We have won Clark, Skamania, and Clallam county, we have also have encouraging results from King County with the 43rd district (where I am a delegate for my precinct) being a big win for Ron Paul. Likely similar wins in the 37th and 46th districts. More to come.

Estimated delegates is just a beauty contest, it does not determine delegates.

We have way more pledged delegates and many of the delegates pledged to other campaign our actually our people who didn't display their support in order to get put as delegates.

First of all the Republican caucus counts ONLY half of the total delegates.

The Caucus is February 9th, the Primary is 10 days later on February 19th.

Sort of.

The state's hybrid (or not) system illustrates the complexities of the national process for picking delegates, which varies from state to state and political party to political party. Although other states mix a primary and caucuses, Washington's approach carries its own special stamp.

On Feb. 9, both Democrats and Republicans will gather in precinct-level caucuses for the initial round of delegate selection, with the media poised to report which national candidates carried the day.

But as in other caucus states (of which Washington is the most populous), those first get-togethers will be followed by additional rounds of caucuses or conventions, with each round electing a smaller number of delegates to the next round until the final selection for the national convention (congressional district caucuses for the Democrats on May 17; a state convention for the GOP May 30-31). And delegates are not unalterably bound at each stage to back they presidential candidate they initially supported.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 19, the state will conduct a presidential preference primary for both Democrats and Republicans.

The Republicans will pay some attention to the primary results, drawing on them to allot 19 of their 40 national convention delegates. Nine of the delegates will be awarded based on which presidential candidate tops the field in each of the state's congressional districts, with the other 10 allocated in proportion to the statewide vote.

The Democrats will ignore the primary completely, as for as delegate selection goes.

That means any voter could decide to: (a) participate in one party's caucus; (b) cast a ballot in one party's primary; (c) participate in one party's caucus and vote in the same party's primary; (d) participate in one party's caucus and vote in the other party's primary; (e) none of the above.

Republicans are worried about Democratic-leaning crossover voters who will fill out a GOP ballot in the primary, which is just for show on the Democratic side, in order to make mischief with the Republican results.

"But our party thought it was critical that everyone have the chance to participate in picking our next president," state GOP Chairman Luke Esser said in a June statement, after Democrats rejected his request to honor the primary results in picking half the national delegation.

"A primary is the test of the ability to raise money for television advertising," Democratic Party state Chairman Dwight Pelz said. "Caucuses are a test of your ability to organize a grass-roots campaign."

So the Republicans will slot 18 of their national delegates based on the primary vote, rounding out the delegation with three automatic "superdelegates," picked because they hold high public or party office.

The Democrats will look to their caucuses in selecting 78 of their 97 national delegates, filling out the card with 17 superdelegates and two unpledged delegates recommended by Pelz.





So, because I have been having health problems that prevented me from attending the caucus I plan to vote in the primary.

Yes, it's a confusing process

Washington Democrats will determine all their delegates for presidential nominee candidates at today's caucuses, with no delegates to be awarded through the Feb. 19 presidential primary.

Washington Republicans will use caucuses to determine 49 percent of its national delegates; the rest will be awarded in the primary.

Not surprisingly, some critics call the primary a "largely meaningless beauty contest." It costs taxpayers $10 million.

Important — people who vote in the Feb. 19 presidential primary also can participate in (and vote in) their party caucuses today.

They must, however, stick to the same party.

Ron Richards, a caucus coordinator for the Clallam County Democrats, said he had heard misinformed people alleging that citizens must choose between voting in the primary or attending a caucus.

"The last person who called said she got it from a neighbor who read it someplace," Richards said.

Voters participating in the presidential primary must sign an oath indicating that the voter has not participated in the other party's caucus process.

Each party will receive a list of voters who chose to affiliate with that party in the primary.

Kris Grier, Clallam Democratic caucus coordinator, urged people who plan to attend a caucus to share rides to the precinct sites.

Grier said the Democratic caucuses in 2004 drew about 1,200 people.

He expects 2,000 participants today.

RICHMOND, VA. -- All day, Mike Huckabee's campaign has been trying to learn about how the final 13 percent of the votes in the Washington state Republican caucuses would be counted. As of this afternoon, only 87 percent of the votes have been counted and CBS News has deemed the state too close to call.

Finally, Luke Esser, the chair of the state GOP party, returned the Huckabee campaign's call, saying the final results would be determined sometime within the week.

The only hitch? The state chairman had already declared John McCain the winner last night, with only a 242 vote lead. In a written statement last night, Esser said, “Congratulations to Sen. McCain for a hard-fought win, his second caucus victory in the 2008 presidential nomination process. And congratulations to Gov. Huckabee for his strong second-place finish.”

Huckabee campaign lawyer Lauren Huckabee (daughter-in-law of the candidate), who is skeptical of the fairness, asked for a lawyer to monitor the resluts.

The state GOP denied the request and hung up on Lauren Huckabee, according to the campaign. Campaign adviser Ed Rollins will be sending lawyers to Olympia, scheduled to land this evening, to investigate the matter.

At a hastily arranged press conference in a hotel room, Rollins was steamed.

“You don’t get to announce the votes until they are all counted. And obviously, by his attempts to project without any statistical data or even if he had statistical data, it’s irrelevant: we’re entitled to a fair, full count," Rollins said.

"Our lawyers attempted to contact him today, finally did so about ten minutes ago. He said, ‘Well I don’t know where the precincts, are, I just sort of did it. How dare Mike Huckabee challenge – he has to trust us. We’re going to count the rest of the votes today in the office.’"

"We asked to have someone go in to the office with them and count the votes and he refused us. He said he would have to notify the other campaigns."

“I’m not accusing the McCain campaign of anything. I’m accusing the state party chairman of using very, very bad judgement. We are going to fully pursue this legally."

"When our lawyer asked them, again, 'will you say statistically, will you project, what were the precincts?', he said, 'well I don’t know, I can’t count that.' So, basically, he’s making a guess [about the results].”

"I think it literally took away from our momentum…Going to the primaries here, everything is about momentum, so we are very disturbed by it.”

Unfortunately some of the biggest threats to the Freedom Revolution can still come from within...our own perceptions...please read Ron's letter again until you see the part that states he we are going to the National Convention! The sentiment amongst Mccain supporters in my small town was one of strategic interest. Folks don't want Hitlery, so they are supporting Mac. The County chair at my caucus was emphatic in mentioning that folks could vote undeclared. That must account for the other vote. Also a minimal number of 10 delegates went to Romney in Kittitas county's caucus.

On another forum full of people who believe we're just crazy conspiracy nuts, many of the members think there was a conspiracy to keep Ron Paul from winning.  It's pretty f**king obvious if those people are on our side.

Nearly all of the people at my caucus location in Whatcom County were either for Dr. Paul or Mike Huckabee.  In my precinct there were two votes for Romney, my vote for Paul and the others were for Huckabee.  In the whole county McCain placed third in delegates, with Paul in second and Huckabee in first. 

Wasn't there a clip on Washington Journal that showed a caller from Seattle talking about the number of RP supporters at his location?

Besides, only delegates matter.  RP lost the vote in Clark County, but won the delegate count there.
