Well, what is the purpose of existence itself?
You should really ask, what is it useful for?
It's the best insulator out there and it was used in the Stardust mission to collect small grains of dust coming off of a comet.

That stuff is very cool indeed. I first heard of it was on one of those future tech shows. It has some amazing properties, and yes it was used for dust collection, and has been used for heat resistance, and all kinds of other things, in part because it is so extremely light.
