Bill Richardson considers clemency for Marine

Attorneys for an Iraq veteran today filed a request for reconsideration of his sentence for voluntary manslaughter.

Elton John Richard received two years in jail and four on probation from District Court Judge Albert “Pat” Murdoch last month for killing a man who authorities say was trying to steal one of Richard’s vehicles.

Richard pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in January. He had had initially been charged with murder for fatally shooting the would-be burglar after chasing him several blocks on December 30, 2004.

The sentence has since been called harsh by Governor Bill Richardson, who has indicated that he would entertain a request for executive clemency.

Murdoch said late last month that he will not reconsider Richard’s sentence.
