29/04/2008: China - The Great Firewall of China - Story Archive - Foreign Correspondent

The Great Firewall of China
Reporter: Stephen McDonell

LEAD STORY
SERIES 17
EPISODE 33

The Tibetan rebellion and subsequent Chinese crackdown has shown, again, how effective is China’s elaborate system of internet control.

While images of the conflict in Tibet have been seen around the world on the home front they’ve been blocked by a sophisticated filtering system known as the Great Firewall of China.

China maintains tight control of public opinion by censoring many popular international web sites.

But as Beijing Correspondent Stephen McDonell reports China’s bloggers are determined to be heard.

I saw a piece on SBS last night.

The Chinese want to stay in power.

One man said "When you open a window it is inevitable flies will come in...if you do not open the window you will suffocate."

Meaning they aren't prepared to censor everything, that'll start a rebellion; teenagers can't access Multiplayer Online Games etc.

Yeah, great program! I think it was Den Xiao Ping that made the fly comment.

I have set up my PC at home with a TV card so I can record and then upload immediately. I plan to start uploading as much as I can.

By the way, I was riding my bike home last night and I saw the start of the Taxi Drivers protest here in front of Flinders Street Station. I wanted to stop and watch but I was running late. If I had a video camera I would have stopped for sure. I need to get a camera.

If you capture from tv directly to PC how do you get it to fit on youtube without quality degradation?

I find even with DV that you need to compress the quality so much.

I record from TV with an external USB TV adapter. The capture software is AVer Media Center.
The encoding settings on this software are kind of limited (4 settings) MPEG-2, DVD, IPOD, H.264.
I used H.264 which encodes at 320x240 @ 5000kbps.
The captured file was quite big about 300mb+ I think.
I put that 300mb file through Dr. DivX and got a 78mb DivX avi. Thats 2.6mb per minute for a 30 min show which is not bad really considering I sacrificed a lot of quality. Full screen the clip is kinda fuzzy

I upload all my video files to Veoh now because there is no file size limit.
