Preet Bharara Is Fired After Refusing to Step Down as U.S. Attorney
By MAGGIE HABERMAN and BENJAMIN WEISER
MARCH 11, 2017

Preet Bharara, the Manhattan federal prosecutor who was asked by President Trump to remain in his post shortly after the election, was fired on Saturday after he refused an order to submit his resignation.

Mr. Bharara’s dismissal capped a brief but highly unusual showdown in which a political appointee installed by Mr. Trump’s predecessor, President Barack Obama, declined an order to submit a resignation.

...
Mr. Bharara was among 46 holdover Obama appointees who were called by the acting deputy attorney general on Friday and told to immediately submit their resignations and plan to clear out of their offices.

"... even in his first few days as America's chief diplomat,
the president is doing what he promised; making big, big waves."

I Had Dinner With the Afghan Ambassador.
What He Said About the Differences
Between Trump, Obama Is Stunning

BENNY JOHNSON - A DAY AGO

Scott Olson/Getty Images

President Trump is already turning the world upside down in international diplomatic circles by taking a markedly different approach to global politics than his predecessor.

It comes as no surprise that with each new American administration, a diplomatic chain reaction is felt the world over. The Bush years were marked by a heavy-handed, and sometimes ham-handed, forceful approach to American diplomacy. From NATO, to pan-Asia relationships, to the Middle East, Bush dealt from a position of cultural strength and a philosophy firmly rooted in Pax Americana. Was this approach successful? Historians certainly disagree.

What can be agreed upon is the screeching, grinding halt President Obama put on this brand of diplomatic dealings. From Obama's maiden voyage abroad, what some tritely coined an “American Apology Tour,” the president accepted and advocated a diminished American presence on the international stage. His administration dealt with a light, often inconsequential, hand in diplomatic relationships, preferring, in their own words, a “lead from behind” approach.

Quote
Now these regions, and their enormous problems, are inherited by Donald Trump, a president famous for saying he will “bomb the sh*t out of ISIS.” The Trump-era diplomacy is in its infancy and will certainly be years in the making before any responsible assessment of its merits can be written.

~~~~
... current Afghan Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Hamdullah Mohib .... was asked about the current American administration and how the people of Afghanistan viewed President Trump. His answer stunned those listening, not only for its candor but also for its rare insight into how the president approaches foreign policy. His full response to the question:
"I've personally met with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago and the president has had two phone conversations with President Ghani [The president of Afghanistan]. One call was after he won the election and one after [Trump] became president. Before the calls, we were advised to keep conversations short because, we were told, Trump will not be interested in the details of the call and does not have a long attention span, so it would be pointless to have a long call.
However, we were pleasantly surprised at how much time President Trump spent asking very informed questions. The first time the presidents spoke, the questions Trump asked impressed us. “How can you win in this fight [against terrorism]?” he asked. “What do you need to become financially independent?” and “How can American business invest in Afghanistan? How can we develop businesses and mining in your country?”
Trump would listen intently after each question, often asking follow-ups. Trump's second call with our president was even longer than the first. Asking these types of questions for our country is something the Obama administration never did. The Obama administration was the most academic administration we have ever had to deal with but the Trump administration has been the most thoughtful and intelligent.
Trump continually asked “How can you win? What does Afghanistan need to win?” in reference to our fight with terrorism. Trump wants to win. Sincerely. All the Obama administration wanted to do was not lose.
The Obama administration was hesitant with us. The enemy could sense that. When the Obama administration announced its plans to pull troops out of the region, they announced the exact date they would do it. All our enemies had to do was wait [Obama] out. They knew the date they had to hang on until — which gave them the will to fight. They used that time to recruit and build up resources.
To bring real reform, we must be able to defeat enemies outside our country and inside. We must overthrow the Afghan warlords who are profiteering off the war. Every time we tried to remove one of them from power, [Secretary John] Kerry would say "no" because it would potentially make it unstable and require more troops be brought in. The entire Obama administration was too cautious, but Kerry was the most cautious. Perhaps the Obama administration was fatigued by the time we assumed power. [President Ghani assumed power in September of 2014.] But Trump is very different from Obama in this way.
This is good, for the future of Afghanistan."
This is quite long, but a brand new piece on the
the state of the art of Afghan misery:
“Afghanistan – As Only Love Could Hurt”
Notes From A Broken Land
Andre Vltchek - Global Research, March 10, 2017
EXCERPT:
Drug dealers living in holes
You were told to come to this neighborhood, to witness a warzone inside the city, to see ‘what the West has done to the country’. There are no bullets flying here, and no loud explosions. In fact, you hear almost nothing. You actually don’t see any war near the Softa Bridge; you only see Death, her horrid gangrenous face, her scythe cutting all that is still standing around her, cutting and cutting, working in extremely slow motion.
Again, as so many times before, you are scared. You were scared like this several times before: in Haiti, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste, Iraq, and Peru, to name just a few countries. In those places, as well as here in Kabul, you are not frightened because you could easily lose your life any moment, or because your safety might be in danger. What dismays you, what you really cannot stomach, are the images of despair, those of ‘no way out’, of absolute hopelessness. Lack of hope is killing you, it horrifies you; everything else can always be dealt with.
People you see all around can hardly stand on their feet. Many cannot stand at all. Most of them are stoned, laying around in rags, sitting in embryonic positions, or moving aimlessly back and forth, staring emptily into the distance. Some are urinating publicly. Syringes are everywhere.
There are holes, deep and wide, filled with motionless human bodies.
First you drive around, photographing through the cracked glass, then you roll down the window, and at the end, you get out and begin working, totally exposed. You have no idea what may happen in the next few seconds. Someone begins shouting at you, others are throwing stones, but they are too weak and the stones just hit your shoulder and legs, softly, without causing any harm.
As One Revelator says, based on his in-depth reading...."Looking through the reviews and synopsis of that book, I don't see why it makes Bannon dangerous."... I have to say that I would have expected you to take it a bit more seriously, since you're someone with a large library. Therefore you are a reader, and probably read more than the brief summary, and (worse) other people's opinions about books you've selected for your library.
Do some research on it - you have to dig below quick reviews and synopses - because they offer someone else's opinion, instead of reading it to formulate your own. We know that this book is key to understanding Bannon's worldview; he has stated as much. So since Bannon is a very key figure in Trump's development of his own strategy, it would be worth understanding beyond a cursory glance at the Amazon listing.
(Same goes for you dear One Revelator!)
FWIW, I did delve into the text a bit but then stopped. It was repetitious and inconsistent. Since the book was written in the 90's, there was no knowledge of the 9/11 event, which was key to making a date prediction. (I have found date-setting to be a failure most of the time). The idea here is similar to the Tytler Cycle, which I tend to favor. However, the dates predicting catastrophe varied wildly from now-ish to within the next 30 years. The restoration period that follows was likewise shifted. What the author didn't foresee was 9/11, which would put us in a restoration period now.
Interesting speculation. And I have no desire to pursue this particular writing any further.
I've found that, in practice, nobody can predict what will happen tomorrow. I've see shrill warnings followed by non-events. I've also seen things change overnight that nobody saw coming.
The number one cause of all human poverty, misery, and death is not global warming. It’s GLOBAL LYING.
Trump Signs Executive Order To Reorganize
Federal Government And Reduce Waste
KAITLAN COLLINS - 03/13/2017
Donald Trump signed the “Comprehensive Plan For Reorganizing
The Executive Branch” from the Oval Office Monday, an executive
order meant to reduce waste by reorganizing the federal government.
As the president was surrounded by his Cabinet members — with the exception of the four who have not been confirmed — he said this was a “major step towards making the federal government efficient, effective and accountable.”
Quote
" ... we will develop a detailed plan to make the federal government work better, reorganizing, consolidating and eliminating where necessary. In other words, making the federal government more efficient and very, very cost productive. So we’re going to do something, I think, very, very special.”
... defund UN!
NYT, citing sources:
Trump preparing orders to drastically reduce
US involvement in United Nations
Christine Wang
The Donald Trump administration is drawing up executive orders to curtail U.S. funding to international agencies — including those connected to the United Nations — The New York Times reported.
The newspaper said one order would apply to agencies that support causes which the Trump administration has vocally denounced. The drafts suggest the orders would apply to organizations that, for example, fund abortion or those that are "controlled or substantially influenced by any state that sponsors terrorism," the Times reported.
Before taking office, Trump was critical of the U.N. after its security council called for a halt to Israeli settlement-building.
A different draft order obtained by the Times said that the Trump administration would call for a review of all treaties with multiple countries — with the goal of determining which ones the United States should exit.
White House Seeks to Cut Billions
in Funding for United Nations
U.S. retreat from U.N. could mark a “breakdown of the
international humanitarian system as we know it.”
COLUM LYNCH - MARCH 13, 2017
State Department staffers have been instructed to seek cuts in excess of 50 percent in U.S. funding for U.N. programs, signaling an unprecedented retreat by President Donald Trump’s administration from international operations that keep the peace, provide vaccines for children, monitor rogue nuclear weapons programs, and promote peace talks from Syria to Yemen, according to three sources.
The push for such draconian measures comes as the White House is scheduled on Thursday to release its 2018 budget proposal, which is expected to include cuts of up to 37 percent for spending on the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign assistance programs, including the U.N., in next year’s budget.
The United States spends about
$10 billion a year on the United Nations.
Quote
On March 9 in New York, U.S. diplomats in a closed-door meeting warned key U.N. members, including wealthy donors from Europe, Japan, and South Korea, to “expect a big financial constraint” on U.S. spending at the United Nations, said one European diplomat.
Trump Wants To Slash EPA’s Budget
To The Lowest Level In 40 Years
MICHAEL BASTASCH - 03/15/2017
President Donald Trump will recommend cutting the EPA budget 31 percent.
Trump will release his “skinny budget” Thursday morning, broadly laying out the White House’s budget request. Trump will push for a $2.6 billion cut to EPA’s budget, congressional staffers familiar with the request told NYT.
Previous reporting indicated Trump wanted to cut EPA’s budget 25 percent, or $2 billion, and reduce its staff by 20 percent, or 3,000 employees. But in the last couple of days, sources told reporters the cuts would likely be deeper.
Trump is expected to cut dozens of EPA global warming programs, funding to environmental groups and state grants. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said he would push to protect grants to states for environmental cleanup and water infrastructure.
Quote
If Congress approves of the cuts, EPA will see its budget cut from $8.2 billion to $5.7 billion, the lowest funding levels in 40 years — adjusted for inflation. EPA’s 15,000-strong workforce could be cut to 12,000 employees.
Trump Budget Proposes Killing All Funding for
PBS, NPR and National Endowment for the Arts
The fight is on as new president puts Big Bird in his crosshairs
Thom Geier | March 16, 2017
President Donald Trump made good on a long-time conservative goal in his first proposed budget Thursday morning, targeting the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities for complete elimination.
Trump’s budget would zero out the $445 million budget for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a substantial source of funding for programming and broadcast operations on public TV stations and NPR radio stations nationwide, per the Washington Post.
The budget would also eliminate the budgets for both national endowments, which stood at $148 million each in 2016, as well as $230 million for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which supports libraries and museums. Additional cuts would affect two tourist mainstays in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art.
Combined, the four arts organizations account for less than 0.02 percent of the U.S. government’s $4.6 trillion budget.
... bye, bye United States Institute of Peace:
The 19 Independent Agencies Trump Wants to Eliminate
The president’s budget suggests entirely defunding
these bodies, from the Appalachian Regional Commission
to the National Endowment for the Arts.
ELAINE GODFREY
On Thursday, the White House released President Trump’s proposal for the federal budget, a blueprint outlining his spending priorities for Congress and the country. It cuts the budgets of many domestic programs. But for 19 independent agencies, it goes a step further—and proposes eliminating their funding entirely.
The wish-list is dubbed “America First,” and Trump’s proposed route to making America great again will involve a substantial increase in defense spending, offset with deep cuts to agencies like the State Department and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Here’s the complete list of the independent agencies Trump wants to defund:
  * African Development Foundation
  * Appalachian Regional Commission
  * Chemical Safety Board
  * Corporation for National and Community Service
  * Corporation for Public Broadcasting
  * Delta Regional Authority
  * Denali Commission
  * Institute of Museum and Library Services
  * Inter-American Foundation
  * U.S. Trade and Development Agency
  * Legal Services Corporation
  * National Endowment for the Arts
  * National Endowment for the Humanities
  * Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation
  * Northern Border Regional Commission
  * Overseas Private Investment Corporation
  * United States Institute of Peace
  * United States Interagency Council on Homelessness
  * Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
Sec. 2.  Proposed Plan to Improve the Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Accountability of Federal Agencies, Including, as Appropriate, to Eliminate or Reorganize Unnecessary or Redundant Federal Agencies.  (a)  Within 180 days of the date of this order, the head of each agency shall submit to the Director a proposed plan to reorganize the agency, if appropriate, in order to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of that agency.
(b)  The Director shall publish a notice in the Federal Register inviting the public to suggest improvements in the organization and functioning of the executive branch and shall consider the suggestions when formulating the proposed plan described in subsection (c) of this section.
(c)  Within 180 days after the closing date for the submission of suggestions pursuant to subsection (b) of this section, the Director shall submit to the President a proposed plan to reorganize the executive branch in order to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of agencies.  The proposed plan shall include, as appropriate, recommendations to eliminate unnecessary agencies, components of agencies, and agency programs, and to merge functions.  The proposed plan shall include recommendations for any legislation or administrative measures necessary to achieve the proposed reorganization.
(d)  In developing the proposed plan described in subsection (c) of this section, the Director shall consider, in addition to any other relevant factors:
(i)    whether some or all of the functions of an agency, a component, or a program are appropriate for the Federal Government or would be better left to State or local governments or to the private sector through free enterprise;
(ii)   whether some or all of the functions of an agency, a component, or a program are redundant, including with those of another agency, component, or program;
(iii)  whether certain administrative capabilities necessary for operating an agency, a component, or a program are redundant with those of another agency, component, or program;
(iv)   whether the costs of continuing to operate an agency, a component, or a program are justified by the public benefits it provides; and
(v)    the costs of shutting down or merging agencies, components, or programs, including the costs of addressing the equities of affected agency staff.
(e) In developing the proposed plan described in subsection (c) of this section, the Director shall consult with the head of each agency and, consistent with applicable law, with persons or entities outside the Federal Government with relevant expertise in organizational structure and management.
Sec. 3.  General Provisions.  (a)  Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:
(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or
(ii) the functions of the Director relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.
From ‘Piss Christ’ To Zombie Shakespeare:
Five Reasons GOP Wants To Stop Funding Arts
THOMAS PHIPPEN - 01/22/2017
Government funding of the arts has been a controversial political issue for both conservatives and progressives since the 1980s.
Reports last week that President Donald Trump’s team wants to cut $10.5 trillion over 10 years gives the movement to abolish government art spending new hope.
... The NEA, created in 1965, makes up a tiny part of the annual budget, with $148 million in funding last year. Still, the inauguration of Trump has given the GOP new hope that the government can get out of the art business.
Here are five art projects funded by the NEA:
Piss Christ – $5,000
The most famous and widely criticized federally-funded artwork is Andres Serrano’s 1987 photograph “Immersion (Piss Christ).” The artist took a picture of a crucifix submerged in a jar of what he says is his own urine.
Puppetry conference in Mexico – $25,000
Puppet relations between the U.S. and Mexico got a big boost in 2003 in the form of taxpayer grants.
Funding the undead – $80,000
... the agency gave $10,000 to a Los Angeles, Calif. theater for a 2017 performance of Macbeth “staged with a zombie theme” and “contextualized by pop-cultural elements and references to the popular AMC television series ‘The Walking Dead.'”
Typing cow puppets – $30,000
Ignoring whether children in 2015 know what a typewriter is, the NEA gave $30,000 to a Georgia theater to create “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type ...
Play about real people transitioning from male to female – $50,000
The American Repertory Theatre got $50,000 to help bring “Trans Scripts,” a play about real people in the U.S., U.K. and Australia who transitioned from male to female, to the U.S. in 2017.
 YOU'RE FIRED!
14 Obama Holdovers Still at the Pentagon
KRISTINA WONG - 16 Mar 2017
WASHINGTON – There are 14 Obama holdovers still at the
Pentagon, two months into the Trump administration.
Currently, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is the only presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed appointee at the Pentagon, out of 53 such positions.
Obama holdovers are filling four of those positions: Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work remains in his position; Robert Speer is serving as Acting Army Secretary; Sean Stackley is serving as Acting Navy Secretary; and Lisa Disbrow as Acting Air Force Secretary.
The Pentagon said there are 10 other Obama holdovers still serving, but has declined to name who they are or what positions they are filling.
Trump has filled an additional 32 slots for non-Senate confirmed positions, for a total of 33 hires, including Mattis. That number is less than a fourth of the 163 political appointees at the Pentagon on election day.
Trump has also named picks for Pentagon general
counsel and Air Force Secretary, but the Senate
has not yet confirmed them.
AMERICA FIRST
Beginning a New Chapter of American Greatness
A MESSAGE TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: The American people elected me to fight for their priorities in Washington, D.C. and deliver on my promise to protect our Nation.
I fully intend to keep that promise.
One of the most important ways the Federal Government sets priorities is through the Budget of the United States. Accordingly, I submit to the Congress this Budget Blueprint to reprioritize Federal spending so that it advances the safety and security of the American people.
Our aim is to meet the simple, but crucial demand of our citizens—a Government that puts the needs of its own people first.
When we do that, we will set free the dreams of every American, and we will begin a new chapter of American greatness. A budget that puts America first must make the safety of our people its number one priority— because without safety, there can be no prosperity.
That is why I have instructed my Budget Director, Mick Mulvaney, to craft a budget that emphasizes national security and public safety. That work is reflected in this Budget Blueprint.
To keep Americans safe, we have made tough choices that have been put off for too long. But we have also made necessary investments that are long overdue. My Budget Blueprint for 2018:
• provides for one of the largest increases in defense spending without increasing the debt;
• significantly increases the budget for immigration enforcement at the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security;
• includes additional resources for a wall on the southern border with Mexico, immigration judges, expanded detention capacity, U.S. Attorneys, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Border Patrol;
• increases funding to address violent crime and reduces opioid abuse; and
• puts America first by keeping more of America’s hard-earned tax dollars here at home. The core of my first Budget Blueprint is the rebuilding of our Nation’s military without adding to our Federal deficit.
There is a $54 billion increase in defense spending in 2018 that is offset by targeted reductions elsewhere. This defense funding is vital to rebuilding and preparing our Armed Forces for the future.
We must ensure that our courageous servicemen and women have the tools they need to deter war, and when called upon to fight, do only one thing: Win. In these dangerous times, this public safety and national security Budget Blueprint is a message to the world—a message of American strength, security, and resolve.
This Budget Blueprint follows through on my promise to focus on keeping Americans safe, keeping terrorists out of our country, and putting violent offenders behind bars.
The defense and public safety spending increases in this Budget Blueprint are offset and paid for by finding greater savings and efficiencies across the Federal Government. Our Budget Blueprint insists on $54 billion in reductions to non-Defense programs.
We are going to do more with less, and make the Government lean and accountable to the people. This includes deep cuts to foreign aid. It is time to prioritize the security and well-being of Americans, and to ask the rest of the world to step up and pay its fair share.
Many other Government agencies and departments will also experience cuts. These cuts are sensible and rational. Every agency and department will be driven to achieve greater efficiency and to eliminate wasteful spending in carrying out their honorable service to the American people.
I look forward to engaging the Congress and enacting this America First Budget.
Virgil:
Donald Trump, Rosie the Riveter, and the
Revival of American Economic Nationalism
17 Mar 2017
Sometimes big ideas get small coverage.  Unfortunately, that was the case with President Trump’s March 15 trip to Michigan, in which he raised an important idea—arguably the most important economic-policy idea in U.S. history—and yet his words received almost no attention.
Perhaps that was inevitable, because, as we all know, White House reporters these days have been focused on the healthcare bill, and the new proposed budget, and various allegations about hacking and tapping.
Yet here’s a Virgilian prediction: Long after the sound and fury about those other controversies have passed away, Trump’s big point on the economy will be remembered. Indeed, it’s likely that the pro-growth, pro-jobs, pro-profits alliance that Trump espouses will become permanently embedded in Republican thinking—and, quite possibly, Democratic thinking as well.
So what, exactly, did Trump say in his brief speech at Willow Run, the former factory site in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan?  What was the larger message to the leaders of the Big Three automakers—Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors—as well as the head of the United Auto Workers, the governor, and other luminaries?
The B-24 assembly line, Willow Run Plant, 1943. (Source: The Henry Ford/Flickr)
Quote
And no state better epitomized that “Can Do” ethos than Michigan.  The Wolverine State was the manufacturing hub of the country, which meant that it was the manufacturing hub of the world.  And it was that manufacturing strength, of course, that enabled us to defeat the Axis powers in less than four years.  Trump recalled those years of American strength, and even included a wistful note about the manufacturing mojo that’s been lost in recent decades:
Great Americans of all backgrounds built the Arsenal of Democracy — including the legendary Rosie the Riveter, who worked here at Willow Run . . . .  Seventy-five years ago, during the Second World War, thousands of American workers filled this very building to build the great new airplane: the B-24 Liberator.  At peak production–listen to this, it’s not the country that we’ve been watching over the last 20 years—they were building one B-24 every single hour.
..... Yet whether the Democrats are on board or not, Republicans should think hard about the vision Trump is putting forth, even if it is at odds with the doctrinaire globo-libertarianism that has so long predominated.
For America, the stakes are high.  Ultimately, both our prosperity and security as a country depend on our willingness to come together around the idea of revived domestic production.
Gary Cohn: "The Fed Is Doing A Good Job";
Trump "Respects The Powers Of The Fed"
"The Federal Reserve is an independent agency and they operate as such. They have their economic data, which they look at and they are trying to always modulate economic growth with inflation, with the work force," Cohn said. "I think the Federal Reserve has been doing a good job in doing that. The Fed will do what they need to do. And we respect the powers of the Fed."
TRUMP WANTS TO BUILD 30-FOOT-HIGH WALL AT MEXICAN BORDER
ALICIA A. CALDWELL - ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Trump administration wants to build a 30-foot-high border wall that looks good from the north side and is difficult to climb or cut through, according to a pair of contract notices posted to a government website further detailing President Donald Trump's promise to build a "big, beautiful wall" at the Mexican border.
The notices were made public late Friday by Customs and Border Protection, the Homeland Security Department agency that will oversee the project and eventually patrol and maintain the wall. The proposals are due to the government by March 29.
Quote
One of the CBP contract requests calls for a solid concrete wall, while the other asks for proposals for a see-through structure. Both require the wall to sunk at least six feet into the ground and include 25- and 50-foot automated gates for pedestrians and vehicles. The proposed wall must also be built in a such a way that it would take at least an hour to cut through it with a "sledgehammer, car jack, pick axe, chisel, battery operated impact tools, battery operated cutting tools, Oxy/acetylene torch or other similar hand-held tools."
... The government will award a contract based on 30-foot-wide
sample walls that are to be built in San Diego.
WASHINGTON—Senate Judicial Committee members will decide this week whether to propel Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court, in what would be a lasting and major victory for President Donald Trump.
At 11:00 AM on Monday, Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) will gavel the Senate Judiciary Committee to order for the Gorsuch confirmation hearings. The entire day is expected to consist of opening statements by the committee members.
Gorsuch will be the sole witness before the committee on Tuesday and Wednesday, giving millions of Americans an opportunity to hear from the nominee in his own words.
Outside witnesses will then testify before the committee on Thursday, with both friendly and hostile witnesses.
"The polished and genial Colorado native appears on a clear path to confirmation."
Tentative plans currently call for a committee
vote on the nomination on April 3.
Limbaugh on Comey Hearing: Message to Trump Is Stop the ‘Drain-the-Swamp Stuff’ or Face Impeachment
by Jeff Poor
20 Mar 2017
...
Partial transcript as follows (courtesy of RushLimbaugh.com):
    These hearings today, what happened last week and the week before that, what happened during the transition period… What all of this is can be explained simply by saying, “Look at how terrified they are in the Washington-New York establishment, of Donald Trump and draining the swamp.” The Never Trumpers on both sides of the aisle. There are conservative Never Trumpers today celebrating over the fact that Comey made it official that there’s an investigation of Trump and colluding with the Russians.
    These people know that there isn’t any evidence of this, but that doesn’t matter. What everybody in Washington supports is the smearing, the slander, and the libel of Donald Trump. And these hearings today? The FBI director, James Comey, is trying to save the jobs of a lot of people. He’s trying to save the careers of a whole lot of people — his included — in, I think, an inappropriate way. And the Republicans in this committee? Look folks, I’ve been waiting. I’ve been patiently waiting. I’ve been trying to hold it, keep the powder dry. But the Republicans on this committee…
Report:
Trump Walking Out On UN’s Human Rights Council
DAVID KRAYDEN - 03/20/2017
President Donald Trump’s administration is walking out of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) — whose membership includes many states notorious for routinely violating human rights.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, citing senior administration officials, the new administration isn’t prepared to play along with the council’s chronic efforts to undermine Israel and will be bolting on Monday.
UNHRC is expected to pass five more anti-Israel resolutions on Monday, an action that apparently precipitated the Trump administration’s determination to boycott today’s meeting, say the sources attributed by the Free Beacon.
Anti-Israel motions are common at the UN and a representative from Jordan just resigned after his efforts to promote an anti-Israeli platform were blocked by the United States and others.
Quote
The resolve of the new administration to strike a chord of loyalty to Israel, is in direct opposition to the signals sent by the previous Obama administration in its dying weeks as it actively worked towards the promulgation and acceptance of an anti-Israel resolution, actions that both shocked and outraged Israel — and then Trump, who indicated on social media that it wouldn’t happen again after his inauguration.
I have been listening to this hearing yesterday and the Democrats have been disgusting in their questioning. Today is the 3RD day of this hearing (ridiculous) and hopefully the last. It's amazing Gorsuch has put up with the crap he is getting from the Dems. They have no chance of stopping his nomination; all they can do is act like jackasses and stall it into a 3rd day (they have done). Very shameful how they are treating this very smart and capable man!
Cspan today - 3rd day of hearing: (Just started at 9:44AM EST)
Gorsuch's mentor Justice White's hearing lasted only 90 mins. So why are the Dems dragging this on out 3 days? They have no power, so all they can do is delay, delay and act like children. Shameful!
Don't believe me. Look it up yourself!
