Please define the 2007 version of what a "Liberal" is.
I know what a yuppie is. Yuppies are boot lickers and Bush munchers. I get that.
I think that the term "liberal" is misused just as the term "terrorist" is.
In my limited existance, anyone who disagree's with you is simply labeled a "liberal", like it's some sort of insult or the end to any argument, discussion or debate.

It' seems to be a new version of the "N" word that can no longer be spoken.

Thanks.

The terms "left" and "right" in the political sense go back to 1789 in France. When the French Estates-General (États-Généraux) met on May 6, 1789, the Third Estate commoners, who wanted less taxes and government control (i.e., "laissez-faire"), were seated on the left side of King Louis XVI, and the Second Estate nobles and First Estate clergy, who were the conservatives and wanted to maintain the government's power, sat on his right. (Prior to the May 1789 convention of the French Estates-General [the first meeting of which was on May 5, 1789], the last time the Estates-General had met was under King Louis XIII from October 27, 1614 to February 23, 1615.)

Also, "liberal" originally meant what we would call today (at least in the U.S. and Canada) "libertarian," i.e., laissez-faire free market, less taxes, less regulation, and gun ownership by the common people. Thus, in the original sense of the words, someone who wanted no taxes, all drugs to be legal, a free market, and armament of the common people would be a left-wing liberal.

The term "liberal" as it is commonly used today is purely and simply a misnomer meaning the opposite of what it originally meant, as those commonly called "liberals" today are about giving government more power, not in stripping government of power. Those commonly called "liberals" today are in fact *right-wing conservatives* in the original sense of that political term. So also, socialism and communism are exceedingly *right-wing* and *conservative* political philosophies, as they put all power into the hands of government, rather than strip government of power.

Of course, this change in the meaning of liberalism (such that today it means the opposite of what it originally meant) was by no accident. Authentic liberalism represents the only genuine threat to statism (i.e., right-wing conservatism, in the original sense of the term), and due to liberalism's triumphs in gaining the intellectual high-ground during the 19th century, it was necessary for the ruling elite to subvert the liberal agenda if they were to survive. The ruling elite did this by sabotaging the very meaning of the terms "liberalism" and "left-wing"--such that these terms now popularly mean the opposite of what they once did--via bankrolling and promoting self-termed "liberal" court intellectuals who in fact promote the right-wing, conservative agenda, i.e., statism, i.e., collectivism. Thus, in doing this, the ruling elite succeeded in changing the meaning of their oppositional philosophy to a philosophy that supports their empowerment! That is, the ruling elite created another branch of right-wing conservatism, nowadays called by the misnomer "liberalism," so also by the names of socialism and Communism.

For the history on how the "capitalist" (i.e., mercantilist) elite in the West bankrolled Communism (as well as National Socialism), see the below scholarly books by Antony C. Sutton, Ph.D.:

Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution, Antony C. Sutton, Ph.D. (New Rochelle, N.Y.: Arlington House Publishers, 1974) http://reformed-theology.org/html/books/bolshevik_revolution/index.html

Bush, Jr., like all modern U.S. presidents, is simply a puppet of his ruling elite backers. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt noted:

""
The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson--and I am not wholly excepting the Administration of W.W. The country is going through a repetition of Jackson's fight with the Bank of the United States--only on a far bigger and broader basis.
""

(From President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a letter to Col. Edward Mandell House, November 21, 1933; contained in F.D.R.: His Personal Letters, 1928-1945, edited by Elliott Roosevelt [New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1950], pg. 373.)

Roosevelt in the above letter mentioned President Woodrow Wilson ("W.W."). Below is what Woodrow Wilson himself wrote concerning this same matter:

""
Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.

...

[A]nd we have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated, governments in the civilized world--no longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and the duress of small groups of dominant men.
""

(From Woodrow Wilson, The New Freedom: A Call for the Emancipation of the Generous Energies of a People [New York and Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1913] http://www.gutenberg.org/files/14811/14811-8.txt .)

For the Marxian Trotskyist background of the neo-conservatives, see the below scholarly speech by Dr. Ron Paul, Republican Congressman from Texas. It gives many references and direct quotes from neo-conservative works, and so it's a valuable resource for further research.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul110.html

Here's some choice quotes from David Rockefeller:

"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure--one world, if you will. If that's the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it."--David Rockefeller, Memoirs (Random House, 2002), pg. 405

"One is impressed immediately by the sense of national harmony. ... There is a very real and pervasive dedication to Chairman Mao and Maoist principles. Whatever the price of the Chinese Revolution, it has obviously succeeded not only in producing more efficient and dedicated administration, but also in fostering high morale and community purpose. General social and economic progress is no less impressive. ... The enormous social advances of China have benefitted greatly from the singleness of ideology and purpose. ... The social experiment in China under Chairman Mao's leadership is one of the most important and successful in history"--David Rockefeller, in his article "From a China Traveler," New York Times, August 10, 1973, pg. 31

It's also important to note that among many other Marxist planks that have fully or partially been implemented in the U.S., plank No. 5 of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels's Communist Manifesto is "Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly." (See Manifesto of the Communist Party by Marx and Engels, English edition of 1888 http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/61 .)

To USERNAME:

Hi there, Let me start by saying that I am truly dissapointed to read that you felt, indeed, strongly attacked by my post.
I think that you gave me a very well written answer that cleary demonstrate a strong hability to express yourself
even in moments of anger. All the good to you my friend.

But please note that since 60% of communication is being achieved through body language, 30 % through the tone of voice and the remaining
10% through the words being used to convey a message, the internet and various forums (such as this one)  Wink mostly lacking the body language aspect
and the tone of voice (for evident reasons) are leaving lots of room for interpretation of intent.

Though in no ways, did I intend to make you look as a fool using "pop rhetoric and mainstream news stories", I will say that after being provided help by
THE CONSTITUTIONALIST through his answer, all you found to say (instead of "THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPLEMENTARY LINK") was "I still say if your going to provide
a link it should work - it's been like this for as long as I can remember." Come on man!! You filed a complaint. It was registered and properly adressed. The extra bitching was really not necessary and it shows a lack of appreciation for free information being transmited to you through Alex's sites as well as free supplementary help being given to you by people like the ones on this Forum. And this always makes me angry. Always. I made the decision to express that anger, in a humoristic fashion this time.
Cheers!

APEC protest groups guide
Date: Wednesday, 5 September 2007
Luke McKenna writes:

As APEC begins to hot up, there has been large-scale debate over the risks protestors will potentially pose to the summit. But are the demonstration groups all a bunch of violent, ideological extremists? To help you decide where you stand, Crikey has compiled our own cut-out guide to the weekend's APEC protests.

Stop Bush Coalition (will return to being the Stop The War Coalition after APEC):

The Stop Bush Coalition vows to fight the "destructive" and "unsustainable" Bush and Howard administrations by promoting peace, democracy, clean energy and the rights of working people everywhere. The group's website advertises its peaceful APEC protest organised for September 8th, at Sydney Town Hall. See the full details and march route here.

The SBC is largely dominated by the Democratic Socialist Perspective :

The DSC is a Marxist group within the Socialist Alliance, seeking to "to build a mass revolutionary socialist party that is capable of organising the Australian working class to bring into being a socialist society through replacing the political rule of the capitalist class with a government of the working class." It will be supporting the BSC rally.

Socialist Alliance:

The Socialist Alliance is an anti-capitalist group. Its website proclaims: "We stand for socialism -- a democratic society that is run by and for working people, not the tiny, greedy, destructive elite that now rules. We stand for putting people before profit -- for the millions not the millionaires." It will also be supporting the BSC rally.

Resistance:

Resistance is a socialist youth group that aims to rally "the overwhelming numbers and economic power of the working class to give it the power to overthrow capitalism and replace it with socialism." The group is responsible for organising the controversial APEC student walkouts right across the country on September 5th at 1:30pm.

Iraq Veterans Against the War:

The IVAW group began in the US "to give a voice to the large number of active duty service people and veterans who are against this war, but are under various pressures to remain silent." It calls for the immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq, reparations for the people of Iraq, and full benefits and support for returning servicemen and women. Members will be participating and speaking at the major SBC rally on Saturday.

FLARE in the Void:

F.L.A.R.E is a pre-APEC convergence space, promoting the opportunity "to learn from each other & strengthen networks of resistance beyond a single summit protest." It opened last night at the Tooth Gallery, and will run until September 9th. See the full address and details here.

The Melbourne Alliance for Civil Disobedience Co-ordination (AC/DC):

AC/DC is an anarchist group that has controversially announced its intention to 'violently' disrupt the summit (they told Crikey that their definition of violent differs markedly from the media's). In an open letter posted on a variety of internet forums, the group calls for a "mass, strategic intervention". See a copy of the letter here.

Mutiny:The Mutiny collective (mutineers@graffiti.net)

Mutiny is one of the anarchist groups linked to violence at last year's G20 summit. Mutiny published a controversial open letter to APEC protest organisers in May. Here are some key excerpts:

"We're concerned to hear that the Sydney Stop Bush Coalition has decided to produce posters saying 'join the peaceful protest.'

...Insisting on the image of 'peaceful protest' only amplifies the wedge politics of the police and media: and it doesn't stop police violence. It seems downright irresponsible to promise – or demand - peace. Obedience will not make us safer.

In this context, it seems likely that, whatever the desire of the organisers, people will choose to attend the protest prepared for self-defence or other disobedient actions. Is the call for 'peaceful protest' an attempt by the small group producing the poster to say that such tactics and politics are not welcome at the protest?

This letter was not written because we're planning so-called 'violent protest' or know of some secret plans. We have no idea. Preparing for APEC protests has not been a priority for us as a group.

...We write in the hope that we or groups with politics similar to ours would be able to organise for APEC alongside others – in the hope that a diversity of tactics will be possible and the spaces for discussion and action will not be shut down."

See the full letter here.

The Mutiny Collective is reported to be distributing a manual, which details ways to cause public mayhem during major events. (source)

Maritime Union of Australia:

The MUA will be holding an APEC protest festival to "assert fair trade, real action on global warming, genuine development to alleviate poverty and respect for the labour rights and human rights of all the peoples of our vast Asia Pacific Region". It will include food, music, performances, speakers and information stalls. There will be no march from the rally to the festival to help ensure the safety of the event. The event will be held on Friday September 7th at Hide Park in Sydney. It kicks off at 11am.

Latin American Solidarity Network:

The Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET) is an "independent and inclusive group of people working in solidarity with Latin American grassroots movements and its struggles." In Australia, LASNET aims to "raise awareness of the struggles of Latin American people and works to support these initiatives through local and national activism." LASNET will be participating in FLARE in the Void and in the Saturday protest march.

And then there's the protest protest group, Aussies for ANZUS:

Formed just last weekend by the "proudly Liberal member" John Ruddick, Aussies for ANZUS is a group designed to welcome the US President to APEC and promote the Australian-US alliance. Its creator boasts a five-by-three metre banner than announces, "We support Bush, we love America, aussies4anzus.com", decorated with both countries' flags. The group has been given police permission to position themselves within the APEC security zone. See full details of the campaign here.

Melbourne protesters searched for drugs

Jano Gibson
September 6, 2007

APEC protesters travelling from Melbourne to Sydney have been stopped and searched for drugs in an operation by NSW police officers this evening.

Fifteen people driving in a mini-van and two sedans were forced to pull off the Hume Highway about 4pm after police set up a road block near Tarcutta, about an hour north of the Victorian border.

The convoy was channelled into a truck stop area where about 30 police officers and a drug sniffing dog were waiting.

"Initially we were under the impression it was a regular booze bus but as soon as we pulled into the parking stop we realised that wasn't the case," said Anthony Main, national organiser for the Socialist Party.

"One of the plain clothes officers approached me. He identified himself as an APEC inspector. He said he had a warrant to do standard drug searches ... and he informed us he would be doing that today."

Mr Main said all members of the group were individually searched and their vehicles were checked to see if they were roadworthy.

He said the main thing the police appeared to be interested in were appointments he had scheduled in his diary.

"The NSW police are obviously trying to intimidate us and hinder us ... We think it's just another over the top example of the police trying to stifle any form of dissent."

The police allowed the protest group to leave about 6.30pm, he said.

"When they spoke to us just prior to us leaving, they told us no one had been arrested."

Comment is being sought from NSW Police.
