More on the MC1R Gene, Red Hair, and Pain Tolerance

Redheads are popular study subjects. Once again, scientists have found that redheads, carriers of a particular variant of the melanocortin-1 receptor gene (MC1R), appear more sensitive to pain and temperature than darker haired folk
.
In a study that I would have to be paid good money to volunteer for, scientists attached heating elements (maybe something like curling irons?!) to the arms of 60 redheaded volunteers and 60 with dark hair to test their tolerance to temperature. Redheads started reporting pain from cold temperatures at 6°C higher than dark-haired subjects. Professor Daniel Sessler, director of the Outcomes Research Institute and department of anaesthesiology at Louisville University, believes that variations in the MC1R gene may over-activate temperature-detecting genes, thus making carriers more sensitive to thermal pain.

Other special characteristics of redheads (some anecdotal):
Anaesthesia often fail or unusually high doses of local anaesthetics are required to achieve adequate analgesia in redheads.

Redheads are more resistant to the effects of lidocaine, a common local anaesthetic.

Redheads are more sensitive to ultraviolet light, which is why they burn more easily in the sun, and it predisposes them to skin cancer.

Redheads have a fiery temper, which may have helped give them the aggression they needed to survive in the harsh northern climates.

Viking Redheads came from Ireland/Scotland ....

The Viking-Irish Redhead Gene Myth
...

Dr. Rees found more redheads in Scotland than in Ireland, but then, his study was conducted in Scotland, not in Ireland. And these days, most women either color or henna their hair red while the natural redheads go blonde or dark. Go figure. When it came to all those redheads confessing to their natural hair color (only their hairdressers knew for sure), I guess he had to take their word on it.

So far, I've found no evidence that Dr. Rees, or any geneticist, equates Irish red hair with the introduction of roving Viking or Finnish genes. If anything, it was probably a stray bit of Irish (or Scottish) DNA in the Viking gene pool that introduced redheadedness to Scandinavia as the Dublin Norse-Gael Vikings routinely took Irish wives, and some of them (and their offspring) went back home to Scandinavia.

But most Norse-Gael Vikings followed the migrating wild Irish swans and geese west—to West Scandinavia, that is—Iceland and the Faroe Islands. So if the Irish origin of the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is true, then those westernmost European isles should harbor hotbeds of redheads.

(You might want to also read up on the golden gene, as fair skin and light hair is a linked sequence of genes in those of European descent, but not for those of Asian descent who might have light-colored eyes, yet retain darker skin coloration. Also check out the Stanford links on the MC1R  gene that determines red hair. Skin color is also linked to MC1R –freckled folks are often red hair gene carriers. And there's even a link to test for red hair: RedTracer DNA.)

Redheads Festival In Holland - But Why Do Redheads Get A Bad Deal?
Redhead Abuse
By Nell Rose

In Breda Holland, the annual festival of Redheads has taken place. Over 1, 400 people have attended from 52 countries. There were art exhibitions and fashion shows. All with the theme Red. But what is it about Redheads that make people become a gingerist

http://www.demotix.com/news/2414395/5000-redheads-54-different-countries-meet-breda-holland#media-2414353

Every year 5000 redheads from 54 Different Countries meet in Breda Holland to celebrate all that is red. The two day festival is organised each year by a team of volunteers started by artist Bart Rouwenhorst.

Redhead Abuse In Adult Life.

The worse offences are aimed at adult male Redheads. This can turn into a physical confrontation ending in hospital admittance. Women are constantly abused by taunts and this can lead to women changing their hair colour out of shame or fear. Many women change the name of their hair colour to Titian or Honey Blond. Anything in fact to take away the status of being Red headed.

Redheads Turned Away At Sperm Bank.

We are turning away Redheads because of a lack of demand for this particular hair colour.

Redheads Unite

I personally find the whole thing bemusing, insulting and downright stupid. Redheads are our genetic past. Two thousand years ago the Celtic Tribes of England Scotland Wales and Ireland all had fair hair and skin before the invasion of the French, Anglo Saxon and Viking.

Red hair is our heritage. Instead of being ashamed to be a Redhead, we should be proud to be pure blooded British. Its a fact that the most powerful rulers of this Island throughout history have been Redheads. Boudica our most famous Celtic Queen, Queen Elizabeth the First, And Henry the Eighth. Along with many Scottish, Irish, and Welsh Kings and leaders too. They protected our Islands and made them great.

Redheaded donors are being turned away at sperm bank

That is if one goes by the view of the world's largest sperm bank, Cryos International, in Denmark.

It has announced that it is turning away red-haired donors because there is a lack of demand for their "product".

Its director, Ole Schou, has said no to all Scandinavian types, not just the redheads "because we simply have too much in our stock."

"We are overloaded with donor sperm from these groups so we have had to stop requesting them," he said.

Apparently Ireland is still one of the places requesting red-haired donors along with Denmark and Germany.

Redheads feel a different kind of pain

March 3, 2012 - 07:18

Redheads are more sensitive to some kinds of pain and less sensitive to others. The explanation for these differences could be found in their genetic makeup.
...

Surprisingly tough

In other respects, however, redheads turn out to be tougher than other people.

Research has produced evidence that redheads are less sensitive to stinging pain in the skin.

This was shown in tests where capsaicin, the active substance in chilli, was injected into the skin to produce pain.

"Our tests showed that redheads are less sensitive to this particular type of pain. They react less to pressure close to the injected area, or to a pinprick. They seem to be a bit better protected, and that is a really interesting finding,"
says Professor Lars Arendt-Nielsen of the Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction at Aalborg University.

...

"It seems that MCR1 is involved in central functions in the brain, and we know that subgroups like MC2R, MC3R and MC4R, which are also linked to redheads, have considerable involvement in brain functions. This could be the key to explaining why redheads are a little different to other people," says Arendt-Nielsen.

The peoples most associated with the red hair were the Celtic and the Cymric people who have now been identified with the La Tène villages in Central and Northern Europe. It is understandable that the researchers and scholars of the La Tène peoples do not have consensus of opinion of who these people were. They arrived in central Gaul in the 5th century BCE, expanded in the 4th century to Hispania (Spain) the Balkans and over into Asia Minor, but not necessarily in that order.

Beautiful Red-headed “Tora Bora Girl” from the Pashtun Bani-Israelites in Afghanistan

The major region where the populous Lost Ten Tribes were sent into exile included the region of Khurasan, which includes Northern Iran, Eastern Afghanistan and Western Pakistan. The Pashtun Tribes of Bani-Israel are the remnant of these tribes who still live in this region.

The Lost Ten Tribes of the House of Israel were called the “Great Wanderers”. They then are identified in the routes of the ancient wanderings of this Rb1 Haplogroup as they migrated along with a more ancient subclade called the R1b L23. They settled as they migrated into Southern Russia and Ukraine along the northern banks of the Black Sea and according to the historical texts they rarely amalgamated with the local indigenous populations but stayed rather intact and pure to their lost Hebrew tribal identity.

They also left their imprint upon the landscape of the world as they traversed across the globe. This is first suspected to be the route of the first of the wanderings with the Tribe of Dan, who everywhere this tribe migrated they left the name of “Dan” on the names of the rivers in which they passed over; the Don (Dan) River, the Dnieper (Danieper) the Dniester (Daniester) and the Danube as they then floated north upwards towards Denmark (Danmark).

Why Do People Hate Redheads?
By Joy Lynskey
Unnatural Hate for Natural Redheads

If this is the first time you have ever considered that there are people who hate redheads just because they are redheads, than it is already quite apparent that you are not a redhead. Being a redhead is a unique experience. I can't lie, it is pretty cool to be a part of a global population of whom only four percent of people share my hair color. I've certainly gotten a lot of attention over the years because of it. However, some of that attention may surprise you. Read more on how part of the world looks at redheads, and how the other part tries not to.

...

Red Head Facts and FAQ's

•The Gene for red hair is called melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), it is found on the 16th chromosome
•Only 2% of people in the United States have red hair
•In 2002 a scientific study accurately concluded that redheads are more difficult to sedate than any other people often requiring up to 20% more anesthesia than others to prevent them from waking up during surgical procedures

•Natural redheads do not go grey. The hair turns a shady color first, and then goes white. They often keep their red color later in life than those of other hair colors.

•The name of the country Russia means "Land of Reds" it was named thus in honor of a redheaded Viking named Rurik.

•At the end of the 16th century it was a well-known fact that the fat of a redheaded male was a required ingredient for poison.

•Archaeological digs in a desert called Takla Makan in China uncovered mummified redheads that dated back over 3,000 years. This may support the theory that the ancient Chinese may have trekked to areas of the world with the highest concentration of redheads, Ireland and Scotland, to steal red haired women that they believed had supernatural powers. Often when they were shown to not have said powers, they were immediately slaughtered.

•In 2001 an Irish judge charged a man with disorderly conduct stating openly that "I am a firm believer that hair coloring has an effect on temper and your coloring suggests you have a temper."
•Having a redheaded child in Denmark is considered an honor
•When passing a redhead in the streets of Corsica, you are supposed to spit and turn around
•If you had red hair during the Spanish Inquisition, you were accused of having stolen the fires of hell, then quickly burned as a witch
•Aristotle proudly shared his belief that redheads were emotionally unhousebroken
•Natural red hair holds on to its pigment better, making it difficult to dye
•Redheads bruise a bit easier than people of other hair colors
•Although red hair is actually thicker than hair of other colors, redheads commonly have fewer strands of hair on their heads. Blondes have an average of 140k hairs, while redheads have closer to 90k
•According to legend and stories of Atlantis the very first redhead was a prince named Idon of Mu, who once he discovered Atlantis, was tattooed with the island's gorgeous red sunset in the form of red hair and freckles so that future Atlanteans would always be reminded of the very first sunset
•In ancient Rome and even the Ottoman/Byzantine Empires, redheaded slaves were much more expensive than those of other hair colors
•A full 24 points ahead of blondes, Redheads surveyed would use the word 'bold' to describe themselves
•Gingerphobia is a fear of redheads
•In France, there is hardly a fate worse than to be a redhead
•In the United States redheads are called redheads, often even strangers will address them as "Red" and often they will respond to it naturally, (force of habit) in England, redheads are called Gingers
•Bees are thought to sting redheads more than those of other hair colors

It looks like I'll be changing my retirement destination to Denmark, and I'll be staying away from France or Corsica as well. These are somewhat fun facts, but not all facts about redheads seem so fun.

Didn't AJ get a Hernia op ?

Why Surgeons Dread Redheads

By Meredith Melnick @meredithcmDec. 10, 20105 Comments
...

Operating room docs, for example, have long reported that redheads appear to need more anesthetic than others. The new study suggests that that observation is an accurate one — mostly. Those with the MC1R mutation are more sensitive to opiate pain killers — which means they’d actually need less — but less sensitive to other types, most notably lidocaine injections. One study which used heat-related pain as its litmus of overall sensitivity showed that redheads indeed felt things more acutely and unpleasantly, probably because the MC1R mutation releases a hormone that stimulates a brain receptor associated with pain regulation. (More on Time.com: Study: Researchers Identify Hundreds of Gene Variants That Contribute to Height)

Redheads are also said — anecdotally at least — to be more susceptible to hernias. The study did not establish that conclusively, but it did  find a tangential link between chromosome 16 and a condition called brittle cornea syndrome, the sufferers of which have a slightly elevated hernia risk.

Less substantiated by the study was the belief that people with red hair are more susceptible to hemorrhages. A survey of tonsillectomy patients found that about 7% of both red-haired and control patients experienced post-surgical bleeding. And in a study of the blood coagulation of 50 women, half of whom were redheads, there was no difference in clotting.

Overall, the researchers concluded that even if redheads require a little extra handling on the operating table, trepidation among surgeons had more to do with stereotypes than with clinical evidence. ”It would seem that the reputation of people with red hair for having increased perioperative risk is without any basis in fact and should only be used as an excuse of last resort by surgeons defending problematic bleeding or recurrent hernias,” concluded authors, Andrew L Cunningham and Christopher P Jones. Take that, blonds and brunettes!

we'll never know if Judas Iscariot, the Apostle who famously betrayed Jesus Christ in the Bible for 30 pieces of silver, was actually a redhead. But he is often portrayed in medieval paintings as having flaming hair and an equally crimson beard. The phrase "Judas color" was used to refer to red hair, and no less a personage than William Shakespeare made reference to it, in As You Like It. ("His very hair is of the dissembling colour, something browner than Judas'.") In a grand irony, the depiction of Judas as having red hair — believed to be partially a function of needing to make the traitor stand out from the other Apostles in paintings — has contributed to several centuries' worth of discrimination and negative attitudes toward redheads.

The Viking Origins Of The Red Hair Gene

For some time there has been quite a debate among scholars regarding the origins of the red hair gene. According to some, the gene for red hair is inherent to the Celts, while others claim it to be a genetic trait specific to the Norsemen, being brought to the British Isles during the Viking Age. There is also a third category of historians and scientists who agree on a common Celto-Germanic genetic trait, rather than a separate origin for the gene.

What are the causes behind red hair?

Scientifically speaking, red hair is the result of a recessive genetic trait which has been caused by a series of mutations in the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R), a gene which is located on chromosome 16. Being a recessive genetic trait means that both parents must cary the gene in order for their children to be born red haired.

Where is red hair most common?

The highest rate of frequency for red hair can be traced to Ireland (ranging from minimum 10% to maximum 30%), Scotland (ranging from minimum 10% to maximum 25%), Wales (ranging from minimum 10% to maximum 15%). As such, one might conclude that the Celts are actually responsible for the red hair gene.

Nonetheless, right next to Wales is southwest Norway, where red hair is quite common. According to Professor Donna Heddle, the director for both the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Centre for Nordic Studies and a leading expert on the Norse, the red hair gene from Scotland is actually part of the Norsemen’s heritage.

Did the Vikings actually bring the red hair gene to the British Isles?

Professor Donna Heddle also explained that the perception according to which the invading Viking raiders of the British Isles were blond is nothing more but a mere misconception. According to the same theory, the Norsemen were likely red headed. This may be true, at least in part. Not that many Viking warriors were naturally blond, indeed. In fact, blond hair was very much sought after in Viking Age Scandinavia and many Norsemen dyed their hair blond.
...

Frequency and distribution of the red hair gene in Europe. Image source: www.eupedia.com

Furthermore, it has been recently discovered that southwest Norway may well be the actual place of origin for the red hair as the gene was successfully linked to the paternal Y-DNA haplogroup R1b-L21, which includes one of its subclades defined as R1b-M222 — one that is very common for both northwestern Ireland and Scotland.

A lot (probably most) of supposed Italians are really Greek(Dacian/Trojan/Thracian)(Etruscan)  or later Goths  or the later Norman(Norsemen)

The majority of Etruscan portrait sculpture depicts people with reddish and therefore Germanic hair colouring.

410 A.D. - Alaric, king of the Visigoths, an Arian Christian - conquers Rome.

Alaric I, King of the Visigoths, accepts the surrender of Rome, 410. Liebig card, from a series on the migrations of the Barbarians, published in late 19th or early 20th century.

Of course "Barbarian" comes from "Barbarossa"  "rosa"=red  Barb=hair (ie Barber = hair cutter)

Just saw your info mate and it does show that I am not a Liar: my clan is a wee bit off the charts of those who care to notice:

I'll be honest; if a moron comes on my land...WELL they leave in a body bag....End of The Show!

..OYE: I have Brown Hair and Olive skin...But I the heart of a barbarian... ;)

Another interesting fact is that vikings  bleached their hair blonde and so many were in fact red heads

...
Personal Grooming in the Viking Age

Although the popular image of the people of the Viking Age is one of wild-haired, dirty savages, this is a false perception. In reality, the Vikings took care with their personal grooming, bathing, and hairstyling.

Perhaps the most telling comment comes from the pen of English cleric John of Wallingford, prior of St. Fridswides, who complained bitterly that the Viking Age men of the Danelaw combed their hair, took a bath on Saturday, and changed their woolen garments frequently, and that they performed these un-Christian and heathen acts in an attempt to seduce high-born English women1:

It is reported in the chronicle attributed to John of Wallingford that the Danes, thanks to their habit of combing their hair every day, of bathing every Saturday and regularly changing their clothes, were able to undermine the virtue of married women and even seduce the daughters of nobles to be their mistresses2.
...

The Arabic observer Ibn Fadlan noted that men of the Rus bleached their beards to a saffron yellow. Some scholars therefore believe that it is likely that they bleached their hair as well. This bleaching was accomplished using a soft, strongly basic soap, where the excess lye in the mixture provided the bleaching action18. Pliny the Elder noted this practice among the Germanic tribes, and states that men were more likely to bleach their hair than women:

Soap is the invention of the Gauls and this is used to redden the hair. It is made from fat and ashes -- the best is beech wood ash and goat fat, the two combined, thick and clear. Many among the Germans use it, the men more than the women.
(Pliny the Elder Historia Naturalis)19

...
Far  from  being  filthy  brutes,  we  find  that Vikings  were  actually  very  well  groomed  and perhaps  even  fashion  conscious.
...
According  to  medieval  accounts  as  well  as archeological  analysis,  it  is  thought  that  the strong  lye  soap  used  by  Vikings  for  washing
was also used for bleaching hair
. And it was not just  the  ladies  going  for  that  Marilyn  Monroe aesthetic – it is recorded that many Viking men
bleached their hair and beards blonde
.
...
John  of  Wallingford,  an  English  chronicler, lamented   that   the   Danish   men’s   habits   of washing  and  changing  their  clothes  regularly
was too strong a temptation for English women. Apparently  many  a  marriage  was  ruined  and more  than  one  nobleman’s  daughter  lost  her
virtue to a well groomed Dane.

Kit Daniels | Infowars.com -  June 20, 2017

A 27-year-old Trump supporter was stabbed by a gang of Armenians who noticed his pro-Trump bumper stickers on his car after they rammed his vehicle.

Antonio “Tony” Foreman was leaving a bar with friends in Santa Monica, Calif., after spending all day at a free speech rally when the Armenians rammed through a parking lot barrier and smashed Foreman’s car, according to multiple sources.

The men got out to exchange insurance information when they noticed Foreman’s patriotic bumper stickers including a Gadsden Flag and an American flag.

Foreman was stabbed nine times and was taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

Goal of Bounty

On Saturday, June 17, 2017, Baked Alaska's bodyguard, Oathkeeper, and proud pro-Trump patriot Antonio "Tony" Foreman was almost stabbed to death by two Armenians, who called him a "cracker". The last thing Tony heard before he blacked out was "You're getting the shank, white boy".

Tony was stabbed a total of 9 times.

Tony had just left a bar in Santa Monica, where he was celebrating a day of successful pro-Trump activism in Los Angeles with Kyle "Based Stick Man" Chapman.

The police detective in charge of the case believes that the attack was "racially motivated".
