Apple is a little more than three-quarters of the way through a $200 billion capital-return program that it believes will set a corporate record for stock buybacks.

There is another $47 billion promised to shareholders.

Something broke in the gears of financial engineering!
21 March 2016
, by Wolf Richter (Wolf Street)
http://wolfstreet.com/2016/03/21/share-buybacks-financial-engineering-turn-toxic/

This table shows the top 10 buyback queens in order of the amount spent on a TTM basis, and the mostly dismal performance of their shares over the same period.

These share buybacks will turn to dust in this on going stock market crash and destroy a lot of capital thus create a lot of deflation.

How Much Of S&P Earnings Growth Comes From Buybacks
6 April 2016
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-04-06/how-much-sp-earnings-growth-comes-buybacks

Excerpt:

About 25% of S&P 500 EPS growth comes from buybacks on average since 2012.

The S&P 500 companies on aggregate pay out 2/3 of their earnings through dividends & buybacks.

Buyback yield estimates should reflect the continuous issuance of stock to employees at option exercise prices that are well below the market price at which shares are repurchased.

This is why we estimate buyback yield as: (net dollars spent on buybacks less option expense) / market cap.

This is because although companies report net dollars spent on buybacks, they spend more per share repurchased than what they receive per share issued.

The results of our analysis confirm our beliefs regarding share repurchases.

Approximately two-thirds of the S&P 100 destroyed intrinsic value, by an average amount of 12.03%, as a result of their share-repurchase programs.

"We Should Be Concerned" - Stock Buybacks Plunge Most Since 2009
16 May 2016
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-05-16/we-should-be-concerned-stock-buybacks-plunge-most-2009

- Corporations will purchase $450 billion of US equities in 2016 and will remain the largest source of US equity demand.

- U.S. companies from Apple to IBM just put on the brakes. Repurchases dropped 38% to $244 billion in the last four months, the biggest decline since 2009.

- Planned buybacks among American firms tumbled from a year ago by $147 billion, an amount equal to 2.5 times the profit S&P 500 companies lost in the 12 months through March.

- As profits fell for a fourth straight quarter, the number of firms slashing dividends rose to a seven-year high.

- Repurchases could fall below $600 billion for the first time in three years. Buybacks hit a record $762 billion in 2007.

- U.S. firms have been the biggest buyer of stocks every year since 2009, with their net purchases exceeding $2 trillion

- Hedge funds and wealthy individuals were net seller of stocks for 15 straight weeks through May 6, a record streak. The only buyer was corporations scooping up their own shares.

- Central banks - beyond merely the BOJ and SNB who already do that on a day to day basis - will have no choice but to directly step in and monetize not just bonds (and perhaps commodities) but also stocks.

Some Bad And Some Worse News For Stock Buybacks
27 June 2016
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-06-27/some-bad-and-some-worse-news-stock-buybacks

The bad news is that we are entering yet another quiet period for buybacks. This means that for the next 45 days, the biggest - and supposedly only - buyer of stocks will be mostly out of the market, and bank buyback desks will not be able to provide much needed support during distressed (read: more sellers than buyers) times.

The worse news is that even without the buyback blackout period, following months of surging stock repurchasing activity by corporate treasurers buybacks have now ground to a virtual halt.

U.S. companies spent record amount on buybacks over past 12 months
22 June 2016
, by Anora Mahmudovat (MarketWatch)
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-companies-spent-record-amount-on-buybacks-over-past-12-months-2016-06-22

Q1 buybacks at $161.4 billion are second-largest in history.

In the 12-month period ending March 2016, S&P 500 companies spent a record $589.4 billion on share repurchases according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, beating the previous year-over-year record of $589.1 billion set in 2007.

$589.1 billion~$590 billion and with some stock buybacks from non-S&P 500 companies ~$600 billion, that's over half a trillion! That's Crazy!

The "Mystery" Of Who Is Pushing Stocks To All Time Highs Has Been Solved

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-12/mystery-who-pushing-stocks-all-time-highs-has-been-solved

What the update reveals is "a surge in net global central bank asset purchases to their highest since 2013."

And just like that the mystery of who has been buying stocks as everyone else has been selling has been revealed.

Honestly didn't know this was a mystery also knowing that the banks were given money to buyback their own shares so would see this more as a conformation.

Goldman reiterated over the weekend, 2016 is about to be another record for buybacks, which are now expected to hit an all time high of $600 billion, the same amount as QE2, and up 7% from the prior year.

All said, Goldman now expects over $2.5 trillion in buybacks to take place by the end of 2016.
