Re: Songs I'd like to hear Alex use in his show someday - don't care if it's opening the show, I kinda like the Imperial March for that. But just strictly based on lyrics, it's hard to beat Bruce Cockburn's Call It Democracy

Call it Democracy
by Bruce Cockburn, written Nov. 1985

Padded with power here they come
international loan sharks backed by the guns
of market hungry military profiteers
whose word is a swamp and whose brow is smeared
with the blood of the poor

Who rob life of its quality
who render rage a necessity
by turning countries into labour camps
modern slavers in drag as champions of freedom

Sinister cynical instrument
who makes the gun into a sacrament --
the only response to the deification
of tyranny by so-called "developed" nations'
idolatry of ideology

North south east west
kill the best and buy the rest
it's just spend a buck to make a buck
you don't really give a flying f**k
about the people in misery

IMF dirty MF
takes away everything it can get
always making certain that there's one thing left
keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

See the paid-off local bottom feeders
passing themselves off as leaders
kiss the ladies shake hands with the fellows
open for business like a cheap bordello

And they call it democracy
and they call it democracy
and they call it democracy
and they call it democracy

See the loaded eyes of the children too
trying to make the best of it the way kids do
one day you're going to rise from your habitual feast
to find yourself staring down the throat of the beast
they call the revolution

IMF dirty MF
takes away everything it can get
always making certain that there's one thing left
keep them on the hook with insupportable debt

Artist: Steve Miller
Song: I want to make the world turn around
Album: Living In The 20th Century

I don't want to live in a world of darkness
I want to live in a world of light
I don't want to live in a world that's heartless
I want to live in a world of sight
Well you know, I want to make the world turn around

Living in a world of justice
Living in a world of shame
Living in a world of freedom
Living in a world of pain
Well you know, I want to make the world turn around

Turn the darkness into light
Turn the hunger into life
Turn the wrong into right
Put an end to the strife
Turn the blindness into sight
Save a human life
Make the world turn around

I want to live in a world of gladness
I want to know what your heart is made of
Don't want to live in a world of sadness
I want to live in a world of love
Well you know, I want to make the world turn around

Living in a world of justice
Living in a world of light
Living in a world of freedom
Living in a world of sight

I want to send a message
To every boy and girl
I want to send a message
About the world
We got to build it up
Stop tearing it down
We got to build it up
Make the world turn around

I reheard this song recently and it is right along the lines of what Alex is looking for in his musical messages.  Off the Survival album, I think, Bob Marley, "Ambush in the Night."  They shape our minds, protected by majesty.  It is nothing but an ambush in the night.  led by society.  through an ambush in the night.  they are trying to conquer me.  ooo-weee ooo-weee.  we are not ignorant and they just can't touch us    just listen to the song, it strikes the right cord- JC

Being a musician and an old timer at that here's one of my faves:

World Party - Ship of Fools    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdeIZkZo2PM
Lyrics:
We're setting sail to the place on the map
from which no one has ever returned
drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
and by the light of the crosses that burn
drawn by the promise of the women and the lace
and the gold and the cotton and pearls
it's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
you sail away from the light of the world on this trip baby

avarice and greed
are going to drive you over the endless sea
they will leave you drifting in the shallows
or drowning in the oceans of history
travelling the world, you're in search of no good
but I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like you knew you would
using all the good people for your galley slaves
as your little boat struggles through the warning waves
but you don't pay.

you will pay tomorrow
you gonna pay tomorrow you will pay tomorrow
save me save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools.
oh save me save me from tomorrow
I don't want to sail with this ship of fools
I want to run and hide right now
Where's it coming from? oh where's it going to?
it's just a.... it's just a ship of fools

Steppenwolf's "Monster"

very relevant to today

---------------------------
Words and music by John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, Nick St. Nicholas and Larry Byrom

Quote
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light

The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog

And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

How about a song by a professed muslim, Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens Peace Train. He was branded a possible terrorist and denied entry to the US some time back. Anyone who knows this guy's music knows there's no way he's of a violent nature.

Sponge - "plowed"

Just wanted to add:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHjdmNLs0go

lyrics:

Will I wake up
Is it a dream I made up
No I guess it's reality
What will change us
Or will we mess up
Our only chance to connect
With a dream
Say a prayer for me
I'm buried by the sound
In a world of human
Wreckage
I'm lost and I'm found
And I can't touch the
Ground
I'm plowed into the sound
To see wide open
With a head that's broken
Hang a life on a tragedy
Plow me under the ground
That covers the message
That is the seed

If you watch the entire video you'll see Serj gets it. He was from the band System of a down.

Your empty walls...
Your empty walls...
Pretentious attention
Dismissive aprehension
Don't waste your time, on coffins today
When we decline, from the confines of our mind
Don't waste your time, on coffins today

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

I want you
To be
Left behind those empty walls
Told you
To see
From behind those empty walls

Those empty walls
When we decline, from the confines of our mind
Don't waste your time, on coffins today

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

I want you
To be
Left behind those empty walls
Told you
To see
From behind those empty walls
Want you to be
Left behind those empty walls
I told you
To see
From behind those empty walls

From behind those empty walls
From behind those empty walls
The walls
From behind those empty walls

I loved you, yes
Though they be
For you killed my family

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

Don't you see their bodies burning?
Desolate and full of yearning
Dying of anticipation
Choking from intoxication

I want you
To be
Left behind those empty walls
Told you
To see
From behind those empty walls
Want you to be, left behind those empty walls
Told you
To see
From behind those empty walls
From behind those empty walls
From behind those empty walls
From behind those empty walls
Those walls...
Those walls...

I'm a big music guy and I could list a million songs here, but just one will suit the show best.

Iced Earth - Declaration Day  Cool

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAWrlwzfFzk

(actually, that video sucks and makes no sense I don't even think it's official, you're best off minimizing it and just letting the song play out or it will distract you, trust me)

here's lyrics if some of you aren't used to that singing style:

A desperate situation
Forced to retaliation
The task ahead, a burden
Men will suffer, that's for certain
We'll charge into the fire
The cause, we must inspire
We raise our fist to tyranny
A high price, Freedom is not free

The odds are stacked against us
But with our resolve relentless
And arrogance their Weakness
Our cause is just, we won't be beaten
Upon this declaration
Will come a brand new nation
Where men are seen as equal
Governed by and for the people

Chorus
So we make our stand and pray
On this declaration day
For independence I will fight
With liberty I will defy

So we make our stand and pray
On this declaration day
Give me liberty or give me death
I'll fight 'till my last breath

With virtue as our beacon
Our cause is charged as treason
Battle worn and starving
Through the hell of war we'll keep marching
The birth of our new nation
An act of desperation
We'll force king George down to his knees
Capitulation

Repeat Chorus
