to bend my wifes arm to get things done Smiley Not literally, but you know. She went through the collapse of the Soviet Union and shes not too big on talking about it all. She said prices on everything when sky rocket and then leveled out over time. She said it was all pretty chaotic for a while. Anyhow, after we had that earthquake here in LA a few months ago she is gung-ho getting prepared now and I sat down and explained everything to her. Why we need food storage, why we need bug out bags, etc. Hell, she has no prob with me buying gold now too Smiley Took her a while to come through on that one. I simply explained it that gold always holds value and paper money can lose value. Knowing how her ruble collapsed, she understood that immediately.

being mortgage free is certainly a blessing means you can never lose your home

I'll have to crunch the numbers tonite and see where we stand if we pay off some of our home. One thing Im always concerned about... we dont really own anything if we are paying yearly taxes on it, right? The feds can come in anytime and take it away for any reason.

Good!  My sis is buying ahouse so DROP BABY DROP!!

I just had to buy the Ex out of her half of the house.  The buyout last year would have been 40K.  But since the market tanked I only have to fork over 12K.  I am the only home owner happy about the housing market tanking.

The housing bust is really a land bust:

And it's been known for well over a century that land busts are the inevitable result of land speculation.
