#1: 80% of callers from 12:30pm to 1:00pm were Ron Paul supporters - 3 of them democrats

#2: Newt Gingrich [Owned 100% by American Enterprise Institute and PNAC of "we need a new pearl harbor" fame] using "Cheney Mushroom Cloud" tactics to push the AEI outsourcing project of National RFID "tag them and bag them" policy.

He told everybody to support this Nazi Fascist Slavery policy that defies all concept of human rights.  He also said specifically that it should be outsourced [yeah because AEI's policy of outsourcing the Iraq war worked so well].  Additionally he said that any state that does not support it should be cut from all federal funding.

Note: hundreds of supporters from everywhere came from nowhere and all the yellow shirted romneys were stunned.  Many of the yellow shirts shifted and started waving Ron Paul signs[/color]

Straw Poll Votes Being Tallied
Thousands Meet GOP Candidates At Straw Poll

POSTED: 6:09 pm CDT August 11, 2007
UPDATED: 6:15 pm CDT August 11, 2007

AMES, Iowa -- Thousands of Republicans in Ames on Saturday are choosing who they want to become president in 2008.

Voting just wrapped up at 6 p.m., and in about an hour the results will be announced at 7 p.m.

About 30,000 to 33,000 Republicans have come to meet

candidates and cast their votes.

Ed Noyes left his home state of South Dakota and Sturgis to attend.

"I just drove all the way from the black hills. I was at Sturgis rally and I didn't want to miss coming here today," said Ed Noyes, from South Dakota.

Outside Jack Trice Stadium, the parking lots were packed, and outside the Hilton Coliseum, the crowds grew in size and volume.

"This is like you know the heartland of America. This is America. This is beautiful. I'm really enjoying it," said Judy Ward of Omaha, Neb.

Straw poll goers said they're enjoying the event despite Iowa's blazing sun, high humidity and 90-degree temperatures.

Candidates enticed voters with free snow cones, air-conditioned tends and misting fans to keep cool.

"We listened to Sam Brownback in the tent. We had a great meal. We got some literature to pass out. (We) got some homemade ice cream," Ward said.

Candidates are campaigning hard -- posing for photos, signing autographs and talking politics.

"In the straw poll, I think my chances are pretty bad. I'm probably going to be in the bottom somewhere," said candidate John Cox.

He said a less-than-stellar showing at the straw poll does not mean he will drop out.

"You're not getting rid of me that easy," Cox said.

Cox said he sees the poll as a chance to be seen by national media who flock to Iowa for the historic event, and to get Iowa voters to take notice before they case a more meaningful vote in the Iowa caucuses.

"This is the point where a lot of politicians are going to decide, "Do I have the support? Do I stay in? Do I drop out?" said attendee Jeffrey Hedquist.

Two major candidates, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, are not participating in the straw poll. Republicans candidates Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, John Cox, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Tommy Thompson and Sam Brownback are in Ames. Each candidate was given 15 minutes to speak before a crowd inside Hilton Coliseum.

The Republican Party said it expects to raise $1 million at the event.

Results are expected to be announced at 7 p.m.

UPDATE: GOP candidate's wife is hospitalized before key straw poll / Associated Press - August 11, 2007 4:44 PM ET
AMES, Iowa (AP) - A campaign spokesman says the wife of GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul was hospitalized today (Saturday) with an irregular heartbeat.Carol Paul became ill on Saturday morning and was taken to an area hospital, says Jesse Benton, a Paul spokesman. A Republican congressman from Texas, Paul was delayed in arriving at the high profile Republican straw poll in Ames today (Saturday) in order to stay with his wife. Benton told The Associated Press that Mrs. Paul was recovering at hospital in Des Moines from a heart condition that causes her heart rate to get very low. Benton says Mrs. Paul could be released as early as this (Saturday) evening.

Paul giving his all in Iowa Straw Poll
AMES, Iowa, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Underdog candidate Ron Paul has his supporters out in force in Iowa this weekend for the first significant test of the U.S. presidential race.

The New York Times said the Republican Texas congressman’s bumper stickers and brochures are seen just about everywhere in Ames as Paul jostles for position with the equally high-profile Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts.

The newspaper observed that while Romney has spared little expense on events to rev up support among the Hawkeye State’s Republican voters, Paul is relying on an army of loyalists from out of state to keep his name in front of people.

The Straw Poll voting Saturday is considered a run-up to the Iowa caucuses.

And the Winner Is...

...not yet. But it's getting nutty in here with the Ron Paul people chanting wildly.
7:02: And the announcement is that it will be at least another 15 minutes before the results.

7:05: It should probably be noted that one of the effects of Mitt Romney buying and busing his support is that they've all cleared out at this point. The whole crowd is Ron Paul folks, some Brownback folks, and some Huckabee folks.

Voting Machine Trouble at Iowa?
Saturday, August 11, 2007 - FreeMarketNews.com
http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=47145
That would be sweet, sweet irony, if the voting machines the RPI used today failed. Why are the results taking so long to come out? And why is the rumored total number of votes so low? Could 2000's numbers have been inflated by that many fraudulent double-votes?

=====

The Straw Poll will be released in about 10 minutes (and, of course, we will have them up as soon as we get them, and they will be streamed on our live video channel as they are announced). The scuttlebutt is that about 14,000 votes were cast. The Iowa GOP was saying they were expecting up to 30,000 votes, so getting only half that many -- and therefore only half as much money -- will likely cause them some hardship.

=====

Of particular note: Not a single Tancredo supporter could be spotted in the audience in front of the press risers, and the Romney presence is somewhat minimal. Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Sam Brownback have the three most visible presences right now. I doubt it means anything, but it would be unfair for me not to at least tell you about it. -Independent

Yes, We're Still Waiting
http://www.iowaindependent.com/showDiary.do;?diaryId=776
by: Chase Martyn Saturday (08/11) at 19:49 PM We're still waiting -- 45 minutes after results were supposed to be announced -- to find out the winner of today's Straw Poll. With the vote total coming in at under 14,000, two possibilities emerge: Could the top two have come so close to each other that, in such a small electorate, the percentage difference would trigger a recount of some sort?  (This scenario would be a major blow to Gov. Mitt Romney, and it would give a boost to whomever is number two.) Or, could there have been an equipment malfunction? Any other possibilities anyone can think of?

Voting Machine Problems
http://www.iowaindependent.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=778
by: Garance Franke-Ruta
Saturday (08/11) at 20:04 PM
I just ran into Romney spokesman Tim Albrecht and he said he's been told that there is a voting machine problem, and that this is what's leading to the delay in announcing the results and protracting the process of counting the votes.

Confirmed: Voting Machine Malfunctions, Hand Recount Necessary for Some 1,500 Ballots
http://www.iowaindependent.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=779
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 20:08 PM
The Iowa GOP just confirmed that one voting machine malfunctioned during today's Straw Poll, and some 1,500 ballots must be recounted by hand.  We will keep you up to date with information as it comes in.

As yet, the GOP has not released an estimate of how much longer we will have to wait for results.
______________________________________

Here is the deal 30,000 -33,000 came out to vote.

Then they said 14,000 votes were all they had

now 1,500 have issues.

so easy to see that Dr. Paul won by at least 60& and that there is no reason to do electronic voting for 33,000 votes, I could have done it single handedly by now.

Steve King On Now
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 20:15 PM
http://www.iowaindependent.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=780
Congressman Steve King says results will come in the next few minutes.

Steve King says the State Auditor has gone over the results of the Straw Poll and that "this is the best system that's out there; it has a tremendous amount of integrity....  So you know that when you get these results, they're the ones that you can count on."

"We've raised the standards as high as they can be for a Straw Poll," he continues.

Results will be announced from last place to first place.  "Some people will leave this city a little sad, but they can't be sad about the effort," King concluded.

And he keeps looking over to see if GOP official Ray Hoffman is ready to report the results, and Hoffman still isn't there.  So King is killing time.

Now he's railing against "socialism" and "Democrats in Congress."  "On the judiciary committee one day I called them all a bunch of Marxists and they weren't even offended!"

And he appears to just have contradicted the Republican Party of Iowa by claiming that there wasn't a problem "with the computers or anything."
Ray HOffman is out now.

WHAT?
This has got to be rigged. I was there. There was no way that Tancredo had more voters than RP.

2nd Amendment and National ID card
Ron Paul laid it out, those are the last two things they will take before they really get crazy.  On the C-SPAN video, half the yeallow shirts were waving Ron Paul Signs.Does anybody know why they could not have paid a few college student $12 an hour to count 15,000 votes. This whole thing is such a sick joke.  It is like waking up to hear Rod Sterling.

Only voters pay the $35
It was my understanding that the campaigns were only passing out vouchers before the event, and they only paid the $35 for the people who showed up to vote. I think the RPI took a major hit today.

Machine malfunction?
What are the chances that one of the 18 machines malfunctioned? My wife works the polls in Story County nearly every election,  and they have never malfunctioned. These are the same machines that were used today. No way that the machine with the most votes (1800 votes, more than 12% of the votes on one machine out of 18) is the very one that didn't work.

Falls Short
Looks like Romney finished 5,000 votes less then expected.
Spent $2,200 per vote.
Ron Paul spent $200 per vote.

Talking to someone who organizes "Get out the vote efforts"
As a campaign consultant, I know that money equals votes... Romney doesn't provide bus rides and tickets.... romney doesn't finish first. Ron Paul supporters provided their own way... and only 800 could have recieved free tickets.
Were there any Romney supporters left in the building to hear the results? No.
The place was filled with Ron Paul signs.  Who has real support? Who has paid support? Who has more devotion, a patriot or a mercenary?
The mercenaries left... the patriots hung around.

You're the expert, but...
The Romney folks were busy celebrating outside.  You act as if Romney's buses weren't paid for by CONTRIBUTORS--people who put their money were they believe it belongs (even if you take out Romney's own money, it's way more than Paul's wildest dreams).  Your fallacy that gets way too much press, and it's laughable.

Romney's loans
Actually, when you subtract Romney's debts and the millions of dollars he has "loaned" his own campaign, he's about on par with Ron Paul in terms of dollars in the bank.

And who believes the vote count?
The optical scan machines that they use in Story County have not malfunctioned before, so it is just too convenient that one breaks down today. And wouldn't you know it that the machine that broke down had the most votes!

Excellent!
First off, let's stop the conspiracy stuff.  This is great news for the Ron Paul campaign.  Mitt Romney spent tons of money and over a year in Iowa and only bought 4,000 some votes.  Not really good if you ask me, but he did win.  Ron Paul was concentrated really in the past week and got a little over 1300.  I think that is GREAT news!   To my fellow Ron Paul supporters-quit wasting your time talking about conspiracies and malfunctioning machines, what is that going to change? NOTHING.  Take this as a good thing and run with it!  Don't be negative! God Bless and go Ron go! =)

Amazing how easy it is to mind control 300 million Americans into believing that a Democrat from Massechussetts who funds abortions and co-owns juvenille centers under suspicion of instituting sexual molestation can win an Iowa GOP straw poll. I hope you all wake up before Romney takes your kids to the FEMA camps

Ron Paul Mistake
I made a mistake and voted for Romney.
Ron Paul was clearly the best candidate and I feel very upset with my vote.  My wife also voted for Romney and we talked on our way home and both agree that we made a mistake.  My son is from Indiana and also came as a Romney supporter and he also feels the same.  It appears we're going to change our vote by January to Ron Paul.

Were building up steam!
Some may be disappointed with the 5th place finish of Ron Paul. I for one am pleased. This shows we got 10% of the vote which is far better than the 2% that has been claimed before.Ron Paul only spent a week and very little money in Iowa and still came out strong. Right now Ron pauls campaign is still moving up slowly, while others are quickly tumbling downward.

Do Fun 'n Games -- and $$$ -- Trump Sanity in Iowa's Straw Poll?
by: Herb Strentz
Saturday (08/11) at 23:47 PM
[Commentary] While pundits weigh forth on the results of the Iowa Straw Poll, one winner - the Iowa State Republican Party - is skedaddling out of town, with a suitcase of money, relieved that more of the gullible still have not caught on to its game.  Or, even if they have caught on - a Des Moines Register headline characterized the straw poll as a "shakedown" - the Iowa GOP at least makes the fleecing enjoyable.

Nevertheless, the Iowa GOP may have profited less than it did in the straw poll of 1999, the last time no incumbent was among the candidates for the party's nomination.  In the straw poll and Iowa caucus mentality of meeting expectations, the state GOP did not fare as well as predicted - that suitcase wasn't as bulging as some thought it might be.

Fair Tax Voters Boost Huckabee
by: Garance Franke-Ruta
Saturday (08/11) at 21:28 PM
Voters bused to the Ames Straw Poll by Americans for Fair Taxation helped give a boost to suprise second-place poll winner Mike Huckabee, according to both a spokesman for the group and Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman. Asked about things that might have made the difference for Huckabee, who did not bus voters to the poll and purchased about 1850 tickets for supporters, Saltsman said, "We talked a lot about the fair tax."

The group, better known as FairTax.org, bused about 500 voting Iowans and 1,000 other supporters to the Straw Poll today, according to FairTax.org national director of grassroots Mike Rose. The group sponsored a ferris wheel -- the "Fairest Wheel," they called it -- at the Straw Poll, as well as a fan-cooled tent serving barbeque and dessert to supporters. This came on the heels of a two-week, 25-stop bus tour across the state to drum up enthusiasm for the group's tax reform plan, which Huckabee supports. Poll winner Mitt Romney and third-place finisher Sen. Sam Brownback do not support the plan.

All told the group spend $150,000 on the Straw Poll, according to national spokesman Ken Hoagland -- roughly the same amount as the the Huckabee campaign itself. "We're about six inches off the ground," said Hoagland. "We see it as a victory for our issue."

"Over the past eight months John McCain has met with Iowans across the state, built a broad base of support, and demonstrated why he is the most prepared candidate to lead America from day one.

"We are fully committed to competing successfully in the Iowa caucuses, and we look forward to continuing to campaign aggressively in the Hawkeye State."

Steve King On Now
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 20:15 PM

Confirmed: Voting Machine Malfunctions, Hand Recount Necessary for Some 1,500 Ballots

The Iowa GOP just confirmed that one voting machine malfunctioned during today's Straw Poll, and some 1,500 ballots must be recounted by hand.  We will keep you up to date with information as it comes in.

Yes, We're Still Waiting
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 19:49 PM
We're still waiting -- 45 minutes after results were supposed to be announced -- to find out the winner of today's Straw Poll.

With the vote total coming in at under 14,000, two possibilities emerge:

Could the top two have come so close to each other that, in such a small electorate, the percentage difference would trigger a recount of some sort?  (This scenario would be a major blow to Gov. Mitt Romney, and it would give a boost to whomever is number two.)

Or, could there have been an equipment malfunction?

Any other possibilities anyone can think of?

Is Voting Machine Trouble Possible?
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 19:33 PM
That would be sweet, sweet irony, if the voting machines the RPI used today failed.  Why are the results taking so long to come out?

And why is the rumored total number of votes so low?  Could 2000's numbers have been inflated by that many fraudulent double-votes?

15 Minute Delay
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 19:07 PM
And here I was, impressed that GOP officials were making their way to the stage on time to announce the results.  Now it turns out we'll have to wait another 15 minutes before finding out who won and, more importantly, who came in second.

Vote Totals Significantly Lower Than Expected
by: Chase Martyn
Saturday (08/11) at 18:55 PM
The Straw Poll will be released in about 10 minutes (and, of course, we will have them up as soon as we get them, and they will be streamed on our live video channel as they are announced).

The scuttlebutt is that about 14,000 votes were cast.  The Iowa GOP was saying they were expecting up to 30,000 votes, so getting only half that many -- and therefore only half as much money -- will likely cause them some hardship.

Ron Paul – Nearly 10 Percent of Iowa Straw Poll Vote
Saturday, August 11, 2007 - FreeMarketNews.com
http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=47146
News Analysis

Presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-TX) seems to have proved that his campaign can turn electronic sentiment into real votes. Sources close to the campaign expected – along with the GOP – that about 25,000 votes would be cast at the Iowa Straw Poll on Saturday, August 11, and said that anything over five percent of the vote could be considered as proving that Ron Paul’s electronic presence was a tangible asset. This is based on national polling that shows Ron Paul at only 2 percent.

But only about 14,000 votes were reportedly cast. Thus Ron Paul’s showing of 1305 votes is almost 10 percent, or double what sources said was the base level of support that the campaign hoped to achieve in the Iowa Straw Poll.

By finishing fifth in the Iowa Straw Poll with about 10 percent of the vote, sources close to the campaign say that Ron Paul has shown that his candidacy is real and that national polls showing him at two percent are probably a reflection of lack of knowledge of his candidacy rather than a reflection of his standing, nationwide.

Update: Whether malfunctioning voting machines, which delayed the tally by about an hour, will give rise to controversy over vote totals either for Ron Paul or for others remains to be seen. Developing ...

Admittedly, this reporter was skeptical when numbers like 40,000 were thrown around when people were estimating the number of attendees at the Straw Poll. Now, we see where that number comes from. At 11:30, the crowd has arrived. Hundreds are chowing down on Hickory Farms barbecue under the Mitt Romney tent, while a smaller but still impressive number eats Famous Dave's next door at Sam Brownback's headquarters. -RealClearPolitics

PARTIAL TIMELINE OF EVENTS - Full Timeline HERE.

August 11, 2007
Ron Paul – Nearly 10 Percent of Iowa Straw Poll Vote
Sources close to the campaign expected – along with the GOP – that about 25,000 votes would be cast at the Iowa Straw Poll on Saturday, August 11...

But only about 14,000 votes were reportedly cast.
And THAT right there is grounds for suspicion given the attention this straw poll was generating.

The Straw Poll has certified 14,203 ballots cast, but the totals for the candidates add up to av even 14,300.

Iowa Straw Poll Results and Analysis
Mitt Romney is a joke. He had 100 buses, over 1,000 volunteers, and actually poured lots of money in this straw poll and he only got 32% against a field of almost exclusively second and third tier candidates. This is a pathetic showing by someone who is considered one of the first tier candidates. Romney needed at least 40% to avoid a weak performance and he failed. I think this is the beginning of the end for the Romney campaign.
There is no law requiring me to believe these results, and I don't. - M. R.

Romney Jokes About Cheating in Poll

Final Piece Of Iowa GOP Treachery In Straw Poll 2007
"Each campaign was welcome to have representatives witness the feeding of the paper ballots into the counting computers but that there would not be a manual count of any kind. I then asked what would happen to the original paper ballots. She asked me to hold for a moment while she checked. In our earlier phone conversation she said that I needed to talk to "Eric" the Iowa State GOP's Political Director so I can only imagine she was likely getting directions from him. She came back on the line to say that the paper ballots would remain with the machines and would not elaborate further. I asked if the paper would be destroyed and she would not/could not answer.

"So there you have it. The same machines that California just decertified 3 days ago and Florida is in the spot light about as well, are going to be used to determine the future . . . ."

FLASHBACK: Auditor reprimanded for poll setup failure
Secretary of State Chet Culver reprimanded Story County Auditor Mary Mosiman on Friday for not responding quickly enough in opening a new voting station at Parks Library for Monday.
Bush carried Iowa by just 13,000 votes in 2004. Mosiman, the lady running this weekend's straw poll, appears to have systematically reduced polling stations in areas which would have voted for John Kerry. - M. R.

Story County Auditor Mary Mosiman was criticized Saturday for her decision not to open an added satellite voting station Monday at Iowa State University.

Ames Straw Poll Gets Legal Challenge
Paul campaign staffers acknowledge asking Iowa Republican leaders to count paper ballots in the straw poll as well as using voting machines.

They said the Diebold machines to be used have been decertified in other states.

Voting At The Iowa Straw Poll: Fraud-Proof, Honest & Secure ... NOT!
The Republican Party of Iowa will host the Iowa Straw Poll on August 11, however, the voting procedure will be conducted with the assistance and oversight of the Story County Auditor's Office with assistance from the State Auditor's Office.
So, let's take a closer look at the Story County Auditor's Office.

Checking their website, we find the chief auditor is one Mary Mosiman!

Now, we pay a visit to Mitt Romney's website and sure enough, we find Mary Mosiman listed as a member of the Romney for President leadership team!

So of course the mainstream media assures us that anyone concerned for the accuracy of this Saturday's Straw Poll is just being "paranoid." - M. R.

Iowa GOP Extorting Ron Paul Campaign
Director of communications for the Ron Paul Campaign, Jesse Benton, stated today that the Iowa GOP would charge the Paul camp $184,000 if they wanted to verify a paper count of the coming Iowa straw poll. Today, on the Dale Williams radio show, Mr. Benton said there will be a manual electronic count of the Iowa poll results. What Mr. Benton did not explain, as exposed in a previous National Expositor Article, “it is commonly known that this manual count” with Diebold machines “would only consist of spot checks of the voting machines for device calibration purposes. This does not constitute a verifiable check of the accuracy from either an engineering or statistical perspective.”

Iowa Straw Poll Voting Machines in Question
Yesterday, Ernest Hancock, candidate for Arizona secretary of state spoke with Mary Tiffany, communications director for the Iowa state Republican Party. During the conversation, Tiffany confirmed that there will be no manual recount for the Iowa straw poll that occurs on Saturday.
"...there will be no manual recount for the Iowa straw poll..."

"...there will be no manual recount for the Iowa straw poll..."

"...there will be no manual recount for the Iowa straw poll..."

There is always the possibility that enough people will vote for Ron Paul to make stealing the straw poll impossible, but unless Ron's Iowa numbers match his online poll performance, we can assume that once again the electronic voting machines are stealing the country for the war party. - M. R.

State decides to secure electronic voting machines
"When NASA discovers a flow or a potential safety concern in the space shuttle, it doesn't continue launching the missions...," Bowen said. "It scrubs the missions until the problem is fixed."

Her announcement, made just nine minutes before a midnight deadline, was condemned by the head of the state's county registrar's association, Contra Costa Registrar Stephen Weir.

Weir said Bowen's actions -- along with an unusual audit in which she dispatched several computer experts to try to hack into the machines, which they did -- had undermined public confidence in the security of the new electronic machines. But her solutions, he said, would not do anything to restore the public peace of mind, especially for elections that will occur this year, such as a special Congressional election in Los Angeles in two weeks.
Memo to Registrar Stephen Weir: if there is no paper trail, the people in California (or anywhere else in the US, for that matter) cannot feel confident about the results of any election.

Until and unless that occurs, all voting results have to be looked at as suspect. - M. R.

Romney Wins Straw Poll, Top Fundraiser Resigns
11

2007
http://bloggernista.com/2007/08/11/romney-wins-straw-poll-top-fundraiser-resigns/
I am sure that Romney is all smiles after winning the straw poll in Iowa tonight, I am also sure that he is smiling a little bit less that one of his national finance committee co-chairs has been indicted on fraud charges. Oops!

A top fund-raiser for Mitt Romney who was indicted this week in Maryland on a $32 million fraud scheme has resigned from his position with the campaign as a national finance committee co-chair, a
spokesman for Mr. Romney said.

A federal grand jury in Maryland unsealed its 23-count indictment of the fund-raiser, Alan B. Fabian, 43, on Thursday for money laundering, mail fraud, bankruptcy fraud, perjury and obstruction of justice.

Mr. Fabian, who had been one of 35 co-chairs on Mr. Romney’s national finance committee, allegedly ran up $32 million in fake purchases with his consulting company, Maximus Inc., based in northern Virginia, and
pocketed the money for himself.

He became a “bundler,” one of those who commit to bringing in large sums through their own networks of donors, for Mr. Romney’s campaign back in January, having previously served as a major fundraiser for
George W. Bush.

Mr. Fabian contributed the maximum of $2,300 to Mr. Romney’s candidacy. The campaign will be returning his contribution, said Eric Fehrnstrom, a Romney campaign spokesman.

“We have accepted Mr. Fabian’s resignation from his unpaid, volunteer position on the national finance committee,” he said in a statement.

German immigrant new chair of Iowa GOP
Monday, January 17, 2005, 11:10 AM
By O.Kay Henderson
http://www.radioiowa.com/gestalt/go.cfm?objectid=8EC5DC7A-7882-4D1E-A78B851F752CC54A

A German immigrant is the new chairman of the Iowa Republican Party. Ray Hoffman, a Sioux City businessman, was elected to the post this weekend (Saturday). The party's vice-chair will again be Leon Mosley, a black republican from Waterloo. "Isn't it neat? What a mix," Hoffman says. "It just shows you opportunity is here in the party." Hoffman says it answers the charge that the G-O-P doesn't welcome minorities into its "big tent." "I mean my gosh, how (much) bigger do you want to get?" Hoffman asks. "We have one man on this side. You have an immigrant on the other side. It doesn't get any bigger than that, you know, but that's all about America. This country is just unbelievable. We're the best in the world." Hoffman left Germany a few years after World War II when he was a teenager. "Came here when I was 16, and landed in Norfolk, Virginia. From there, we went to Washington, D-C and eventually wound up in 1972 coming to the state of Iowa and loving it," he says. Hoffman laughed when a reporter suggested that -- as a successful immigrant -- he may be Iowa's version of movie star-turned-governor Arnould Schwarzenegger. Hoffman says when he heard the California governor tell his story during a speech at the Republican National Convention last summer, he did think Schwarzenegger was "telling my story." Hoffman says his ship from Germany landed here during a longshoreman's strike, and he made a fist-full of money in his first few hours in America as people on the ship paid him to help them get their bags off the boat. Hoffman runs a restaurant and a gift shop in Sioux City. He's also a stockbroker. He got involved in republican party politics when he moved to Sioux City. Hoffman says republicans in Sioux City started using his restaurant for meetings, and he listened to the party's message and thought "that's exactly how I'm thinking." In 1990, his wife ran for the state Senate and lost by about 140 votes. She was an Iowa delegate to the G-O-P's national convention in Houston in 1992, and he went along as a guest. "Once I saw what was going on, I was absolutely, totally hooked, so from that day on, I've been solid, 100 percent, just go-go-go republican," Hoffman says. The 2006 election in Iowa will feature a race for governor as well as closely-contested races for the state legislature. Hoffman's first task as party chair is to hire staff, then he hopes to shape a unified message. "Build the party, communicate with the party and then put efforts together, put our heads together -- come up with a plan, come up with a theme and then go out and run with it," Hoffman says.
