New York City-based investment firm Allen & Co. began holding its eponymous conference in Sun Valley in 1983.

The event is shrouded in secrecy, with tight security and even tighter lips on those with insider details on the event. Invitations are beyond exclusive, and members of the press and public have restricted access at the resort.

According to Variety magazine, this year’s invitees include 21st Century Fox Chairman Rupert Murdoch, Netflix Chief Creative Officer Ted Sarandos, Oprah Winfrey, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, PayPal Co-Founder Peter Thiel and technology innovator Elon Musk.

Political figures who received invitations include Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Council on Foreign Relations President Richard Haass.

Cook, Buffet and Gates are also on the list again this year as well, Variety reported.

The Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference is an annual media finance conference hosted and wholly independently funded by private investment firm Allen & Company. The conference has taken place in Sun Valley, Idaho for one week each July since 1983. The conference typically features business leaders, political figures, and major figures in the philanthropic and cultural spheres. Previous conference guests have included Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren and Susan Buffett, Tony Blair, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Allen alumnus and former Philippine Senator Mar Roxas, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch, eBay CEO Meg Whitman, BET founder Robert Johnson, Time Warner Chairman Richard Parsons, NBA player LeBron James, Governor Chris Christie, entertainer Dan Chan, Katharine Graham of The Washington Post, Diane Sawyer, InterActiveCorp Chairman Barry Diller, Linkedin co-founder Reid Hoffman, Sandro Salsano from Salsano Group, and Washington Post CEO Donald E. Graham, and Oprah.

Allen & Company is a private investment firm formed in 1922, located in New York City and London. Allen & Company has advised, helped found and/or invested in numerous companies including BET, InterActiveCorp, Oxygen Media, Discovery Communications, News Corporation, the Coca-Cola Corporation and Google.

Allen & Company LLC is an American privately held boutique investment bank based at 711 Fifth Avenue, New York City.[1] The firm is known for its deliberate avoidance of publicity and specializes in the technology, media and entertainment sectors.[2]
...
Founded in 1922 by Charles Robert Allen, Jr., he was soon joined by his brothers, Herbert A. Allen, Sr. and Harold Allen. The firm is generally regarded as a boutique advisory firm with a specific specialization in the media and entertainment sectors.[3]

Allen & Company, which is currently run by Herbert Allen, Jr., nephew of the founder, generally shies away from publicity and does not maintain a website or issue press releases, with the exception of the extensive media procured for its annual conference evidenced by its allowance of access to the conference by financial media properties such CNBC, WSJ and others to cover its event.

In 1973, Allen & Company bought a stake in Columbia Pictures. When the business was sold in 1982 to Coca-Cola, it netted a significant profit.[citation needed] Since then, Herbert Allen, Jr. has had a place on Coca-Cola's board of directors.

Allen & Co. was one of ten underwriters for the Google initial public offering in 2004, and were announced to have been retained in January 2011 to assist the ownership of the New York Mets in obtaining a strategic partner[4] (although such a transaction was not ultimately consummated). Allen & Co. was one of seven underwriters on the initial public offering of Twitter Inc. in November 2013.[5]

Photos: Tim Cook and other tech and media giants gather at Sun Valley — summer camp for billionaires
The deals they’re making in a remote town will unfold over the coming year

Every year, for a few days after the Fourth of July, some of the world’s biggest media and tech executives descend upon the small resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho, for an annual retreat.

It’s also known as summer camp for billionaires.

The invite-only event, hosted by investment banking firm Allen & Co., has only gotten more excessive. In addition to heads of state, tech CEOs and entrepreneurs have become regulars, including Apple’s Tim Cook, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, all of whom mingle nightly with media stalwarts like Les Moonves, Rupert Murdoch and Barry Diller. (The latter group is far more interesting for quotes, by the way.)

It’s also where big corporate deals are secured. Bezos worked out details of his Washington Post acquisition with then Post chairman Don Graham at the resort. Comcast’s acquisition of NBCUniversal required months of intense negotiations that included key meetings at Sun Valley. Verizon’s purchase of AOL began at a lunch meeting on the grounds.

But despite the high wattage guests, it's not a great place for reporters. News rarely breaks out of Sun Valley itself. All the above deals, for example, didn't surface till months later. Still, it's interesting to see who's talking to whom and trace back how deals may have gotten started.

Notes from behind the Tensabarriers of Sun Valley
By A Reporter

Editors' note: This article was prepared for Capital by a reporter for another publication.

The billionaires, entrepreneurs, chief executives and heads of state began arriving last Tuesday afternoon in the sharp summer heat of Sun Valley, Idaho—the resort town where investment bank Allen & Co. has held its annual conference since 1983.
...
The annual meeting is likely the highest concentration of C.E.O.s, government leaders and billionaire philanthropists in one place at one time at any point in the calendar year. These really are the one percent.
...
CBS chief executive Les Moonves, one of the highest paid media executives, presumed nothing when he arrived. He pulled up in a rented Chrysler 300, parked under the porte-cochère at the Sun Valley Resort, stepped out and waved to the cameras in his red-plaid button-down shirt and blue jeans.

"Hey guys," he said, flashing his teeth. "I'm not talking."

The first day saw arrivals like former Yahoo and Warner Bros. head Terry Semel, Amazon C.E.O. Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, Time Warner Inc. C.E.O. Jeffrey Bewkes, Viacom head Philippe Dauman, Coca-Cola head Muhtar Kent, DirecTV C.E.O. Mike White, Barry Diller, News Corp. C.E.O. Rupert Murdoch (along with his sons Lachlan and James), Mayor Michael Bloomberg, DreamWorks C.E.O. Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Square C.E.O. Jack Dorsey. The King of Jordan arrived the next day. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti showed up Thursday.

Bewkes, head of Time Warner Inc, retrieved his overnight bag from the back of a chauffeured S.U.V., faced the cameras and recorders and took a moment to chat. As the head of HBO, Time magazine and Warner Bros. film studios, he was well aware of the meta-theatricality behind the scene: media reporters covering media executives.

It will be at the Sun Valley Lodge on Friday afternoon that the three will likely come face-to-face for the first time since Zuckerberg began to display signs hinting at the fact that he was eyeing a run for the president in 2020 - against Trump.

Jared and Ivanka have not addressed these rumors, which Zuckberg has denied much like all politicians do in the beginning, but they did spend Thursday morning with a vocal critic of the Harvard dropout, Home Depot founder Ken Langone.

Sun Valley Conf. Jared Attending ‘Mothership of Global Elitism’
by Tony Lee14 Jul 2017

When it comes to elitism, the Sun Valley conference that Jared Kushner is attending this week is worse than Davos, according to MSNBC anchor and Wall Street expert Stephanie Ruhle.

Breitbart News has led the charge in reporting on those in the bipartisan “Party of Davos” who put globalist interests—and the opinions of the media and financial elites—above what is often best for Americans.

On Thursday, Ruhle said that for all of the “criticisms you hear about things like the World Economic Forum [in Davos]… that is exactly what Sun Valley is.”

Ruhle–who has the rare ability to talk about complex financial issues in ways average Americans can understand while also viewing financial news “through the lens of people who it’s intended for”–said these conferences are the “motherships for global elitism.” She added that Sun Valley is worse than Davos because there is not even the pretense of solving the world’s problems while attendees are hobnobbing.

“These are not the forgotten Americans,” Ruhle said. “These are the absolute chosen ones.” She said only the “most elite of the elite of the elite” attend.
